Dual Layer Superdrive doesn't recognize DL Discs

Not sure if there is another thread on this, I cannot find one. If so please supply me with the link.
I have a Powerbook G4 and it came with a combo drive. A while back I purchased a Matshita DVD-Ram UJ-845S Dual Layer DVD burner from Other World Computing. I never really tried using it until recently.
I am trying to back up my home movies via Backup and when I insert a DL DVD it recognizes it as a CD, not even a DVD.(The DVD's I am using came with my DL Burner) I had a certified Apple Tech install the DVD drive in my Powerbook to avoid voiding my warranty. I bought the DL DVD burner to avoid using multiple disc and to backup my movies that I bought.
Are there any driver updates or something?
Any help would be appreciated.
Jeremy

I might have figured it out, but I am not 100% sure. I think the disc's I got w/ the DVD burner are CD-R's. I put one of them in an older laptop(w/ only a CD burner and it said it too was a CD-R disc.
Not sure if that is the problem. I am going to go buy some DL discs and try them and when I do I will post.

  • IDVD 08, dual layer DVD doesn't burn last 2 minutes of audio

    Hello,
iDVD 08, dual layer DVD doesn't burn last 2 minutes of audio, I get perfect audio/video through the whole DVD except the last 2 minutes or so...
I'm burning a 3 hour DVD on iDVD 08. I'm burning it only a DL+R Dual Layer disc. I've burned with "high quality" compression, "professional quality" compression. I've even burned the last 2 minutes of the timeline just to make sure it wasn't the quicktime file and the video and audio played fine.
The size of the project in the setting reads the project as 6.5 GB out of the 7.7 available on the disc.
So why does it always cut off the audio the last 2 minutes of the DVD? Any suggestions?

Try making a disc image to the desktop (from the file menu in iDvd) and see if it plays fine with apple's dvd player app.

  • Burning a 2h30min project without a dual layer superdrive

I have a dual layer Lacie external dual layer DVD writer, I recently purchased iLife because I was told that you can burn dual layer projects with iDVD 5.
Obviously, as I have found out, you can only do this with a dual layer internal superdrive.
I have tried the patch to make iDVD burn larger projects(from the French site Hardmac) and it didn't work for me, also tried to save as disc image but to no avail.
Is there anyway to get my project onto a dual layer DVD without shortening it, would be good if iDVD gave you the option to split the project over 2 discs.

    Hello, Robert!
Have a look at this. A rep from LaCie posted to it: http://discussions.info.apple.com/webx?128@@.68b9ba73

  • DVD Drive Doesn't recognize Media Disc

I have an Envy dv7. Product # B6B75AV. DVD drive hpBD MLT UJ260
I have a program that will copy a dvd from the source, dvd drive #1, to the target same dvd drive #1.
When it is done copying the disc it ejects the original and asks to have a writable media disc inserted.
When I insert the DVD  the drive doesn't recognize the blank dvd, keeps asking for it, and when I put it in, it spits back out saying to insert a writable disc.  I have used the blank DVD+R for burning other things so it should work.  I tired putting in 4 different blank discs to make sure the disc was ok.
Is there anyway to find out for sure whether this DVD writer uses DVD+R or DVD-R?
    Any help will be appreciated.

  • Has anyone installed a dual layer superdrive in early model imac g5?

I want to install a dual layer burner in my imac g5 1.8 ghz machine. Apple chat tells me that this is not possible with my machine. I would like to know if anyone has done this and did it work for them. Thanks
    imac G5 1.8Ghz   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

I bought a Panasonic UJ-845 DVD burner from OWC and installed it in my old iMac G5 1.8 ghz. There was a wee bit of minor work to replace it (you have to transfer the sled using a Torex wrench and have to remove and replace the plastic bezel.) Installation was simple and took only 15 min.
I ran it for a couple of days, removed it and returned it to OWC. Yes, it burned dual layer disks but was just as slooow as the original DVD drive. HORRIBLY SLOW!
I then bought an external Firewire DVD burner from OWC (Pioneer based drive). I'm very happy with the burn speeds on it for single and deal layer disks.
If you insist on an internal drive, remember the Panasonic UJ-845 drive is universal. ZipZoomFly.com has it listed at $89.99 with free shipping. (ZipZoomFly Part# 175300 ) That's $40 cheaper than the exact same drive that OWC sells.
    Good luck.

  • LG 4165b superdrive doesn´t recognize DVD-R space correctly..

    Hello!
i´m having a problem with my recently installed Superdrive.
here´s what´s happening: when I insert a blank DVD I get the usual Finder message asking me what to do with it. When i mount it, the finder sees it as a CD instead of a DVD and tells me i don´t have enough space on disk to burn anything... i´ve tried burning a 200mb file and it says the disk doesn´t have enough space.
It was working allright and i think the problem started after i insterted a Movie DVD and i got asked to change the DVD region...
    any thoughts?
    thanks a lot..
Powermac 1.25ghz dual processor   Mac OS X (10.3.6)

    Hi
All new drives have to have the region code set, it is normal for that message to come up the first time a commercial DVD is inserted. It would have no bearing on the Finder issue.
Did you run PatchBurn (search discussions if you need it, it's been linked many times) after installing the drive? It is needed for iAPP/Finder burn support in any OS prior to Tiger.
You could also try from iTunes or iPhoto to see if the media is identified any differently; also if you have Toast, I would try from there to see if it properly identifies the media; also you should include all info in your post as to type (-/+), brand, etc., of the media you are using, confirm that it is indeed DVD.
You might also try from a different User account, to determine if the issue is just in your account.

  • Superdrive doesn't recognize DVDs

I have a new Macbook Pro with the following specifications. It reads data CDs fine, but I've tried several DVDs and I continue to get the same response in DVD Player:
    "Supported Disc Not Available"
I tried the recent firmware updater, but it tells me that my computer doesn't need it and won't get me continue. Is the drive just a lemon?
I'm not sure if this is related, but the drive also makes a strange clicking sound when any disc is inserted - as if something is bending the wrong way and nearly breaking. Has any one else experienced these sounds?
    Thanks!

    From Mac help:
"To reset PRAM, first shut down your computer. Turn the computer back on and immediately press and hold Command-Option-P-R until you hear the startup sound for the second time.
If resetting PRAM doesn't solve the problem, then reset NVRAM. When the "To continue booting ..." message appears, type "reset-nvram" and press Return. Then type "reset-all" and press Return.
If the computer restarts, you have successfully reset the NVRAM settings."
I like the use of that word, "If" in the last sentence.
And if it does not restart?????

  • Superdrive doesn't recognize some DVDs

Hi there, I'm a proud and happy owner of a 17" iMac with Superdrive - bought it three weeks ago. No problem until yesterday when the Supedrive started giving some problems with movies on DVDs (official ones, not burned). If I put a disc inside it, then it starts loading it for a minute or two, but the volume never appears on the desktop. Eject key didn't work either, so I restared tha mac and after some seconds the disc comes out - which is fine, but not the way it should work. Same problem with another disc which the mac previously recognized. The DVD was just bought so I suppose there was no fault with the disc (which worked with my DVD home player). Any suggestion? Should I ask for a replacement for the drive?

    Hello gefne99,
I would be concerned too if my SuperDrive was not recognizing some CDs and DVDs.
First, I recommend resetting the System Management Controller (SMC) on your iMac:
Resetting the SMC for Mac Pro, Intel-based iMac, Intel-based Mac mini, or Intel-based Xserve
    Shut down the computer.
    Unplug the computer's power cord.
    Wait fifteen seconds.
    Attach the computer's power cord.
Wait five seconds, then press the power button to turn on the computer.
You can find the full article here:

If the SuperDrive is still unable to load some discs, I recommend reviewing the article below next:

  • I have a Power Mac G4. I have previously burned DVDs with no problem.  Now I get an error message stating it doesn't recognize the disc and an error

I have a Power Mac G4 with OX 10.4.11.  I have previously burned DVDs with no problem.  Now I've gotten two different sets of messages.  One states that
the disc is not readable and an error code: 0x8002006D.  The more recent message states the disc is incompatible and an error code: 0x80020025.
What is going on?  I need to burn discs immediately for a conference next week.

"The more recent message states the disc is incompatible and an error code: 0x80020025."
The error (0x80020025) refers to an unsupported drive (not disk).  I've read about relaunching the Finder to correct the problem.  Choose "Force Quit" from the Apple Menu and then choose "Finder." Click "Relaunch" and see if the drive still produces the error.  If there's no change, I'd be tempted to replace the drive.

  • Superdrive doesn't recognize blank disks

Was trying to burn some photo's to a disk today. When I inserted a blank disk into the superdrive, it would come up and ask what action to take. I would select open Finder. Then it would come back and say disk not recognized. I tried two brands of DVD's and one CD. I have used each of these in the drive before with no issue.
Then I moved the files to my MBP and burned the photo's to disk with no issue. After burning, I reinserted the disk into the iMac and it could read the disk with no issue.
Anyone seen this before and have advice before I call applecare ??

Are you by chance using a Western Digital external hard drive with your computer? I am having that same exact problem and I can't figure out what is causing it! I have reinstalled my os like 5 times and when I move my applications back I keep running into the same problem. I've tried just putting them back one at a time but I didn't run into the problem until I reboot my computer. I'm curious if my hard drive's software is what's causing the problem, because I had installed my hard drive's software about 3 days before it started doing this.

  • Is my superdrive dual layer?

I have a macbook pro. I was pretty sure it was a dual layer superdrive when I bought it, but I recently tried to use Toast 8 to burn DVD-video to a DL DVD-R. It gave me an error about half way and quit. System profiler says I have a HL-DT-ST DVDRW GWA4080MA

If you look in system profiler under the disk burning entry it will tell you what it supports.
    If you were
    a) not burning Verbatim DL ( say you were using the cheap-o Memorex DVD DL)
    b) doing other stuff at the same time
Then you will get failures. The whole DL hullaballo is a huge inconvenient waste of money. Twice the capacity at 10X the cost and coasters more often than not. Try better media and hands off while it works.

  • Will dual layer 9GB DVDs work w/ PB G4 Superdrive?

Has anyone successfully burned 9GB DVD R media with a Powerbook Superdrive? My G4 is about 3 years old and 9GB was not available at the time.
    Thanks,

    Welcome to the Apple discussions.
I believe you need a dual layer superdrive to benefit from the dual layer DVDs. The dual layer superdrive was only available on the last Powerbook model, with the hi-rez screen.

  • New Double Layer Superdrive

OK, so the new MacBook Pro just released has a double layer superdrive. Yet us early adopters were told it could not be done because of the size of the MacBook. Hmmm, so does that mean we are going to be left out in the cold with no options for upgrades?

Almost certainly. Only on one occasion recently has Apple offered upgrades for their laptop drives (DVD to DVD-R in first and second gen TiBooks). The rumor was this was done to replenish a stock of spares for the Cube and TiBook range.
At the time the MacBook Pro was released, only Matshita made the 9.5mm drives used in the MacBook Pro (vs 12.5mm drives in the Powerbooks and most PC laptops).
Either Apple has rearranged things significantly inside (which I doubt) or Matshita has released a 9.5mm Dual Layer Superdrive (most likely). There may be a third party company selling the part at some point in the future which could allow an upgrade (Part will probably be called a UJ-867, but I'm sure pictures will appear soon)

  • What is the best external, dual-layer DVD burner?

    Greetings.
My powerbook superdrive is jammed, and upon inspection by a Apple certified technician, it looks like I need a replacement.
The problem: Not under warranty and the internal Apple dual-layer superdrive is EXPENSIVE.
I'm looking to buy an external drive and I was wondering if anyone has a drive that meets these requirements:
    -dual layer capability
-compatible with all iLife apps (especially iDVD and iTunes)
-packaged with a quality burning program (example: Toast)
    Thanks for you input!
    Powerbook G4 15'' 1.5   Mac OS X (10.4.3)

The LaCie D2 comes with a full not "LE" version of Toast, burns at 16X and has software called LaCie profiles you install to enable iLife compatibility. Not that it matters much - for iDVD it is better to make a disk image and then use Toast to burn it after you are happy with the image.
