Dual layer read?

My G4 has a standard DVD player/burner. Can it read any thing burnt with a dual layer DVD recorder?

my father sent me some software to update my mac. It needed to reboot off his disk for the update to take affect. The mac just sat in the grey screen for 45 minutes until i shut it off. It booted up fine once i removed the disk. It sitting for some time is what made us question the dual layer disk.
here is what it shows.
Thanks
Matt

  • Reading from a Dual-Layer Disc

    Hey y'all --
I am trying to rip some video files from the VIDEO_TS folder of a dual-layered DVD-Video (I have rights to the material) using OSEX, DVDBackup, Mac the Ripper, MPEG Streamclip, and just drag-and-drop.
None of these solutions are allowing me to copy the entire dataset from the DVD-Video onto my hard drive. At best, DVDBackup copies what appears to be the first layer, but the second layer won't copy over -- I get error messages from each app, and the OS itself.
The DVDs play just dandy through DVD Player, and on set-top. There is no copy-protection or region coding on this disc. The data's all there, but I just can't seem to copy layer 2.
My DVD drive is a Pioneer DVR-108, which can read/write DVD+R DL, and I've written/read DL discs with this drive in the past.
If there's anyone who has any experience they could share -- that would be so unbelievably wonderful. Why would a dual-layer disc not be just as easy to copy from? Thanks, as always, for your help.

Should be no issue at all unless the DVD is damaged.
Try using Toast to copy the files to your HD (or Retrospect) and/or try a different DVD drive, sometimes different drives may perform better on bad discs (FWIW none of these will work if there is some copy protection on the discs, it is just something to get files off a disk that could be damaged.)

  • DVD RW DW-U10A won't read burned Dual Layer DVD

My friend created a dual layer dvd for me on his PC. I put it in my G5 and after about 15 seconds of the drive trying to read the dist it just gets spit out. It won't mount or anything.
Why is this happening? I've never had problems reading discs created on a PC. Is my drive incompatible with DVD DL+R media?

    Hi,
I've been having a similar issues since not long ago. I think it coincides with Apple,s last security update (although I can't swear the 2 are connected).
    I have a dual core 2GHz PowerMac G5 with a Pioneer DVD-R 110D Dual Layer.
I'm burning Dual Layers medias with Toast 7 (DATA, DVD-VIDEOS ETC). They all mount fine after and I can read the files etc. However if I insert the discs a few day slater, about 50% of them won't mount and are rejected without any error message!
    Anyone else has this problem?

  • Superdrive Should Read Dual Layer, but doesnt?

I recently purchased a Powerbook 17" and under the specifications, it is supposed to support Burning Dual Layer DVDs. However, upon looking under my System profiler it does not show this. Why?

Here are the specs. I would think that an 835 should support DL, it should be one of the newer drives. But I do not know. Can anyone help?

I believe only the last version of the 17" G4 PB had a DL burn capable drive. Exactly what model do you have? Your System Profiler specs indeed do not show DL capability.
You may get more info in the proper G4 17" forum - this is the 15" forum.

  • Macbook Pro doesn't seem to read Dual Layer DVDs

I was trying to restore my laptop using the original restore/install dvds that came with it. When I slip the installation discs into the optical drive, my Mac doesn't seem to read them; it just ejects them.
But I tried inserting audio CDs, data DVDs (4GB max in size) and they seem to work and recognized by my mac. My mac doesn't recognize the installation discs only. I have even went the extra mile of purchasing another Snow Leopard installation disc and the disc, which is sealed, new and fresh from the store also got ejected by the machine. I have read somewhere that the installation discs are Dual Layer DVDs. Seems like my optical drive is not reading dual layers discs anymore.
Any advice how I can mitigate this? Are there any firmware updates that I can upgrade or downgrade to? How will I know which firmware my optical drive is running on?
    Thanks!

You can reset the SMC and see if that helps. If it's a unibody or Retina, follow the method for "a battery you should not remove yourself."

  • IBook read dual-layer DVDs?

Does anyone know if the iBook G4 1ghz or higher can read dual-layer DVDs? Thanks.

Do you mean home made dual later DVD-Rs or commercially pressed DVD movies that are dual layered? The answer to both should be "yes". However, the software used to burn a home made dual layer DVD-R may or may not be compatible with a Mac...

  • Dual Layer DVD reader for Sun Blade 2500?

Can anyone recommend a dual layer DVD reader that will work with the Sun Blade 2500 (Silver)? Either something to replace the built-in single layer reader or something that will work externally either via firewire or USB.
    Thanks!

  • Can iMac read Dual Layer DVD+R???

If I use Toast to backup my G5 tower data onto a Dual Layer DVD+R disc, will my iMac Flat Panel be able to read it? I've heard that some older drives can't recognize the Dual Layer DVD+Rs.
Anyone tried a home made dual layer disc on this model iMac yet?

These are the formats supported in the iMac G4.

  • Read Dual Layer DVDs in Mac Mini 2005

My brother has a Mac Mini that he bought in late 2005.
Can he read dual layer DVDs in this optical drive? More specifically, can he use Handbrake to rip dual layer DVDs on this Mac Mini?

Might be my ignorance speaking here, but this is the first I've ever heard of a drive that won't read a dual-layer disc. The vast majority of commercial DVD movies are in DVD9 (DL) format, and I'd be beyond surprised if your iBook wasn't able to play any of them...
I don't have my iBook yet, but I'd guess the combo drive in my Mini is the same, and I've yet to find any DVDs that won't play...

  • Problem with reading Dual Layer DVDs.

I've a normal iBook G4 with a combo drive (it's the 1 Ghz model) and when I insert a dual layer dvd which I've made on another computer at school, the drive in my iBook won't read it (as in it spits it out). I was wondering if this problem extends to everyone else with a similar model/drive.
The media I used is a TDK DVD+R dual layer disc. The drive has had a problem reading a dual layered DVD-R; the problem being that it could only read (possibly) only one layer of the disc.
Is there a firmware update that can applied to rectify the problem?

Hi and thanks for your reply.
I'm actually not sure if I can read commerical dual layer DVDs, but the fact that the DVD was pressed and not burnt, and that the DVD is released for commercial purchase has lead me to believe that my drive can read the DVDs.
Also backing up my drive's ability to read dual layer DVDs, as mentioned in my previous post, is that it could read parts of a DVD-R dual layer DVD. What I meant by parts, or, just one of the two layers, is that the dvd contains a folder which houses 4 gigabytes of data, or about half the DVD. The contents within this folder can be copied to the hard drive, whereas the content on the root of the DVD can not, causing the drive to continually spin the disc, making the "trying really hard to read" noise, forcing me to restart the computer whilst holding the mouse button in order to get the dvd out.

Hi. Can my 2005 iBook G4 1.33Ghz 1.5G ram OS X 10.4.11 with combo drive read double layer or dual layer DVDs? I couldn't find any definite info anywhere. Thanks a lot!!!

    Welcome to Apple Discussions, humain.
I have been burning DL DVDs from another Mac for quite some time now. Never had any problems with the DVDs being unreadable on my PowerBooks except when there was a bad batch of discs, which then meant only the Mac that burned the disc could read it.

  • Problems with dual layer DVD reading MBPro (2009)

    Hello,
recently i wanted to take a look at a dvd that came with a magazine (for pcs, but that shouldn´t really matter here) on my macbook pro from mid 2009 (see http://support.apple.com/kb/SP541) with the latest version of osx.
Unfortunately, it didn´t succeed to read the dvd. only ejected it after doing a little searching and making strange noises.
According to the technical specifications this macbook pro should be able to at least read dual layer dvds. I won´t even try to burn one of those, because after doing a little research on the www i found a lot of entries with people going insane with the burning capabilities of macs concerning dual layer media.
Unfortunately i couldn´t find anything on the topic in the forums here. Also no official statement whether macs can or cannot cope with dl media. In my opinion, if it´s specified in the tech specs, then the computer should also live up to the expectations.
Are there any suggestions on how to go about with the matter of dl media and macs? Any information would be much appreciated. Also a notice from apple would be nice, this seems to be a matter (given, although probably not of top priority) concerning quite a lot of people and machines.
    kind regards,
    Reinhard Sommerer

    Hello again,
well - thanks for the information. i would like to point out that the dvd i was trying to use was not for burning purposes. it was a medium that came with a magazine. out of my experience sometimes these work even better than home-burnt dvds, but that might be subjective.
anyway, tonight i gave it another try with the cleansed medium. apx. in the same condition as last time (had stored it in a safe place) and big surprise: this time it didn´t read neither side again. kind of a drawback - maybe tomorrow i´ll have more luck again.
so my hopes for an apple official to comment on this forum won´t be heard, i guess. although it appeared to me that last time here i had seen a user profile resembling an official apple profile. but i might be wrong, i´ll just keep on wondering about this so-called dl-drive.
    kind regards,
    reinhard

Just cut together a video on FCP - and using DVD studio pro I'm ready to burn it. It's 5.1GB and so had to make it a dual layer film. I've just bought Verbatim Dvd-r 8.5gb 4 Speed Advazo Dual Layer 5pk to burn BUT it wont read it. Is this a superdrive issue or have I bought the wrong blank dvd's?

If you want to make dual layer DVDs with you present computer, I think you need an external Firewire dual layer DVD drive and an app that handles dual layers like Toast. I think the latest version of iDVD handles dual layer external drives; I do not know about DVD Studio Pro.
You can also replace your current internal drive with a dual layer drive.
