Dual Monitor Hook-up, DVI/VGA/HDMI?

I think it's time to retire my aging samsung 22" and buy a few 23" LED's to replace it.
My graphics card only has DVI out (x2), and the 3 monitors I'm looking at do not have dual DVI (either dual HDMI and DVI, or DVI/VGA/HDMI), so I would need adapters from DVI to HDMI/VGA. I'm guessing that's all handled at the adapter/hardware level, so linux should have no problem finding them, but if I'm hooking 1 up natively to DVI, and the other through an adapter (or both through adapters), will I notice any quality difference between the 2 monitors?

Personally I use my HDMI monitor as my main monitor and have the secondary monitor attatched to VGA. I can't really tell the difference in performance between the two, however I never work with anything terribly graphics intensive.
and it hurts to hear that my Samsung 22" is also  'aging'  of course so is my 17" secondary I guess maybe that'll be my next investment...
Sorry about the aging comment
But this is the answer I was looking for! I don't want to have 1 monitor hooked up via HDMI and the other VGA and be able to see a noticeable difference between the 2. I don't do anything graphics intensive either.
Thanks for all the responses!

  • T440 - dual monitors without dock, using VGA and mini DP

Try to find out if a T440 can use its VGA and mini DP ports at the same time for dual monitor support (LCD can be closed.)  Can't seem to find this info anywhere, everything I come up against talks about a dock.
    Thanks.

There are "features" having to do with the amount of power supplied to run the adapters on the 5770 and 5870.
I suggest you use one DVI-to-VGA adapter for your best display. These VGA signals are present on the DVI-I output from the computer -- in the bar at one end and the four pins around it. The adapter used for this is just wires.
The longer story has to do with using much more expensive ACTIVE, Powered adapters, some even use a USB pigtail to pick up power from a USB to run signal drivers inside the adapters. These are Required to run three displays, but you can Usually get away with it for two.

  • Dual Monitor Hook-up

I have a Dual 2.0 Powermac G5 and I was wondering if it is possible to hook-up two of the old style plastic Apple LCD displays?
I have one 17" Apple LCD hooked-up right now with a DVI to ADC connector. How do I hook-up a second?

I believe it has a NVIDIA Ge Force 6800 or a ATI Radeon 9600. On the back of the G5 is two DVI ports. One of them has the DVI to ADC adapter plugged into it, which has my old 17" Apple LCD display hooked-up to it. The other DVI port is empty. Do I have to buy another DVI to ADC adapter to hook-up another old Apple LCD?

  • VGA to DVI to hdmi?  For the new Mac Mini.

I'm dying to buy a new Mac Mini but I'm not ready to replace my monitor yet.  Sadly, it's a VGA flat panel.  It's connected to my current 2009 Mini by a VGA to DVI adapter.  The new Mini comes with a DVI to HDMI adapter.
Can I plug my VGA to DVI adapter into the DVI to HDMI adapter and get video for my monitor?  My monitor has no speakers, so audio is irrelevant.  I just need video.

Unfortunately, my monitor is a VGA only flatpanel.  I had to buy a $30 Thunderbolt to VGA adapter to be able to use it with my new Mini.  Ah well, problem solved.  I'll make sure my next monitor has either DVI or HDMI.
One thing I think Apple should seriously consider doing is STOPPING their practice of including an adapter in the box and, instead, giving a free adapter with purchase.  That way, they won't be wasting resources (this is the second time I've bought a Mac with an adapter I don't need, and I guarantee there are people who will already have a compatile monitor and won't need the adapter either) and instead will better serve their customers by sending them home with a new Mac that works with the monitor they have.
The Mini is all about bring your own peripherals, right?  Well, there are a lot of VGA monitors out there.

  • Best way- p7-1380t dvi to hdmi connections to a monitor HP w2207h

Have 2 DVI outputs from computer - current hookup using DVI to VGA. Want to hook up DVI to HDMI. Are there any advantages? and, best way to do it?
    This question was solved.

    GDicker, welcome to the forum.
Here is an explanation of both connection types:
    DVI to HDMI
DVI is a digital signal in the same format as the video portion of HDMI. The difference is that DVI doesn't carry the audio signal like HDMI does. This means that if you are only using the video signal you can use a simple DVI to HDMI plug adapter that changes the physical connections. If you want to go from a DVI source with audio, you'll need an active converter to combine the video signal from the DVI source and the audio into the HDMI signal.
As you can see, DVI is a digital video signal and HDMII is a digital video and audio connection.  Simply using a DVI to HDMI adapter is only going to give you digital video.  Therefore, the advantage of the DVI to HDMI will be to give you a digital signal.  VGA is an analog connection.

  • DVI to HDMI doesn't work with Panasonic Monitor

    Hi all,
I have a Panasonic monitor, model TH-50PX75U that we've used with my Macbook Pro.  I have an DVI (large style) to HDMI cable that we connect the Macbook with, and it works fine.
I also have a MacPro that I want to use this monitor with. It has 1 full size DVI display port and 2 mini display ports.  In the past I've used the DVI and one mini port to connect 2 monitors at once one the MacPro and it has worked fine.
I tried  connecting the Panasonic monitor to use on my mid 2012 MacPro  but I never get a picture.  I reconnected one of the other monitors to a mini dispplay port and can see that the MacPro recognizes the Panasonic monitor.  Both monitors show up in the Display section under System Preferences.  I've tries various settings for the Panasionic monitor but I can never get anything to display on it.
What am I missing here?  The MacPro is a mid 2012 with 3.2Gig Quad Core / 6 Gig ram / Radion 5770 graphic card, and runs ML 10.8.3.
    Any advise is appreciated.
    Thanks!
    Ray

Ok, so I had time to do some testing and here's what I've done:
I plugged in my Macbook which does work on the Pana monitor, and looked at the Profile.  I then compared it to the Profile on the Mac Pro.  There are some differences which I'm guessing have to do with different HW.  I'm going to include some photos of the working and not working monitor scenarios do you can see what I'm seeing.
Does anyone have any suggestions as to how to make this work?
Photo1: Shows the Macbook and the Pana monitor together using DVI to HDMI cable to connect the two.
Photo2: Shows the display settings with the small monitor and Pana connected to Mac Pro.  Notice there are no numbers in the diplays. Mirroring them doesn't work either.  The small monitor is using a DVI to mini port adapter to connect to the graphics card, the Pana is using an HDMI to DVI cable (same one I used with the Macbook) to connect to the DVI port of the graphics card.
Photo3: Both monitors are on.  The Mac Pro knows the Panasonic is there but I never get a display on it.

  • Dual Monitors with GPU and Motherboard not working

Hey guys, just wondering if anyone else could help me out.
So, I decided to hook up an old monitor of mine to my rig today and, lo and behold, the monitor isn't being detected by my computer.
I've already got a monitor running through my GPU (NVidia GTX 960) via DVI.
Currently tried connecting my second (old) monitor to my motherboard with DVI as well, but it isn't being detected.
I went into my bios and forced my integrated graphics on, but when I checked in the device manager, it said my VGA graphics adapter "Cannot start (Error Code 10)"
Also tried updating VGA graphics adapter drivers, but I had the latest drivers already.
I'm not sure if that's related to the issue, but I thought it'd be worth mentioning.
(What's also worth mentioning is that I'm a complete casual when it comes to computer building and such, lol)
Motherboard is a Gigabyte F2A88XM-HD3, supports VGA, DVI and HDMI.
Monitor that I'm trying to connect supports both DVI and VGA.

A lot of the 960's don't have 2 DVI's. However most have an additional HDMI and DisplayPort. I recommend you get an adapter from amazon or something. Just make sure that it will convert HDMI or DP to DVI. Usually amazon products have a good amount
of questions already answered by buyers.
Interesting that they'd go that route, I guess I just assumed since my 760 has two.
I've set up dual monitors using one DVI and one HDMI before, but I ran into issues with screen sizing. Despite having two identical monitors set at the same resolution the mouse would not transmit over to the second monitor at the same height as it was on
the first, so I had to buy an adapter like Joshua suggested.

  • Big Problems with Dual Monitors

I am running a Mac Pro with the Nvidia graphics card. I did boot camp to intall windows, but later decided to remove the partition adn install parallels. The problem is thaton the mac side when I place a monitor on the second port, all my screens do is flash blue and never show up. I tired reinstalling the os, and this didn't fix it. I have 2 20 in apple cinima screens, but I can't use them both becasue when I plug the second one in both of my screens go away (flashing blue on and off). How can I fix this? it is real problem.

Have you also tried setting up dual display using the windows settings instead of the NV control panel?
Also (and this one is obvious, but worth checking)...if your HDMI display has multiple inputs (DVI, VGA, HDMI, etc.), make sure you have it set to the correct input.
I'm guessing the issue is with the HDMI display.  Is there any way you can try a DP monitor instead of the HDMI monitor?  That could help narrow the problem even further.  Nvidia is very particular about the cable adapters/dongles that they claim support for with their cards.  The one we sell is officially supported (made by Bizlink).

  • Dual Monitor Capability

I was wondering if there was a way to have dual monitors hooked up to a TSeries ThinkPad? I currently have dual monitors and a Lenovo tower and was going to switch to a TSeries Thinkpad w/docking station but I don't want to lose the dual monitors when I am at my desk. Can anyone advise?

Yes it is possible if you use the Advanced Mini-Dock, there are several posts on how to do this.
The easiest way to set it up is to attach one monitor to the
dock's VGA and one to the dock's DVI and create a profile in
    ThinkVantage Presentation Director, (shortcut Fn+F7).
    When
creating your profile and selecting screens there is the option to
select output to DVI and VGA, this is only available if you first
de-select the internal screen. It will also allow you to clone the
    screens or select extended desktop.
When docked the VGA port on the TP is disabled.
Another method would be to use the DualHead2Go solutions from Matrox.
    Hope this helps

  • Msi R7770 power edition 1GD5/OC dual monitor advice

    Hi guys
I'm hoping someone can assist me. I have the msi r7770 graphic card installed on my pc. I would like to set up my first dual monitor display, but I am unsure what cables I need to connect two screens with and which two of the three ports on the graphics card to use.
Can anybody offer me some advice.
    Peter

ok the card has 3 ports! any 2 of the 3 in combination should be perfectly capable of outputting a dual monitor setup!
DVI-I - thats the blue one and has digital and analogue pins
    HDMI - Standard HDMI connector
Display Port - High Bandwidth Display signal output
usually with a card like that the best way to hook up 2 screens is 1 to the DVI-I and one to the HDMI port but if one of your monitors has a display port in on it use a display port cable as that port has much higher signal output bandwidth!
its hard to say what the best way is unless we know what monitors your planning to use?

  • T500 Dual Monitors w/ Laptop Screen

I have a T500 (w/ ATI Radeon Mobility HD 3650) and a ThinkPad Advanced Mini-Dock.  I currently use two external monitors, one out of each of the dock's ports (DVI and VGA).  Is it possible to also utilize the laptop screen for a total of three screens?  If so, how do I set that up.  I can't get more than two to come on at a time.
    Thanks

I have the same thing, but can't get two monitors to work.  I have ATI and have high performance on graphics.   I have 2504 Advanced....  I can't use any dvi + vga or dp.  I also can't use dvi on dock and dp on t500.  i've tried all combinations on dock and t500, but can't find anyway to get two external monitors displays using dvi, vga, or dp.   I would appreciate any help.
I would be happy just to have two screens.  I did disable the internal lcd and when I am in ATI Advance I can right click the two disabled monitors ( the lcd and my second external), but ATI only give me options to add the lcd, I can't get any options to right click on the second external monitor - no matter how it is connected on dock or t500 - dp or vga.
    Thanks for any help.

  • I just bought Mac Book pro; trying to hook up dual monitor with Samsung syncmaster 2033 but no signal; I am using dvi to hdmi converter. Please assist.

I just purchased a Macbook Pro but unable to set up dual display with samsung syncmaster 2033 via DVI to HDMI port.
Thank you in advance for help.

There has been quite a lot of discussion here about driving twin displays with the mini, and more recently about the potential for USB video adapters to facilitate this, particularly in the light of several vendors claiming they have suitable MacOS devices and drivers 'almost ready'.
The DisplayLink solution seems to be the one most suggested as viable, though it's a pity they have not yet been able to move their drivers from beta - I suspect that puts a few people off. It's therefore good to hear of a real-world experience that should help others decide whether or not to go this route!

  • What is the best way to connect my new MBP to monitor - DVI, VGA or HDMI

What is the best way to connect my new MBP to a computer monitor?  DVI, VGA or HDMI?  Thanks

I recommend the Apple MiniDisplay Port to DVI adaptor.  I would avoid VGA.  MiniDisplay Port to HDMI will work as well (3rd party).
