Dual network switching

I have a multi-network adapter workstation. Lets say its a ethernet and a wifi. The ethernet is somewhat restrictive, blocking alot of blogs and other resources, and is behind a proxy server that f*** things up for some indie-apps that i use (such as genymotion), but it is ultra-fast. The wifi in another hand is open and not behind a proxy, but is slow... dead-slow... 75kbps max speed slow...
Everyday I have to keep removing the ethernet cable so the wifi takes over... I want a better, more cooperative solution... What I'm looking for is a configuration that gives me something like "Try first using the ethernet connection, if that fails, try using the wifi"! a even better solution would be MPTCP, but that is a long shot... So any ideas on how to do this?

Hi Index.xp,
Given your description of the issue, you may want to consider creating different Network Locations for each interface, which can be switched between from the Apple menu. At minimum, this would prevent you from having to manually pull the Ethernet cable. Another option would be to make sure the port priority is set so that Airport is above Ethernet, then leave Airport turned off unless you need it as described. You may find the following articles helpful:

  • Lackluster Dual Network Setup - HELP!

    Here's my setup:
    DSL
    I
    I
    AXBS (UFO) 2.4Ghz b/g --> PowerBook G4 (10.4.11); iPhone (Original)
    I
    I
    Time Capsule 5Ghz n (Bridged) --> MacBook Pro (10.5.4); MacBook (10.4.11 - n enabled)
The Time Capsule's Strength and Range is suppose to far exceed that of the older Base Station. When I'm near the location of the two transmitters the 5Ghz n is barely twice as fast as the 2.4Ghz b/g (tested with large file transfers between the 2 newer laptops, and then file transfers between the MacBook Pro and the older Powerbook). When I'm farther away the 5Ghz n drops away and the 2.4Ghz b/g remains relatively strong. Switching between the two networks when I'm at a distance strangely still shows full solid bars for both networks.
So does anyone have any suggestions or further question that might help me improve the speed and range of the newer Time Capsule? Thanks

    Just to update everyone:
Today I moved my whole dual network setup to a more centrally located spot in the house. This has definitely improved the coverage of the 2 network bands (n & b/g).
Additionally, since I only recently acquired the TC, I originally just added ("bridged") it off of my existing b/g network. With todays move, I decided to switch the 2 base stations and have the TC and its' "n" network the first connection off of the DSL router. Then reconfigured the older ABS Extreme (UFO) to "bridge" off the the TC. While I am convinced that I did not originally have the 2 networks co-mingled (as early speed tests confirmed), I seem to be experiencing improved internet speeds in the 5Ghz ("n") network. Could this be due to no longer "bridging" the TC through the older ABS Extremes' internal Ethernet switch?
As per Tesserax suggestion, I then did a Signal-to-Noise ration (SNR) survey of the house, and came up with some good results based on the SNR Guidelines in Tesserax comments above.
35 to 45 SNR throughout most of the house. About 25 SNR just outside in the patio where I was barely getting a connection before. Things have definitely improved. And I am very pleased. Clearly network speed is the advantage of 802.11n technology.
Nevertheless, my original observation still seems to apply. Here's why: Detached from the house is the garage and an office. As I moved out toward the office during the SNR survey (about 50 ft. away), the strength of the 5Ghz ("n") network dramatically dropped off, and was eventually non-existent inside the office. Yet I could switch over to the 2.4Ghz ("b/g") network and easily browse the internet.
Apple's marketing claims "AirPort Extreme delivers data transfer speeds up to five times those of previous-generation 802.11g wireless networks — while achieving up to twice the range."
Now I fully accept, as Apples' footnote states, "Based on a comparison with Apple's 802.11g products. Comparison assumes AirPort Extreme network with 802.11n-enabled computer. Speed and range will be less if an 802.11a/b/g product joins the network. Accessing the wireless network requires an AirPort- or AirPort Extreme-enabled computer or other Wi-Fi Certified 802.11a/b/g-enabled computer. Actual performance will vary based on range, connection rate, site conditions, size of network, and other factors. Range will vary with site conditions." If "site conditions" are limiting the range of the 5Ghz band, why aren't those same site conditions limiting the 2.4Ghz band as well. While I don't realistically expect a full doubling of range between the 2 bands, couldn't I expect SOME? Otherwise the marketing claims are meaningless.
Can the disparity be explained by Tesserax' observation above, "we know the stricter the wireless security employed, the more overhead is "eating away" the overall bandwidth so we would expect poorer performance when using WPA2 vs. WEP." Now the TC only has WPA2 security available. Are we to assume that Apple's range claims do not apply to the TC then? If I switch my older ABS Extreme (UFO) from WEP to WPA2 will the result match Apple's marketing claims? I'd rather not chop off my good right leg just so it will match my missing left leg. Perhaps my expectations for 802.11n technology were a little too high. Don't get me wrong. I'm very happy with the results. And I am thankful for Tesserax advise. I also appreciate the fact that I am not (yet) experiencing the difficulties that others here are having with the Time Capsule.
Ultimately, I assume that picking up an Airport Express "n" will extend the 5Ghz network into the office. Is this correct? If anyone has observations on this or my thoughts above, feel free to share them with the rest of us.

  • Need help setting up WiFi - Xfinity with Network Switch, Time Capsule, Airport Express and Apple TV

Hello - I recently got Comcast Xfinity service.  We had switched from a different service.  Our wifi service was never great, but prior to Xfinity, it worked decently.  But now that we have Xfinity, our wifi is much worse and very unreliable.  I am seeking advice on how to setup my various Apple wifi devices in my home.   I have attached a diagram that illustrates what I am dealing with.  We have a large old house with stone walls.  Comcast does not support this issue.
To explain the attached diagram, we have a total of 4 levels in our house - an unfinished basement, 1st floor, 2nd floor, and 3rd floor.  The Xfinity router is in the basement and it is connected to a NetGear 10/100 network switch.  I already have ethernet cables running from the network switch in the basement to various locations throughout the house.  So I have ethernet connected to my time capsule and ethernet connected to each of my 3 Airport express devices.  The dark lines running from the network switch to the various devices represents ethernet cable.
The immediate problem that we are having is that we are unable to connect to our wifi networks.  The networks show on my mac laptop and my iPhone, for example, but I am unable to connect.  I know that I am inputting the correct password, but most of the time, we cannot get in.  Sometimes we can..... Very frustrating!  Also, due to the fact that I setup what I have over several years, I have multiple network names.  I once tried to fix that issue, but was unable to tackle it due to my lack of understanding.
Here is what I am looking to accomplish:
    1. Seamless wifi access throughout our house.
    2. One name for our wifi network.  Right now we have multiple names for multiple networks.  Just want to simplify and have only one network.  (I guess that an additional "guest network" would be ok, but not absolutely necessary.
Also, if you think I should disable the Xfinity wifi, and just rely on my mac wifi devices, I am perfectly fine with this.  Just tell me how to do so.
I have no idea how where to start or how to set this up.  I imagine that I would need to disconnect everything and reset and start from scratch?  Can someone tell me what I should do?  Even general advice would be helpful, but the more specific, the better, given my limited understanding.  Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks in advance!

  • Can I use the Time Capsule as a backup drive and wired network switch? I do not want to use the wireless part as I already have an ADSL 2  Wireless Router for that. Thanks.

    Hi
I just went from PC to MAC. Have a MAC Mini and wanted to get a time capsule for backups. I would like to use it as a wired device instead of wireless. Would me connecting it to my router do the trick? Can I then use the LAN ports in the back of the capsule like I would a network switch? Can I just disable the wireless router part of the capsule as I already have an ADSL2+ Wireless Router.
    Thanks

I wanted to run a cable upstairs from the switch downstairs so the Time capsule becomes my upstairs switch (as I only have Wireless upstairs at the moment. That will work right?
    Cheers.
Yes, that is also fine.. ethernet being the cable you run.. !!
You still don't have to use a TC.. which is still a rather expensive box for the job.. an Airport Extreme would offer the same exactly minus hard disk for cheaper price and more than likely better lifespan.. TC with internal power supply run too hot.

  • Home setup - network switch and 2 Time Capsules

I have an ADSL modem/router (Billion BIPAC 5200G). I have used it previously with wireless turned off. I then used a time capsule  in bridge mode so that NAT etc is turned off, and then use it to broadcast wifi and as a backup. It is attached to the modern with ethernet. It worked fine.
I am now in a house with a lot of ethernet ports, linked to a massive hub thing. But it needs a switch to link it all together.
So I am thinking of this setup:
    PHONE LINE
    to
BILLION ROUTER (Set as a router with wifi turned off)
    to
    NETWORK SWITCH
    to
VARIOUS ethernet enabled devices in different rooms (i.e. printers, Apple TV, TV, Time capsule)
Then I want to use my 2nd time capsule to extend my ground floor network by plugging it in essentially directly into the time capsule via ethernet in roaming mode.
Is this the optimal setup for this? My other idea was to forgo the network switch and do it this way:
    PHONE LINE
    to
BILLION ROUTER (Set as a router with wifi turned off)
    to
VARIOUS ethernet enabled devices INCLUDING the TIME CAPSULE and PRINTER.
    then:
    To the TIME CAPSULE:
    to
VARIOUS ethernet enabled devices INCLUDING Imac, Apple TV and another TIME CAPSULE in roaming mode.
My main questions are: which setup will give me better speeds to all devices. Ie: is the switch even necessary? In my 2nd example, will the first time capsule and printer be available to the Imac.
There seems to be no real advantage to having the TIME CAPSULE in router mode while keeping the BILLION ROUTER as a pass through with NAT off (To avoid Double NAT) except for the guest network capabilities.
If its just simpler to have the network switch, then perhaps that's the way to go. If so: any suggestions on network switches that work well?

It doesn't allow me to select ethernet as an option for internet connection, only dchp, ppoe and one more which isn't ethernet.
DHCP is correct setting. .it will use ethernet but the new AC TC has problems.. it needs a crossover cable with some switches. Or you need to return it and get it replaced as there is something wrong with its wan port.. the new AC model needs a hardware revision and about 3 or 4 firmware upgrades before it hits the status of the Gen4 it replaced.
My questions are: should I connect my time capsules together directly with ethernet using another available port in my new time capsule. I thought my switch would work better. Also, does one time capsule have to be in router mode instead of having both of them in bridge.
Both should be in bridge.. but you can rearrange things to see if any of the other devices works better.
You can use the billion or the old TC.. plug the new TC into those.
Bob is correct though.. the switch is the correct thing for everything to be plugged into .. but in home situation what works is more important than what is best. It if fails in all of them then the WAN port is proven faulty.
Should I be able to use the hdd on the 2nd (older) time machine as essentially a networked hdd for putting movies and music on, and use my new time capsule as the sole backup (occurring both over ethernet for my iMac and wifi for our laptops)
Yes, that is ok.. you just need to get the AC version TC actually working properly.
Give us a few screenshots of things.. that really helps to see.

let me start by saying im a rookie to the programming environment but i have used Labview a couple of times to understand the basics,  i have a computer and a laptop (both using vista), both of them with Labview Full development System (Student ed. with Mathscript) installed, so what im tryin to do is to use the built in microphone located in the laptop to aquire sound and then use a Shared Variable to transfere the sound signal from the laptop to the computer, the laptop and the computer are connected to a network via a network switch and ethernet cables,  so far i nothing worked, i can manage to create the shared variable in the laptop and use it there but it doesnt appear in the computer, im not sure whats the problem i have even disabled firewalls in both systems, help from anyone wil be appreciated.....

  • Dual Network Issues

I have set up a n network using a new airport extreme base station and have a g band running alongside it using my old base station. After a lot of resets and trying different things, everything appears to be working. However, when I try to have my Mac Pro (which is the only computer using the n network) switch over to the g network, the Mac Pro is unable to do so. I guess not a huge deal, but does anyone have any theories??

The old router is wireless and is attached wan to ethernet on the N apple. I have reset everything a couple dozen times and things seem to have stabilized for the time being and the MP will work on either the old G network or the new N network. Still, I do not think the new N router is exactly ready for prime time but I have my fingers crossed!

  • Failover did not happen when network switch went down!!! PLEASE HELP

    Hi gurus,
Yesterday one disaster struck my RAC database. We have two node cluster and it is 10.2.0.2, both of them located in different sites, yesterday suddenly power went down and the one of the network switch went down and got destructed, node one of RAC database was connected to that switch, but the failover did not happen to the node two as this should be the case when one node goes down the other should be available for all the node one sessions/connections.
when I tried to ping/telnet the node 1, it was not happening because the switch was down, the network guyz connected the cables to other switch available. When I connected to the node 1, it was showing "Oracle is not available" message.
And when I tried the other node, it was the same case but I did not see any error in alert log file. Then my TL restarted both the nodes and then the database was available.
I am very confused that how the failover did not happen and how the database went down, PLEASE suggest something to how to identifiy what was happened. Thanks & Regards
    Edited by: user1221 on Mar 18, 2009 1:09 AM

About Oracle RAC ... you have 2 nodes ... You have to connect 4 IPs.
    I mean
    - IP public node1
    - IP public node2
    - IP Virtual node1
    - IP Virtual node2
    When node1 down
You can not ping "IP public node1", but you should ping "- IP Virtual node1", because it should up on node2.
    But not bind 1521 port.
    Idea about failover
you have to create new difference Service...on RAC Database!
and on your client have to set TNS to on failover and balance (if you used OCI), you can use TAF feature
    Example:
    DB =
    (DESCRIPTION = (ADDRESS = (PROTOCOL = TCP)(HOST = db01-vip)(PORT = 1521)) (ADDRESS = (PROTOCOL = TCP)(HOST = db02-vip)(PORT = 1521)) (FAILOVER=ON)(LOAD_BALANCE = yes) (CONNECT_DATA = (SERVER = DEDICATED) (SERVICE_NAME = NEW_SERVICE_DB) (FAILOVER_MODE = (TYPE = SELECT) (METHOD = BASIC) (RETRIES = 180) (DELAY = 5))))
If you use JDBC, can not use TAF.
Anyway, I suggest you read more about RAC on http://otn.oracle.com/rac and http://oracleracsig.org
    Good Luck

  • Adding network switch to external WAN to increase number of ports available

This may be a stupid question but this has kinda been landed on me so I'll ask anyway.
We have a Cisco router with ethernet connection to our provider's NTE.  They provide us with one ethernet port on the NTE which we connect to the WAN port on our Cisco router. The WAN interface on our router is configured with a public IP address from the /29 subnet the provider assigned to us.
We have a 3rd party installing SIP connectivity for us and they need us to provide them with a public IP address and connectivity outside our router/firewall for their Session Border Controller (apparently NAT doesn't work well with SIP so we can't have it inside our network and NAT it via our existing router)
Since we only have one ethernet port presented to us by our provider, is this just a case of placing a network switch in between the router and the provider NTE then having our router connect to the switch and the 3rd party's Session Border Controller connect into the switch too?  We can then assign another IP address from our provider's /29 to the 3rd party's kit.
Is it as simple as that or am I missing something?
If it really is that simple, are there any considerations for what sort of switch I should use?  Can it be something relatively cheap and cheerful, does it even need to be a managed switch?

Is it as simple as that or am I missing something?
Should be that simple although I would check with provider ie. a switch will usually send L2 protocols on the link to the provider as well as to the router so you may want to check with them they are happy for you to do it.
Although I suspect they won't care as they don't really know how you have it connected now ie. you could already be using a switch as far as they know.
Still worth running it by them though.
You only need a L2 switch so definitely no need for L3 functionality.
Some people prefer unmanaged switches outside of their network eg. in the untrusted area.
Really up to you whether you need it managed or not.
In terms of overall functionality very little is needed but you would want something reliable as it is another single point of failure.
One last thing, if this is the only connection then nothing else to do but be aware that currently if the provider NTE fails your router knows about it because it is a direct connection. With a switch in between if either side fails the other side doesn't know because it's connection to the switch is still up.
If this is your only connection to the internet then it's not an issue but if you had an alternate path you would need to track the connection to make sure you failed over properly.

  • Attaching Network switch to Airport Express

    Hi,
I have set up my network using a Linksys router and connected my Airport express using WDS............ It works. I am wondering if it would be possible to connect a Network switch To the ethernet port of the airport express so that I can connect multiple peripherals namely a NAS and another computer.
    thanks

Hello natsan. Welcome to the Apple Discussions!
If you have a working WDS between your Linksys router and the AirPort Express Base Station (AX), the AX's Ethernet port should now be enabled ... and you should be able to connect an Ethernet switch to it.

  • HT3728 I have factory reset and firmware updated my airport extreme, but although it should have dual network capacity, I can now only create a single network.. Suggestions please

I have factory reset the extreme base station and updated firmware, however, now there do not appear to be dual networks. Why is that

Then you may be possibly referring to the Guest Network option?.....which would not be enabled by default when you reset the device back to default settings.
You can use AirPort Utility to enable that function.
