Dual Layer DVD...

I want to burn my movie onto a dual layer DVD. There is a selection in DVDSP4 for dual layer, but how do I prep it for a lower compression/dual layer option in Compressor?

Not necessarily - passes impact the encode time, the first pass is a test encode, the second one is the real thing (think of it has a rough draft). It has nothing to do with whether you're using single or dual layer media.
It shouldn't change size in DVDSP - once the file is encoded that's it - it's going to stay that size no matter what. If its coming out at 4.7 GB you may be able to get away with single layer media.

  • Keeps asking for Dual layer DVD

I made a slideshow in iMovie and shared to iDVD8. The media windows shows the file as 2.7 gig. But when I go to burn it says to insert a Dual Layer DVD because the project to large.
I dont have anything else in the project other then the menu which is 3 drop areas. Nothing to it.
I tried sharing again from imovie and selected medium this time with a files size of 1.7gig and i still get the same thing.
I do have quality set for PRO.

good question. I used the Theme that has half the screen as a grey fade. When i added music to it i changed it to 25 secs of playback. I would assume then my menu is only 25sec. It only has 1 button to start the movie.
At this point I have a DVD+R DL created that works fine my PC. After googling around I read about DL and changing the bitsetting before burning so that a TV DVD Player sees the disk as a DVD-ROM.
Would I be able to copy this DVD+R DL with Toast 8 and change that setting to make it work?
BTW, thank you for all the replies.

  • DVD RW DW-U10A won't read burned Dual Layer DVD

My friend created a dual layer dvd for me on his PC. I put it in my G5 and after about 15 seconds of the drive trying to read the dist it just gets spit out. It won't mount or anything.
Why is this happening? I've never had problems reading discs created on a PC. Is my drive incompatible with DVD DL+R media?

    Hi,
I've been having a similar issues since not long ago. I think it coincides with Apple,s last security update (although I can't swear the 2 are connected).
    I have a dual core 2GHz PowerMac G5 with a Pioneer DVD-R 110D Dual Layer.
I'm burning Dual Layers medias with Toast 7 (DATA, DVD-VIDEOS ETC). They all mount fine after and I can read the files etc. However if I insert the discs a few day slater, about 50% of them won't mount and are rejected without any error message!
    Anyone else has this problem?

  • Sense Error Message when trying to burn Dual-Layer DVDs?

    Hey all,
I am trying to burn a dual-layer DVD disc with the internal drive in my MacBook Pro.
I am getting the same error message from Toast each time I try to burn a disc. I get no response from Disk Utility (it just says "waiting for the disc drive") and Finder doesn't recognize the dual-layer disc when I try to burn in Finder.
I've heard that it may be a media issue, so I've tried with every single brand of DVDs that I can get my hands on. So far, I've tried Verbatim, Sony, and Memorex. I can't find any other brands of media, even at Best Buy?
I've heard that it may be a security update that might have caused this issue. System Profiler says that my machine can burn both DVD+R DL and DVD-R DL.
    What is going on?!??

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
The two most common suggestions are (a) try other media, which you've done (and Verbatim normally work) and (b) run a DVD Lens Cleaner disc through it to see if some dirt or dust on the lens it causing the problem. If this doesn't fix it then it sounds like a hardware fault and best to let Apple check it out.

  • IDVD refuses to burn lengthy video even though it's set to dual-layer DVD.

*"Your project exceeds the maximum content duration. To burn this project, remove some content."*
    Project:
*- total project duration: 164:10 minutes*
*- total project capacity: 5.208 GB (max. available: 4.172 GB)*
    Menus:
*- number of menus in project: 2 menus*
*- total menu duration: 1:10 minutes*
*- total menu capacity: 54.240 MB*
    Movies:
*- total movies duration: 163:00 minutes*
*- total movies capacity: 5.155 GB*
This should fit quite snug on a dual-layer DVD, which I've gone to the preferences and changed to do so. It won't even let me make a disc image.

What encoding mode / bit rate is it set at?
I strongly suggest not exceeding 120 mins. (2 hours) max unless you opt to use a 3rd party app like Roxio Toast's Fit to DVD option.

  • Two hour sequence to dual-layer DVD?

    Hi,
    I'm confused.
I have a two hour 16:9 sequence (actually 1 hour, 56 minute) that I want to put on a dual-layer DVD. I guess I didn't fully think it through when I sent it from FCP to Compressor and selected DVD 16:9 120 minute fastest encode, because it compressed it to 4.04 gigs rather than twice that size at a better quality. Now I'm looking for a setting that tells it my destination is a dual-layer DVD and I don't see it.
Additionally, the m2v file that came from that process cut off the final minute or so of my sequence. Why in the world would that happen?
    Kenny

These instructions assume you're using DSP for authoring. I don't know if iDVD has DL capability.
The 'calculator' in Compressor assumes a single layer DVD. The key is to look at the summary, which is the far left tab in the Inspector. About 1/3 from the top, it will show the estimated file size. Adjust the bit rate selector until you get the file size approaching the capacity of the Dual Layer disk. You have other restrictions to consider as well. Totally data rate of video(s)audio(s)other data cannot exceed the maximum for the DVD spec (nominally 10mb/s).
Once inside DSP, when you burn the disk, you'll be asked to select a marker to indicate where the burner will change from writing to the first layer to the second layer. This should occur at a convenient location in the video (a fade to black, eg.) near the end of the first layer capacity. If you don't already have a marker near that point, be sure to add one for the switch-over.
    Good luck

  • System stuck formatting dual-layer DVD

I'm trying to format a dual-layer DVD but my system gets stuck in the very beginning "Writing image..." part of the formatting process (I waited at least an hour). If I click cancel, I get the warning:
"Stopping now may produce an unreliable disc...operation is not complete".
When I choose to Stop formatting, I get the pinwheel, force quit does not work properly and I have to Restart computer.
    I've got DVDSP set to:
    • Dual layer
    • OTP
    • a DL breakpoint that DVDSP OK'd (in black after building the disc) in the Break Point pull down options
    • Seamless not checked
    • and Lossless Linking not checked
DVDSP says current disc volume is 6.7GB, 5.9 of which is my movie and the rest are menu assets.
I'm burning to an external DiscMakers Reflex duplicator using a MAM-A DL DVD+R disc. DVDSP has been able to successfully recognize burner.
    Any help greatly appreciated.

I experienced exactly the same problem recently twice in succession when I tried to burn to Verbatim DVD+R DL disks. After running two Verbatim disks in DVDSP 4, I gave up on DVDSP 4 for burning DVD + R DL disks and went to Toast 8 and burned and verified the disks with no problems. While some people are apparently able to burn DL disks successfully in DVDSP 4, I have not been able to. The fact that Toast 8 burned to the same VErbatim DVD+R DL disks that had failed in DVDSP 4 seems to me to point clearly to a problem with burning DL disks in DVDSP 4.

  • How can I get a dual layer DVD+R to burn properly?

I can not get a dual layer DVD+R to burn properly. The disk pops out before it's finished, usually at the end of the multiplexing stage.  iDVD seems to think the disk is still burning for about 20 more minutes although the box says "done".  I tried it with an external DVD burner with the same result.  I'm running the latest iDVD version available on a MacBook Pro running Lion.  Any ideas out there?

    Hi
Free space on Start-Up (Mac OS) Hard Disk - How much ?
    • for SD-Video and SL-DVD - I never go under 25Gb
    • for DL-DVD I would guess that 50Gb free is safe
    • if HD-material is used (needs space to be downscaled to SD-Vide0 as this is DVD standard) - 4-5 times more

  • Compressing 7.5 Hour video for Dual Layer DVD

I've got to compress 7.5 hours of footage into an MPEG2 fittable on a Dual Layer DVD. The client knows that the quality will be inferior. Anyone have any suggestions as to settings before I start? I'm guessing to set the bitrate to 2.3 or so. How about the maximum? Thanks!

I used Compressor and set everything on the MPEG 2 settings to the lowest I could, like 2.1-5.0 and compressed the **** out of it. It looks pretty decent for that much compression. It only fit because I chopped off the credits sequence from the 15 different sections, compressed that seperately, then had them link to it so that it was actually about seven hours of footage. There's a little pixelation when you go into certain motion areas, but the client's happy. I only recommend doing this if there are no other options.

  • Media write error for dual layer DVD burn

I am having a problem burning a dmg to a dual layer DVD using the internal DVD writer. I have tried both Disk Utility and SimplyBurns.
Both program s go through the preparation for the file, and when it attempts to burn the disk I get a 'media write error'. I am using Memorex DVD +R DL disks. I have successfully burned both CDs and regular DVDs with the drive.
Does anyone have a suggestion on how I can fix this?
    Thanks

I am using Memorex DVD +R DL disks.
    Try Verbatim DVD+R DL discs.

  • Project for dual layer DVD

    Hi there,
I have a project which contains several individual sequences that have been compressed separately and which constitutes several parts of my future DVD.
The total size is such that I need to burn a dual layer DVD.
How do I determine where to include the marker indicating to switch layer ?
I have done it before with a long project containing only one sequence, but this time the sequences are independent....
Would DVDSP include automatically a "change layer" marker if I burn as is ?
    Thanks in advance
    Ivan

I'd recommmend looking up "About Choosing a Dual-Layer Break Point" in the DVD Studio Pro user's manual or Help File.

  • Burnning dual layer dvd Encore CS5.5 errors out.

Here is the greatest error I have ever seen.
I got to burn a dual layer dvd transcoded from AVCHD 1080i with fallowing settings.
Edited footage in PPro and send to Encore via Dynamic link, created dvd project using Mpeg2 with 9mbps, Dolby 192 for Audio.
File size to be burned on dvd is 5.67gb, aprox 1 hour 10 min transcoded with 9mbps, 720x40 wide screen, audio is 192kbps Dolby.
There are three menus one is main and tow sceen selection menus, noting fancy everything as default. menus linked as usual nothing fancy and and it is very basic.
All assets, that used for motion menus and main video is transcoded fine, but when it gets to put dvd together I get this error
Encore starts organizing videos for disk and after that it gets to this above and thats it. Press ok Build progress box gives fail message and option to Ok it. After pressing Ok button this box goes away to build panel.
I have tried to change an Automatic layer break to manual still get the same error, I have tried a custom layer break and still get the same error again, I have tried dvd, and an image, and folder for dvd, still the same error there to. I have redone project from scratch and still got the same result.
However previously I have burned many Dual layer dvds using the same method described, and same settings described, and never had this problem.
Nothing on the PS was changed except the updates installed regularly.
Anybody have any Idea what is this all about? Because I just burned 16 Blu Ray discs, and 16 Dual layer discs on one of the project, and next one a day latter this happens.

I'm having the same problem. not once did it, the encore was automatically break in the case of dual layer dvd. now he does not. I mark the box DUAL LAYER 8.54gb, do DVD disc or image or folder, or change the marking of the layer break from automatic tomanual, and it does not. in the end he always gives the message: duallayer requerid.
wanted to know how to do this manually break, because even in the manual or here on the website of adobe, has no suchinformation. does not show clearly how to manually break. please if someone can give a help, thank you.

  • Can Adobe Premiere Elements 12 burn a dual layer dvd disk?  If not, which of the components is at fault?

When I spoke to a person about upgrading from Premiere Elements 10 to 12, I specifically asked if the program could burn DUAL LAYER 8.5 dvds and I was told that it could.  That is the ONLY reason that I upgraded.  Since recording in full HD the files are larger.  I video plays for local theaters. I have been trying to burn a disk that is 7.5GB (2 hours 15 minutes).  I bought RIDATA -RDL 4x 8.5GB disks.  Then had a dual layer burner installed in my computer.  Premiere Element dialog "incompatible disk" The RITDATA says the problem is Adobe, the Geek Squad says the problem is Adobe.
SO ANSWER THIS QUESTION: Can Adobe Premiere Elements 12 burn a dual layer dvd disk?  If not, which of the components is at fault?  I am trying to burn 18 copies of this video (no copyright infringements) and don't tell me to to divide it into 3 disks.

Can Adobe Premiere Elements 12 burn a dual layer dvd disk?
    Short answer: Yes.
What are you burning to DVD disc - DVD-VIDEO on DVD disc or AVCHD format on DVD?
Does your DVD CD burner support double layer single sided discs?
Premiere Elements is supposed to (been there and done that....)
    1. burn to Folder (8.5) for Publish+Share/Disc/DVD and Publish+Share/Disc/AVCHD
(you take the VIDEO_TS for the former and BDMV Folder in the latter to a program like ImgBurn
for the actual burn to the DVD double layer single sided disc)
    2. burn to disc 8.5 GB/240 minutes
Have you gone the burn to folder Folder (8.5 GB) route?
Have you tried another brand of disc in spite of by the disc manufacturer and the Geek Squad are telling you?
A double layer single sided disc is labelled 8.5 GB/240 minutes. In reality, that 8.5 GB is 7.95 GB. Where are you
coming up with 7.5 GB for your disc? Was that due to typing glitch?
Please review and consider. Any questions, please do not hesitate to ask.
    ATR
Add On..Have you updated 12 to the 12.1 Update yet? If not, please do so using the opened project's Help Menu/Update.
This is not Adobe. Rather user to user.

  • Does G5 1.8 GHz write to dual layer DVDs?

I have large picture library that's more than a normal DVD can hold, but will fit on a dual layer DVD. When I put the DL disk in, my Mac just spits it out. It won't even recognize it. G5, machine model PowerMac9,1, PowerPC g5 (3.0). Pioneer DVD-RW DVR-117D - all from System Profiler.
    Thanks, Josh

The Pioneer DVR-117D is in reality a DVR-108 that Apple has modified (read: crippled) the firmware on. One of the features that was removed was the ability to burn DVD+R DL discs (it will not write to DVD-R DL discs).
If you want to bring back the DL write capability, you'll need to force flash the drive with the firmware for a DVR-108. See this post here on Discussions with instructions on how to do the flash. Make sure that you use the links from my post in that thread to the flashing program and to the firmware files. The original article that's linked to in that thread references outdated files.
