Dual Orientation conundrum

My client wants to simply repurpose an existing print magazine into dual orientation folios, so that it's single page in vertical orientation and 'spread view' when turned horizontal. Problem I've run into is that there are half the number of 'pages' in the horizontal orientation (since it's in spreads), so there ends up being no correlation when switching back and forth from vertical to horizontal views.
Help!! I know it's possible since they already have a multiple edition app (created by their print house) that works as expected.

You obviously have not tried it yourself and have no idea what you are talking about.
An example:
Folio article / print spread 1:
landscape view: left page and right page of the print spread 1 together (1 page in Indesign)
portrait view: left page and right page of the print spread 1 one after another. If you set "horizontal swipe only" in the article settings they even will be next to another. (2 pages in Indesign)
Folio article / print spread 2:
landscape view: left page and right page of the print spread 2 together (1 page in Indesign)
portrait view: left page and right page of the print spread 2 one after another. (2 pages in Indesign)
Folio article / print spread 3:
landscape view: left page and right page of the print spread 3 together (1 page in Indesign)
portrait view: left page and right page of the print spread 3 one after another. (2 pages in Indesign)
Folio article / print spread 4:
landscape view: left page and right page of the print spread 4 together (1 page in Indesign)
portrait view: left page and right page of the print spread 4 one after another. (2 pages in Indesign)
Folio article / print spread 5:
landscape view: left page and right page of the print spread 5 together (1 page in Indesign)
portrait view: left page and right page of the print spread 5 one after another. (2 pages in Indesign)
Folio article / print spread 6:
landscape view: left page and right page together (1 page in Indesign)
portrait view: left page and right page of the print spread 6 one after another. (2 pages in Indesign)
So if you are, like you were saying, reading the article that was on spread 6 in the print version and are changing to landscape from portrait … guess what? You will see spread 6 in landscape. And vice versa.
The only minor problem that really exists is: if you are reading a right page in landscape and are changing to portrait, the device doesn't know where on the spread you were looking at and will start with the left page.

  • Dual orientation android app

hello i have a question , im finishing an app with dual orientation folios, i just read this in the adobe help page >
The viewer prefers portrait over landscape (the library is always shown in portrait, and dual-orientation folios open as portrait and cannot be rotated to display landscape layout).
what does it means? my app will only work in portrait orientation?
    thanks

I agree with you 75% (more or less).
If you have just one content to deliver, dual orientation sucks. Make it either portrait or landscape and stick to that. But there are cases when you get extra opportunities using dual orientation. You can tell different story in each mode, or you can complement main mode with enhanced user experience in other orientation. Most common case would be text rich main portrait mode with media and picture galleries in landscape.
I've once made an app about famous philosopher meeting also famous sculptor to discuss the universe, art, life, and humanity. Their dialogue flows in portrait mode, while in landscape user can immerse in contemplating the related art and pictures. The articles correspond to milestones of their discussion, so there is a clear link between each respective portrait and landscape layout, altough the number of h and v pages is usually different.
I can think of other reasons to use both orientations...

  • Problem with dual-orientation scrolling pages

I am trying to load two ID documents as an article for a DPS folio.
    One document 'xx_h.indd' which is 1024W x 1060H, the other 'xx_v.indd' which is 768W x 1200H.
When I try to upload the two orientation by Folio Builder>Add article, then select "Import Multiple Articles" and the folder containing the two files I get a warning:
    Content generation error.
Unable to find files to be imported as article.
If I import open articles the _h is imported as a portrait article.
I have been successful with this for other articles in the folio where the landscape article has a height less than 1024 px.

    Bob,
I tried importing as a single article but I get an error message:
    Content generation error.
[Error: The page size aspect ratio must match the folio aspect ratio.]
Although the horizontal page is actually portrait aspect, being higher than wide, I thought that the file name ending in '_h' would correct that. When I set the width and height in document set-up even though I set it to landscape orientation it defaults back to portrait when I save the file. I seem to have two portrait orientation documents in the folder?
This has worked for me when the _h.indd was still landscape, say 1024 x 825 px.

  • Is it possible to change orientation from dual after creating folio?

Somehow my orientation got converted to dual orientation and iit is only a vertical publication.  It went to my adboe content viewer on my iPad perfectly, but now when i try to view it on my ipad with it hooked into the computer it says orientation does not match.  I looked at the folio and it has landscape and portrait, but i have no idea how it switched as i never created any landscape files.  Any help would be appreciated as I do not want to build it over from scratch again.

Unfortunately, you can't change the orientation settings of a folio. You have to create a new folio. If you set up your folder structure properly when you created the files, importing articles into the new folio is easy. If you built your articles manually, you have to redo your work.

  • Mix single and dual folio orientation

Im not sure if this is a limitation or I'm doing it wrong.
I want to build a folio that has some articles dual orientation and some just horizontal.
When I do this I get an error. Is it possible?

By the way, you might want to watch some videos or download DPS Tips to get up and running. Here are getting started resources:

  • Horizontal and vertical orientations

If I only create one orientation with the document be locked in it?

A folio can  be dual, portrait, or landscape.  So yes-- it will remained locked in a single orientation (whatever you create it to be portrait/landscape) unless you have dual orientation.
If you have set up a landscape only folio, for example, it will not automatically try to create a portrait version when turned, it will just remain locked in the landscape orientation.
Its worth noting that you can not mix-n-match orientations-- your ENTIRE document must be either portrait, landscape, or dual.

  • Single Stack with orientation change

We are working on a portrait only folio with seven stacks.  However, if and when a user changes orientation to horizontal, we've created a single auto-play slideshow. Rather than create seven separate files to accompany the portrait stacks for the horizontal slideshow, threby significantly increasing file size, can we create a single stack or file where the slideshow lives and point to that horizontal stack regardless of what portrait file the user is reading?

No. Dual orientation is all or nothing. You could add a single page to
the other articles that simply says "no content in this orientation for
    this article."

  • Error folio orientation intent

I have a problem with one of my folios. I created that some time ago and may have missed the oportunity to select landscape only orientation and now I most probably have a dual oriented folio.  Trying to publish that folio I get the following error:
"One of your articles does not match the folio orientation intent. Layouts in articles must match the folio orientation intent."
I only have landscape articles in that folio no portrait ones. Is there any way to change it to a landscape only folio after creating or do I have to delete the whole thing and redo it with selecting the landscape only option?
    Thankfull for any inputs!

It's also worth mentioning that you can copy articles from the dual-orientation folio to the new compliant folio via Folio Producer. That's definitely the fastest way of spinning up a new doc.

  • Multi-folio app with both portrait and landscape orientation

Can we create a multi-folio app that contains both portrait and landscape orientation folios?

A multi-folio app can have any mix of portrait, landscape, or dual-orientation folios in it. The only requirement is that for a specific folio all articles in it share the same orientation setting.

  • Question RE Single Orientation

I have a client who wants to do a horizonal only layout. No vertical.
How does DPS render the pages, when it's held in a vertical position, considering there are no vertical folios only horizonal?????

First you should consider yourself fortunate to have client who
understands that dual orientation is a waste of time and effort.
Then you design to whatever orientation the client wants because I
strongly disagree with you assessment of what most people do.
I haven't done a dual orientation app in years and have done a fairly
even amount of portrait/landscape projects. Take a look in the app store
and I think you'll find almost all major publications are single
orientation only. Most print publications choose portrait because it's
easier to adapt the design from the original print version.

  • Orientation error folio of html & indesign

I am getting the following error message
An error has occurred while launching the DPS App Builder application.
'landing' does not match the folio orientation intent. Layouts in articles must match the folio orientation intent.
    http://help.adobe.com/en_US/digitalpubsuite/using/WS67cb9e293e2f1f60530cf39c12f5fcd6d46-80 00.html
the folio is a combination of html articles and indesign documents
And the indesign document is set at 1024 X 768

Your folio is set to both portrait and landscape. Do your InDesign-based articles have both portrait and landscape layouts? Also, because you have a dual-orientation folio, your HTML-based articles should not have an _h or _v suffix; they should be named something like index.html.

  • DPS Orientation

    Hi there!
I have designed a Digital magazine which support Horizontal and vertical ofientation. However I would like that some of my article to be viwed only on one
    direction (in this case horizontal)
I have try deleting the vertical version of the article but for some reason i would not apper in the content viwer
    any advise???

If you want dual orientation then you must have both files in all articles. You can create the vertical orientation by placing the horizontal orientation file into a vertical orientation and then rotating it 90 degrees. This will result in the appearance of a single orientation for that article.

  • Issue with multiple Edge animations in the same article. Please help!

We have 3 edge animations in our 3 page article, one in eache page. The first edge animation you view autoplays great, however when you swipe down or up the other animations just wont play. All of them set to autoplay 0.125 with transparent background. It seems that no matter which one you see first, it kills the other two. We tried importing HTML and DPS  from Edge with the same results.
    Thank you in advance!
    al3nai

I just did a quick test and experienced mixed results. I placed a single edge animation on the first page of a horizontal article, then placed the same edge animation on three pages of the vertical orientation (dual-orientation folio). The edge animation shows up perfectly on the horizontal layout, but only displays on pages 1 and 3 of the vertical orientation. It does not load on page 2.
I also placed an additional Web Content Overlay on page two connecting to a website which loads fine. The edge animation shows the spinning/loading icon but nothing loads.
Sorry, not much help here just sharing similar bugs.

  • Can multiple articles be in one indesign document?

I have an indesign document with multiple articles in it. I made the articles using the Articles panel. How can I add these articles to a folio? When I add an article to a folio using the folio builder panel, it adds the entire document, even though I've used the Articles panel to specify that, say, pages 2-5 are an article named "Family Matters."  Does an article have to be a separate indesign document in order to be added to a folio?
On a more general level, I haven't seen anything in the DPS literature that explains what an article is, what can/can't be an article, etc. I think that would help me. Thanks to anyone who can answer this.

Currently it is one article per INDD document. (Two INDD if you intend to do dual orientation)  The "articles" panel is directed more toward epub and html export.
The concept of the"article" (in terms of the Digital Publishing Suite) was alot easier to understand when it was previous called a "stack" in the prerelease.  The concept is that each page in your article stacks on top of eachother to form one article.  You article InDesign file contains all the pages in that particle "stack" .
Think of it in terms of a magazine.  Each "article" has its own section in the viewer and thus is own InDesign document (consisting of all the pages for that particular article).  All these different articles or InDesign documents come together to make one "folio" or edition of your magazine.
My suggestion would be to get familar with the workflow to understand what is and isn't support from Indesign.  Some great videos are on the "getting started with the DPS" page

  • How do you know what folio (resolution) is sent to different devices?

    Hi,
I wnat ot know how does the viewer app tells wich folio it must downlaod on a specific device. Let me explain.
We created 2 folios with the same content and all the same info (folio name, publication name, etc.) well, all the same info except for the product ID because the person that entered the inapp in the itunes store and the android store made a small typo.
The thing is that on the android devices (we test on samsung Galaxy tab 10 inch(screen res of 1280x800) and the htc flyer) it dowloads the ipad folio.
So my question is, if i make 2 folios and want all the android devices to download the one we make for android (because of the limitations of videos) and only want to ipad to download the ipad version, what do i need to do?
    Thanks!

You got tripped up by the way DPS handles the 48-pixel nav bar on large Android devices. Basically, the viewer picks the largest available folio rendition that doesn't require scaling. However, because you created a 1280x800 folio instead of a 1232x752 folio, the viewer in the large Galaxy tab grabs the smaller rendition. You can read more here:
    http://help.adobe.com/en_US/digitalpubsuite/using/WS9293e1fb3b977c5c-6e66370112f982025bb-7 fff.html#WS67cb9e293e2f1f60f5f54012e30daf910-8000
The fix is to create a folio and articles using the 1232x752 size for dual-orientation folios.
