Dual Networks? Is this right?

hello, all - i'm sure this topic is out there, i just can't find it, so here goes...
i have an airport EXTREME base station (n) and TWO airport EXPRESS base stations. according to everything i've heard and read, the network will work only as fast as the slowest connection. which means i won't get N speeds, but only G speeds, as the EXPRESS moves at G only. which also means if i breakdown and buy an apple TV, it won't take advantage of the N speed of my new router.
HOWEVER, i believe i read or heard that i could, essentially, set up TWO networks - one with the AEBS and the other using the EXPRESS. that way, i'd be serving N speeds to the TV, and G speeds to my computers (G5, mac mini (core duo only) and powerbook - all of which, by the way, can only obtain G speeds). is this true?
if so, here's what i did - i setup the AEBS (connected to my cable modem) using WDS (at n speed, b/g compatible) as a WDS main, and connected the EXPRESS (as a WDS remote, both on the same channel) to the AEBS via ethernet. it APPEARS i have two networks now under the airport menu in the finder.which, if i've done this right, means i can connect my computers the G network and, when i get the TV, connect that ot my N network. is this at all right, or even close?
i've read the manuals and searched the chats, but seem to be lost on this one. ANY help, advice, direction is CERTAINLY appreciated.

It is true that the overall bandwidth of the 802.11n network will take a performance "hit" when non "n" devices are connected to it, but not all the way down to 802.11b/g.

Yes. It is called a "dual-band" network and setting it up is described in the Designing AirPort Networks Using the AirPort Utility document, starting on page 48.
if so, here's what i did - i setup the AEBS (connected to my cable modem) using WDS (at n speed, b/g compatible) as a WDS main, and connected the EXPRESS (as a WDS remote, both on the same channel) to the AEBS via ethernet.
A WDS is NOT what you would want in this scenario, instead you would want to set up a "dual-band" network as described in the link provided above.

    I have a laptop with wireless (rt2500) and wired nic. Both work fine, but I am in a situation where I need to connect the wireless to one network, and the wired to another network. (Wireless to the internet, and wired to small home network). Im not trying to bridge them. I can set this up pretty easily, just using DHCP for both the wireless and wired, but after 15 minutes to an hour, requests I make on the wireless side try going over the wired network.
    I tried fix it by:
    route add -net 10.18.0.0 netmask 255.255.0.0 ra0
    route add -net 192.168.1.0 netmask 255.255.255.0 eth0
    but still after a half hour or so the requests I make on wireless (internet) try going over the wired interface.
    Any ideas on how to keep these two interfaces associated with their respective networks?

    I just had an AHA moment and think I solved my problem.
    route -n gives me
    Kernel IP routing table

    So both eth0 and ra0 have destinations to the 0.0.0.0 network. Thats no good because only ra0 really goes to the internet. so I just did
    route del -net 0.0.0.0 eth0
    So now

  • Lackluster Dual Network Setup - HELP!

    Here's my setup:
    DSL

    AXBS (UFO) 2.4Ghz b/g --> PowerBook G4 (10.4.11); iPhone (Original)
    I

    Time Capsule 5Ghz n (Bridged) --> MacBook Pro (10.5.4); MacBook (10.4.11 - n enabled)
    The Time Capsule's Strength and Range is suppose to far exceed that of the older Base Station. When I'm near the location of the two transmitters the 5Ghz n is barely twice as fast as the 2.4Ghz b/g (tested with large file transfers between the 2 newer laptops, and then file transfers between the MacBook Pro and the older Powerbook). When I'm farther away the 5Ghz n drops away and the 2.4Ghz b/g remains relatively strong. Switching between the two networks when I'm at a distance strangely still shows full solid bars for both networks.
    So does anyone have any suggestions or further question that might help me improve the speed and range of the newer Time Capsule? Thanks

    Just to update everyone:
    Today I moved my whole dual network setup to a more centrally located spot in the house. This has definitely improved the coverage of the 2 network bands (n & b/g).
    Additionally, since I only recently acquired the TC, I originally just added ("bridged") it off of my existing b/g network. With todays move, I decided to switch the 2 base stations and have the TC and its' "n" network the first connection off of the DSL router. Then reconfigured the older ABS Extreme (UFO) to "bridge" off the the TC. While I am convinced that I did not originally have the 2 networks co-mingled (as early speed tests confirmed), I seem to be experiencing improved internet speeds in the 5Ghz ("n") network. Could this be due to no longer "bridging" the TC through the older ABS Extremes' internal Ethernet switch?
    As per Tesserax suggestion, I then did a Signal-to-Noise ration (SNR) survey of the house, and came up with some good results based on the SNR Guidelines in Tesserax comments above.
    35 to 45 SNR throughout most of the house. About 25 SNR just outside in the patio where I was barely getting a connection before. Things have definitely improved. And I am very pleased. Clearly network speed is the advantage of 802.11n technology.
    Nevertheless, my original observation still seems to apply. Here's why: Detached from the house is the garage and an office. As I moved out toward the office during the SNR survey (about 50 ft. away), the strength of the 5Ghz ("n") network dramatically dropped off, and was eventually non-existent inside the office. Yet I could switch over to the 2.4Ghz ("b/g") network and easily browse the internet.
    Apple's marketing claims "AirPort Extreme delivers data transfer speeds up to five times those of previous-generation 802.11g wireless networks — while achieving up to twice the range."
    Now I fully accept, as Apples' footnote states, "Based on a comparison with Apple's 802.11g products. Comparison assumes AirPort Extreme network with 802.11n-enabled computer. Speed and range will be less if an 802.11a/b/g product joins the network. Accessing the wireless network requires an AirPort- or AirPort Extreme-enabled computer or other Wi-Fi Certified 802.11a/b/g-enabled computer. Actual performance will vary based on range, connection rate, site conditions, size of network, and other factors. Range will vary with site conditions." If "site conditions" are limiting the range of the 5Ghz band, why aren't those same site conditions limiting the 2.4Ghz band as well. While I don't realistically expect a full doubling of range between the 2 bands, couldn't I expect SOME? Otherwise the marketing claims are meaningless.
    Can the disparity be explained by Tesserax' observation above, "we know the stricter the wireless security employed, the more overhead is "eating away" the overall bandwidth so we would expect poorer performance when using WPA2 vs. WEP." Now the TC only has WPA2 security available. Are we to assume that Apple's range claims do not apply to the TC then? If I switch my older ABS Extreme (UFO) from WEP to WPA2 will the result match Apple's marketing claims? I'd rather not chop off my good right leg just so it will match my missing left leg. Perhaps my expectations for 802.11n technology were a little too high. Don't get me wrong. I'm very happy with the results. And I am thankful for Tesserax advise. I also appreciate the fact that I am not (yet) experiencing the difficulties that others here are having with the Time Capsule.
    Ultimately, I assume that picking up an Airport Express "n" will extend the 5Ghz network into the office. Is this correct? If anyone has observations on this or my thoughts above, feel free to share them with the rest of us.

  • Adding a TC into an AT&T U-Verse network - will this scenario work?

    Hi all - my current setup is as follows ...
    DSL service is AT&T U-Verse, provided via a 2WIRE modem/router located in the basement. The house is extensively hardwired with CAT5 cables that all terminate at the 2WIRE location, so I have strong wired support wherever I need it. But the 2WIRE is a poor wireless device, and its location in the basement further limits its usefulness.
    My main machine, a MacBook Pro, is in a 2nd floor office hardwired to the 2WIRE for performance reasons.
    I have been using a Buffalo LinkStation NAS for my Time Machine backups. This was not easy to setup and has had a few hiccups over the past year so I've been thinking of using something else for TM and retask the Buffalo for archiving video and RAW files. Right now I use a Cisco switch to split the office Ethernet run to service the Buffalo and the MBP.
    My first inclination was to purchase an inexpensive 1TB drive for TM and hardwire it to the MBP. This is ok since this machine is normally hooked up to other peripherals when in the house (I only use it as a laptop when I travel). But there are two other mobile MBs in the house, plus an iTouch, and they all suffer from the 2WIRE's poor wireless so I've been thinking of going the TC route instead to solve both problems at the same time.
    Here's what I'd like to do - does this make sense?
    I'd keep the 2WIRE in place, serving the hardwired locations as it does today and leaving it's radio on for the non-Apple devices. I would connect the run from the 2WIRE to the office (which currently feeds the Cisco switch) to the TC and configure the TC in bridge mode so it basically extends the 2WIRE network.
    I would be able to use the TC's wireless for the Apple devices in the house.
    I would hardwire the TC-MBP connection for TM purposes to get better performance, and also run the Buffalo off the TC via wire.
    Does this make sense and, more importantly, will it work? My goals are a) have a more reliable solution for TM, and b) improve wireless support in the house.

    This should work very well. For the TC, you'll need to configure the wireless with exactly the same wireless network name, security and password as the 2Wire to create a seamless "roaming" network. Devices will be able to "roam" from area to area without having the change networks in this type of configuration.
    I would be able to use the TC's wireless for the Apple devices in the house.
    The TC will create a dual band network, so you'll have the advantage of both 5 GHz and 2.4 GHz bands for your wireless devices. Since the TC will be in bridge mode, it will not be possible to enable the separate Guest Network feature on the TC...a possible downside depending on your plans.
    I would hardwire the TC-MBP connection for TM purposes to get better performance, and also run the Buffalo off the TC via wire.
    You will be able to take advantage of the Gigabit ethernet capability of the TC and your devices. I'm not sure if the Buffalo drive has Gigibit ethernet ports or not.
    Does this make sense and, more importantly, will it work?
    Should work very well. The only tricky part will be matching the wireless security settings on the TC with the 2Wire. If the security settings don't match exactly, you will wind up with two separate networks, each requiring their own log in.
    I helped a neighbor recently with a similar setup on a 2Wire and Apple router. The 2Wire was using WPA-PSK-TKIP encryption and we found that choosing the WPA/WPA2 Personal option on the AirPort matched up nicely. The two routers now provide in effect, one large wireless network. Works great.

  • Dual network problem - trouble seeing B/G network in farthest location

    My iPhone and MacBook Pro cannot see the B/G network in the room farthest from the main base station, even though there is an AEX in the room set up to provide internet and Airtunes.
    My set up is:
    N network - 2 AEBSn base stations
    B/G network - 1 AEBS (connected by ethernet to the main AEBSn) and 3 AEX's
    I tried to follow the directions for setting up a dual network and think I have done it correctly. But even though I receive a strong N-network signal in the farthest room, I cannot see the B/G network at all, it just seems to disappear.
    Any help would be most appreciated.

    I guess third times a charm. The hard reset of the AEBS finally worked and Airport Utility recognized it and I set it up to join my existing network as a WDS remote.
    It works well, but every time I try to access the newly added AEBS b/g via Airport Utility, I get asked for my keychain access and then for the AEBS b/g password. I established the AEBS password during the Airport Utility setup, but now it is not recognized and is not even in my Keychain Access Utility. I selected the "remember keychain" checkbox during the set up too.
    Any ideas on this keychain issue?

  • Nokia 701 Restarts when it is in Dual Network Mode

    I owned a 701 since Dec'11, but recently after the latest sw update after some day s it started restarting on its own almost 10 -15 times a day. I able to drill down the root cause after some un-installation and setting changes, It only restarts when its on dual network mode when it tries to switch between 2G to 3G and vice versa.
    Any one has observe this issue & any solution.
    Currently I'm using Airtel network in INDIA.
    For temporary if using either 2G or 3G according to my need due to the issue.

    Currently, have an older AEBS (b/g) connected to my modem. My G5 is connected to it via an ethernet cable. My Intel iMac is connected wirelessly to the AEBS via an older (b/g) AX which amplifies my signal and is also connected to a stereo system). I have a 1 TB TC and would like to set up a dual network so that I can capitalize on the faster N speeds offered by the TC and backup both computers.
    Modem -> TC -> AEBS -> G5 (by ethernet cable): the b/g network
    TC ->Intel iMac (wireless): the n network.
    Will the older (b/g) AX work with iTunes on both computers? Which network should it be a part of?
    And how does this dual network configuration work for backing up both computers? Anyone have something similar? Will Airport Utility do this or do I need to do it manually?

    Thanks for pointing out that my AEBS needs to be in Bridge mode and for clarifying that AirTunes will work on either network.
    Any experience with using TC as a backup on a dual network?
    I wonder how many out there have taken advantage of third party apps that given one more options for backing up less frequently than TC does?

    I should point out that it worked when the iPhone was set back to factory settings, but when restored with the backup, data/internet no longer works again, and I get the "Could not activate cellular data network" error message yet again.

    Generally, this issue should be related with something called split tunneling, since you’re using a F5 vpn client, you need to look for something related to split tunneling in the F5 VPN client's documentations.

  • Huge Acrobat temp files - is this right?

    When using the reduce file size function, I have noticed that acrobat produces massive temp files.  I was running some files over night, and acrobat crashed, presumably because it ran out of HD space.  Upon looking for what was using all the space, I found a temp file in "C:\Documents and Settings\{user}\Local Settings\Temp".  This file was 75gig.  On another machine that I was running some files on, the file was 115gig.
    Is this right?  Why does acrobat produce files of such size when the original files are nowhere near that size combined?
    Why doesn't acrobat delete the temp file after it has finished 1 file, then create a new one for the next file?
    Running Acrobat 9 Pro on Windows XP, and Windows 7.
    Edit - I just ran a 3MB file through reduce file size, and acrobat created a temp file of 446MB

    Bridge is not designed for use over a network nor is it official supported by Adobe for that matter.
    The application itself uses its data written to the user library for one computer. Some people have managed with great care and knowledge to let it function over a network but I think as soon as you let people write data them selfs from different workstations things pretty soon get bad due to not having this data available to other users.
    The Image archivist is one that has succeeded to use Bridge over a network, google this name and you will find his blog
