Dual Quad 2.26 vs Quad 2.93

Hi all - be greatful if someone could settle something for me.
We want to buy a Mac Pro which is good enough to do Cinema 4D/Photoshop work on (and at a good speed).
I have been advised by an apple store to buy a Mac Pro Quad 2.93 over a Dual Quad 2.26 - does this sound right. In my mind surely 8 cores running at 2.26 will be able to crunch numbers faster than 4 cores at 2.93?? Obviously i'm talking only in the case here of such applications which can take advantage of multi-processors simultaneously such as photoshop and cinema 4D - i understand that an app that can't do this will use only one processor core and so the 2.93 machine will run these apps faster than the 2.26 version. It's more the multi-processor capable apps i'm concentrating on.
Thanks

Bro I will tell you to get the 2.26*2 8 core. I just returned the 2.93 Quad core. I personally felt that the 8 core was a better machine all around because of the additional cores. Having those additional cores will make you forget about the 2.26 clock speeds. I use it for FC and LGP and I noticed the difference on both machines. I ran the 64bit geekbench scores on both machines and on the 2.93 quad core with 6GB or ram the score came in at 10355 but when I ran the 2*2.26 8 core I got a 13698 with 8GB of ram installed. Remember you can install up to 32GB of ram on the 8 core but only 16GB on the quad core per Apple website and Apple retail store geniuses. Plus if you are trying to future proof yourself the 8 core would be better but either system you can not go wrong!

  • Can I install Windows 7 64-bit on my mid-2007 dual quad core "Clovertown"?

    Hi all,
I want dearly to install Windows 7 64-bit on my MacPro, but the only online compatibility information says bootcamp 3.1 for 64-bit works with "early 2008" Macs and not "mid-2006" Macs. I'm stuck in between, for I purchased a mid-2007 MacPro with dual quad core Clovertown processors, which are 64-bit. I'm unsure though if I will run into problems trying to use Bootcamp 3.1 in this case (I have Snow Leopard as well). I've called Apple support several times and they basically say they are not sure, but don't see why it wouldn't work. Any thoughts from the group?
    Cheers,
    Ben

  • Mac Pro Dual Quad Core won't boot OS/X, but plays fine with Linux/Windows

I've got a Mac Pro Dual Quad Core won't boot OS/X, but plays fine with Linux/Windows. I've tried all of the following initial tests as suggested on forums:
    -Ram swaps
-Alternating video card in PCIe slots
    -Trying alternate video card
    -resetting pram and smc
-Multiple tests with memtest86+ over 26hrs and no failed ram
-Multiple tests (8-12 cycles) with apple HW diagnostics and no problems
-Firmware is approved firmware for early 2008 model...no new updates.
Gentoo livecd works fine and I even installed to hard drive and it boots fine with it. In addition to above tests I also ran a linux stress test putting all 8 cores at a load of 22 for 2.5hrs with no problems.
Memtest86+ for 24hrs+ yields no problems.
    Where problems occur:
Booting off hard drive, DVD or firewire yields an immediate curtain of death and booting off a new snow leopard DVD dies about 25% into the install.
Looking at error log and a quick dmesg shows "Package 0 didn't get an HPET" and complains about AppleIntelCPUPowerManagement.kext. Google turns up illegal uses of this, so doesn't apply to my use case.
I'm a bit stumped since all was working well until one day it was non-stop curtains of death and can't get them to go away.
A logic board replacement at $1100 is not a feasible option for something that works on linux and windows, but not OS/X, is a bit disappointing and somewhat surprising.
Thanks for your help and advice.
    Regards,
    Marcos

Someone here once thought they knew EFI and Open Firmware a little, and used some commands from OF library that an Intel EFI Apple system didn't like. New logicboard.
Of course to run or boot OS X and see video you need EFI based card. The presence of some PC cards can block OS X from booting.
The fact you get part way through SL DVD, pull all the drives, put in a new drive and format it from SL DVD.
Most of the things you tried are what are more common with PC hardware. Including where people have tried and failed to install OS X on unsupported hardware.
I suppose it is possible something tried and failed to modify the Mac's firmware.
If you have Windows running, and you have WD drives, WD just posted new Lifeguard utility which is what I use to do a good job of stripping a drive down and recertify it for reuse, works wonders. Maybe same for other makes with vendor utility.

  • VISTA Support for Multiple Dual Quad Core Processors

Sorry if I missed this in my search.
Does Windows Vista Home Basic support dual quad core processors?
    Windows Help & Support:
Under System, you can view the processor type and speed, as well as the number of processors installed, if your computer uses multiple processors.
Yet I see no mention of multiple processors there -- what am I missing?

    Hi -g,
all Windows Home versions (XP and Vista) only support one physical prcossor with multiple Cores.
Windows Professional versions (XP Professional and Vista Business+Ultimate) support two physical processor with multiple Cores each.

  • ATSServer CPU @ 200%  LOCKS-UP Mac Pro dual quad-core desktop

My dual quad core running Mac OS X 10.5.5 locks-up frequently at boot.
Required hard (destructive) reboot, until I figured out workaround
described below. Apple really needs to fix this as a high priority.
Symptom: Desktop freezes and the system becomes unusable.
Usually occurs when booting the system, but can happen
    at other times spontaneously.
When it occurs during boot (after desktop first appears, usually
as task bar is starting to populate), the wedging is so bad that
    applications are effectively 'suspended' mid-launch.
Icons and menu and mouse buttons and keyboard completely unresponsive.
Usually just a spinning beach ball that tracks with the mouse is present.
    Attempts to resolve (both failed):
    1. Did a fresh install of Mac OS X (with data transfer) and upgraded,
which brought system to 10.5.5. (Problem appeared immediately
    on fresh installed system).
    2. Totally re-indexed Spotlight and de-selected option to not index
    PDF documents.
    Workaround:
    1. Enable 'ssh' logins and root user.
    2. Login via 'ssh' from remote system, while Mac Pro desktop frozen.
    3. Become super user in 'ssh' session.
    4. Find ATSServer with 'ps -ef' or 'top' command.
    5. Terminate ATSServer with 'kill -9'
    6. Desktop on Mac Pro immediately unwedges and applications
that hung during start-up finish launching.
    /var/log/system.log (many messages like this):
    System/Library/Frameworks/ApplicationServices.framework/Frameworks/ATS.framework /Support/ATSServer[241]: FOExceptionMainHandler caught a fatal exception at 0x96028036
    Safari[151]: GCGetStrikeMetrics failed: error 5.
    Plea from customer:
Apple: PLEASE post an update to fix this very soon.
If anyone has clear instructions on what I can do to fix properly until
Apple comes up with a real fix, for example, caches to clear,
how to identify a faulty file, or quarantine a faulty faunt,
or any other diagnostics, please feel free to reply.
My machine was already in the shop for five weeks recently for repair,
and I can't afford down time, because I'm mid-project right now,
and it will be a HUGE setback to have to bring my machine into the
shop again for another 'n' days.

I'm also seeing this problem on my MacBook with 10.5.5. After killing ATSServer via ssh, I looked in the Console, and found these console messages which occurred when the GUI locked up:
10/18/08 12:44:03 PM com.apple.ATSServer[2554] Notice ATSServer(2554,0xa076afa0) malloc: * error for object 0x83ac00: incorrect checksum for freed object - object was probably modified after being freed.
10/18/08 12:44:03 PM com.apple.ATSServer[2554] Notice * set a breakpoint in mallocerrorbreak to debug
The problem seems to happen whenever I mount a certain remote shared volume (AppleShare) from my old desktop computer (G4 Dual 450 running 10.4.11). I guess it could be that ATSServer is choking when trying to generate QuickLook previews for some document on the shared volume...

  • Installing Panther 10.5 from a dual quad 3.2 tower on Macbook Pro 2.16

Sorry for my ignorance, but I don't want to take a chance of creating issues with my laptop.
I have been doing on location editing with my Macbook Pro 2.16 (with the Intel Chip), that is running on Tiger 10.4, Final Cut Studio 1.
I recently purchased a 3.2 dual Quad tower which shipped with Leopard 10.5, and have upgraded to Final Cut Studio 2.
I want to get the laptop on the same OS and FC Studio version so I can move projects between computers on external hard drives. The tower and laptop are not linked via a network and never will be.
Can I just install the Leopard 10.5 Disk that shipped with the new tower on the Macbook Pro 2.16?
I have heard that the install disk's that come with the computers are specific to that computer.
Can I then install the new upgrade of FC Studio 2 on the MacBook Pro 2.16?
Or will I experience complications that would have been avoided if I had just purchased another copy of the Panther 10.5 OS?
Thanks for any help in trying to avoid issues in the future...
    Bob
    <Edited by Moderator>

To (slightly) expand on what David told you in the other thread ...
    1. The OSX install disks shipped as OEM with computers are not compatible with another model.
    2. One OSX license, one computer.
    3. As David already noted, a laptop and a desktop can share a FCP license as long as you do not use them simultaneously.
    Cheers,

  • Will the single or dual quad be right?

Does some have experience to advise me, which model, the single or dual quad "new" Mac Pro will deliver better results for editing images in Photoshop, Lightroom, Capture NX etc. And how much ram is a minimum for same with the new DDR3 type? Also, I do part time video editing (Final Cut Express). Thanks.

The cpu is smarter than that, and smarter than we are. A lot of things are going on below the surface, and in less than a nono-second is even a stretch in time, and changes. A core doesn't shutdown.
I suggest you actually dig into the technical papers and articles on Nehalem if you want to understand it more thoroughly. I've read that ARS article three times and still get something new with each read. And there are other articles. I feel like 2008 was just waiting and researching the sucessor to Penryn class (Harpertown).
The specials are just that, and they get 'hand tuned' and physically booted before they go out the door and usually have above the base spec listed.
I am not in favor of bleeding edge. Not until there has been one firmware update and one OS patch and time for 3-4 months minimum to flush out problems that surface. Some are still hoping the next OS update fixes issues with Nvidia 8800GT a year after it came out (and yes, drivers take a year of tweaking, Vista has had two years and apps/games and drivers are an ongoing experiment).

  • Dual Quad With CS3

I'm building a duel quad core for photoshop and premire editing. My question is about a scratch disk. Will I see better speed if I get a 74 gig Rapton WD for the scratch drive? I have a Sata 160 as the OS and program drive and three 320 gig Sata WDs as storage drives. I was thinking af the Raptor as a scratch. And is anyone out there using Photoshop with a quad or dual quads? Thanks

If you have a Raptor, you really don't need to worry about keeping the Photoshop scratch files and system paging files on different volumes -- especially if you have enough RAM that paging files aren't going to be used much. If you have several GB of RAM, there will be only rare swapping to disk. The recommendation (not requirement) that the scratch and paging files be on different volumes is based on the assumption that the paging file will often be used and will be a significant slowing factor, which is not necessarily a valid assumption when one has sufficient RAM and a fast hard drive.
I have 4 GB of RAM in Windows XP -- used to use the /3GB switch but it wasn't compatible with some other software, so I only have 2 GB available in apps. I used to have the Windows pagefile and the Photoshop scratch on C:, my 74 GB Raptor. Most apps are on D: and the photos are on E: (both are 7200 rpm Caviar drives). I never ran into any problems due to the pagefile and scratch file attempting to write simultaneously, because the pagefile rarely had to write. I've recently moved the scratch file to D: (with E: as overflow) simply because the C: drive lacked sufficient space. No noticeable change has resulted.

  • FCP WITH DUAL QUAD MAC - PROGRAM NOT FAST ENOUGH

Hello, could anyone tell me the reason my new mac "Dual Quad (8 processors) 3.0 w/16gb or ram is not even blinking when I render projects in FCP/Motion? The processors are hardly working and I don't see much difference in overall speed from my previous mac or even my macbook pro. Is there reason the software isn't utilizing the full potential of this mac?

Well, a ram disk treats ram as though it is swappable memory exactly like virtual memory space on the system hard drive. The only difference is the RAM is orders of magnitude faster.
Back in the early PC days there was the 128k (or something like that) memory limit. To get around this all sorts of memory extender programs were written (QEMM was the best known). iirc they worked by simply swapping memory blocks from the base space to a higher (extended) space. To the hardware there was only the base amount. Ah, the bad memories flood back ...

    Hi there,
If you purchased FaceTime from the Mac App Store, the first thing that I would recommend is removing and reinstalling the application. Take a look at the articles below for more information.

  • XServe dual quad core max power consumption

What can I expect to be the max power consumption of a dual quad-core XServe?
I have four new XServes that I administer in four separate locations and I need to know what Apple recommends for an Uninterrupted Power Supply (UPS) per server.
Right now, I have a 500VA one that I've had on hand at least one site. However, I've noticed that this one, eventhough the UPS has a new battery in it, does not support an XServe -- ie, when I test it, the XServe shuts down abruptly. My guess is that 500VA is inadequate.

What Apple might recommend and what might work in your environment, I do not know.
The APC SmartUPS 1500 works reasonably well for an Xserve and its usual accretion of giblets and accouterments, and Mac OS X Server automatically recognizes this device via its USB connection.
And one thing I've discovered that's not widely listed. Get yourself some short power cords. A handful of appropriately-rated power extension cords (of about one foot in length) makes most UPS products far easier to deal with. These cords are a few dollars each from various vendors, and very useful.

  • Compile packages yourself with dual/quad core

I'm compiling some packages and svn myself and I'm wondering, why 'make' only use one of the 4 cores on the cpu ? is there som way to make it use all four ? I'd assume compiling would be a lot faster.

-j5 on a Core 2 Duo is fine, while -j10 on a Quad works Well, at least according to some ricers.
-j1, for a case example, is required for compiling anything VST-related.
When you come across a build that fails with regards to job servers, take a look at the default makefile. Few will tell you that > make=-jn will not work. This was discussed to a little extent here.

  • Dual Quad Core - wake from sleep problems

I have a brand new Quad core 2.8 ATI Radeon, and have experienced both wake from sleep problems within the first week of ownership, more than once. Namely, restart on wake, and/or corrupt graphics-frozen on wake. I haven't called AppleCare, but my question is is it worth it? Is it thought to be a software problem, or a hardware issue? I don't want to go to a lot of trouble if any replacement exhibits the same problem (or worse), but at the same time I feel it is a real issue and should be dealt with under guarantee. What should I do? Suggestions please...

There's lots of anecdotal data in the forum here and elsewhere, but the bottom line so far is that nobody knows except perhaps the Apple folks that are working on it.
No one that I've seen posting has identified even a common thread...some machines have the reboot from sleep problem, some have graphics issues, some have both (I'm in the first camp...reboot from wake but no (touch wood) graphic issues.
It wouldn't hurt to call Apple and get your issues on record; it helps them know the extent of the problem.
Your warranty is for a year so it's not immediate, especially since there doesn't seem to be a lasting fix available. Resetting SMC and/or PRAM works for some...for a while...
Right now I'm simply not sleeping the machine (I don't normally do it anyway) and waiting for Apple to come out with a fix. My bet is on a software/firmware fix (there are reports that the problem does not happen in bootcamp/windows, which more or less rules out hardware). But that's a sort of educated guess.
People have returned the machine only to get the same...or worse. Again, I'm not rushing into that.

  • MBP core 2 duo MBP outpunching dual Quad Xeon MacPro/ATI Radeon HD4870-why?

Specifically, on the Mac Pro, in a Pro Res 422 HQ timeline, FCP generated text requires rendering in safe mode with a red bar and in unlimited RT (dynamic frame rate/quality) is showing as an orange render. On my old MBP, text plays back fine in safe mode, with a light green preview bar. Any ideas?

Just a guess but it may be a buried preference setting somewhere.
Use a preference manager to save current configurations, (re)save the project, trash the preferences on both and open the same project on both machines.
