Dual layer problem

I'm am trying to burn a dual layer PAL SD dvd. An error box comes up to say that the break point cannot be set, use manual selection but when I switch to manual the dialogue box does not appear. Any thoughts.

Richard,
You stated:
This is what I have also started doing and it seems to work.
That is great news. Though I have never had an issue with the Layer-break on a DVD-9 in Encore, part of that could be that I edit my Sequences as Chapters and then have a separate Timeline for each of those. I've never even done a Chapter Playlist, because of my workflow.
Also, when using ImgBurn for DVD-9's, I've never had any problems either, and have appreciated the greater control with regards to the Layer-breaks.
I hope that ImgBurn continues to work for you.
Good luck,
Hunt
PS I love the little dialog and error messages in ImgBurn. I'll often do something deliberately wrong, just to see what the message will be - I need to get a life!

  • Dual Layer problems

I've tried two burns of a .dmg file using Memorex DVD+R DL from my PC and neither will work on my eMac combo drive. The first try used TransMac to burn, the second used Nero which required a ridiculous process: split archives on PC, transfer to Mac, conversion, split archives, back to PC, join and burn.
A network would've helped, but various factors prevent a network between the two machines.
The disks will spin for a few seconds, then pop back out.
I've burned data and movies before using DVD+R and they've worked fine previously, but for a DL disk, could it be that it'll only accept DVD-R DL?

You will find when you go into system profiler (About this Mac>More Info>Disc burning) that your eMac's superdrive will only burn DVD-/+R and DVD-/+RW. Not any dual layer disks.
Here is an example of mine (although the older model, so it only supports -R and -RW)

  • Dual layer Problem... Help!

    Hi All,
    I'm using DVDSP4, creating a DL disk...
I've done this previously without issue.
Today, I received this error message:
"Formatting was not successful. A suitable marker could not be found in the required layer break range. See the DVD Studio Pro User's Manual for more information."
However, I've set the preference to automatic breakpoint.
    What do I do?
As always, I'm grateful for any help.
    THANKS!

I ran into this problem recently....and just to add to what drew said, I was able to rearrange my vts folders in the outline view(i think) and it was then able to find a break point. IF your Disk is 100% full, your going to have a lot harder time finding a break point--if this is the case the break point has to be EXACTLY 1/2 way through your disk.
IF you just can't get it to find one, re-compress your largest track at a slightly lower bit rate and it will free up a surprising bit of space.

  • IDVD dual layer problem.

    Hi can anyone help, please.
Trying to write a DL disk (Verbatim) via iDVD, (LaCie 22x DVD+/- R) keep getting error returned at the end of encoding (long time-5 hrs.) >>> The recording device reported the illegal request: Invalid field in parameter list. (0x26, 0x00) <<< ? Have tried LaCie and they pointed me to this forum.
I can add that my previous drive of same make but a 16x (in for repair at present) worked perfectly. Its works if I make a disk image first, bit worried about the layer break issue, if it is still an issue from Toast 9? Its iDVD thats is informing me of the layer break issue when I go to burn, anyone got any ideas on this, I have deleted the iDVD's prevs. 50Gbs. free disk space. I suspect the drive is not compatible with iDVD, unlike my 16x which worked, really makes the layer break an issue for me.
    Thank you for any information.

I can see that happening in Toast 6 but I don't think that is true for Toast 9. The latter handles layer breaks much more effectively. And in the latest version which I believe is Toast 10; the layer break is nearly invisible. Can't think of an app that runs flawlessly on mac where you get more bang for the buck than Roxio Toast. Is it as nicely polished as iDvd when it comes to Themes? Absolutely not. Is it much more functional while being equally user friendly? I think so.
The only app that I am aware of that allows you to set layer breaks pretty much where ever you wish is DVDSP. However DVDSP is much more money than iDvd or Roxio Toast put together. Not to mention the steep learning curve for most of apple's pro apps contained within FCS.

  • Player compatibility problem with dual layer media

I've created a dual layer DVD and there is a problem with compatibility from player to player.
It plays fine in one of my DVD players but will not load in the other.
The duplicators tested my master on 2 players and it loaded on both, but would lock up if a chapter was selected from the submenu.
It has 4 tracks of content. 3 menus, and a bunch of chapter markers. The original build had stories (replaced with standard chapter markers) but I removed them hoping it would solve the problem.
The imported video tracks were created with Compressor. MPEG-2 2 pass VBR max bit rate 7.5. AC3 audio tracks. 7.7 GB on disc.
I'm already way over my deadline and ahve no idea what to do next other than maybe recompress so the disc is not so close to being maxed out.

Thats just how compatible that media is... +R DL (double layer) & -R DL are not that compatible. Recordable media is less compatible that replicated discs but double and dual layer media can be 50% compatible at best (depending on your target market...)
Good quality media, Verbatim +R DL for example burnt at slow speeds helps improve things,

  • DVD dual layer blank media problem

    Hi,
I used HP branded media without any problems in the past. Now I got a roll of Ritek dual layer DVDs and most unfortunately the drive ejects them as if they were incompatible.
Does anybody know if Apple keeps a page with compatible media? Or is there any indication which brands would work and which don't? The dual layer media is still quite expensive and I don't know if I can convince the retailer to take back opened disks...
    Best
    Jurgen

If they're DVD-R DL discs then there's the problem. They should be DVD+R DL.

  • Problems with break point in Dual Layer project

    Hi,
I'm currently having a problem setting a break point in a Dual Layer DVD project in DVD Studio Pro 4. I have a project that has 5.9 GB of data (5 shows with between 7-8 chapters in each). The problem I'm having is that in the 5th chapter of the 4th show, there is a freeze frame hickup when I burn the disk. I've tried moving around the chapter mark, deleting them and re-adding them, re-exporting the media (it is in MPEG-2) in all combinations of those and am still having the freeze problem at that chapter mark. I've gone back to the original media and there are no problems there.
What I think the problem is is that the disk is automatically setting the break point for the dual layer disk at that chapter mark. However, when I go into the project and try to set the break point manually from the dropdown, I can't seem to select anything. The default is the begining of the 5th track, and I can only change it to automatic and back again. Anything else I select just goes back to that 5th track, but I still think it's actually doing automatic instead. I'm using a Verbatim DVD+R DL if that helps anything as well.
To all, do you agree that the problem is most likely due to the break point? And if so, how do I change the break point to the beginning of either the 3rd or 4th of the shows instead of having it seem to be stuck on automatic?
    Thanks in advance,
    Chris

Alright, to answer my own question. Here's what I think the problem was.
There are actually two Disk/Volume menus: one in the Disk settings when you're actually working in the project and another when you go to build and format. I kept trying to set the break point in the first one--in the disk settings in the project--and it wouldn't let me because it can only be set when building and formatting.
It's kind of an annoying settup that there are two identical menus that don't fully communicate with each other, but in the end the solution has been solved.

  • Dual Layer Break Point problem

    Hi,
I just found out after I updated DSP 4 to version 4.0.3 my Layer 1 on every project since updating gets corrupted!
I thought it was the Dual Layer discs I used that caused the problem, but after I re-installed DVD Studio to the original version 4.0.0 the same project worked perfect.
Anyone else have issues with Dual Layer Break Point after updating to 4.0.3?
I have tried different chapters as layerbreak points on my project, and even a test project, with the same result. The finished discs is barely playable on some DVD players, showing wierd interference and noise, and DVD Player on mac crashes when reaching the dual layer break point, and the plant i send the master have a software to check DVDs and they said that it couldnt find/was corrupt Layer 1 on one of my discs. Hope someone can fix this, DSP is the best software otherwise!
    Best regards,
    Mats.

    DVD+R Double-Layer
You can use DVD+R double-layer media, often referred to as DVD+R DL, for burning your dual-layer projects. With DVD+R double-layer media, DVD Studio Pro places the layer break point and sets the switch point to be nonseamless as specified in your project.
DVD+R double-layer discs require you to use the Opposite Track Path (OTP) direction setting when burning the disc. This means that the first layer must be larger than the second layer. See Setting the Dual-Layer Direction for more information.
While DVD+R double-layer discs allow you to burn your dual-layer projects, they tend to have more compatibility issues than the other types of DVD media.
    DVD-R Dual-Layer
If your system contains a DVD drive that can write to the new DVD-R dual-layer media, you can burn your DVD project to it with DVD Studio Pro. However, there are several issues:
Because currently DVD Studio Pro has no way to identify DVD-R dual-layer media as having two layers, burning a dual-layer project to it results in the appearance of an alert message telling you that the DVD media may have insufficient room to hold the project. This message is based on the assumption that the disc is single layer. Both layers of the disc will be written to as needed, however, when you click Continue.
If you are burning a dual-layer project, the break point you set will not affect where the layer break actually occurs. Instead, the first layer is written to until filled, at which point the drive switches to writing to the second layer.
The switch between layers is a seamless layer change not supported by some DVD players, which may stop playing the disc when the switch point is reached.
Important: Do not use DVD-R dual-layer media unless these issues do not impact your project.

  • Problem Trying To Burn A Image To A Dual Layer DVD

My Problem is that i seem to be unable to burn an (DMG) image file to a Dual Layer Disk. I am using Disk Utility to burn the DVD. Everytime I try to burn the Disk i get the error message "The unit could not calibrate the laser power level for this medium.." but my computer is capable of burning Dual Layer Disk's. I Have Done This Before. I have been searching the web for any tips on how to fix the problem and i have even gone out and brought a cd 'laser lens cleaner' which many people clame fixed there problem but no advil. There is nothing wrong with the image file and i have managed to burn the file half way after cleaning the lens with the 'laser lens cleaner' i brought before, at which point i recived the error message "devise failed to respond properly, unable to recover or retry". I have not been able to gte any further sinse and am still gettin the first error message that "The unit could not calibrate the laser power level for this medium.." I have also tryed reinstalling the OS but no luck there either. Any Idea's?

    Long shots ...
I know for a fact that the Perian QuickTime component causes major burning problems with Toast and Popcorn, remove it and they work perfectly, if you have it installed try removing it.
Failure to calibrate could be the media, what brand do you use ? try Verbatim ...
The CD lens and the DVD lens are two different things, a CD cleaner may not clean the DVD lens (so one burns fine and the other doesn't)

  • Dual layer mixed-angle problems

I'm working on a dual layer mixed-angle project. Everything simulates fine, but the problem somes when trying to build it.
I get a "video bit rate too high" error when muxing. I had lowered the max bit rate in compressor to 5.8m The audio is encoded to AC3 using compressor.
I had previously done some test discs for my client and everything was fine. So I went back to the check disc and began adding assets one at a time to try and figure out where the problem is.
Every built fine until I cross the single layer limit. The dual layer property is checked in the disk properties. I've tried setting last marker before the disc won't build to a layer break point, etc.
    Any ideas?

Hi there, are you far over the limit for single layer disc? If you're between 5 & 6 gig try building the disc as a single layer project to your hard drive then use DVDRemaster or DVD2One to shrink it back to 4.4gig. Don't know if it will work but might be worth a try. Was your original client test done in DVDSP3 or 4?
    Cheers

  • Dual layer break problem on DVD playback

    Hi,
    I'm on Encore CS5.1
I've got a dual layer DVD program I'm trying to output but playing stops and reverts to menu at what I believe is the layer break.
The program is approx 6.5GB in total size. I encoded prior to importing into Encore, at highest MPEG2-DVD quality. I slid quality slider all way over from 4 to 5, among other things to force highest quality. The source files are AVCHD destined for Standard Def DVD.
It took me a little while to suspect the break as the culprit. I did one burn where the disc continued playing thru the offending spot and I saw that and said to myself: "self, that looks like a layer break to me."  Upon examination it is just about exactly in the middle of this program.
I suppose I should consider encoding at lower bitrate and burning at slower speed. Can anyone who's had this problem tell me if this will likely fix it, before I re-encode.
I've also heard about manually setting the spot for the bereak and I chose "manual" not "automatic" but it did nothing to allow me manual control.
    All experienced insights welcomed.
    Thanks
    wsmith

Imgburn will help get the "best possible" burn by allowing you to select the slowest possible burn speed for the disc brand/model you are using (this is MY opinion... other people say burn at the fastest speed)
You might Google to see if you can find any reviews of the Ritek brand
As far as your layer break stoppage... I've only done a couple of dual layer projects, with Encore doing all the work with automatic settings, and have never had a problem... but, I use Verbatim dual layer, not Ritek

  • Dual-layer DVD problem

I checked my settings and my MacBook Pro can burn dual-layer DVDs. I created a video in iMovie and burned it with iDVD on a Memorex dual-layer DVD. It appeared to burn with no problems. I attempted to play it in a relatively new DVD player. It spit out the disc and said "Disc Error." I attempted to play it on my Windows-based laptop. It recognized it as a DVD but couldn't play it.
I then tried again with a Verbatim dual-layer DVD. Again, it appeared to burn with no problems, but refused to play. I even put it back in my Mac, and the menu came up, but it wouldn't play the video. I've checked and my firmware is updated for my Mac, which is a month old. I'm not sure what else to try.

There may be a limited number of places to put a break point depending on the amount of material.
Anyway you need to build the disc without formating. Then format the build - it is at that point in the Dialog you will see Black/Gray. The following movie shows where (note there is no break point shown in the movie, it jut s to point out where to look) Proper break points will be black the others which cannot be set as a breakk point will be grey

  • Problems burning dual layer DVD's

we have had lots of problems trying to burn dual layer dvd's. Single layer has been fine but is there some secret trick for getting dual layer to work? we have tried both the internal dvd burner and an external one and both are supposed to be dual layer capable.

about half of the ones we try get about half way through and then say media sense error (or similar wording) some of the others look like they have burned fine and then when it is writing the last little bit it just stops, this results in discs which are unreadable. The others look like they've burned fine and then don't play one of the items on the DVD once it is put in the machine.
Those that do play appear to stop about the level of the switch of layers.

  • DVD Studio Pro Dual Layer Break Point Problem

I have a problem with a disc that I am burning. It is a dual layer (the break point is not set to seamless) with 1 movie that is about 3.6 GB and 1hr 23 min long, a 30 min slideshow, another 30 min extra and five other extras that total to about 20 min. I put the dual layer break point at the beginning of the slideshow, everything played fine on the computer, but on the Panasonic DVD player it just freezes at 35 seconds into the slideshow. Its never had a problem with DLs before. Itried the DVD on my softmodded Wii, on a program for it called WiiMC (it uses Mplayer) and everything played fine. I tried another burn where i set the break point to fifteen minutes before the end on the main 1:23 movie and on the DVD player it still froze at 35 seconds on the slideshow. Is there anything that you guys can suggest to help?
