Dual screen over HDMI

I'm running arch on my HP mini 311. It has nvidia ion graphics and I'm using the nvidia driver package. I would like to set it up to use dual screen over the hdmi port. I am having trouble getting my xorg.conf setup. I tried configuration that I thought were correct but everytime I reboot/restart x it boots into the console and I have to use nvidia-xconfig to get it back. I am kind of a newb when it comes to configuring xorg as I've always just relied on the nvidia utility.
Ideally I would like to get the second screen at  a higher resolution but failing that just getting a clone display would be fine. I mainly want to use it to watch movies with vlc. If it makes a difference I am using i3 as my wm.

+1, just run nvidia-settings and enable twinview.
As nvidia-settings --help say, you can use run nvidia-settings -l  when you start your X session to restore the screen settings. (or you can read the nvidia docs and enable twinview in xorg.conf by hand.)

  • Dual screen with HDMI and DisplayPort

    Hi all,
I have one question regarding my MSI GTX960.
Today I just received a DisplayPort>HDMI cable to connect my TV with HDMI.
So here is my configuration :
    - GPU HDMI => Primary Screen HDMI
    - GPU DisplayPort => TV HDMI
    Here is my problem :
    - When I boot the computer, the GPU DisplayPort takes priority over the GPU HDMI output which my primary screen is plugged in.
    - Unless I unplug the HDMI cable from my TV (plugged to the DisplayPort of the GPU), it won't boot on the GPU HDMI output.
I tried all DisplayPorts to see if there was some priority but with no chance.
So I'm really disappointed as even if my TV is shut down, the computer will not boot on the GPU HDMI output and I can't access my BIOS from it (unless I unplug the DisplayPort cable before booting).
Is there a way to set default port or fix this annoying issue ?
    Thanks in advance.

Thanks for your quick replies guys :D !

nope, this can't be changed its how its works
That's what I was thinking about and in fact I think it's more related to my TV as when I connect it while shut down I hear the connexion sound. It seems it is more in standby than totally shut and the GPU may have a signal from it.

The ports priority order is defined in VBIOS.
As Svet already mentioned, it cannot be changed.
Maybe having another DisplayPort for my primary screen would fix the problem ? What do you think about it ?

I think you are sailing in uncharted waters with those kind of modifications.
I am only guessing, but if you have not already done so,  do a PRAM reset and then trash your FCP preferences.

I've also notice when I start the computer up, it stays on the grey screen longer than it did when I had the original card (512 mb).
My understanding is the Mac is doing a ram/hardware test during the grey screen, if the card you added had additional memory, then it is very likely the test will take longer - but I am no hardware expert.

Cannot display the screen of my macbook on TV. OS is Lion 10.7.2. The Macbook is connected to the TV is over HDMI cable.  TV shows only the backgroud picture of the Lion OS and reacts even to mission control. Do you have any suggestions for help ?

You have the display set in Extended Desktop mode. In System Preferences>Display on the MacBook screen there should be an Arrangement tab when you have the MacBook hooked up to the TV and both screens working. When you click the Arrangement tab do you see two monitors side by side? One of them will have a Menu Bar at the top. Just click on the Menu Bar and drag it to the second monitor. That will make the second monitor your main screen. You can now use your MacBook in Clamshell Mode with a wired or Bluetooth keyboard and mouse.  http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3131 When you disconnect from the TV your Menu Bar will automatically change back to the MacBook.
Or if you want to work on the MacBook screen while showing it on a TV you can check the Mirror Display box on the lower left hand side of the Arrangement tab under the two monitors box.

  • Connecting 2560x1440 screen to a U410 over HDMI

Hi, Im a new owner of U410 IdeaPad.
I bought this machine with the intention to hook it up to a WQHD  (2560x1440) screen.
The screen I intend to get has no limitation on being fed over HDMI with this resolution (supports 1.4 HDMI).
What I have found out is that I might have a problem with the machine not supporting this resolution over HDMI.
My question is whether U410 with its dedicated Nvidia 610M (in addition to HD4000) sitting on Intels HM77 chipset will allow me to output WQHD resolution over the HDMI, or at least wether this HDMI connection is of 1.4 version.
    Thank you very much.

    Thanks for the reply
can you reference me to the source/s which confirm the 1.4 support (I'm a bit uptight about it since I am going to order the screen online without the option to return so I don't want to find myself owning a 27" HD-TV instead of a WQHD screen).
There is apparently an issue with HDMI and above 1080 resolutions, a few manufacturers (of both chipsets and monitors) made a bad assumption that HDMI = 1080p for the home user even though the interface can support more then that but they capped it at 1080.
    For example
    http://communities.intel.com/thread/30360
    http://forum.notebookreview.com/hardware-components-aftermarket-upgrades/633598-dell-u2711-hdmi-2560...
    - with wifi I had no problem what so ever (used both at home and in public). its manufacture date 06/06/12

  • Any one help me with dual screen?

I am trying to get my LCD monitor work, which is plugged in VGA.
However, when i using "xrandr --output VGA --auto" to set it up, i get this failure "xrandr: cannot find crtc for output VGA"
i am using intel graphic card, and the result of "xrandr -q --verbose" is as follows,

how many monitors do you want to plugin? three? like damjan said, not sure if that works at all.
or are the hdmi outputs idle and you're just trying to plug in a second screen?
whats the exact problem? no output on that screen at all? or mirroring the internal one? in that case, try
    xrandr --output VGA --right-of LVDS
    (or left-of...)
can you plug that monitor in with hdmi? (adapter/etc) you might try that as well, maybe just the vga fails.
wow.. thank you konni... and thank damjan
i turned off HDMI-1, then I could get VGA work!
now i have dual screens, pretty cool.

  • X crashes on startup with AMD dual screen setup

Ever since I bought my AMD Kaveri A10-7850K at the end of January last year I've been having trouble getting a dual screen setup to work properly. Initially I put this down to poor beta drivers, and as I had far too much going on to investigate the issue further beyond some fiddling with xorg.conf, I bought an AMD A4-4000 as a temporary solution while waiting for the Catalyst drivers to catch up.
In June last year I decided to give my A10-7850K another go, assuming that the Catalyst driver would have matured enough in the meantime to cater for the Kaveri processors. Unfortunately the situation was still the same, and I I didn't have the time nor want to be swapping processors all constantly to I decided to just give up on a dual monitor setup for the time being.
After many years of using two screens, however, it is very hard to get used to a single monitor again, and as January is a quiet month for me I decided today to have another at getting it to work properly.
    My setup is as follows:
an LG LG 23EA63V connected via HDMI as my main monitor at 1920x1080
a Viewsonic VP-171b connected via DVI as my secondary monitor at 1280x1024
    AMD A10-7850K APU
Catalyst 14.12-1 drivers installed from Vi0l0's repo
Xorg 1.15 installed from Vi0l0's repo
    KDE 4.14.3 using kwin
    KDM is launched using kdm.service
    KMS disabled via nomodeset
fglrx module loaded on boot via cat /etc/modules-load.d/catalyst.conf
    Tear free rendering enabled
After plugging in my secondary monitor configuring it in amdcccle to be to the right of my primary moniotor in multi-display desktop mode, everything works correctly. This even works in my preferred setup where the secondary monitor is rotated into portrait mode, although I currently have not configured rotation so as to not overcomplicate the troubleshooting.
Upon rebooting, however, X hangs with a static white cursor in the top left hand of both screens, which after a while disappears completely. I then have to unplug the secondary (DVI) monitor and hard reset the PC before I can boot into my desktop again. The bizarre thing is though that when I plug in my secondary monitor again and configure it as desired, either through amdcccle or krandr, everything works perfectly again.
This is, of course, an incredibly cumbersome way of working, especially when most of the time I forget to disconnect my DVI monitor prior to turning on my PC, hence me just making do with a single monitor for the past 7 months.
I did a complete fresh install of Catalyst yesterday (uninstall drivers, delete remaining config files, reinstall drivers from repo), to no avail.
Output from xrandr after rebooting with the secondary monitor disconnected:

  • Using Keynote with Podcast Capture and Dual Screens

    Hi everyone,
We are trying to use a dual screen setup to record some Keynote presentations using Podcast Capture (i.e Dual mode, with the Keynote presentation in one screen and the presenter in the other).
The problem we are having is that when in full screen mode, Keynote takes control of both displays, thus stopping the Podcast application from being displayed. Even if we switch off the Presenter Display on the second screen, the second screen turns black.
I know we can start and stop recording with hotkeys, but we would prefer to be able to see the Capture app in one window with the presentation full screen in the other.
Perhaps this is just an oversight on Apple's part, but I'm finding it hard to believe its not possible. If anyone else has a workaround then please share.
    Thanks.

Other applications are not visible when Keynote is playing back.  Keynote takes over control of the graphics system when playing back presentations to enable Keynote to display properly.
When I play back Keynote and I want to look at a second application, I use a second Mac.

  • MSI gtx 570 twin frozr III - Dual Screen Windowed mode issues

Ok, so... I was running a solo monitor 1440x900 resolution, i recently purchased a brand new asus 24 inch 1900x1080 monitor. Basically what is happening is when i play WoW or Battlefield 3 in windowed mode on the 1080p monitor the colors are not perfect. When i go full-screen on the new monitor no issues, but that is not what i want to have to live with. When i say the colors are not perfect what i mean is, for example when i look @ the sky instead of being a smooth transition or blend from one shade of the sky to the next it is bars or stripes of each shade as if i am looking at the sky in 8 bit color instead of 32 bit color. Another thing to note is that when i login to windows 7 the blue screen where i input the password has the same effect. The 1440x900 monitor is running everything just fine. the only issue is with the 1080p monitor.
I am using DVI cabling for both, and have swapped them around to see if that was the issue, and sadly it is not. I am running the updated gpu driver, which i uninstalled and re-downloaded and installed again tonight.
When i use the HDMI cable,  that fixes the issue but i need the HDMI for my 42 inch tv.
Also in windows, just to cover my bases with this post, i have the native resolutions properly configured, as well as in the game for the given monitor it is being played on.
Anyone know of a fix for this?
    i7 2600k
    asus PBZ68-v Pro/Gen3
    Msi gtx 570
    Samsung syncmaster 953bw (1440x900)
    Asus VS248 (1900x1080)
I am more than happy to re-explain anything that may not be as descriptive or clear to you just let me know!
    EDIT!
When i run the 24 inch 1080p new monitor as my only monitor on the system, everything runs perfectly...
    Edit #2
Ok so i have pin pointed a possible cause
This msi gtx 570 struggles with operating multiple displays with different resolutions, while dual screening with my 1080p television and the 1080p display, everything runs as expected. Having to also render a 1440x900 display is probably the reason i am having the graphic issues. Is there any type of utility, setting, or other fix to this type issue? also this gpu is certainly less than 2 weeks since i purchased i could get a different card to remedy this... any suggestion? if you suggest a different card can you say so with certainty that it will work properly under the condition in which 2 resolutions will be required?

Ok, the problem is fixed and Svet i skipped a step or two. I installed the new driver with the clean install to save time for an initial attempt. What is interesting is that with the Geforce driver, only one 1920x1080 resolution was available
The msi driver gave me 2 options, 1920x1080 and 1920x1080 (native). The latter resolution fixed the issue for whatever reason.
The solution to this problem is so easy, when i purchased battlefield 3 it prompted me to download the geforce.com driver and i did not think anything of it at the time, lesson learned.

  • Envy M6 (c2l95ua#ABL) - Windows 8 - Turn on second display (TV over HDMI) as computer wakes

I want my TV (used as a second display over HDMI) to turn on automatically as the laptop turns on or resumes from sleep/hibernation.  (As does a monitor on a desktop PC or the built-in screen on a laptop)
CEC (Consumer Electronics Control) is supposed to allow to turn on TV over HDMI.
The television is CEC compatible and has CEC option turned on.  Theres also an option called "Allow CEC compatible devices to turn on television", which is turned on.
Can this laptop turn on a TV through HDMI, with or without CEC?
    How?
    Thanks a lot.

    Thanks for the reply.
Is the T.V. entering standby or powering off after a certain amount of time?
The TV is in what the manufacturer calls standby-mode.
    http://www.insigniaproducts.com/products/televisions/NS-39E340A13.html
    What model is the T.V.?
    http://www.insigniaproducts.com/products/televisions/NS-39E340A13.html
TheT.V. should wake from standby upon receiving a signal from the notebook.
    I agree.  It should.
To the best of my knowledge, the notebook will not turn the T.V. on from a powered off state.  At least, I haven't found any indication that this model will.
Anyone else has a solution? There could be a way to turn it on from off state if HDMI CEC is implemented by HP.
    Or another way..?

  • Dual-screen with Mac mini 2012 ?

    Hi,
I'd like to set-up a dual-screen on a Mac mini (2012), is it possible to use 2 HDMI monitors (1 to the HDMI output and the other to the Thunderbolt output with a HDMI adapter) ?
    Thanks,
    Sylvain

Yes, that's perfectly doable. that's the way mine are set up.

  • 720p over HDMI - black bar issues

    Hi all.
I've got a 1st gen V-box, which worked great until about 9 months ago.  I had been happily using 720p over HDMI for about a year.  However, I suspect a software "update" around this time caused problems, as the 720p and 1080i settings are now incredibly unreliable.
Specifically, when I set the box to show HD resolutions, there are usually black bars down the left and right of the screen, cutting off those sides of the picture.  Sometimes the picture displays properly, but this is usually only temporary - after a day or two of thinking everything's sorted, the dreaded black bars reappear when starting the box up for the first time that day.  Rebooting doesn't seem to help.  The bars even overlay the menus, so it seems to be affecting everything not just live tv.  The full picture is shown when I use standard def over HDMI however.
Has anyone else experienced this and if so any ideas how to fix?

    Hello
On most platforms, I've experienced black bars at the sides, noteably lower bandwidth channels such as kids or shopping often display what you describe when using any HDMI setting in my experience.
Thre is the ability to hit the shortcuts button on the bottom right of the remote which allows you to scroll through to then stretch the image if you wish- but It doesn't always work, I'll stress again this also happens on my FREESAT box, so I don't think it's an issue generic to Vision.
    Couple of questions though,
1: Is it a Toshiba tv? (some firmware upgrades to these sets have caused numerous issues and lip synching problems.
2: have you tried a different HDMI cable? (apologies if that's blatantly obvious!)
I've not tested V.1.5 black box yet to see how this issue is there (note I don't call it a V2 box- as it's **bleep**).
Hopefully, if the rumours are true the development team will scrutinise the forums, realise these issues do indeed exist and can work towards a solution in the Freeview HD offering of whatever comes out next:

  • Problems with dual screens

I am running an iMac 3.06 GHz, 4 GB RAM, 512 VRAM. I also use an external monitor connected via HDMI. When I run Color using dual screens the picture shows almost only black, and what isn't black is so saturated I can barely discern what the picture is. Does anyone know why this is happening and/or how I can fix it?

I'm not sure Color works properly with monitors connected in that manner. Color isn't accurate without proper monitoring, and you can't get proper monitoring with an iMac. By proper monitoring I mean an HDTV or broadcast monitor being fed a VIDEO signal via a hardware capture card (AJA, Decklink, Matrox). You can't get capture cards to work on iMacs, therefore you cannot properly monitor a video signal.
The display in the Color interface is not accurate at all. It is just a reference to see what frame you are on. It isn't designed to be used to judge the quality of the image. It has a much higher gamma (midrange) than is seen on the external monitor.
I'm assuming the monitor you are using is being fed a converted HDMI signal...converted from the DVI or Mini Display port on the computer. Well, that is a computer signal...not a video one. There's a difference. So this setup will not work...not with Color.
    Sorry,
    Shane

  • G62-a50sf : (only) audio out over HDMI?

We have a G62-a50sf notebook at my gf's place that we'd like to use as the source for a (somewhat) audiophile audio set-up.  One possibility to get better-than-headphone-output into a good receiver AND avoid using a separate DAC would be to feed the digital audio output over HDMI to the receiver.
The question I'm hoping to get an answer to is: will this be possible while retaining video output on the laptop's own screen?
    thanks in advance,
    René

Sorry, but your Mac doesn't send sound over HDMI, only mid-2010 and later MBP's send sound (and even then some require different adapters).  Yours is a 2009 MBP, so only video will go over the HDMI cable.  You will need to run audio from the audio out to your TV or digital audio out from your optical audio out to your receiver.

  • Dual screen HP Pavillon P6-2427eb

    Hi,
I have recenty bought a HP Pavillon P6-2427eb PC.
It has a seperate video card with a DVI  + HDMI connection.
I want to use dual screen, but when I connect both screens it doesn't work.
The first screen is a fujutsi siemens screen wich is connected on the DVI connecter.
The second one is a HP 23" screen with Displayport connection (also has DVI + VGA) but I get no signal on it.
When I connect the DVI to the HP screen, this one works, but I can't get them both to work.
On the motherboard there are 2 DVI connectors, so I removed the seperate video card and connected both screens on DVI, they both work but duplicate the image.
When I look in the settings of my screens, and try to activated dual screen it says only one monitor is connected.
    Any suggestions?

Hi JumJonckers, You have an ATI graphic card right? have you installed the latest ATI driver for your graphic card?
Please have a look on your graphic card multimonitor FAQ:
