Dual Layer DVD write error #80020022 - failure to communicate with disk

This only happens on Dual Layer DVDs, and always just as it's finishing. "Communcation with the disk drive failed error code: 80020022"
Used Disk Util and direct burn via finder - both give same error. The image is a .cdr created via DiskUtil, original from a factory cut dual layer DVD, about 7.2GB. The target blank is a "Double Layer DVD+R" Memorex.
The resultant disk is full, but unusable. Re-insertion sees it as a blank disk with no usable space. It wrote something, but certainly not the TOC?
MacBook Pro 2.5, about 6 months old, lastest Leopard
Please - any ideas? Do I have a hardware issue?

Wow - thanks for the quick reply, pullman! I did all of the ideas you listed, no luck. The only way to make this fail is to write to a double sided DVD, I've gone through a stack already just testing/failing. This also fails when writing to a double sided DVD through the finder (then clicking on "burn")
Here's a copy of the console error logs:
http://baxnet.com/bs/picture6.png
-- which indicate a hardware/polling error on the DVD drive itself.
Note that it is complaining about /dev/disk1, which on my system maps to the DVD drive:
Model: MATSHITADVD-R UJ-867
Revision: HA13
Serial Number: HG010865
Detachable Drive: No
Protocol: ATAPI
Unit Number: 0
Socket Type: Internal
Low Power Polling: Yes
Thanks again for your help - but still no luck. According to the logs, this may well be a device/hardware problem. Would you suggest a call to Apple support?

  • Please recommend a dual layer dvd writer drive...

    For my Dual 2.0 GHz G5.
    Looking for something reliable, fast, cheap and will write dual-layer dvds as well as all the other usual stuff.
    Thank you

    Hi Red Havoc.
    I've got the same machine and I fitted a Pioneer DVR - 115D and it runs fine. You have to play a bit with the height of the screws to get it to fit snugly. I couldn't use the black knurled screws on the original drive cos it rides too high with them and the tray gets caught on the edge of the aperture. I think I just used some long hard drive screws in the end. It' quite straightforward.
    There's a bloke on eBay who is doing them for about 25 quid at the mo.
    I think any Pioneer optical drive will fit plug and play as they supply all the Apple originals anyway.
    Good luck,

  • Dual Layer DVD Burn - Error "Mac OS Error -5001"

    I have a Powermac G5 dual 1.8 (Machine Model PowerMac7,2) - I upgraded the stock DVD burner to a Lacie Dual Layer burner model SH-S162L Internal. Burns single layer discs and CDs just fine... It will not burn dual layer discs, video_Ts, disc copy, nor data DVD DL's...
    I've tried different media, new system install, updating drivers, even contacting Lacie who has sent me a new drive, which I installed today to the same end result of very expensive plastic coasters.
    Lacie seems to be no help, and I can't find anything similar on these groups. I'm using Toast 7.0.2. Anyone have any suggestions? My sanity (and DVD budget) are running out! =)

    Hi Christopher,
    Please check to see if you have file sharing turned on. In the OS9 era, a -5001 error involved accessing or deaccessing a shared volume, I seem to recall. If file sharing is on, try just turning it off.
    Good Luck,
    John

  • Blu Ray drive/burner can't write dual layer DVD - W500 Vista 64

    I recently did a clean Vista 64 Business install on a new hard drive. I pretty much have everything up and going, except the Blu Ray drive doesn't recognize that it can write dual layer DVDs. I ran Nero InfoTool and it, too, tells me that the drive cannot write dual layer DVDs. (Pretty much everything in InfoTool is checked, read and write, except all the HD-DVDs and the dual layer DVD write functions.) Does anyone have any ideas? My understanding is that the drive can write dual layer DVDs.

    I'll answer this with the same information that I posted at TPF:
    From: http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/document.do?lndocid=MIGR-70234
    Reads or writes data with speedy maximum data transfer rates of:
    * 16x maximum (writing to CD-R media)
    * 10x maximum (writing to CD-RW media)
    * 5x maximum (writing to DVD-RAM media)
    * 8x maximum (writing to DVD+/-R media)
    * 4x maximum (writing to DVD+/-RW media)
    * 2x maximum (writing to BD-R/RE SL media)
    * 1x maximum (writing to BD-R/RE DL media)
    * 24x maximum (reading CD-ROM, CD-R media)
    * 24x maximum (reading CD-RW media)
    * 8x maximum (reading DVD-ROM/-R/+R SL media)
    * 6x maximum (reading DVD-ROM/-R/+R DL media)
    * 6x maximum (reading DVD-RW/+RW media)
    * 5x maximum (reading DVD-RAM media)
    * 2x maximum (reading BD-ROM media)
    * 2x maximum (reading BD-R/RE SL/DL media)
    It appears that DL (dual layer) writing in DVD-R and DVD+R formats is not supported.

  • Dual layer DVD burner any time soon?

    I have an old PowerBook 1.33ghz. I'm itching to replace it with a MacBookPro. I upgraded this PowerBook with a dual layer DVD burner, and I use it a lot. I moved to the US from the UK and send many DVD's back to family and friends in the UK. I can't live without the dual layer DVD writer, plus backing up requires less DVD's and hence less space on my shelves.
    Anyone here know when Apple will release a model with a dual layer DVD writer? I refuse to buy an external.
    This old G4 has better DVD support than Apples flagship portable computer, doesn't seem right does it. I keep thinking I can live without dual layer, but its just such a step back.
    Anyone know of when this may change and MacBookPro will get a dual layer burner? I dont know how long I can wait to get my hands on the new MacBookPro . . .

    As soon as the industry can make one (so thin). I'll be buying one to replace it on my MBP. Might be Blu-ray

  • Dual-layer DVD problem

    I checked my settings and my MacBook Pro can burn dual-layer DVDs. I created a video in iMovie and burned it with iDVD on a Memorex dual-layer DVD. It appeared to burn with no problems. I attempted to play it in a relatively new DVD player. It spit out the disc and said "Disc Error." I attempted to play it on my Windows-based laptop. It recognized it as a DVD but couldn't play it.
    I then tried again with a Verbatim dual-layer DVD. Again, it appeared to burn with no problems, but refused to play. I even put it back in my Mac, and the menu came up, but it wouldn't play the video. I've checked and my firmware is updated for my Mac, which is a month old. I'm not sure what else to try.

    There may be a limited number of places to put a break point depending on the amount of material.
    Anyway you need to build the disc without formating. Then format the build - it is at that point in the Dialog you will see Black/Gray. The following movie shows where (note there is no break point shown in the movie, it jut s to point out where to look) Proper break points will be black the others which cannot be set as a breakk point will be grey

  • Creating Dual Layer DVDs

    I'm trying to encode a dual layer DVD. I'm rendering the project with iDVD and creating a disk image of the DVD on my hard drive. I'm then using Disk Utility to burn the image to a DL disk. The DVD plays fine about half-way through on my DVD player and then freezes. I'm guessing the DVD player is having trouble transitioning to the second layer indicating there is a problem w/ the way it was encoded. The DVD player is functioning fine, as it does not have problems with other dual layered disks.
    Is Disk Utility capable of burning a disk image formatted for dual layers onto a DVD? I don't know if iDVD is creating a bad dual layer disk image or if Disk Utility is incapable of encoding a dual layer disk image to a DVD.
    Could someone please comment on what the best way to get a dual layer disk image transferred to a dl DVD using iDVD would be?
    Thanks in advance.

    I agree with Len. You'll have much better luck with Roxio Toast. Len is also very successful at burning from a disc image via Roxio Toast at 4x or slower. And this is really the best approach in my opinion. However I do want to point out exactly what the iDVD Help Menu states with regards to using a disc image and dual layer media. Pay special attention to the final paragraph below:
    Creating a disc image of a project
    You can create a disc image of your project so you can burn additional DVDs of your project without going through the encoding process each time.
    Saving a disc image of your project creates a file that is formatted just like a finished DVD, except it’s not actually burned on a disc. All the media is compressed into the format used on a DVD, and you can play it on your computer by double-clicking the disc image icon and opening DVD Player.
    To create a disc image:
    Choose File > Save As Disc Image.
    Type a name for the disc image.
    Choose where you want to store the disc image.
    Click Save.
    You can use Disk Utility in Mac OS X to burn the disc image to a DVD when you are ready.
    Note: If you burn your project to a double-layer disc, you should burn directly from iDVD rather than from a disc image. A disc-burning utility will not set the layer break according to DVD specifications and may cause playback issues.
    Hope this helps

  • Media write error for dual layer DVD burn

    I am having a problem burning a dmg to a dual layer DVD using the internal DVD writer. I have tried both Disk Utility and SimplyBurns.
    Both program s go through the preparation for the file, and when it attempts to burn the disk I get a 'media write error'. I am using Memorex DVD +R DL disks. I have successfully burned both CDs and regular DVDs with the drive.
    Does anyone have a suggestion on how I can fix this?
    Thanks

    I am using Memorex DVD +R DL disks.
    Try Verbatim DVD+R DL discs.

  • Cannot write dual layer DVDs

    Hi,

    THANKS!

    Hi. No, not yet. Are those supposed to work? I tried KODAK and one that is chinese and sold locally as "maxprint". The strangest thing happened now: I bought 5 of those KODAK and only one of them started the process of burning. But it reported an error after burning 55% and crashed. So, chances are the problem is really with the discs? Not the burner?
    Thanks!

  • Errors burning dual-layer DVD+R's

    OK.... this is truly odd.
    We are running DVD Studio Pro 4.0.3 as well as Toast 7.1
    Whenever we burn a dual layer DVD+R disc from either DVDSP or Toast 7.1 we get an Error -5001 (AFP Authorization continue) failure during the lead-out. The disc mounts and appears to play just fine, but we are very leery about using these as masters.
    We have been able to replicate this on every G5 in the studio regardless of burner.
    Anyone know what is causing this error?
    We are trying to get this disc to duplication ASAP but don't trust these burns.

    I have had the same oddness, some things that worked as a workaround
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=3236567&#3236567
    As to using the DVD+Rs as masters, usually not a great idea ( you mean for replication I take it?) DLTs are usually more reliable, though I have got issues once in awhile with DLTs. Well once actually and it is driving me nuts right now

  • How can I burn a 5GB iso to a dual layer DVD (I get a size error..)

    I converted a 5GB *.mkv to iso for dual layer dvd with devede. When I try to burn the iso with growisofs -dvd-compat -Z /dev/sr0 /home/hk/movie/movie.iso, I get: /movie.iso is larger than 4GiB-1.
    -allow-limited-size was not specified. There is no way do represent this file size. Aborting.
    :-( write failed: Input/output error
    What could I do? Thank you

    Chances are the ISO is not dvd compliant & does not contain layer change info:
    http://forum.doom9.org/archive/index.php/t-113514.html
    EDIT: Alternative
    For the lazy you can install ImgBurn into a Windows NT4 bottle/prefix
    then install the latest ASPI.dll
    issue a wineboot for the bottle/prefix
    then build the dvd in ImgBurn BUT you will need to use dvdauthor to create the correct dvd folder structure & files

  • Error Burning Dual layer DVDs

    I can burn single layer dvds and cds just fine however every time i try to burn Dual layer DVDs i get error message that there is a hardware failure. I have tried several DVD manufactures to no avail. I finallly had a hunch there was a corrupt file someplace so i created a new user account and burned the file from using Finder and the dual layer burned just fine with my new user account. I repaired permissions on the bad user account (USing the snow leopard dvd and using the Disk utlity) and still no luck. has anyone had or have heard of this issue? Any ideas on how to find the corrupty file causing Dual layer dvd burns to crash? Btw i have used Toast, Finder and Itunes to try and burn the dual layers. Any info on this would be great

    Yep, I have the same problem. I've re-booted, check all logs, and I get the same error. I was burning the same file, the first two DVD's went well, then I got the Communication error.
    I make a living in Graphics, so my clients have to have the files I've created... This is a MAJOR issue!

  • Sense Error Message when trying to burn Dual-Layer DVDs?

    Hey all,
    I am trying to burn a dual-layer DVD disc with the internal drive in my MacBook Pro.
    I am getting the same error message from Toast each time I try to burn a disc. I get no response from Disk Utility (it just says "waiting for the disc drive") and Finder doesn't recognize the dual-layer disc when I try to burn in Finder.
    I've heard that it may be a media issue, so I've tried with every single brand of DVDs that I can get my hands on. So far, I've tried Verbatim, Sony, and Memorex. I can't find any other brands of media, even at Best Buy?
    I've heard that it may be a security update that might have caused this issue. System Profiler says that my machine can burn both DVD+R DL and DVD-R DL.
    What is going on?!??

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
    The two most common suggestions are (a) try other media, which you've done (and Verbatim normally work) and (b) run a DVD Lens Cleaner disc through it to see if some dirt or dust on the lens it causing the problem. If this doesn't fix it then it sounds like a hardware fault and best to let Apple check it out.
