Dual Powermac G5 2.0Ghz JUST WENT BANG!!!

Hi all, Im writing this through my laptop as my G5 went BANG/POP this morning.
I'm not new to apple macs but I am new to owning the G5 and have little experience with the insides, I've only ever used the G5 at college and Uni. I managed to get my hands on this G5 Dual 2.0Ghz from a friend who has upgraded to a Mac pro and I havent used it as yet because of this:
I had only got a vga monitor so sent off for an adapter from DVI to VGA, the adapter came this morning and so in excitement of owning my G5 I carefully fixed the adapter to the mac and then to the monitor. Powered up the monitor and as always it was perfect and awaiting signal.
After pressing the power on my G5 I heard the glourious hum we all love, I was so pleased about having it and was eagerly awaiting it to start to have a play. Just as the apple logo came onto my screen as it was booting up I heard a MASSIVE BANG/POP and the monitor went blank. I quickly turned off the switches and pulled the plugs out for both mac and monitor and also the power lead of the mac.
After gathering my self together (the bang took me by suprise and scared the **** out of me for a few moments) I switched back on the monitor and as always it was in perfect working condition. The mac however, when I plugged it back in for just a second to see if it was ok, it wouldn't power up and there were no signs of life whatsoever.
I have a little knowledge so immediatly thought it could be the PSU I had heard a few horror stories about them blowing but never before witnessed it. I'm certain its the PSU and I called the friend I bought it from asking and hoping for a solution. He also said it sounded like the PSU, but now Im stuck, Ive just forked out a rather large amount of money for the Mac (Im a single dad and work only part time) I saw that there were a number of certain models that had problems so i cross checked the serial but its not in that group so I cant get apple to sort it for free.
my question is now, where do i go ? Icant afford another G5 Ive spent years trying to get hold of one and not had the funds apart from when this was offered to me at just the top of my limit. I also go to night class at local university studying filmmaking and graphics but I cant do any of what I need to do ecause of the fact I now have no usable mac.
Can I get this fixed cheaper than Im hoping or is it going to cost hundreds of pounds ?
Please help im absolutely gutted that Ive spent all this money for nothing, I only did it to help with my studies so that I can earn more in the long run for my child.
Thanks in advance,
A very gutted Purple Ronnie

Yeah, you should NEVER plug a system directly into the wall like that unless your home is wired with built-in surge protection.
Then still, IMO, you should use good power strips made by a reputable manufacturer like APC.
If your home is wired with surge protection you'd know by the wall plate having a switch or indicator.
I had my house wired that way because I had to have the wiring updated anyway.
It wasn't cheap, and looking back I'm not sure it was necessary.
I still use surge protected power strips on everything and UPS on the most critical components.
I have all my network components on UPS which also has its own surge protection, and of course my home server and PowerMac have dedicated UPS units.
So if the power goes out the network components and workgroup server stay up for 15 minutes.
The PowerMac for a half hour and the basement desktop for 5 minutes.
For the laptops I bought surge protected adapters that just plug right into the wall plates.
No battery backup for obvious reasons.
The surge adapters are no bigger than the wall plates themselves, but protrude outward and have 6 receptacles.
The outer edge is a strip that glows blue when it's solid and grounded, green when it isn't grounded but still solid, and red when the circuit gets tripped.
It's a low intensity glow for the sake of efficiency.
The idea is redundancy.
In the case of a spike, if the built in protection fails the external protection kicks in.
Many people think it's a bit obsessive compulsive.
And it probably is to an extent because I tend to gravitate that way with everything.
I had an NT workstation in 1998 that got totally fried due to a cheap power strip.
It was a traumatic experience!
Rivaled only by the thermal issue with the G5 that I'm currently dealing with.
However, it made me very aware of the evils that electrical spikes/surges present and the damage they leave in their wake.
For best protection you should buy units that have RJ11(telephone) and RJ45(ethernet)protection.

  • MacBook just went dead! Please help.

OK I've been using Macs since 1986 and have done techie stuff for many Mac users but this issue has me stumped. I have a MacBook black, 2.0GHz C2D, 120GB drive, 1GB ram, 10.4.11. I bought it new from Amazon this past April. This Mac has been running flawlessly since its purchase accept for a few random not waking from sleep issues. Closing the lid and opening it after a few seconds would wake it up. It has a 10GB Boot Camp partition running XP which I seldom use. I just recently updated to 10.4.11.
The Problem: While in use the machine just went dead, sort of. The screen went black and no sound is heard. I tried to wake it using a number of keyboard moves. When all failed I tried to hold the power key down to shut it off and restart, but nothing happened. The only sign of life is when I mess with the power button there is a flashing green light coming from the small pin hole just to the right of the video camera. There are actually 2 of the pin holes to the left and right of the camera but the flashing only comes from the right one. This happens while plugged in or running from the battery. We usually run it with the power cord plugged in and this was the case when it went dead on us. I know it's not completely dead because of this light activity. There is also some random light activity coming from the small row of lights on the face of the battery. I haven't really noticed what triggers those lights I just noticed they came on randomly when I would look at the bottom of the machine now and then.
Any ideas on what's going on and how to get me running again?

the same thing happened to me and after the multiple tech steps to revive a dead beast....i went to the genius bar at my nearest apple store....the tech agreed it was a faulty motherboard as i was getting NO power to even the keyboard. we also tried a firewire target disk mode to see if i can even access the HD. we took out the HD to verify that the data was still in fact intact. but oddly enough nothing happened. to give some insight i was importing video from my mini DV cam and it didi a semi kernel panic greey screen shut down and never came back up
the funny thing was, i ended up helping other people who were coming in for service while they were working on mine...6 people in all...and when i left, some of the people still waiting were saying where's the genius going? LOL!
i pray they will upgrade my logicboard to the SR chipset one.....i want i want i want an early xmas present!

  • New Pc went bang before I saved music, IPOD wasn't mass storeage device...

I had a new computer, new Ipod, downloaded new music, life was peachy, new computer went bang, before I had saved other than on my IPOD, now fixed, but with all files erased, and just discovered that I can't copy my music over as I hadn't made my IPOD a mass storeage device on old version of computer! V V sad and frustrated now! Is there anyway around this other than purchasing the music again????

    Hello Ruthie,
I'm not quite sure from your post whether or not your iPod was erased second time around. If your music is still on your iPod there are a number of third party utilities that you can use to retrieve the files from your iPod. This is just a selection.
    YamiPod Mac and Windows Versions
    PodUtil Mac and Windows Versions
    iPodCopy Mac and Windows Versions
    PodPlayer Windows Only
    PodPlus Windows Only
Have a look at the web pages and documentation for these and pick one you are happy with, they are generally quite straightforward.
There is also a manual method of accessing the iPod's hard drive through Windows posted in this thread: MacMuse - iPod to iTunes
For future reference, if you find that you have to link to a new library because of some problem you should always get a message that your iPod is linked to a different library and asking if you want to link to this one and replace all your songs etc, click *No*. Your iPod should appear in the iTunes source list, from here you can change the update setting in Preferences>iPod to "manually manage songs and playlists" Managing Your Songs Manually. In manual update mode, your iPod is safe from being accidentally erased.
You can also use a keyboard command to prevent your iPod auto-syncing with iTunes. While connecting the iPod to the computer on a Mac hold down the Option and Command (⌥ and ⌘) keys, on Windows, hold down Shift + Ctrl. This will stop the iPod from auto-syncing with iTunes and the iPod will appear in the source list. Wait until you are sure the iPod has mounted, and that it will not auto sync and then you can let the keys go. This may take between 3 and 30 seconds depending on your computer. Then go to Preferences>iPod and check the "Manually manage songs and playlists" box.
If you have managed to retrieve your songs keep your iPod in manual mode until you are happy that everything is back, with your playlists etc then it will be safe to return it auto-sync again.

  • I have a 30 inch monitor on my mac pro tower that just went black, what do I do to fix it?

I have a 30 inch monitor on my mac pro tower that just went black, how can I get it back on?

He's asking what are those things you are using, i.e., ...
What video card are you using?
What version of OSX are you using?
What model of mac pro are you using (e.g., 2010 Mac Pro is 5,1).
    And also,
    Try smc and pram reset.
And see if the monitor lites up if you boot in safe mode.
It is possible your monitor simply failed -- its power supply or something else.

  • HT201263 my phone just shut off and will not come back on no matter what I do. It was working fine then just went compeltely dark and is unresponsive. Help!!

My phone was working fine, then just went completely blank, and now is totally unresponsive

Plug it in to mains power for at least 15 minutes.  If it doesn't automatically come on, try a Reset... press the home and sleep/lock buttons until you see the Apple logo, ignoring the slider. Takes about 5-15 secs of button holding and you won't lose any data or settings.

I have an older Power Mac G5 Quad, and my video card just went out. I am trying to find a video card that will work for my Power Mac. I have duel screens but I can't seem to find the appropriate video card. The serial number on my computer is: RM620603R6W. Apple won't help me because the computer is older than suggested. Please give me the exact video card that will work best for my computer.

Hi Mike, make sure the card has Mac ROM, or is a PC card with Mac ROMs flashed to it...

  • Has any Coldplay fan lost purchased content within iTunes, I have recently noticed my Coldplay Live 2012 purchased on iTunes is gone from my iCloud library and no longer available for purchase ! A bit strange considering there new album just went on sale

Recently I have noticed my iTune purchased concert movies after being put back in the cloud are currently missing.
I have never had purchased content from iTunes vanish from my iCloud library and also not be available for purchase on iTunes.
When I had Apple personnel attempt to push the content back to me, they could not find Coldplay's Live 2012.
Even more strange considering their new album just went on sale and renewed interest must be prompting fans to review their collections.
A beautifully shot concert film is missing, a sad situation to be sure!
Thanks for any iCloud wisdom and other fans noticing the same thing.

  • My iphone 4s' screen in broken, without dropping it.it just went hazy white to dark green and i can no longer see my screen, can i have a screen replacement?

My iphone 4s' screen is broken. I haven't dropped it or anything, or else it must've shown through its physical appearance. It just went into hazy white and green and now i cannot use it. Can i have a replacement for it? Thanks

Apple doesn't replace the screen, they replace the entire phone.  If you've tried the basics (restart, reset, restore from backup, restore as new) and your screen is still broken, bring it to Apple for replacement.  If you're not in the warranty period, you will pay $199 for the replacement.

  • I have been dragging my files to a external drive to have a back-up for them and I lost some of my folders. They just went completely missing. I didn't delete them, and it was all stuff that I have worked on in the past month. How do I get them back?

You really should be doing backups with an actual backup application, especially one that will work automatically, and, if your external HD is large enough, back up your entire system.  These can automatically back up only what's changed since the  previous backup, and some will keep "archive" copies of things you've changed or deleted, also.
Too many things can go wrong, such as your internal HD failing, and you'll have a major project to reinstall everything.
You already have Time Machine, built-in to OSX.  You might want to review the Time Machine Tutorial, and perhaps browse Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions.
#27 in the second link mentions some alternatives, too.

  • HT202157 I have just went to use my airplay and it's now asking for a passcode which I don't have what can I do

I have just went to use my airplay and my airplay is asking for an apple passcode which I didn't set any suggestions

In the Airplay settings section on AppleTV there should be an option to enable/disable Airplay a password - basically used to stop someone hijacking someone else's AppleTV display unless they know the code.

  • My iPad just went black and the black travels up and down or side to side and I can't force it to close I don't get the red bar what's going on

My IPad just went blank/black/gray sometimes lines cannot force close as the red bar does not come up
The blank screen color travels up and down or side to side
    What is causing this
Either way when plug in or not the battery level is at 70%

    Try this.
Reset the iPad by holding down on the sleep and home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider if it appears on the screen - let go of the buttons. Let the iPad start up.
