Dual Layer Selection

Ok, so I was trying to put something on DVD using a dual layer disc, which has over an 8gig capacicty. However, I did is telling me dual layers only have 7.7g (in the project info and preferences menu), and it won't let me change it. And my project is apparently 7.7g, but must just be over the limit. Why can't I use my full dual layer disc capacity?

Hi Ethansfilm,
Although the case says 8.5GB you've got 7.95GB and less to play with...

So you're still in just! but as iDVD wants to use some of your capacity for other stuff you're still over I guess,

  • Select Dual Layer Option even without a DL-Burner

My problem is the following: I would like to create a iDVD-project which has the size of a dual-layer DVD and save it as an image. Unfortunately I do not own a DL-burner and therefore the Dual Layer option is grayed out.
Is there a solution to make this option selectable even without a DL-burner?
Thank you very much for your replies

    No way that I know...
Do you know someone with an DL external FireWire burner? That might work.

  • Player compatibility problem with dual layer media

I've created a dual layer DVD and there is a problem with compatibility from player to player.
It plays fine in one of my DVD players but will not load in the other.
The duplicators tested my master on 2 players and it loaded on both, but would lock up if a chapter was selected from the submenu.
It has 4 tracks of content. 3 menus, and a bunch of chapter markers. The original build had stories (replaced with standard chapter markers) but I removed them hoping it would solve the problem.
The imported video tracks were created with Compressor. MPEG-2 2 pass VBR max bit rate 7.5. AC3 audio tracks. 7.7 GB on disc.
I'm already way over my deadline and ahve no idea what to do next other than maybe recompress so the disc is not so close to being maxed out.

Thats just how compatible that media is... +R DL (double layer) & -R DL are not that compatible. Recordable media is less compatible that replicated discs but double and dual layer media can be 50% compatible at best (depending on your target market...)
Good quality media, Verbatim +R DL for example burnt at slow speeds helps improve things,

  • Keeps asking for Dual layer DVD

I made a slideshow in iMovie and shared to iDVD8. The media windows shows the file as 2.7 gig. But when I go to burn it says to insert a Dual Layer DVD because the project to large.
I dont have anything else in the project other then the menu which is 3 drop areas. Nothing to it.
I tried sharing again from imovie and selected medium this time with a files size of 1.7gig and i still get the same thing.
I do have quality set for PRO.

good question. I used the Theme that has half the screen as a grey fade. When i added music to it i changed it to 25 secs of playback. I would assume then my menu is only 25sec. It only has 1 button to start the movie.
At this point I have a DVD+R DL created that works fine my PC. After googling around I read about DL and changing the bitsetting before burning so that a TV DVD Player sees the disk as a DVD-ROM.
Would I be able to copy this DVD+R DL with Toast 8 and change that setting to make it work?
BTW, thank you for all the replies.

    Richard,
    You stated:
This is what I have also started doing and it seems to work.
That is great news. Though I have never had an issue with the Layer-break on a DVD-9 in Encore, part of that could be that I edit my Sequences as Chapters and then have a separate Timeline for each of those. I've never even done a Chapter Playlist, because of my workflow.
Also, when using ImgBurn for DVD-9's, I've never had any problems either, and have appreciated the greater control with regards to the Layer-breaks.
I hope that ImgBurn continues to work for you.
    Good luck,
    Hunt
PS I love the little dialog and error messages in ImgBurn. I'll often do something deliberately wrong, just to see what the message will be - I need to get a life!

  • Does my iMac have a dual layer burner?

I'm trying to burn a 155 minute dvd. I only have 120 minute blank dvds.
I'm told I need to buy dual layer dvds but this will only work if I have a dual layer burner.
    I have a PIONEER DVD-RW  DVRTS09.
    Am I good to go?

The best way to find out if you have a Dual Layer DVD Burner, is to click  then "About This Mac" then Click on More Info, then in the new System Profiler window, on the left hand side select "Disc Burning". Youll be presented with something that looks like this (This is from my 24-inch Late 2006 iMac):
    OPTIARC DVD RW AD-5630A:
      Firmware Revision:          2CH9
      Interconnect:          ATAPI
Burn Support:          Yes (Apple Shipping Drive)
      Cache:          2048 KB
      Reads DVD:          Yes
      CD-Write:          -R, -RW
      DVD-Write:          -R, -R DL, -RW, +R, +R DL, +RW
      Write Strategies:          CD-TAO, CD-SAO, CD-Raw, DVD-DAO
Media:          To show the available burn speeds, insert a disc and choose View > Refresh
What you'll be looking for here, in the DVD-Write section which I've bolded and underlined for quick spotting, if you have -R DL and/or +R DL, those are Dual Layer DVDs that you can write to.
***Be careful as some Macs shipped with Dual Layer Drives (MATSHITA Brand) that only burned +R DL Dual Layer DVDs, meaning you CANNOT burn -R DL Dual Layer DVDs. So make sure you verify that your drive supports the dual layer DVDs that youll be purchasing before you go to the store.

  • Problems with break point in Dual Layer project

    Hi,
I'm currently having a problem setting a break point in a Dual Layer DVD project in DVD Studio Pro 4. I have a project that has 5.9 GB of data (5 shows with between 7-8 chapters in each). The problem I'm having is that in the 5th chapter of the 4th show, there is a freeze frame hickup when I burn the disk. I've tried moving around the chapter mark, deleting them and re-adding them, re-exporting the media (it is in MPEG-2) in all combinations of those and am still having the freeze problem at that chapter mark. I've gone back to the original media and there are no problems there.
What I think the problem is is that the disk is automatically setting the break point for the dual layer disk at that chapter mark. However, when I go into the project and try to set the break point manually from the dropdown, I can't seem to select anything. The default is the begining of the 5th track, and I can only change it to automatic and back again. Anything else I select just goes back to that 5th track, but I still think it's actually doing automatic instead. I'm using a Verbatim DVD+R DL if that helps anything as well.
To all, do you agree that the problem is most likely due to the break point? And if so, how do I change the break point to the beginning of either the 3rd or 4th of the shows instead of having it seem to be stuck on automatic?
    Thanks in advance,
    Chris

Alright, to answer my own question. Here's what I think the problem was.
There are actually two Disk/Volume menus: one in the Disk settings when you're actually working in the project and another when you go to build and format. I kept trying to set the break point in the first one--in the disk settings in the project--and it wouldn't let me because it can only be set when building and formatting.
It's kind of an annoying settup that there are two identical menus that don't fully communicate with each other, but in the end the solution has been solved.

  • Two hour sequence to dual-layer DVD?

    Hi,
    I'm confused.
I have a two hour 16:9 sequence (actually 1 hour, 56 minute) that I want to put on a dual-layer DVD. I guess I didn't fully think it through when I sent it from FCP to Compressor and selected DVD 16:9 120 minute fastest encode, because it compressed it to 4.04 gigs rather than twice that size at a better quality. Now I'm looking for a setting that tells it my destination is a dual-layer DVD and I don't see it.
Additionally, the m2v file that came from that process cut off the final minute or so of my sequence. Why in the world would that happen?
    Kenny

These instructions assume you're using DSP for authoring. I don't know if iDVD has DL capability.
The 'calculator' in Compressor assumes a single layer DVD. The key is to look at the summary, which is the far left tab in the Inspector. About 1/3 from the top, it will show the estimated file size. Adjust the bit rate selector until you get the file size approaching the capacity of the Dual Layer disk. You have other restrictions to consider as well. Totally data rate of video(s)audio(s)other data cannot exceed the maximum for the DVD spec (nominally 10mb/s).
Once inside DSP, when you burn the disk, you'll be asked to select a marker to indicate where the burner will change from writing to the first layer to the second layer. This should occur at a convenient location in the video (a fade to black, eg.) near the end of the first layer capacity. If you don't already have a marker near that point, be sure to add one for the switch-over.
    Good luck

  • Will iDVD 6 burn a dual layer with 3rd party burners

    G'day from Oz.
I've posted similar to this under the iDVD 5 forum, as this forum wasn't started, but no answer yet. Hopefully people browsing here have updated to iLife 6.
    Quote from .... http://www.apple.com/ilife/idvd/
    "Go for the burn.
Once you finish your DVD masterpiece, only one step remains. Burning it. Thanks to stellar compatibility, iDVD 6 makes the big burn a painless process.
With support for a wide variety of DVD media formats — including DVD-R, DVD-RW, DVD+R, DVD+RW, and DVD+R DL — iDVD 6 teams up with a compatible SuperDrive or third-party DVD burner to offer you more media options than ever. You heard right: iDVD lets you burn using compatible third-party DVD burners.
iDVD even lets you archive projects as disc images. Saved this way, your projects are extremely portable and take up less space, and are read-only. What’s more, they’re already encoded, so you can quickly burn them to DVD whenever you have a free moment or a burner handy".
    end Quote.
    ** Note the 'DVD+R DL'. **
Does this mean that burning a dual layer project with dual layer 3rd party burners will be supported?
I've updated to 10.4.4, but my Sony dual layer burner still shows as 'Burn Support: Yes (Unsupported)', in 'About this Mac'. The 'unsupported' means 'no dual layer burning' as far as I know. Also, I believe dual burning is only supported from within the OS itself? True or not?
Let's see who's first to try the new iDVD 6 out with a 3rd party burner & dual layer disk. If it works, it means iDVD 6 really does support third party burners.
    Please post results.

    G'day.
Further to my post a week ago re this subject, from the iDVD 6 help pages.
    Quote
Newer SuperDrive optical drives in Macintosh computers can burn discs in DVD+R DL (Double Layer) format. Double-layer discs store almost twice as much content as single-layer discs, making them a great choice for large projects.
To see if your computer's SuperDrive can burn DVD+R DL discs, choose Project > Project Info. If you see 8.0 GB (Double Layer) in the DVD Type pop-up menu, you can use these discs for your project.
To burn a project to a DVD+R DL disc:
Choose Project > Project Info and choose 8.0 GB (Double Layer) from the DVD Type pop-up menu.
Select the encoder setting you want to use. If you have more than 120 minutes of content, select Best Quality.
    Click OK.
Click the Burn button (shown above).
Insert the disc when you see the prompt.
If your project is small enough to fit on a single-layer disc and you insert a double-layer disc, you see a dialog giving you the option to change the media type. You can cancel the burn and start again, or insert a new disc and continue.
You should always burn double-layer discs directly from iDVD and not from a disc image. Double-layer discs burned from a disc image may cause playback issues in some DVD players, such as freezing during playback.
    End quote
The last sentence is interesting, as the commonly suggested method of burning Dual layer discs is by first creating a disc image, then burning with Toast or Disk Utility.
Also, my Sony shows up as supporting 8 Gig in iDVD 6, but still shows as 'unsupported' in System Profiler.

  • Dual layer not compatible

I have recently made two wedding videos for people burned on my internal apple superdrive and both couples had difficult time watching it on their dvd players. Both people had trouble after chapter 14. It worked on my home dvd player (Sony) but they are unable to watch it after that chapter.
Is there a way to fix it or are their dvd players incompatible?
Why is this an issue with dual layer?
    Power Mac g5   Mac OS X (10.4.3)

It has to do with the dual layer dvd recordable. Correct me if I'm wrong, but you used a DVD+R, right?
These are said to be less compatible with home players right now, than DVD-R.
Chapter 14 might be the layer change. These players may have a problem with the reflectivity of the media. You could gently suggest to your clients that they select a new dvd player. Someone on this board always suggests bringing some burned discs to the store to test the players there. If the sales people want the sale, they'll be happy to oblige.
Another solution is to split the projects onto 2 discs. The folks I work with doing Weddings and Special Events don't do dual layer dvd recordables yet, because we made one in the office and it wouldn't play on our machines.
This is ultimately the final test. Get your clients their video in a format they can easily watch and share with others.
    Good luck!

  • Dual Layer DVD...

I want to burn my movie onto a dual layer DVD. There is a selection in DVDSP4 for dual layer, but how do I prep it for a lower compression/dual layer option in Compressor?

Not necessarily - passes impact the encode time, the first pass is a test encode, the second one is the real thing (think of it has a rough draft). It has nothing to do with whether you're using single or dual layer media.
It shouldn't change size in DVDSP - once the file is encoded that's it - it's going to stay that size no matter what. If its coming out at 4.7 GB you may be able to get away with single layer media.

  • Dual layer disk, single layer capacity! What am I missing

    Greetings,
I have a project which is 6GB in size, so I'm burning onto a dual-layer DVD which 'Project Information' says is ~7.2GB in size. For the record this matches what 'More Info' gives me when I insert a blank disk and check the details from the desktop DVD icon. I also select 'dual layer' in the Project setup.
Problem is that this seems to truncate at ~4.9GB.
If I get 'More Info' from the burned DVD it says that the capacity is 4.9GB and it's full.
    What am I missing here?
    Any help greatly appreciated.
    jon

I guess for the same reason that completing the iDVD
    tutorial isn't compulsory...
...which, of course, everyone reads dutifully... however, at the risk of sounding trite, while the manual says "select Best Quality when recording dual-layer disks" it doesn't add the killer-qualifier "... otherwise your disks won't record properly" *. This is the lesson learnt.
Just to be clear here - this issue is not about misunderstanding the potential vs actual capacity within the two encoding-modes, as iDVD indicates in the Project Info that this is sufficient...
By the way... referring to '*' above and to wrap this bad boy up nicely I can confirm that the recommendation from SDMacuser is totally on the money - if you encode the image to disk and then use Disk-Utility/Toast to burn to the disk at a slower speed then everything's just fine and dandy... so maybe the manual should be modified to append "... unless you're encoding to a disk image which you then burn to media using Disky Utility"
    Thanks to all
    ev@0r8
The name of the two compression modes can be confusing: 'Best
Performance' gives you UP TO 60 minutes of content on a SL disc and
UP TO 120 minutes of content on a DL disc. 'Best Quality' gives
you UP TO 120 minutes of content on a SL disc and UP TO 240
minutes of content on a DLdisc.

  • Dual Layer HELP

I've created a DVD (dual layer) with 6,8 GB content.
Everything works perfectly in the simulator, but not after build:
My main film is 50 minutes long and then I have 10 extra sequences that are between 5-15 minutes.
All my menus have movie-backgrounds. There are 4 menues that loop after 30 secs.
Now how can I determain where the break point should be?
What I would prefer is that my menus with the movie-backgrounds and the main feature is on layer one and all the extra sequences on layer two.
But when I build the project all my menus are grey'd out, so I assume that DVDSP build them (because all backgrounds are movies) to be on the wrong layer from the rest of the menu.
I've tried to set the breakpoint to be the first chapter on one of my extra sequences, but that doesn't help.
Does it have anything to do with the order I've imported the assets into DVDSP?
    Any help is highly appreciated.

Since you are using a Dual Layer Disc, there has to be a break point where it crosses over from Layer 0 to Layer 1, if you have no Chapter Markers at all (or a limited number of Markers, none of which fall near the point where more than half the project will be placed on Layer 0)
    What you do is
1.) Set up markers in the areas where your would guesstinmate the Layer Break(s) should be
2.) Build the project (but not format)
3.) Format a Disc (in the dialog that comes up, click on advanced tab, then where it says break point, use the pulldown which will have all valid breakpoint markers dark/black, while non-valid Layer Break Markers will be faded) and select one of the darkend selections. If there is not break point, even automatic setting of the break point will not work.
    4.) Press burn

  • Dual Layer option grayed out in iDVD '08

I have been struggling to get a movie burned for awhile, partly due to learning the software on my new iMac (2.4 GHz 24") and the other part spent learning the size requirement limits for a Dual Layer disc (not sure I have my project trimmed all the way down yet).
I finally have what I think is a finished project, am ready to try to burn it and all of a sudden iDVD will not allow me to select "Dual Layer" as an option in the Project Info dialog (the option is locked on single layer and grayed out). I tried rebooting and that made no difference. The drive is the built-in DL burner.
This is a new problem as I have been able to make this selection in the past. Any ideas?
    Thanks in advance.
    -John

Is your project over 60 mins. but under 120 mins.? You'll have to address the project info window like this:
You should have an option available to you under DVD Type to select DL as opposed to SL. If it's grayed out, quit iDvd and and relaunch the app again. You may have to do this more than once (assuming you are using the correct media and that your mac sees the appropriate DL burner).
Plus you must select the appropriate media when burning to DL. I recommend using Verbatim or Maxell while troubleshooting on this forum. Thereafter you can choose whatever works best for you and your mac.
In addition, please read the following from the iDvd08 Getting Started pfd:
    Checking the Project Info Window
DVD projects can take up a lot of space on your hard disk, and it’s useful to know when
you need to make more room. In addition, a DVD disc has a maximum capacity. As
you’re working on your project, monitoring its size will ensure that everything fits.
The Project Info window, shown below, provides all this information and more.
To check the size of your project:
m Choose Project > Project Info.
Â The total size of your project, in running time (in minutes) and in size (in megabytes
or gigabytes), shows below the Capacity meter on the far right.
Â The Capacity meter shows how much of your project’s total size is used by each of its
elements. The bands of color indicate what proportion of the project each element
    accounts for.
Â The numbers below DVD-ROM, Slideshows, Menus, and Movies specify how much
space (in gigabytes) each uses. When you click these numbers, the display switches
to show the number of these items in your project and how many tracks they use. An
iDVD project can have up to 99 tracks.
DVD-ROM refers to the content you’ve specified to be added to the DVD-ROM
portion of your burned DVD. The running time and size figures that appear below
Menus reflect the total duration of all the menus in the project. You can have a total
of 15 minutes of motion, such as video on buttons or in the background, in all
menus. A project can include up to 99 menus.
In general, the amount of content your iDVD project contains correlates to the quality
of your burned DVD, given the encoding setting you have chosen. The white arrow in
the Capacity meter points to the quality of your burned DVD. Quality is highest on the
green portion of the Quality meter. If you have chosen Best Performance as your
encoding setting, the entire Quality meter may be green.
Hope this helps but if not come on back.

  • Dual Layer Burner

Tried the Plextor 750UX with DVD Studio Pro 4. First layer burns fine, second layer consistently has a few corrupted files; therefore doesn't work. Use Memorex DVD+R for media. Called Plextor, they said the 750UX does not work well with DVD Studio Pro.
Has anyone had consistent success burning dual layer DVD's with DVD Studio Pro 4? If so, which burner do you use?
    Note - Platform is G5, OX v10.4.2.
    Thanks.

I also would get rid of the Memorex media. I have had terrible luck with it. Here is a great site that lists media quality and manufactuers.
    http://www.digitalfaq.com/media/dvdmedia.htm
If you look about a 1/3 of the way down the page, you will see links for Media Inspectors. The Mac version webpage is in Japanese, but I figured it out. it's a great tool. I use it on every Master I burn now to make sure that I'm using good quality media irregardless of what's branded on the disc.
I try to stay with Verbatim as a practice. On the DL projects I use +R and on Single Layer I use -R. I've also had great luck with Sony +R on Single Layer projects.
When burning a DL I try my best to have multiple tracks in the project and I usually create a seperate track that contains nothing but the break marker for the disc.
I then build the project. If I get a good build I burn (in Toast) if not, it's very easy to use the VTS editor to move content above the breaker track to ensure Layer 0 is greater than Layer1.
In toast, I choose DL and choose to burn a data DVD selecting the DVD-ROM (UDF) method.
Simply drag the folder containing the Audio_TS and Video_TS folders onto the interface and burn.
The break point remains intact, and all works well. For burners I use the Pioneer DVR-109 and the LaCie d2 DVD+-RW with Lightscribe
