Dual Purpose Dual Layer DVD drive recommendations...

I work in both a Mac and PC environment( favoring the former) but I have a need to update my Win XP production machine with a DVD drive (read more than read/write) to do some testing for a project.
The Plextor offerings fit the XP bill but the LaCie with LightScribe would be nicer.
Is there a third or 4th choice among the discussion lists as only the above two were returned on a search of the archives. I'd really like to have the option of using the unit in either environment.
Thanks

The Dell only has USB. I'm not motivated to put any $ into this area so I'll put the dual layer drive aside and just get something to have a PC with DVD for the project.
Thanks

  • Dual Layer DVD drive in Power Mac G4?

    Hi,
I ordered a Power Mac G4 and I have an internal dual layer DVD drive with lightscribe built into it. I installed it in my PC awhile ago and it works fine but I want to know if it will work in a Power Mac G4 running OS X (Tiger/Leopard)? The model number is IDVD16DLS and it's manufactured by I/O Magic. It's a really good drive and I hope it works on Mac.

Optical drives sold by I/O Magic are usually manufactured by any of a number of electronics plants in China. The drive will undoubtedly function in your G4, but it may not respond to booting with the C key depressed or boot the computer after having been designated as the startup disk. I tried a Memorex (LG-manufactured) DVD±RW drive in a B&W G3 (Panther), and even with the PatchBurn profile, the only way to force it to boot from a bootable CD/DVD disk was to immediately close the tray, after it would spin up/down at startup and eject the disk. I removed that drive and installed a Pioneer DVR±RW drive like this one in black or beige. The Pioneer burner boots the computer without the extra persuasion. Tiger is more forgiving of a third-party drive, than the previous OS X versions. As for the LightScribe function, you'll probably need to look for third-party, Mac-compatible labeling software.

  • Dual layer DVD drive

I installed a Dual Layer +R drive into my powermac G4 dual 1.25Ghz. I have tiger 10.4.11. System info recognises the drives a DL + R. However although iDVI 501 is said to burn to DL when i go into project the DL 8GB option is not there, and on importing media it shows the single layer 4GB capacity. Does anyone know why this is?

Burn DVDs up to 20X, DVD-DL (8.5GB per Disc) 12X,
CDs 40X, (DVD-RAM READ ONLY, no burn)

Would have thought 10.4.11 supported the drive and DL burning.
If you insert a blank DL disk in the Finder (make sure your System Pref for handling blank DVD says "Ask me what to do"), you should get a pop-up asking you what to do (!!).
Choose Open Finder, and give it a name if you want.
You should now have a disc icon on the desktop and be able to drag files and folder onto it, up to the capacity - but you don't have to do this, just perform a Get Info on it and check capacity.
This will confirm if 10.4.11 offers native support for DL.
Without burning, select the disc icon and right click - Eject. It'll ask you to confirm, choose Eject again.
    I don't know iDVI 501, did you mean iDVD 5 ?
    I use Toast (now v7) which will burn everything, even back in 10.3.9;

  • Will iTunes recognize dual layer DVDs/drives for backing up purchases?

If I have a dual layer dvd in a drive that supports dual layer burning, will itunes be able to use it to its fullest capacity?

    DaddyPaycheck,
Just after i posted my message i thought i'd pop in a DL DVD in the drive, open Toast and see again what Toast would do.
Lo and behold, i check disk capacity in Toast and it shows the full 8GB. So i'm currently copying a 6GB DV file to the DL DVD ... so far so good. I want to see if it completes the task this time without errors.
I'll know within 15 minutes whether it worked. Holding my breath ....

  • DVD Drive Recommendations

After many frustrating attempts to install my Logic Express 7, i have finally come to the realization that i need to purchase a DVD Drive before i can install it.
I was wondering if anyone had any good recommendations for a inexpensive drive that is dependable and will get the job done, but like i said, affordable. Im new to Mac cpu's so i dont know if i have to buy a dvd drive specifically for macs or if any will work or anything like that.
    thanks for the help,
    roger.

    Roger go here:
    www.xlr8yourmac.com
Check for compatibility, it's important that you make sure the drive will allow you to boot from CD. Some won't and if you get one that won't then installing new OS's or fixing stuff if stuff may go wrong, then you will NEED to boot from CD.
They always have really good up to date info on which drives will work well with your mac.
While you're buying one you may as well see if you can get a burning drive too, make it more of an upgrade. You can get Dual Layer DVD burners pretty cheap, and fast. Again make sure they will be compatible as some aren't supported by iLife apps.

Hello everyone--Could anyone recommend to me, or point me to a link with a list of, mac-compatible external dvd drives that will work with idvd? Thanks in advance!

  • Need External FW CD/DVD Drive Recommendations

Moving my mac into a dedicated 'machine room' that will make accessing the internal DVD drive impractical. Would like recommendations for a reliable external FW equivalent DVD Drive to use in its place.
    Cheers!

I like the ones made by http://www.macsales.com/
They support all of Apple's applications, unlike some of the other drives in the market.
You may find others that do on http://www.xlr8yourmac.com/

  • DVD Drive Recommendation

    Hi,
I'm about to order an inclosure (w/Oxford 911) from dealsonic.com and while I'm at it I was thinking internal dvd drive also. Will any of their drives work with my Beige? See link below. I plan to upgrade the processor early in 2006 if I can find a good Zif 1ghz deal, so if this'll be an issue with the drive I'll hold off.
    http://www.dealsonic.com/cdcdrwdvd.html
If I can write dvd's on this machine that'll be a plus, but not necessary I atleast want to read them, yet definately want to write to CD/CDRW.
Or am I better off with another dealer altogether?
    Thanks for any help,
    Tony

i bought a Pioneer DVR-110D from a place that sells pc stuff for $42 with shipping i also was givin a pioneercdr extention that enable's burning with the built in burn support and itunes in OS 9.2.2 and used patchburn for the version of OS X i have wich is OS X 10.2 the drive works flawlesy in OS X and burns great with cdr/rw's and dvd - + r/rw and burns great with the extention i was givin for OS 9.2.2 it will burn dc-r/rw dvd + - r/rw fine and burns with iTunes and the built in burn support in OS 9.2.2 but there is a catch if useing OS 9.2.2 when the hdd fals asleep and you wake it up it freezes and if you put the system to sleep useing the KB and wake it up it freezes just set the energy saver no to allow the HDD fall asleep this only happens under OS 9.2.2 . everything works fine in OS X

  • Replacement DVD Drive Recommendations

I have a G4 Quicksilver 2002 (933mhz). I recently upgraded to 10.5.x and iLife 08. Along the way I have had many problems with the installs etc. Also having problems burning DVDs. The process consistently quits at about 80%.
After reading a few posts here it sounds as though my DVR-104 may be getting old. Will either the Pioneer DVR 112 or DVR 115 drives work? Are there other drives that will work better? It sounds like my G4 may limit the max write speed so I wouldn't need the fastest drive if it costs more.
Please advise, and let me know which replacement drives have worked in your G4s.
    Thanks,
    ks

I have the Pioneer 112D in my Quicksilver and it works fine. I haven't tried booting from a DVD yet (one of the nice things about having a Firewire drive) but it is reputed to be bootable.

  • DVD Dual-Layer Drives Recommendations

I am looking to get a Dual Layer DVD drive.
Does anybody have a good recommendation? Internal? or External?
Oh by the way, I am still using DVD SP2, do I need to upgrade?
    Thanks
    Paul

I am under the impression that even Toast 7 will not read the dual layer break point set by DVDSP in either a VIDEO_TS or a disc image. Believe me, I would love to find out that I'm wrong on this. This ability alone would be worth the price of the upgrade for me (I'm still using Toast 6).
Someone asked a question specifically about this either late last week or early this week in this forum, and I believe it went unanswered.
This recent post on the CreativeCow was the closest answer I could find: http://forums.creativecow.net/cgi-bin/newreadpost.cgi?univpostid=859311&forumid=155&postid=859517&pview=t
I have not used Discribe, so I can't speak for its abilities. Its website isn't very helpful in this regard.
Hopefully someone who has firsthand experience trying this will post a reply.

  • Burning to a dual layer DVD

    Hello,
I've just finished a project that I want to take to a facility to have copies made. I've been told in the past that using a DVD-R can create problems with the copies when used in certain DVD players. I'm running DVD SP2 and I can't seem to get the program to accept anything but a DVD-R. Is this a preferences issue or should I take the actual Video and Audio TS and burn it straight to the dual layer DVD? Would appreciate any help?
    John
    PowerMac G4   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

It could be a hardware and/or software problem.
As far as Dual-Layer disks go ... I don't think they were around in the DVDSP 2 days... that's too long ago for me to know (without searching, and searching is your friend in this case).
Also your G4 might only have a DVD-R drive and that might be why DVD SP is only accepting DVD-R's. You most likely don't even have a Dual-Layer DVD drive unless you installed one later on in your G4.
How large is the Video_TS folder? You'd only need to burn it to a Dual Layer if it's >4.7gigs and even if it is you need to create a Dual-Layer break point in DVDSP to tell the disk when to switch over to the other layer on the disk. Or if it's just over 4.7 gigs (approx.) you can try and re-compress it and see if you can fit it onto one disk (which may be better for compatability issues, something you seem to be concerned about) - you may end up having more problems w/ Dual-Layers and players compared to DVD-R's and players.
    Good Luck

  • DVD drive compatability

The existing factory DVD drive in my G4 tower has failed & I need to replace it. I've been warned that most drives do not work reliably with iAPPS (iDVD5). I also use Toast 6.1.1 and DVD Studio Pro 3.0.2 (yes, all 3 for different purposes). I'm looking for stability and reliability at a fair price in a dual layer DVD drive. Comments/advice greatly appreciated.
    thanks
    Douglas

    Gary,
I remember you e-mailing me to help me install the 109 (the face plate thing),
    Oh yes.
I'm surprised that you didn't install both internally... I'd suggest seeking Verbatim DVD-R and try the 109. TDK and Memorex have bad track records here. I haven't "sprayed" this here lately, so here goes:
My reliable DVD-Rs have been: Apple 4X (Maxell ID), Verbatim 4X, RiTek 4X, RiData 8X white inkjet printable, and PioData 8X white inkjet printable. The RiData and PioData check out to be RiTek-made.
Verbatim is reliable and can be found in many stores in the USA. They even make a special grade for medical records.
You can buy the RiTek, RiData, and PioData at:
    http://www.shop4tech.com/
Verbatim may be available in your neighborhood store or:
    http://www.taperesources.com/
Apple brand can be purchased from the Apple online store.
You can check the manufacturer's ID by using DVD Media Inspector: http://homepage.mac.com/raktajino/dvdmediainspector/dvdmediainspector.html
You could wade through this: http://www.videohelp.com/dvdmedia
From that database: Five brands and who actually manufactures the DVDs:
TDK = TDK, RITEKG04, RICOHJPN, MXL, CMC, MCC
Memorex = CMC, RICOHJPN, PRODISC, INFODISC
Imation = CMC, MCC, Ritek, Prodisc
    Sony = MCC 01RG20, Sony04D1, TYG01
    Fuji = FUJIFILM02..4X, FUJIFILM03..8X, ProdiscF01..8x, ProdiscS03..4x, PVC001001..2x, RITEKG03..1x, TAIYOYUDEN..2x, TYG01..4x, TYG02..8x
This can result in "mixed" experiences...
My friend used TDK on his Mac and it wouldn't play in his 5 year old Sony DVD player. All of mine play OK in his "antique" Sony. Update: He finally gave up on that antique and bought a Sony DVPNS775V http://ww1.onecall.com/PID_22332.htm which also plays double-layer DVD+R.

  • Mac Pro DVD Drive Weirdness

    Here's my problem:
I have a Mac Pro (Dual-Core), and the DVD drive is becoming increasingly flaky. Any DVD Video I burn from the internal drive from DVD Studio Pro projects to client MP4 files (I use either Toast Titanium 8 or 10) will play on any other computer (Windows or Mac) and even on cheap set-top DVD players, but won't play back on my drive. Mass-produced DVD, CD, and even CD-R media work fine. I've been using DVD+R media for about 3 years with no issues before now.
I've cleaned the lens with a Q-tip and 99% isopropyl alcohol, I've reset all the connections, tried different media (including Taiyo Yuden) and different burn speeds, and all I get is either  "blank disc" or "Unreadable Disc" dialogs when I insert the disc after burning. Did I mention that this is pretty embarassing in front of clients?
So, before I use my drive for target practice, I'd like to know if anyone can recommend any kind of process that might be causing this (repairing permissions, trashing prefs, etc.). If the drive is end-of-life, fine--I just want to know one way or the other.
As usual, thanks in advance for any and all helpful info...
    <Edited by Host>

Cleaner discs are so cheap, it is definitely worth a shot.
If no joy, look at OWC/macsales for a reasonably priced IDE/ATA drive that works in your Mac.

  • Compatable DVD Drive w/DVD Studio Pro 4

Does anyone have a list of compatable dual layer dvd drives that DVD Studio Pro 4 supports. I have a Pioneer DVD-RW DVR-111D. And my DVD SP 4 doesn't recognize it when I try to format/build/burn a dvd. Anyone got any info on this problem.
(I am able to burn dvds with Toast, so my Mac recognizes it, but just not Studio Pro 4.)

Update to Tiger, and it shouldn't be a problem.
10.2 is nearly three OS version old.
    Otherwise try patchburn.de

  • Please recommend a dual layer dvd writer drive...

For my Dual 2.0 GHz G5.
Looking for something reliable, fast, cheap and will write dual-layer dvds as well as all the other usual stuff.
    Thank you

    Hi Red Havoc.
I've got the same machine and I fitted a Pioneer DVR - 115D and it runs fine. You have to play a bit with the height of the screws to get it to fit snugly. I couldn't use the black knurled screws on the original drive cos it rides too high with them and the tray gets caught on the edge of the aperture. I think I just used some long hard drive screws in the end. It' quite straightforward.
There's a bloke on eBay who is doing them for about 25 quid at the mo.
I think any Pioneer optical drive will fit plug and play as they supply all the Apple originals anyway.
    Good luck,
    L2K8
