The one connected to the ADC no problme.

My guess is either a bad cable or bad adapter on the second monitor. Try switching the monitors and see if the problem follows the monitor.

  • ATI Radeon 9600 Pro 256MB 8x Dual (DVI/DVI) (AGP) Video Card for PC/Mac

We want to be able to use our 30" cinema display from the G4 and was advised in a previous discussion to buy the ATI Radeon 9600 Pro 256MB 8x Dual (DVI/DVI) (AGP) Video Card for PC/Mac. It doesn't seem to be available anywhere. Does anybody know of an alternate video card that's currently available that will get us there? (We had the display running from a G5 that quit / logic board failure).
    Many thanks,
    Philip

The Nvidia 7800GS is a flashed card, runs a 30" with ease.
BruinMacs on Ebay is a great place to get one, you support the guy who wrote the original ROM for these.
He doesn't seem to have any for sale right now, but if you email him, maybe he will list one.
There are also flashed X800s that work on your MDD and can run a 30". They are pricey but will offer dual DVI while the 7800GS is single DVI with VGA for second display.
There are also flashed 6600GT AGP cards which will work, but harder to find.
Any of the above 3 will run circles around a 9600.

  • ATI Radeon 9600 XT & SyncMaster 305T - problems

Hi everyone - I just purchased a 30" Samsung SyncMaster 305T and have been trying to get it to run properly. I have a Dual 1.8 GHz G5 with the ATI Radeon 9600 XT card. The largest resolution it's allowing me to set on the monitor preferences window is 1280x800 (ideally i'd like the option for 2560 x 1600). Anyone know if there's any incompatibility issues with this monitor/graphics card combo? Please help.... otherwise, i'll have to either return the monitor or buy a new graphics card. Soooooo bummed. =[ Thank you in advance!

    Welcome to the forums, Rabidart!
First off, you're probably better off starting a new topic for your question, since this one is marked as "answered" and many folks won't see your new question at the bottom.
    But since I'm already here...
Secondly, I notice that you're running Leopard. I'd recommend staying away from the ATI cards if you're powering a 30" on a G5. For an explanation, check out this thread:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1195747&start=0&tstart=0
You have two options: deal with the inherent ATI issues until Apple or ATI/AMD address them, or get a compatible nVidia GEForce AGP card with Dual-Link DVI. There are many on eBay, and a few users in the thread listed above have installed them with a 100% success rate (so far).
By the way, a replacement card, once you find one, is VERY easy to install. Retail packages will include instructions, and many of the sellers on eBay include instructions with theirs.
    Good luck!

  • ATI Radeon 9600 graphics card not performing well-fix or upgrade?

In my PPC Dual G5 I have the ATI Radeon 9600 XT. In trying to use Keynote's QuickTime export I encountered severe lag problems. part of this is how Keynote handles the QT export, and part is due to the Radeon (I've been through lots of technical troubleshooting on the Keynote Apple forum on this.) The current recommendation is to use Snapz Pro to do a screencast of the presentation. I ran into out-of-sync issues with this file, and sent a test off to Ambrosia (makes of Snapz Pro). He reported that it was my video card, and that it output fine on a current MB Pro.
I have checked the ATI/AMD website and called their TS. They consider the G5 installed card to be OEM, and there is no driver update for it. There isn't one on the Apple site either. Is there an easy SW test to see if the Radeon has had some sort of performance degradation issue? The Ambrosia tech said I should be getting better performance with it.
Any insight to this? If I do have to upgrade the card, what is the best current match for the G5?

  • Does the PowerColor Radeon 9600 work in a Mac aswell?

    Hello,
i'm searching a new agp graphics card for my powermac G4 "Gigabit Ethernet".
I came across the ATI Radeon 9600 Pro which according to the manufacturer ATI works in both Apples and Win PCs (http://snipurl.com/17k11). Unfortunately, i cannot find that card for sale in german online stores. Some sell the PowerColor 9600 Pro (http://snipurl.com/17k0z), and i wonder if it is possible to run this card in a Mac, too....
    Any suggestions?
And if not - does anyone know a PCI or AGP card with at least 64 MB RAM for that i might use to replace the built in ATI rage 128 Pro of my G4?
    thanks in advance,
    Tobias

    Hi,
Most any Mac ATI Radeon video card over 32MB VRAM will mirror and have Quartz Extreme, Nvidia 2MX and GF3 also. But I'd stick with ATI brand, they work nice in older Mac's.
The other reason that a ATI 9600 won't work in your Sawtooth is because it's a 4X/8X AGP card, your Sawtooth is 2X AGP - it won't fit.
Because you have a Sawtooth you must find a video card that is DVI/VGA, the Sawtooth does not support Apple's ADC video connection. Look around, ATI 7000/7200/7500/8500 can be found with the DVI/VGA connectors, with 32MB/64MB VRAM.
Core Image is a newer technology and available in newer video cards only. The Mac 9800 is the only one that has it. Certain 'flashed' PC video cards also have it, Nvidia 5200's, for example.
Make sure you get a 2X/4X AGP video card and make sure it has two video out connectors.
Or, just but a cheap PCI video card, like an ATI 7000 PCI, it in one of your PCI slots, connect the other monitor on it. Two monitors, two video cards.

  • ATI Radeon X800 XT or ATI Radeon 9600 Pro Mac Edition for 30" display

I currently have the ATI Radeon 9600 Pro installed in my G5 2.0 DP and it is running my 30" display, but I am having some isssues when I play DVD's the pictures seems to skip every few seconds like it isn't playing fast enough, or it hesitates. I bought the ATI Radeon X800 XT and wanted to know if that would be a better card before I switch it out.

The X800 is a faster card but DVD playback doesn't put much load on the card, so the X800 probably won't help. If it skipping on more than one DVD, the DVD drive is probably having problems. Cleaning the lens ay help.

  • PPC G5 with ATI Radeon 9600 Pro monitors not getting signal

    hi there.
I have a PPC G5 with ATI Radeon 9600 Pro graphics card and I cannot get a monitor to work properly. I am trying an old Apple Studio Display (circa 2001) and a Viewsonic VA520.
It seems like the Apple display should work, but all I get is a black screen. I ran it through a DVI to ADC adapter and had it working for a short period of time, but for some unknown reason it went back to the black screen.
The Viewsonic gives a 'NO SIGNAL' screen and not much else.
Both of these monitors have worked on other G5's. I am guessing this is a graphics card issue.
I appreciate any kind or helpful words! Thank you.

I'm having a similar problem with the G5 not recognizing a VGA monitor on either video out. I have no problem using two monitors with the DVI inputs but I need to use a VGA video splitter for a third screen. It worked at the beginning of this week, and now it refuses any VGA out, even without the splitter, just going into directly into the VGA in of one of my working monitors via a DVI-VGA adapter(i've tried different ones). I read another post about trashing "displays" and "windowserver" preference files but i haven't yet tried that..any clues??

  • Max TV (lcd or plasma) for Dual PowerMac G5 - ATI Radeon 9600 XT

    Hi,
Wanted to pose a question as to what the maximum size TV (lcd/plasma) would be if I wanted to use a PowerMac 2x2.0Ghz ATI Radeon 9600 XT video card.
I want it to be the primary display and use it for video conferencing only.
    Thanks,
    Nikesh

The problems are with the TVs, not the card. Some TV makers only test their DVI/HDMI inputs with video equipment, such as cable boxes, DVD players, and HD video cameras. These all use just a few resolutions (720p, 1080i, 1080p). They are sending video, and clipping of the edges is not a major problem, although there is no good reason to do it with digital video. These devices send out their digital video at their built-in resolution, and don't have to get any resolution information from the display. A computer graphics board can generate many different resolution and relies on the display telling the board which resolutions will work. Some TVs don't send back the correct information, so you may need special software to force the graphics board to a resolution that it doesn't think is supported by the display. Overscan is also done by some TVs. Some, but definitely not all, graphics boards can be set to underscan to get all the desktop on the display, but the pixels may not match exactly, causing some blurring. It is a lot better if a 1920 x 1080 TV will just display the computers 1920 x 1080 on a pixel-to-pixel basis. Some Sony and Westinghouse 1080p sets work properly, some Samsung 1080p don't, but there is no way to tell unless you try it, or can find a pixel-to-pixel mode in the TV manual. Look for sets that support 1080p, not just 1080i.

  • Help : Will ATI Radeon 9600 Pro run a 30" Cinema Display ? ? ?

just a simple question as the subject suggests /
    i have a 1st generate Power Mac G5 Dual 2GHZ / with Radeon 9600 Pro
graphics card . i would simply like to know if it will plug an play nicely
with a 30 inch monitor - be it the Apple Cinema Display or Dell -
anyone have any definitive answers / my thanks in advance
    best,
    lex

You need a different graphics board with dual-link DVI to run the 30" at full resolution. The AGP cards Apple sold that have dual-link DVI ports are:
ATI Radeon 9650 XT (one single-link, one dual-link DVI)
NVIDIA GeForce 6800 GT DDL (two dual-link DVI)
NVIDIA GeForce 6800 Ultra DDL (two dual-link DVI)
Apple doesn't sell these as retail items, but might sell them as replacement parts, or you could look for them used. Be sure to get Mac versions.
There are two new graphics boards that will work:
ATI Radeon® X800 XT MAC Edition RoHS 256MB AGP (one ADC, one dual-link DVI)

  • 20" ACD, ATI Radeon 9600, and Me

    hello all!
Just a quick question. I'm (semi) technically proficient and am pretty good with hardware, but still uneasy with Apple stuff.
I have a ATI Radeon 9600 I believe (It's somewhere around there; whatever came stock with the unit)and I'm going to purchase a 20" ACD in a couple of weeks and have a question:
Now I know that the card is a massive 64 MB! (lol) and I've never upgraded cause never really had a reason. I am aware of splitting your vram over 2 displays can hinder the display causing ghosting and graininess and wondered what you guys thought about purchasing another card to run this display. I have to hold onto my ATI because of the ADC connector, and dropping 99 bucks for a converter is not a wise decision for me quite yet. Now I've been made aware of running multiple cards on a unit. It can't be as simple as popping in another card and taking it from there would it?!? The OS would go nucking futs figuring out what card to use and such I would assume.
    So, after all that rigamarole:
CAN I run 2 cards on my MDD dual G4?
    If so, how?
also, SHOULD I run a second card if I can (you guys with this setup can help me tons!)
if so, what card would you guys recommend. I'm looking around the 128 MB variety. I don't want to break the bank, getting an 800 dollar display, then a 300 dollar card.
edit: also, the max rez on the 17" studio is 1280 x 1024 and the 20" ACD 1680 x 1050. That shouldn't be a problem should it? I mean, it's only REALLY adding pixels length wise, and only 26 more height so the 20" won't be knocked down in rez to make up for this right?
(forgive my ignorance, though I've used the dual-display setup, I've never owned one. and to be fair, that one had the same size monitors on both)
So, guys (and gals) help me out here!

    Mr Mayhem,
if I understand you correctly, you want to use the (older/ADC connection) 17" apple display together with the (newer/DVI connection) 20" apple display together on your MDD Dual 1 G.
My first advice would be to get two displays of the same kind. You will love that (equal screen resolutions just feel better somehow) ... get a 2nd hand 17" or, even better, ditch the 17" and get two 20".
In case you rather stick to your original plan - just get the ATi Radeon 9200 Mac Edition and put it in one of the PCI slots of your MDD. It will feed the 20" via DVI conncetor and it'll cost you roughly around 100.- and the 128 MB onboard RAM will be ok for standard use; maybe just not for betatesting Quake VII Arena. Probably the best bang for buck in your situation. Lood Guck !

  • ATI Radeon 9600 Mac & PC Edition will not work with leopard

When I installed a new ATI Radeon 9600 Mac & PC Edition, 256MB; my Dual 2 GHz G5 (June 2004) will not allow me to drive my Apple Cinema Display while running under leopard, (neither 10.5.1 or 10.5.2 with Leopard Graphics Update).
The mac starts up as usual and gets to the white screen with Apple logo -then the progress ring eventually stalls. The mouse pointer becomes visible and can be moved freely around this screen.
I can connect from other macs on the network and navigate files, but screen sharing results in an all black window.
The Radeon 9600 works fine if I start up the mac with the Tiger installation disk.
I have tried every suggestion that I could find on these boards and elsewhere: zapped the pram, reset the SMU, installed older ATI Drivers, etc...
Of course the G5 is far out of warranty. I've been running Leopard since the day it shipped - so that's out of warranty now, and there is little help to be found on the ATI/AMD website. I'm afraid I'll have to return the card before Apple releases another graphics update.
The stock graphics card that came with this mac is the nVIDIA 64MB GeForce FX 5200 - but it's having trouble keeping up with Leopard's demands - my isight barely works, most special effects in iChat and PhotoBooth are unusable, and of course I'm not given the option to use a transparent menu bar,
I am really good at swapping video cards in the G5 now - but I'm so frustrated.
Does anyone else have any suggestions?
    thanks

  • ATI Radeon 9600 Pro fuzziness

    Hi,
I have a G5 tower with ATI Radeon 9600 Pro running two fujitsu LCDs, both at 1680x1050, 60 hz. Today, they're both incredibly fuzzy - bordering on unusable. They remain this way if I step down to lower res.
This is only on my login. My wife's login = crisp and clear. Likewise the login screen. Have tried resetting the PRAM, no change.
One thing I do notice today is that the very far right edge of the menu bar is bleeding over into the right screen, which I don't recall it used to do.
Also, the display is shifting about on the horizontal axis, like it's trying to find a better line sync or something (to use an old CRT metaphor)
    Any help much appreciated, Robbie

    Hi,
I've got a Radeon 9600 pro and just purchased a new 30" display. However, I can't seem to get it running at 2560 x 1600 - does this card support this resolution?

You will need a graphics card with dual-link DVI.

  • How good or bad is the ATI Radeon HD 5770 for Photoshopping?

I'm on the verge of upgrading machines for the first time in half a decade. My Opteron 180 is kinda obsolete and, well, falling apart.
I was leaning towards a Dell Studio XPS 9000. More specifically, an Intel Core i7 920 /w 12GB ram.
During the holidays, these machines came with a choice of nvidia or ATI card. For whatever reason, most of the nvidia options -- the 260 in particular -- have been removed from the build customizing options. In fact, with regards to this one deal I'm looking at this week, the only choice is the ATI Radeon HD 5770.
    Here's the link : http://www2.dell.com/ca/en/home/desktops/desktop-studio-xps-9000/pd.aspx?refid=desktop-stu dio-xps-9000&s=dhs&cs=cadhs1&~oid=ca~en~70702~studio-xps-9000-en-feat_3~~
Now considering what a great deal that is, and that I won't be gaming with this machine (so I don't much care about 3D performance), is there any reason why I *shouldn't* get this machine?
I keep hearing about nvidia / CUDA benefits. Are they really worth my passing up on this deal? Because other than the card being an ATI, this machine pretty much suits my Photoshopping / DAW (music) editing needs.
Am I making too much of an issue about the video card, considering we're talking about 2D performance here? One benefit I keep hearing about the 5770 over the nvidia GT260 is that the 5770 requires less power and is more silent.
    Opinions?
(PS: Before recommending I pass on this and order from X or Y or Z, please keep in mind I'm in Canada. The choices are different here, and the price you see at that link is CND.)

I am about in the same spot as you, trying to decide what machine to upgrade my woefully inadequate machine too.  I was considering a XPS 9000 however I have about talked myself into building one because I can get a much better motherboard with all sorts of eSATA3, USB3, dual-network-connection teaming and whatever else if I do that; however, it takes a bit of research to get things right and I am at the beginning of that process, so I may give up and fall back and go the Dell route after all.
If go with Dell, you can get memory for a bit cheaper than Dell will sell it to you so maxing it out at Dell may not be the most cost effective solution.  I mean it might be cheaper to go with the minimum RAM and then sell or trash it and buy your own 2GB chips.  Unfortunately Dell does not have a no-video-card option, but the HD 5770 is good card.
As far as ATI vs nVidia, ATI is the only one with DirectX 11 at the moment, which includes automatic tessellation for textures that have a displacement map.  I doubt Photoshop will care about that although new games will.
Here is the "Heaven" benchmark running on a $700 HD 5970 dual-GPU card, but the tessellation works on the newest cheaper ($150) ATI cards too.  The difference is most noticeable on the walls roof and stone pathways:

Unfortunately Adobe has not given us guidance on what CS5 might need or can use as far as GPU support.
