Dual network (n/g) config problems

Hi folks,
I have been running my home network off a (previous gen) Airport Express. I have a new MacBook (n-compatible) and a 12" PowerBook (g-compatible). The interference in my neighborhood on the 2.4 ghz band is dreadful - lots of dropouts, inability to connect, etc. So I got a brand-spankin'-new Time Capsule.
I want to set up my network this way: the modem connects to the Time Capsule, running on the 5 ghz band (for the MacBook), and the Airport Express connects to the Time Capsule through ethernet, broadcasting its own 2.4 ghz b/g network (for the PowerBook). Apparently this can be done in reverse, but it doesn't seem to be an option for the Airport Express. In Airport Utility (5.3.1), there is no option to extend a network through ethernet for the Airport Express.
Any thoughts? Your help is much appreciated!

The extending network feature is only for connecting the 2 wirelessly.
When you connect the 2 via Ethernet, you simply configure the AirPort Express (AX) to create a wireless network. You also configure the AX to act as a bridge (not sharing a single IP address).

  • Dual networks, express and extreme problem with Intel iMac accessing both

    I have two airport networks setup to two different ISP's. One is setup using two Airport Expresses with a printer hung off one. The other is setup with an Airport Extreme with two USB disks.
    I have a G4 iBook 14" laptop and a MacPro 17" Intel laptop that see and can bee switched between both networks utilizing Internet Connect. They are running OS X 10.4.11.
    The other system is an Intel iMac 20" (late 2006) running OS X 10.5.1. The only wireless network it sees is the Airport Extreme. This is frustrating because I want to be able to switch to the Express network to print and cannot get the iMac to recognize the network. Before upgrading to 10.5.1, I could, on occasion, see the other network, now I can not.
    Has anyone experienced this and is there a way to fix it? I believe it is operating in 802.11n, but have no way to verify this.

    I miss posted this in windows. I reposted this in the Airport Extreme.

  • Dual network problem - trouble seeing B/G network in farthest location

    My iPhone and MacBook Pro cannot see the B/G network in the room farthest from the main base station, even though there is an AEX in the room set up to provide internet and Airtunes.
    My set up is:
    N network - 2 AEBSn base stations
    B/G network - 1 AEBS (connected by ethernet to the main AEBSn) and 3 AEX's
    I tried to follow the directions for setting up a dual network and think I have done it correctly. But even though I receive a strong N-network signal in the farthest room, I cannot see the B/G network at all, it just seems to disappear.
    Any help would be most appreciated.

    Thanks HPM2.
    I guess third times a charm. The hard reset of the AEBS finally worked and Airport Utility recognized it and I set it up to join my existing network as a WDS remote.
    It works well, but every time I try to access the newly added AEBS b/g via Airport Utility, I get asked for my keychain access and then for the AEBS b/g password. I established the AEBS password during the Airport Utility setup, but now it is not recognized and is not even in my Keychain Access Utility. I selected the "remember keychain" checkbox during the set up too.
    Any ideas on this keychain issue?
    Thanks again,
    Mr. Hand

  • Lackluster Dual Network Setup - HELP!

    Here's my setup:
    DSL
    I
    I
    AXBS (UFO) 2.4Ghz b/g --> PowerBook G4 (10.4.11); iPhone (Original)
    I
    I
    Time Capsule 5Ghz n (Bridged) --> MacBook Pro (10.5.4); MacBook (10.4.11 - n enabled)
    The Time Capsule's Strength and Range is suppose to far exceed that of the older Base Station. When I'm near the location of the two transmitters the 5Ghz n is barely twice as fast as the 2.4Ghz b/g (tested with large file transfers between the 2 newer laptops, and then file transfers between the MacBook Pro and the older Powerbook). When I'm farther away the 5Ghz n drops away and the 2.4Ghz b/g remains relatively strong. Switching between the two networks when I'm at a distance strangely still shows full solid bars for both networks.
    So does anyone have any suggestions or further question that might help me improve the speed and range of the newer Time Capsule? Thanks

    Just to update everyone:
    Today I moved my whole dual network setup to a more centrally located spot in the house. This has definitely improved the coverage of the 2 network bands (n & b/g).
    Additionally, since I only recently acquired the TC, I originally just added ("bridged") it off of my existing b/g network. With todays move, I decided to switch the 2 base stations and have the TC and its' "n" network the first connection off of the DSL router. Then reconfigured the older ABS Extreme (UFO) to "bridge" off the the TC. While I am convinced that I did not originally have the 2 networks co-mingled (as early speed tests confirmed), I seem to be experiencing improved internet speeds in the 5Ghz ("n") network. Could this be due to no longer "bridging" the TC through the older ABS Extremes' internal Ethernet switch?
    As per Tesserax suggestion, I then did a Signal-to-Noise ration (SNR) survey of the house, and came up with some good results based on the SNR Guidelines in Tesserax comments above.
    35 to 45 SNR throughout most of the house. About 25 SNR just outside in the patio where I was barely getting a connection before. Things have definitely improved. And I am very pleased. Clearly network speed is the advantage of 802.11n technology.
    Nevertheless, my original observation still seems to apply. Here's why: Detached from the house is the garage and an office. As I moved out toward the office during the SNR survey (about 50 ft. away), the strength of the 5Ghz ("n") network dramatically dropped off, and was eventually non-existent inside the office. Yet I could switch over to the 2.4Ghz ("b/g") network and easily browse the internet.
    Apple's marketing claims "AirPort Extreme delivers data transfer speeds up to five times those of previous-generation 802.11g wireless networks — while achieving up to twice the range."
    Now I fully accept, as Apples' footnote states, "Based on a comparison with Apple's 802.11g products. Comparison assumes AirPort Extreme network with 802.11n-enabled computer. Speed and range will be less if an 802.11a/b/g product joins the network. Accessing the wireless network requires an AirPort- or AirPort Extreme-enabled computer or other Wi-Fi Certified 802.11a/b/g-enabled computer. Actual performance will vary based on range, connection rate, site conditions, size of network, and other factors. Range will vary with site conditions." If "site conditions" are limiting the range of the 5Ghz band, why aren't those same site conditions limiting the 2.4Ghz band as well. While I don't realistically expect a full doubling of range between the 2 bands, couldn't I expect SOME? Otherwise the marketing claims are meaningless.
    Can the disparity be explained by Tesserax' observation above, "we know the stricter the wireless security employed, the more overhead is "eating away" the overall bandwidth so we would expect poorer performance when using WPA2 vs. WEP." Now the TC only has WPA2 security available. Are we to assume that Apple's range claims do not apply to the TC then? If I switch my older ABS Extreme (UFO) from WEP to WPA2 will the result match Apple's marketing claims? I'd rather not chop off my good right leg just so it will match my missing left leg. Perhaps my expectations for 802.11n technology were a little too high. Don't get me wrong. I'm very happy with the results. And I am thankful for Tesserax advise. I also appreciate the fact that I am not (yet) experiencing the difficulties that others here are having with the Time Capsule.
    Ultimately, I assume that picking up an Airport Express "n" will extend the 5Ghz network into the office. Is this correct? If anyone has observations on this or my thoughts above, feel free to share them with the rest of us.

  • HT3728 I have factory reset and firmware updated my airport extreme, but although it should have dual network capacity, I can now only create a single network.. Suggestions please

    I have factory reset the extreme base station and updated firmware, however, now there do not appear to be dual networks. Why is that

    Then you may be possibly referring to the Guest Network option?.....which would not be enabled by default when you reset the device back to default settings.
    You can use AirPort Utility to enable that function.

  • Audio Config" problem after upgrading to 7.6

    I have only had my ipod one week. It is working beautifully. My problem is that I can no longer charge it or add songs to it because I can not open itunes. The previous version worked beautifully on my computer. After I upgraded to 7.6, it stopped working and I get an Audio Config. problem everytime I try to open it. I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling the program but it does not help. What do I need to do to fix this problem?

    I have had my ipod a few weeks - but have nothing but problems letting itunes run the syncing, sometime it works and sometimes it does not. I had to reset my ipod 2 times already just to keep song on here, should have gone with Zune or Sonys (what my wife has) they are not having a single issue...

  • Dual Network ports cRIO-9081

    Hello,
    I am using the cRIO-9081 in an industrial application where we connect a cellular modem into one network port and connect the other port to the client's process control network.
    A security concern has been raised if whether there is the possiblity we could bridge the two network ports and gain access to the clients process control network.
    Is there any literature describing the architecture of the dual network methodology in a cRIO-9081 that will put the clients security concerns to rest? From my understanding, one would have to "hack" into the operating system of the controller to be able to bridge the two ports.
    Cheers,
    Conrad

    I trust you have both adapters on separate subnets.  If so, I also trust the control network already is entirely local.  If not, there's already an entry point or intrusion.
    Assuming both are true, why would you need cRIO specific documetation?  You're asking a networking question, not a hardware based question.  You can't reach the local network directly.  You'd need to reach it through an accessible network, regardless of device type.  There's really only one thing connecting that cellular network to the local network: the software.  Do you believe you're vulnerable there?

  • Dual network card

    Hello,
    I have a SAP server with a dual network card. I want to use one for SAP for accessing the network and the other one for iSCSI for provisioning more disk space. Is there no way to do this without affecting SAP's performance? If so, this should be considered a major bug...

    Hi
    Unfortunatelly there is no date so far. This is described in SAP Note 1135705.

  • Re: Want to add TC to wireless network but need dual network setup

    Currently, have an older AEBS (b/g) connected to my modem. My G5 is connected to it via an ethernet cable. My Intel iMac is connected wirelessly to the AEBS via an older (b/g) AX which amplifies my signal and is also connected to a stereo system). I have a 1 TB TC and would like to set up a dual network so that I can capitalize on the faster N speeds offered by the TC and backup both computers.
    Modem -> TC -> AEBS -> G5 (by ethernet cable): the b/g network
    TC ->Intel iMac (wireless): the n network.
    Will the older (b/g) AX work with iTunes on both computers? Which network should it be a part of?
    And how does this dual network configuration work for backing up both computers? Anyone have something similar? Will Airport Utility do this or do I need to do it manually?

    Thanks for pointing out that my AEBS needs to be in Bridge mode and for clarifying that AirTunes will work on either network.
    Any experience with using TC as a backup on a dual network?
    I wonder how many out there have taken advantage of third party apps that given one more options for backing up less frequently than TC does?
    Thanks again for posting.

  • Samba config problem

    Below is the smb.conf file (imported from a tutorial in ubuntu forums) which is the only one that works for me partially. I am able to view my windows (XP) shared folders in the KDE dolphin manager in Networks ..However I am not able to mount the share ..I get the error "Could not resove address for host VIKRAM : Unknown error" where VIKRAM is the XP computer's name.
    From the other perspective , If I share a Linux folder and try to search in Windows network neighbourhood , I am not able to view any folder in the linux box..If I give the IP address to map the drive , it gives the error "could not find //192.168.1.2"
    I have tried changing DHCP to static in host , but still it doesnt resolve the issue.. I have also tried utils like SMB4K , XSMBROWSER and SWAT ..I cannot figure how to get the 2 computers to talk to each other..
    I have followed the ArchWiki to the letter, but stilll the same problem.(in fact I have a dual boot of Arch and Ubuntu because these are the most popular in terms of package availability as If anything is not available in either , it is not available anywhere in Linux world)
    Also , many times , I am being asked for a username and password in which nothing seems to work! i have added a user to samba and If I give that , its not going thru!

    I think I may be getting closer to the issue.. I am told that this error is becoz the name is not getting converted to IP and that giving IP address instead would solve the issue..This was told by my office network admin , but we have only NT server...So I do not understand how this would apply with Linux.
    I dont remember If I ever did anything with the file /etc/hosts where I think you have to define the name and the IP... At the time of Arch install , I was a bit casual and didnt bother abt this part as at that time , there werent any necessity for a network

  • [Solved] Network : static IP config

    AKA Not Another Static IP Problem
    Hi guys,
    I'm trying to setup my network and guess what... it doesn't work
    Well, i mean my Arch laptop won't.
    The problem : i can't browse websites with the browser
    Here are the configs :
    /etc/rc.conf :
    HOSTNAME="ArchX"
    eth0="eth0 192.168.1.3 netmask 255.255.255.0 broadcast 192.168.1.255"
    INTERFACES=(eth0)
    gateway="default gw 192.168.1.1"
    ROUTES=(gateway)
    /etc/hosts
    127.0.0.1 localhost.localdomain localhost ArchX
    /etc/resolv.conf
    nameserver 212.71.8.10
    nameserver 212.71.0.33
    * It works well when using dhcp instead of statip IP
    * i can ping and access the router
    * i can ping www.google.com
    My guess :
    In the wiki, there is this line in the /etc/resolv.conf file :
    search example.com

    Well... you know what ?
    Posting to these forums has some kind of magical effect
    I mean almost every time, i get the thing like 10-20 minutes after i hit "post".
    And don't think i don't take the time to search answers and try several things, in this case i've been trying & searching for like 2 hours.
    Now, i might be dumb... who knows...
    Anyway, to give this post even the tiniest interest, i'll put the solution :
    in /etc/resolv.conf
    nameserver xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx
    nameserver xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx
    search localdomain #added this line
    At least that did the trick for me...
    Alright guys have a good day/night, i for myself am going back to pr0n surfing
    ps: i double-post so that this thread doesn't stay unanswered.
