Dual Link DVI

Hey guys,
I have a MacMini which is a couple of years old now, it has ONLY a DVI connector on the back, no display port.
I recently bought a Dell U271 monitor which is capable of going up to 2560x1440 using a Dual Link DVI cable under Linux.  If I take the same cable and plug it into the Mac Mini, it only goes up to 1920x1080.
Can it go higher?  Or does this question apply: https://discussions.apple.com/message/6672268#6672268 and it's only single dvi out?
Thanks
amir.

Also, switching to a single DVI cable gives me the option of using 2048x1152, but no higher.

  • How do I get my Macbook Pro 15" to run dual monitor setup with Dual Link DVI outputs

I own have two 27" 2560x1440 WQHD LED IPS Computer monitors and have been trying to get them to work with my macbook pro 15" w retina for over a month now. I have purchased multiple products and nothing has worked. The big problem is that the only input that the monitors have is a Dual Link DVI input. The closest that i have gotten to getting them to work was this morning when I bought 2 Mini Display Port to Dual Link DVI Adapters for $99 a peice. Below is a link
    http://store.apple.com/us/product/MB571Z/A/mini-displayport-to-dual-link-dvi-ada pter?afid=p219%7CGOUS&cid=AOS-US-KWG-PLA
Problem is that when I hook them up, I still only get a picture on one of the screens. Also, it requires you to plug into a mini Display port and USB port which takes up all of the space for me to run any othe peripherals. Though it has a built in USB port, when I plug my apple keybaord into it, I get an saying "USB Device Needs power, connect "keyboard Hub" to power or usb port on this mac"
I have looked everywhere for a docking station that would satisfy my needs, however, it does not exist. I use my macbook as my main office computer and take it home with me every night. I switched from the lenovo thinkpad to the macbook and have been satsified with my decision except for the fact that i cannot connect my monitors to it.
    Please help!

Yes, that would work, however it would cost me $2000 for the monitors.

  • 30'' Cinema Display with mini-display-port to dual link DVI adapter usb hub

Hi all, I don't know if any one of you experience this issue and can help me.
I am using an unibody macbook pro (late2008 model) to connect to a 30'' cinema display via the famous $100 mini diaplay port to dual link DVI adapter. I have connected the usb cable from the ACD to the adapter and the usb cable of the adapter to my macbook pro. This setting works fine under OSX 10.5.7.
When I am using Windows Vista under bootcamp the USB hub on the back of the ACD doesn't work. The device manager of Vista shows an excalmatory mark besides the device "Generic usb hub"; and it reports a problem of "the device cannot be started".
I doubted this problem is due to Windows cannot recognise the $100 adapter as a "generic usb hub"; and apple has not release a driver for this $100 adapter for windows.
Since my MBP only has 2 usb ports and the $100 adapter already occupied one, it would be very much helpful if the usb hub of the ACD can work just like in OSX. Can anyone think of any suggestion?
Much appreciated for reading this post and thank you.

i don't have an answer for you, but i feel your pain. very frustrating when this happens with Apple products and Vista/Bootcamp. wish they were more compatible, for it would make things so much easier for the consumer.

  • Apple's Mini Displayport to Dual link DVI Adapter... What to do?

So i'm doing a new setup with 6 monitors (Eyefinity 6), and i've got everything set up so far... Except for adapters. So i went and got 4 Of those Accel MDP to DVI SL adapters, in addition to the two passive that come with a card. Didn't work...
So i got two Apple Mini Displayport to Dual Link DVI Adapters... And boy, I should have read the reviews before buying them. They are giving me very strange issues. Not going above 800X600, serious graphics corruption on the monitors connected to the apple adapters, or odd resolutions that the monitors do not support.
So i'm wondering what to do. If possible, i'd like to get these to work somehow, as i got them for cheaper than other MDP to Dual Link adapters. They are both plugged in to the USB ports of my mac pro.
I've also heard something about a firmware version, 1.2 or something. Is there a way to update the firmware of these?
    Thanks
    -C

I'm using the Sapphire 5870 Eyefinity 6 Edition. Two of them in crossfire, supplied their power from an external 1200W PSU Devoted just to them.
It's under Windows 7, running on my mac Pro 2.26.
Hooking them both up to a iphone cube-wall charger keeps them up and running, but they fail to supply the necessary resolution (One only registers 640X The other dimension, the other thinks the monitor is 1920X1080, when it really is 1920X1200).
Not to mention, attempting to use any of them in an extended desktop led to a MACHINECHECKEXCEPTION bsod.
I can't find any sign of what the whole issue is, i'm having issues with the eyefinity setup itself too, so i dunno if its the adapters, the card, drivers, or what. The apple adapters are acting up on me though.

Yes. A single-link DVI connection can't drive that monitor at its maximum resolution.

    Hey guys,
I found out an answer by myself...
The missing link : the MacBook Pro needs to be powered... as in you need to plug the charger in...
In conclusion, you simply plug everything, turn on the MacBook Pro, close the lid, and there you go !

  • Switching between Dell 4K display and Apple Mini DisplayPort To Dual-Link DVI Adapter

    Hi All,
I've recently upgraded my home setup to a Dell 4K display (Dell P2815Q), which since the 10.9.3 update work as expected.
However the downside is that my office setup uses a Mini displayport to Dual-Link DVI adapter (Firmware version 1.03) and a Dell 30" display (2560x1600), which will not work without a reboot after using the 4K display. If I use the 4K display after using the Dual-Link DVI adapter it works fine.
Is this a know issue ? If not, I'm happy to provide some more diagnostic information to help resolve the issue.

    http://www.everymac.com/ says:
*This model supports a simultaneous maximum resolution up to 2560x1600 on two external displays via Thunderbolt. Alternately, it can support a single display up to 2560x1600 via Thunderbolt and a single 1080p display at up to 60 Hz, 3840x2160 at 30 Hz, or 4096x2160 at 24 Hz via HDMI.
DVI is not mentioned at all.  You probably need to connect to the display via HDMI to get the 4096x2160 resolution.

  • HT1338 Dual Link DVI Adapter Doesn't Work

I have a brand new MacBook Pro with Retina which replaced a 17" MacBook Pro. The 17" machine was connected via an Apple-branded Dual Link DVI adapter to a Dell 30" (2560 x 1600) external display - the best I can get the MacBook Pro/Retina to do is 1600 x 1000 using the same adapter that the 17" was using.
I have run all system updates - including one that was targeted at stability/support for external monitors - still cannot get better than 1600x1000 resolution.
    Any advise?

Didn't find this answer on a general search, but once I submitted my post, the MORE LIKE THIS bar (right side of screen) showed up and gave me the answer! See below:
Update from Applecare: this problem made its way to engineering and they pointed out a 'hidden' way to fix this with no special 3rd party software:
When you bring up the resolutions for a given display, as its set to 'best for display' hold down the 'option' key while clicking 'scaled'. The scaled menu should now show all the resolutions supported by the monitor. On my Dell it shows 2560x1600 and everything works fine when I select that.
I held down OPTION and re-clicked SCALED; all resolutions came up and I'm now good to go!

  • Why does thunderbolt/mini displayport to active Dual Link DVI apdater not work  on Osx Lion 10.3

Hi I am using a Korean IPS display PCBANK 27 Inch on my Macbook Pro Late 2011 with OSX Lion 10.3
I am currently using a Official Apple Displayport/Thunderbolt -> Dual Link DVI D Adapter.
When I use a windows 7 boot cd it powers up the monitor and it displays. When I use a Linux Live CD it boots the monitor up and displays at full resolution.
When I use Osx Lion 10.3 it does not even detect the display at all which quite odd.
Can anyone help me trouble shoot.
I went to options and screen settings and tried detect display it comes up with nothing :S I am thinking it has to do with APPLES ATI drivers? perhaps? I have a 6750 HD.
    Anyone ?

Above mentioned graphics card can only go as high as 2048 x 1536 where the 27" Cinema Display does 2560x1440 by native. Atlona's AT-DP400 will only pass the given resolution through the display and won't be able to reach to the maximum supported resolution and 1280x720 will become the next available/supported resolution by the monitor. Atlona makes another model of signal converter which also scales to the native resolution (2560x1440), Model#AT-HD620 which will work the best for your setup.

  • Problem w/New MacbookPro, Cinema 30, Mini DisplayPort to Dual-Link DVI Adap

Hi, I have a new MacBook Pro with Miniport connected to a Cinema 30 using the Mini DisplayPort to Dual-Link DVI Adapter. I upgraded from the previous version of the Macbook Pro w/built-in DVI and never had a problem.
From the moment I started using this new miniport adapter with the Cinema 30, I noticed intermittent graphic anomalies. Most of the time, discolored lines will start rapidly popping in and out across the screen - especially noticeable with dark backgrounds. Here are a couple of quick videos that visualize the problem.
    Video 1 - http://is.gd/krM6
    Video 2 - http://is.gd/krLT
I'm also experiencing issues with the cursor randomly jumping across the screen.
It's isolated to the 30 cinema and the adapter. The Macbook Pro works fine when connected tot he new 24" LED Cinema.
Any advice on what to do? Is it a faulty adapter? Is there a SW/Firmware upgrade?
    Thank you!

I'm having the exact same problem. Have you called Apple and if so, what did they say? I read in a magazine that you can switch to the NVIDIA GeForce 9600M GT graphics processor some how with in our computer. I don't know how or if this may solve the problem.

  • Trouble Playing DVDs with Mini DisplayPort To Dual-Link DVI Adapter ?

So I went and bought the Mini DisplayPort To Dual-Link DVI Adapter for my 30" Cinema display to connect to my MacBook Pro.
I open up Apple's DVD player and the screen is blank but I can still hear audio.
If I unplug the display, the movie will display properly. Rebooting with the display plugged in doesn't help either. I also deleted all the DVD players enc setting files so that they would re-initialize but no luck.
Any idea what this problem might be??

You've probably fallen into the nasty pothole created by the advent of HDCP compliant graphics on Apple computers and a mishmash of older and newer Apple gear that does/does not support HDCP.
Ironically, if you were using an older Mac notebook (prior to late 2008), everything would play just fine because HDCP wouldn't come into play anywhere.
That is my guess as to what is happening.

  • MBP + Mini DisplayPort to Dual-Link DVI Adapter + 30" = blue flickering

    Hi everyone,
I was wondering if anyone has found a solution to this problem? I use an Apple 30" Cinema Display and it worked fine with my Late 2007 MBP. Now I got a new Core i7 MBP and the Mini DisplayPort to Dual-Link DVI Adapter. At first all works fine, but after a while of use I get blue (and sometimes also green) flickering pixels in areas that are supposed to be black. This does usually not matter while working, but watching movies for example is completely unbearable.
I’ve read a few threads, but most seem to have different problems like 1/3 of the screen flickering or the external display going completely off for a second. That is no issue over here. It is just that the longer I use my setup the more flickering gets added. At first I thought I don’t suffer from this, because it goes from practically flicker-free to totally weird flickering when everything is in use for more than a few minutes.
I’ve set up the Computer Name screensaver. If I run it right after turning on my MBP all is fine. Running it again after 2-3 minutes of use shows the first blue pixels flickering. It does not need 30 minutes to arrive at what seems like more flickering isn’t possible anymore...
Any recommendations or solutions are really welcome!
    Things I already tried:
    - different USB ports for both the adapter and the Cinema Display
    - other power outlets
    - powering the adapter from a USB hub or via an iPod wall charger
    Thanks
    Björn

    Björn Herrmann wrote:
I would even try out crazy adapter combinations if there were any available...
At last! I’m quoting myself, because I finally found an alternative adapter which works! I have no more flickering pixels/lines. Black looks and stays completely black as it should! I can finally use dark backgrounds again and watching movies with black borders or dark areas is no longer a pain.
The adapter was very hard to get. It currently is not sold here in Germany and I got it off eBay where there was only 1 available. I’m happy, because I got it for less than 90€ which is even a little cheaper than Apple’s flicker-creator.
The adapter I now use is the Sapphire Active DisplayPort-to-(Dual-Link-)DVI adapter. It has a USB connector for power like Apple’s adapter. The only thing that’s added is the DisplayPort-to-Mini-DisplayPort cable since it is not available with Mini-DisplayPort. Here’s a picture of it:
    Hope this helps others, too!

PS: This adapter seems to be normally meant for ATI’s GPUs in order to connect 3 displays which they call Eyefinity.

I just brought the new iMAC 27" iCore7. Previously I was using old MBP with dual link DVI to DELL 3008 and they did fine.
But Today I connect the Dell 3008 to my new iMAC using Mini DisplayPort to Dual-Link DVI Adapter...They could not work properly...
The dell shows images in red with flickers....
I've contacted the phone for help...and they said nothing could be done????!!!!!
    Anyone could help??

    just update my progress...
I had made calls to Apple technical support center in HONG KONG for help...
To my surprise...they even did not understand what I was saying(Or just pretending...)....One interesting guy said I could take the new iMAC back to service center to change the 4850 display card to older version...or call DELL for help!!!!!
Fuxking Apple technical support center in HONG KONG
I was almost hopeless until I found a minidisplay port to display port cable in Circuit Assembly:
    http://estore.circuitassembly.com/products/Mini-Displayport-to-Displayport-Adapt er-Cable.html
    ONLY $14.95 !!
They sent the cable to me in 3 days time...and I hooked it up right away when I received it today...my Dell 3008 could display 2560 x 1600 normally again!!!!!
The problem is: Apple is still selling its FUNCTIONLESS Mini DisplayPort to Dual-Link DVI Adapter at high costing....sounds like cheating others....
What' s wrong with the Apple nowadays???

  • TS3232 I have the mini DisplayPort to Dual-Link DVI Adapter firmware 1.03 and I still have screen flickering issues

I have the mini DisplayPort to Dual-Link DVI Adapter firmware 1.03 and I still have massive screen flickering issues on a Mac Mini 2012.
I am using a Dell 30" monitor (it's the Samsung screen just rebranded) connected to a WD 4TB Thunderbolt drive connected to the Mac Mini.
The screen is usable for the most part when I've just started the computer (although today I started having issues after a fresh restart) but if even just the screen goes to sleep, or the computer goes to sleep and I wake it later, I start to have massive flickering to black and occasionally to snow.
The effect seems to be more likely to arise when I'm on heavy graphics-intensive websites or programs (eg, Tumblr feed with lots of GIF images or working in Adobe Premiere), but once it starts shutting down those programs has no effect, the screen keeps flickering wildly.
The problem improved after the 1.03 firmware upgrade (for a while it was flickering uncontrollably ALL the time and was virtually unusable) but it has not gone away.
Any suggestions would be very welcome, either for how to fix this issue or how to get Apple to, you know, let me TELL THEM that their adapter firmware fix has NOT solved the issue, since my phone support has expired. :/

I have a new Mini DisplayPort to Dual-Link DVI Adapter to allow my original Apple 30" Cinema Display to connect to the new Mac Pro.  Shipped straight from Apple, it is firmware version 1.03.  I've never had flickering issues, but the display will often go black (possibly after a screen power save) and not come back.  when this happens I am still able to connect to and use the Mac via remote connection.  But the only way to get the screen back is either to unplug the adapter and plug it back in to the Mac, or to shut down and power up the Mac.  This may be a separate issue, so I'll also post it standalone...

  • Mini Displayport to Dual-Link DVI Issues on 30" Cinema Display

I know this problem has been around for a while, and that there are several other discussion on it, but my goal here is to point out that even in mid-2011, this issue remains.
    Here's my configuration:
    30" Cinema Display
Dual-link MDP to DVI adapter with 1.03 firmware (purchased August 2011 from an Apple Store)
New-ish MacBook Pro (purchased December 2010) with Mini Displayport
    Symptoms:
On dark areas of the screen, DVI noise appears (horizontal flickers of light coming and going at random)
    Attempted Fixes:
Unplugging the display and plugging it back in to the computer (failed)
    Restarting the computer (failed)
Tightening the connections on the Dual-Link DVI adapter (failed)
Sleeping the display and awaking it (failed)
Some suggest getting a new 27" Cinema Display with native Mini Displayport/Thunderbolt support. I actually have one, but I cannot tolerate the glare on the glossy displays, so I'm "downgrading" to a 30" Cinema Display.
Is there any remaining hope for this issue?

I still cannot understand why you would return everything... Ultimately you want this computer right? Once the bugs on the adapter are fixed are you gonna go back and re-buy it?
Seems like a lot of time spent out of spite and not for good reason. Me, this is the best Mac I've ever owned (and I've owned many. no, really.) and I'm happy to wait for this adapter w/ this machine in stead of going back to my other box.
I observed a similar client of mine w/ an iPhone... after the first week, he didn't like the keyboard and a few other things, so he took it back and went back to using his Blackberry -only to dump the Blackberry again for the iPhone, because he realized that the iPhone still did more things better than the Blackberry.
