Dual or single monitors

Hi I am a web and graphic designer and want to sort out a new setup at home.
I have a great setup at work with 2 19 inch monitors on a HP laptop dock. I simply undock my laptop when I want to go portable.
Dual screens are also good for me especially in DW as I have DW on one side and a browser to test on the other side.
But I want to know, that monitors are now bigger and even TV's LEd's are used as monitors, are some you designers now opting for larger single screens or are most happy with a dual screen setup?
Also, I am not working at home too much so a single screen might be better to play games ect
Thanks

It really is preference, you kinda have to try it both ways tor a while to know. I currently use a single 24 inch monitor and for the most part I like it better than two smaller ones. I do miss some of the features you can only get with a second monitor, but even with a 24 and smaller one, there would be too much head turning and the second one would be too far away for my eyes. And I like having one directly in front.
The screen rez is 1920x1200 so in most cases I still have plenty of real estate to see everyting I need to at a time, with a little extra effort in positioning windows and switching between apps. But, some things are just better and easier with a second monitor, one being what you mentioned, browser previews. And one thing that still gets me, when I have DW, Photoshop and maybe Flash all open, I'm sure to exit the wrong program at times as their title bars all look the same in Windows.

  • Apps/windows lost going from dual to single monitor

I use a MacBook Pro at work, where I hook up to an external monitor. Later at home when I use the MacBook without the external monitor, I lose windows for apps that were last viewed on the other monitor. If I use Exposé to view all the open windows, the missing window slides in from off screen. If I try to select it, it slides back off screen.
Is there any simple way to get the app window back into the single screen? So far the only solutions I've found are to delete the app's preferences, or to track down the plist that describes the windows location and go in and manually edit the coordinates. There has to be a better, simpler solution.
Two apps that I have noticed this happening with are Apimac Timer and DivX Converter.

Open the Script Editor in the /Applications/AppleScript/ folder and enter the following:
    tell application "app name"
    set bounds of window 1 to {357, 296, 667, 511}
    end tell
Insert the name of the application which controls the window between the quote marks in line 1. If this command moves the wrong window, increment the first number in line 2 until the correct one is targeted; you can also specify windows by name the same way the application's name is specified. This does not work with all windows and applications. The script can be run multiple times for different applications.

  • Hello everyone, I would like to know if a retina display macbook 15 "there is a way to connect 2 monitors full hd and use it as if it were a single monitor with a resolution of 3840x1080. Thanks

Hello everyone, I bought a macbook retina 15 "display.'ve Connected 2 full hd 1920x1080 monitor as extended desktop, if I cast two movies I can see them on the second monitor, but if I wanted to launch 3840x1080 1 movie how do I watch on two monitors side by side ? same thing if I wanted to work on both monitors as if it were a single monitor with a resolution of 3840x1080. I hope for your reply, sorry for my English, I used a translator. Thanks

If you have used the Displays system preference to arrange the monitors next to each other, you should be able to stretch a movie player window across both monitors.
I do not think there is a way to show the movie full screen across both monitors, because full screen usually takes over just one monitor.

  • W540 + Dock + Dual U28D590 (UHD) monitors

    Hi,
I have a W540 dock previously driving 2xDell U3011 monitors. It worked okay (there were problems with the U3011 going into a sleep-freeze-hell mode but from what I could gather it was more a problem with the U3011 firmware).
I've just upgraded (or tried to) to 2xSamsung U28D590 UHD monitors. This does not appear to work well at all. I've experienced the following symptoms in the following conditions:
(excuse bullet point formatting - cannot figure out how to nest bullet points)
One monitor plugged in - either monitor, on either display port - works fine. Monitor goes to native, laptop lcd goes to native.
Both monitors plugged in, Laptop open - I can drive ONE of the D590's to the native (3840x2160) resolution. The other monitor connects at 1024x768. Any attempt to change resolution on this one gives the ambiguous "Unable to save display settings" error.
Any attempt to disconnect the laptop screen in the screen configuration also gives the "Unable to save display settings" error.
Both monitors plugged in, laptop closed
Ths initial state here is glitchy. The screen config thinks both screens are on, but only one is actually showing anything. It is also periodically flickering (the screen goes dark, for maybe a tenth of a second) as if it is in a lower-power configuration, and as far as I can tell this is happening consistently at 1hz. I haven't run this for long because I am afraid it is doing damage to the monitor.
After some tinkering I can get both screens to show at 2560x1440. Any attempt to push either screen to native simply causes the screen to flicker and the "Do you want to keep these display settings?" prompt to come up - however the screens remain at 2560x1440.
Has anybody else had any experience with trying to drive 2 UHD monitors? I'm really hoping I haven't just wasted a lot of money.
I'm happy to not use the laptop LCD if that is necessary. I would try discrete only BIOS mode but this has been removed for reasons beyond my understanding.
    My configuration:
    Windows 7 Ultimate x64 SP1
    W540
       - 20BGCTO1WW.
       - Bios version GNET60WW (2.08). I know the BIOS is old - the laptop originally shipped with 2.09 - but I had all manner of hellish problems getting my RAM to work (see http://forums.lenovo.com/t5/W-Series-ThinkPad-Laptops/W540-with-G-Skill-F3-1866C10D-16GRSL/td-p/1459... and ended up downgrading. I've checked the BIOS changelog and nothing seems to relate to this issue so I have avoided upgrading for the moment to avoid the risk of bricking my laptop
       - 2880x1620 LCD
       - Quadro K2100M - drivers 9.18.13.1269
       - Intel HD Graphics drivers 10.18.10.3910
Dock 40A20135AU (yes, the 135W dock - I was told on these forums this was okay, and indeed is the unit shipped/recommended for the W540 by Lenovo Australia).
       - I believe I've upgraded the firmware available from here http://support.lenovo.com/us/en/documents/pd028011 . I'm not 100% because after running it, it showed a progress box for flashing which disappeared and there was no confirmation prompt.

Colonel, just realised I didn't answer your previous question - yes, I am driving both monitors from display port cables.
I've updated the NVIDIA Drivers to 9.18.13.1269. Unfortunately this hasn't made a difference (well, it has broken wake from sleep again, but it has not helped)
I've also installed the monitor drivers but this also has not made a difference unfortunately.
ptdh thanks for the information. The fact that I was able to drive a single monitor at 3840x2160 makes me suspect something else is afoot. Not entirely sure if the Pro2840m drivers would work at all on my monitor or even a good idea - from what I understand they are different panels?
Maybe there's just better inherent support in Win8 because of the drive for retina level everything. At the moment unfortunately I don't have time to go and install Win8 on a test drive just to check this.
I have a suspicion it might be a problem more with the Intel side of things thanks to the convoluted optimus display. But sadly I cannot force discrete at a low level because in their infinite wisdom Lenovo have removed that option from the BIOS.
Also tried installing the Intel drivers (not sure if the correct ones - here https://downloadcenter.intel.com/Detail_Desc.aspx?DwnldID=23764&lang=eng&ProdId=3319) but unfortunately due to the usual OEM/Vendor faffery they won't install on my system.
If anyone else has more input (any official comment from Lenovo rep? I have emailed support but it's been radio silence so far)

  • Dual cloud dual hub single tier dmvpn with backup service provider

    Hi,
I have a design issue with a WAN network. I have decided to use dual cloud dual hub single tier DMVPN topology (ref. to http://www.cisco.com/application/pdf/en/us/guest/netsol/ns171/c649/ccmigration_09186a008075ea98.pdf - "Dynamic Multipoint VPN (DMVPN) Design Guide"). I have tested in lab 2 hubs and 3 spokes, applying the mentioned technology. Everything is OK, when the primary hub fails, there is only 1-3 seconds loss (3 pings).
The problem is that each spoke and hub will have 2 service providers for WAN - primary and backup. I am still wondering which design is better and more stable to implement - using more DMVPN clouds (for the backup service provider network) or creating static IPSEC GRE tunnels in the backup links?
Is there a guide for this case?
What is the best practice in this case?
    Thanks in advance,
    Mladen

Dynamic spoke-to-spoke requires your spoke routers to have mGRE tunnel interfaces. If you ever have a spoke which sources 2 tunnels from the same physical interface, you have a problem: how to resolve which tunnel is an incoming NHRP request for?
My DMVPN is a bit different in that the crypto is GETVPN on the physical interface. There is a crypto-map applied to the physical interface and it has 2 entries which correspond to the GETVPN crypto-groups for each tunnel.
I resolved this issue by making one of the 2 tunnels on each spoke router mGRE and the 2nd one point to point. the mGRE tunnel is preferred as primary (we use eBGP through the tunnel, so routes received through the mGRE tunnel are local-pref'd high and we AS path prepend routes advertised out the point-to-point tunnel)
I haven't gone back and tested what happens when you have a spoke which has 2 tunnels sourced from the same interface and another spoke with 2 tunnels sourced from the same interface or from 2 different physical interfaces. The concern is that you may get a situation where one router uses Tunnel 2 for dynamic spoke-to-spoke tunneling, and the other uses Tunnel1, and that the dynamic tunnel setup fails because the crypto map cannot properly decide which crypto group to use for the incoming traffic on the router where 2 tunnels use the same physical interface.

  • DMVPN DUAL HUB SINGLE CLOUD CONFIGURATION EXAMPLE

    Hi,
I am looking for a simple configuration for a dmvpn network running eigrp with two hubs on a single cloud.
Do i just create two nhs entries, nhrp map entries, and two multicast entries on the spoke router tunnel interfaces?  And on the hub routers add a delay on the tunnel interfaces for the one i prefer to be the secondary?
I am looking for confirmation and any other tweaks i need to make. i cant seem to find any examples.
    Thanks in advance!!

Thanks Paul, I have looked over this design guide as this was the fist place i went.  however, i cannot find a configuration example for dual hub/single cloud.
i see the high level design and know you can do it.   but it doesnt show what the configuration would look like...unless i am just reading over it.
    Thanks

  • Dual Samsung 2343bwx Monitors with Mac Mini

I am looking to purchase the new Mac Mini Server for my lab, but have a question. I currently have dual Samsung 2343bwx monitors attached to a Windows 2008 server (please no snickers, I am replacing it with a Mac!) using UltraMon to span the desktop across both monitors. My question is can the Mini support both monitors at 2048 x 1152, and give me the same functionality I have now?
If it does support it can you tell me what connectors your are using?

Should work ok. The 2048x1152 16:9 aspect ratio on the 2343BWX is only slightly more pixels than 1920x1200.
    See this thread:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=9855163&#9855163
And spanning shouldn't be a problem, either.

  • T420 can't use dual DVI connected monitors

I have a T420 connected to The ThinkPad Mini Dock Plus Series 3 - 90W (433810U* - United States), DVI port 1 connected to monitor and VGA connected to second monitor using extended desktop.  This configuration works fine but when I hook up both DVI ports to my monitors only one of the screens work and in the Intel Graphics  and Media Control Panel only shows one monitor. I have 2 different cables 1 DVI-D dual-link and 1 DVI-D single link, the dual-link works with the VGA setup but with the 2 DVI connections only the monitor with the single link cable works.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks

  • Want to know largest Single Monitor I can attach to my 17'' macbook pro

    Hello,
I have a Macbook Pro, 17'' with 2 GB Ram and 2.16 ghz dual core processor. I day trade the currency market and want to add the single largest monitor I can to my mac. If there is a possibility of running some type of splitter and have two monitors, that would be ideal. I have a laptop stand with some fans built in to help keep things cool as well. If I can't get larger than a 20" screen, I may have to get an entirely new computer and really don't want to.
    Thank you,
    Jason

  • One Image for dual and single processor G5 machines

I'm working in a lab that has both single and dual processors G5 machines. There is only one image for both machines and I suspect that we have a few bugs with the single processor machines because of this. Has anyone else used one image for both single and dual processors? Have there been problems. I'm wondering if it is necessary to create two separate images.
    mdinger

There is not difference in the images, but you might have problems with the single G5 machines and 10.4. Did you do the firmware upgrade?
I have ~10 single G5 and 25 dual D5 machines netinstalled from one image without trouble.

  • Dual Display, 2 Monitors - Extended Desktop

    Hello Everyone:
There isn't a clear cut answer or solution in connected a Macbook Air to 2 external monitors in an attempt to create an extended desktop. I have read older posts that it's either doable or not doable. My questions are the following:
-Is it possible to connect a new Macbook Air to 2 external monitors for extended desktop purposes?
-Some users have reported lag issues (mouse dragging , delays, etc.). Will this happen for sure with a Macbook Air or is it a monitor issue?
-What's the best non-Apple monitor brand that would work best with a Macbook Air for dual display purposes? I've read that Dells have a problem in this regard.
-What would be the advantage or disadvantage of using a dock station in setting up a dual display environment? Would this add to the lag, latency factor?
I'm thinking of investing in a new Macbook Air, but I want to make sure I dont end up with silly issues - such as latency, monitors, etc.
Thank you for all your help and advise.
    Best,
    G.

Yes, extended desktop works with monitors set to differant resoultions. the Monitors pref pane allows you to select relative arrangements and rez of all monitors composing the extended desktop.
    personally I run a dell CRT at 2304 X 1728 @ 60Hz along with an NEC 6FG a 2048 X 1280 @ 60Hz off a radeon 9800pro on an MDD.

  • Dual and Single Channel Mode

Talking about dual channel and single channel. Is it a theory or is it really a big significant difference in performance between the two? Just curious

  • Dual vs. single

I am replacing my trusty G3 with a used G4, but before I make a hasty ebay buy, would it be better to get a 500 or 533 MHZ single processor or dual 450MHZ processors?

    bedpan,
Visit this site and review options.
    http://www.vaughns-1-pagers.com/computer/mac-g4-models.htm
Allan J has digested the subject and recommended a digital audio series mac. If you are trying to decide between two systems currently offered on eBay, you will need to make a faster decision than your question implies.
Are you using software that is rewritten to take advantage of a dual processor mac or do you just like the novelty of having dual processors that may never really get used? An emotional purchase is just as valid either way. Buying a dual mac as a collectors item and using it in the mean time is also valid.
