Dual oracle instances on a single server

can a server run two different oracle instances which are two different
versions oracle?
That is,one instance in 7.3.4 and another in 8i!
first of all is it possible that we have 2
installations of oracle in
the same server??
pl advise.

Thanx for this reply.
Can you also please tell me as to what would be the sufficient system resources?
Masy be you can share your server config info if that's allright.

Yes it's possible. I'm running 8.0.4 and 8.1.6 64-Bit versions on the same server. You have to change the environment variable when you log into svrmgrl to access the databases. Other than that it shouldn't be any problem. (Provided you have enough system resources)

  • Number of 10gR2 instances on a single server

    Good evening,
this is my first post here.
We want to create several 10gR2 instances (one per application) on a single linux server (Red Hat 4.0). We do not want to create one instance with separated tablespaces or schemas as the editors of the applications do not support it.
We would like to know how many CPUs we need per instance (in terms of fractional CPU and frequency).
We expect to have from 5 to 15 simultaneous users of these instances (rather OLTP work than decisional). Bigger ones have their own dedicated server.
Do Enterprise edition and Standard edition require the same CPU number/power ?
About multi-core CPUs, is the rule 1dual-core=1.5CPU correct ?
I thank you in advance for your help.

The amount of Oracle Instances you may create in the same box depends, mostly, on the amount of RAM available. You are required to properly configure the unix sempahores, otherwise, even if you have the required free memory, you won't be able to use it.
You have to spread your applications among several instances, but the usage profile is the same among them?, or stated otherwise, are the instances required to be configured just exactly the same? then you can easily estimate the amount of required memory per each instance and the estimated amount of memory required by the users.
Regarding the CPU there is not a thumb rule, you should gather usage statistics based on the current workload present in a typical instance on a typical day (cpu requirements constantly change for the same instance depending on the application usage), and build a baseline after the collected information.
Regarding the kernel parameters (semaphores), I suggest you to continue with this thread where I summarize the semaphore meaning and settings --> Re: Semaphores

  • How to config RAM of two instance sap on single server ???

I have a server (HDD: 146 Gb, 18 Gb RAM, RHEL 5.4 64bit, Oracle 10g R2), I used as system DEV and I have two questions:
Question 1: I want to install two instance SAP (SAP ECC 6.0 and BI 7.0) on this same server. I want to spend 9 Gb RAM for each SAP instance. So I have to configure how (Oracle instance is how much each instance SAP) ?
Question 2: Sap Application generally takes much RAM for each instance
Question 3: I need to install the package to install the SAP instance on RHEL 5.4 64 bit?
    Question 4: What j2sdk package for 64-bit REHL 5.4 64bit?
    thank for your advice

  • Installing/Configuring multiple CMS instances in a single server machine

    Hello,
We are installing BO enterprise server and we have a requirement which is as follows..
    1. We have been given 1 server machine ( actual physical hardware machine )
    2. We have been given two database repository instances ( one for Dev , other for QA )
    3. We have to configure the 2 environments in the same server.
This means, Having two different CMS instances and pointing them to 2 different database repositories in one hardware server machine.
Any pointers how this can be achieved ?
I found a link where its mentioned that it can be achieved through the concept of SIA
    [http://www.businessobjectstips.com/tips/server/business-objects-xi-3-xs-server-intelligence-agent-sia/]
But how do we achieve it?

First of all - this is not a good idea. It's possible to do, but not a good practice.
The purpose of QA environment is to Test what has been developed. If QA and DEV are on the same machine - what's the point?
Then your hardware server has to be big enough to support this.
I might be better to have 2 VM instances...
As to how to go about doing that :
    1. It has been discussed here before, so if you search you'll see some good threads on the subject.
    2. You'll need to review Admin guide and Install and Deployment Planing guides for the version of BO software you're going to use. (http://help.sap.com)
    3. While pure BO stuff is fairly easy - you just create 2 SIA each pointing to its own DB and use different port ranges for both - you'll need to think about how to go about maintaining 2 instances of the Application server (Tomcat, WAS, WL etc ) to host 2 sets of BOE web apps (Infoview/CMC/dswsbobje)).

  • SAP ME - Can you use a single MSSQL instance on a single server?

    Hi,
We need to build a demo system with the minimum of hardware so would like to use just one server.
The build would be Netweaver 7.4, ME 15 & MII 15 Using SQL 2012 as the database.
The question is, can I use a single instance of SQL or do I need to install two ? One for netweaver and one for ME ?
The ME database install guide states the following warning:
    CAUTION
SAP ME does not use the same collation as the SAP NetWeaver database and server. Do
not use the SQL4SAP.vbs provided with MSSQL software to install the SQL Server database
    software.
Does this mean I would install one instance for Netweaver using SQL4SAP.vbs and a second one (using a different port number) for ME using the standard installer ?
Or can I install just one database engine instance and configure the collation for each database individually ?
Also what about any of the other settings, eg Filestream and the XA install ?
Thanks for any guide that you can give.
    Kevin

    Hi Kevin,
We have this exact scenario on one of our internal sandboxes. Install a single SQLServer 2012 (we installed Enterprise version) instance and create the NW, ME WIP, ME ODS, and ME GODS databases separately, with different collations. We also have XA configured on the server, don't know about Filestream.
We are running a 2 CPU 8GB VM instance, I would recommend at least 12GB as 8 is minimal.

  • Installing a second HTML DB instance on a single server

I cloned a number of databases recently - they have all the HTML DB tables, workspaces, applications from the original database.
I modified the marvel.conf file to add some more DADs to point to the new instances.
I stopped and restarted the HTTP Server. (I did not touch the tnsnames.ora files)
When I tried to connect to the new instance with HTMLDB, I got the following error:
    Service Temporarily Unavailable
The server is temporarily unable to service your request due to maintenance downtime or capacity problems. Please try again later.
    Oracle-HTTP-Server/1.3.28 Server at manlsidb01.thurnall.rts.int Port 7777
    Where have I gone wrong?

              </Location>

The problem was that the account had been locked when I cloned the database using Database Configuration Assistant - the log file showed up the error.
I unlocked the account, removed the password encoding and it worked fine.
It would still be nice to know how to encode the password. Will it be encoded if I create the DAD from the Oracle HTTP Server (Components) web page (as described in the Installation Guide in $ORACLEHOME\marvel\doc\installationguide.html)?
Thanks for your updates and for a great product!

  • Multiple Instances of OEDQ on a single server

    Hi,
I am running a Linux Machine (Linux 2.6.18-308.1.1.0.1.el5), on which I have the latest version of Oracle 11g release 2 installed.
I have an instance of oracle Enterprise Data Quality tool running on an apache-tomcat-7 server. Port 8080
Now I have a requirement of Installing another instance of OEDQ on the same server, but a different APACHE_HOME directory and a different Port Number (8081).
So the question is, Can we install multiple instances of OEDQ on a single server?
If so, what are the prerequisites to be maintained.
I did my bit of tries, but ended up having issues with some java errors.

    Hi,
Multiple instances of EDQ on a single server is technically possible provided the installer takes care to avoid port conflicts. It is not the case that there is a single port used by an EDQ server, for example.
For various reasons, it is not officially supported; attempting to diagnose issues on custom installations on Tomcat is especially difficult and we do not provide documentation on this. In general, the requirement usually comes up for Dev/Test instances (as there is no performance advantage of using multiple instances on a single server), where we would recommend the use of virtualization where this is a requirement.

  • Oracle vm single server

    hi,
is there any guide for configuring oracle vm on a single server?
is there any cost to do this for testing?
because i heard that oracle vm is alot cheaper than vmware vpsphere since oracle vm charging only the support subscribtion.
    is it true?

Oracle VM is free to use (said by Oracle: http://www.oracle.com/us/026952.pdf) commercially.
They have a very straight forward support cost (if you choose to purchase it) available here: http://www.oracle.com/us/corporate/pricing/els-pricelist-070592.pdf page 7
To put it into perspective, a 4 node cluster (dual CPU servers) would cost you about $2396 a year. If your servers have 3 or more CPUs, your cost would be $1200 per server per year.
We have a fully supported 96 core (16 cpu), 1TB total ram, 4 server cluster for a whopping $4800 a year (less if you factor in a VAR discount). I don't even want to think about what VMware would charge to license that.
So yes, what you heard is true, and Oracle has made many press released to speak to that point.

  • Oracle multiple homes on a single server

This is about maintaining multiple oracle homes within a single server for different oracle versions.
On a Solaris-9 server I need to have 2 11g versions where 11.1.0.6 serves one instance and 11.1.0.7 is expected to serve 2 upgraded database instances.
For multiple homes involving full installations it is simply a matter of installing software in a new home with a new home-name. But 11.1.0.7 is a patch installation that needs an existing 11.1.0.6.
What is the recommended approach in this case to host multiple oracle homes?
Oracle's documentation claims their cloning tools can be used (prepare.pl and clone.pl perl scripts).
It also has something on runInstaller -clone mention.
What I've achieved so far is:
    (1) Install 11.1.0.6 via Solaris-packaging onto a clean server. This installed onto $ORACLE_BASE/product/11.1.0 using ORACLE_HOME_NAME=OraDb11g_home1
    (2) Upgrade this to 11.1.0.7
    (3) Detach this oracle-home from global inventory
    (4) Rename the folder 11.1.0 to 11.1.0.7
    (5) Re-attach as new oracle-home (name=OraDb11g_11_1_0_7) and relink at the same time using runInstaller -clone command
I am no DBA, so I'd like to know if the above approach is good enough or if there is any other recommended approach.
    Many thanks.
    G.Sharma.
Edited by: Sharmag on May 31, 2012 11:38 AM

@Helios, thanks but curious - why is this not stuiable under installation? - regards,
@Shrini - I am using Solaris packaging for installing oracle software. So unless I rename the target folder I cannot achieve different the same 11.1.0.6 in 2 different folders.
Even if I managed to tweak Solaris packaging and install the second oracle (11.1.0.6) into a second folder, wouldn't that be the same as renaming an oracle folder-name? In this case, we still would end up with the same issue of relinking and correcting the global inventory.

  • Migrating cProject and cFolder into a single server instance

    Hi,
Has anyone had the experience to migrate cProjects and cFolderon seperated server instances into a single server instance? How data migration can be performed assuming cProjects server will be upgraded to 4.5 and the cFolders content will be ported over? is this something do-able? Or it is easier to upgrade cFolder first and migrate the cProjects data over?
Since documents link in cFolder/cProjects could be captured in transaction table, how to resolve it?
Would like to hear from anyone with such experiences... thank you.

    Hi,
Is your new server Unix based? Are you planning to have 2 separate instances with separate DBs or are you planning to do a MCOD? Can you more details on what you mean by "2 in 1"?

  • Multiple Oracle Databases in a Single Windows Server

    Hi all,
I have Windows Server System which has oracle database created.
    My question is:-
How can i create multiple databases on the same server without affecting the first created database & i want to use the both databases at a time?
Please give the steps to do multiple databases in the same server if possible..
    Thanks in advance,
    Venkatesh J

    Venkateshj wrote:

Oracle scales by adding more servers to a single physical database. This is called Oracle RAC.
You want to add more physical databases to a single server - doing the exact opposite of what Oracle offers as a scalable solution.
Please give the steps to do multiple databases in the same server if possible..No special steps. Run DBCA and create a new database instance. In other words, the exact same steps followed for creating the 1st database on that server.
Also make sure you fully understand WHAT you are doing and the IMPLICATIONS of that. An Oracle database is not the same as a mySQL or SQL-Server database. An Oracle Schema is a logical database - and compares to what a mySQL/SQL-Server database is.
And a single Oracle database can contain 1000s of logical databases (schemas). Each with their own dedicated storage, own security, own resource profile, etc.
    Oracle is not mySQL/SQL-Server.
    Understanding the differences is important.

  • DEV and QA within single oracle instance

We need to have our DEV and QA in a single oracle instance. Scripts that refer to tables names in DEV will be copied over to QA for QA testing when unit testing in DEV has been completed. In DEV, we extract data from 5 source systems, one for each US state, which use the same application so the source table names are identical, and therefore in our staging area we have a schema per state such as TX, GA, MD and we extract data into staging tables that are identical to the source tables. Since we do cross state aggregation our scripts have to refer to TX.employee and GA.employee in the same sql statement.
What is the best design for this using SCHEMAS, VIRTUAL PRIVATE DATABASES, VIEWS , SYNONYMS etc?
    Thanks in anticipation

Just for my knowledge, if I did find myself in this situation would VIRTUAL PRIVATE DATABASES make sense here?I suppose you could potentially use VPD. But that would create major problems if you ever wanted to make schema changes-- you couldn't add a new column to a table in DEV, for example, without that column also being available in QA. You couldn't have code in DEV that didn't exist in QA. I suppose you could get really fancy and use 11g's edition-based redefinition to have a dev edition and a qa edition but I'd hate to think how you'd promote code to prod in that sort of environment. Plus, editions is an enterprise feature (at least, I'm not sure if it's an extra-cost option) which would tend to be beyond the pocketbook of a company trying to save on licensing costs by combining dev & qa in a single non-VM server (let alone in the same instance).
You could potentially have your application use all dynamic SQL so that dev could use the DEV_TX schema while QA used the QA_TEX schema and it was just the TX schema in prod, but that obviously gets old really fast. You could create a single set of synonyms so that the TX_FOO synonym points to DEV_TX.FOO for the dev users and TEST_TX.FOO for the test users but then you'd have to remove the schema qualifiers from all your SQL statements.
In short, an application like you describe trying to share an instance would be a rather massive undertaking.

  • Hosting two portals on a single instance of enterprise portal server

    Hi,
We have a requirement to host two different portals on a single instance of enterprise portal server. The URLs to the portals would be different. Also for logging into the portal, one portal would have only User ID and Password and
the other may have Retailer ID, User ID and Password for logging.
I am trying to understand what kind of an approach needs to be followed. There
is a single instance of Oracle server where PCD is stored.
How will authentication/authorization happen and how would the user data be stored for both the portals in a single instance of Oracle database.
    Thanking you in advance,
    Regards,
    Veena

    Hi,
in general,  could do that by using a distinct role concept. With the "Collection of base rules" you can assign different portal desktops with different layouts to everyone based on criterias like groups, roles or users.
We have 4 very different portals running inside one instance. Every portal has its own standardized structure and is selected by logon groups, that points to roles, which points to desktops.
What will not work is a logon concept other than "userid, password". SAP, by default. only allows standard authentication with userid and password or ticket. Even if you use an LDAP that would have that distinction, you cannot query that property without modifying the system
If you want to use anything different, you have to write a new logon handler for the logon stack (using JAAS). This is tricky, but not outrageous difficult. We have implemented three different new steps in the logion stack, each handles a different case, from ip-based logon, ticket or LDAP query. It is possibly, all of them don't have more than 20 lines of java.
    But, still tricky.
It is a broad theme and you can try it out with showcasing two different desktop themes belonging to two different roles. Than you can work your way through tge problems.
In terms of database, it makes no distinction. You work solely with the PCD, and that is stored in the database. We are using DB2 and I've never touched the DB at all.

  • Multiple Database Instances on Single Server and effect of NLS_LANG

What is the effect of the NLS_LANG registry setting on a Windows server that is to host multiple database instance each created with a different database character set ? The server needs to support data in the following languages : Thai, Chinese Traditional, Chinese Simplified, Vietnamese and Korean. Selecting the Unicode character set(AL32UTF8) is not an option since the application is not Unicode complaint.
My understanding is that as long as NLS_LANG is set correctly on the client connecting to the particular database instance then the data will be stored correctly - is this correct ?
What should NLS_LANG be set to on the server if there are multiple oracle instances with different character sets ?

My question is not in relation to connecting to the database on the server itself but with regards to client connections. What I need to know is what is the effect of the NLS_LANG setting in the registry on a server that has multiple databases each created with a different character set ?
Say for instance, the server has two databases - one created with the character set ZHS16GBK and the other created with the character set JA16SJIS and NLS_LANG is set to SIMPLIFIED CHINESE_CHINA.ZHS16GBK in the registry on the server. Will Japanese data that is inserted into the database that has character set JA16SJIS be stored correctly when it is inserted from a client with NLS_LANG set to JAPANESE_JAPAN.JA16SJIS even though NLS_LANG is set to SIMPLIFIED CHINESE_CHINA.ZHS16GBK on the server ?
