Dual Screens with Imac

Is is possible to operate an iMac 10.5.4 using two monitors? I have been doing some work in iMovie and Final cut and would like to have the ability to move things from one screen to the other.

Yes. Connect your second monitor. The screen should go blue to acknowledge the connection. Now go to System Preferences>Displays. Click on the middle tab and check off "mirroring."

  • Problem with dual screen (24" imac 2006 ver)

    hi
    i've got a 24" intel imac (2006 ver) and i've connected it using apple's mini-dvi => vga adapter to my 2nd 22" lcd monitor, a samsung 2232GW, which is set to 1680 x 1050.
however, the samsung lcd displays (when i'm using as dual screen) is quite blur and double imaged. quality is readable but very irritating. i'm also using the same monitor for my ps3 (uses the DVI side) and have no problem with any visual aspect. I've tried playing around with the settings like resolution and calibration and tuning but didn't help at all.
anyone might have any ideas and enlighten me on this issue?
    thanks

Did you get any resolution to your question? I have the Samsung monitor almost like yours, and I posted two seconds ago. I think I have a similar problem. I had been using my Samsung with my PC, and just switched to Mac. I loved my Samsung, but now ,for the first time using as a second. Hooked up to mini dvi to dvi, and reported a glow, or tinge coming around any window that I may place on the Samsung. Also, when Ilook at the background around the window I can see that the resolution is not perfect and is breaking up a little. Did you try VGA? and did it help? Curious to know

Hi, I've been trying to get a dual screen setup with two truly independent screens (not the one giant screen that xrandr gives you), but I've been having some issues.  The hardware I'm attempting this on is my macbook pro 2.1 with a 1440x900 internal display and ati x1600 mobility, and a 1680x1050 apple cinema display connected with DVI.  Here is the xorg.conf that I've come up with after a bit of tinkering.

Sorry the tabs are a little screwed up, but I think it's still easy enough to read.  When I start the xserver using this file the external monitor appears to be functioning properly, but the internal display is black.  Moving the mouse off to the right of the external display causes the cursor to appear on the internal display using the default X cursor theme.  The mouse then remains trapped on the internal monitor.  Other than displaying the cursor, the internal display seems to be non-functional.
If I comment out the Screen...1 line in the ServerLayout section I can get both monitors working with xrandr, but this causes other issues and is not what I want.  Does anybody know how I could get two real screen going?
    Thanks!

  • Dual-screen with Mac mini 2012 ?

    Hi,
I'd like to set-up a dual-screen on a Mac mini (2012), is it possible to use 2 HDMI monitors (1 to the HDMI output and the other to the Thunderbolt output with a HDMI adapter) ?
    Thanks,
    Sylvain

Yes, that's perfectly doable. that's the way mine are set up.

  • Dual screen with G5 Dual 2.0GHz witrh GeForce 6600LE

I wonder if you guys can help clear something up for me.
I'm looking at getting a G5 2.0GHz with the GeForce 6600LE graphics card. I see that it says it comes with 1 x single-link dvi, and 1 x dual-link dvi. And I have noticed that there is a size difference in the single and dual links.
I'm looking at getting the G5 and then getting a dvi LCD, then hopefully getting a second dvi LCD later for dual-screen. I just want to check before I get the machine how to achieve this.
Does the adapter that comes with the G5 go in the single or dual-link dvi port. And if I get a screen at a later stage how do I get it to plug into the dual link if my other screen is plugged into the single-link port?
Hope you guys can clear this up for me. And I hope the 2.0GHz G5 is capable of doing dual-screen.

You don't need an adapter. A single-link DVI display can plug into a dual-link DVI port. The connectors are the same. The dual-link uses some pins that are not used on the single-link connector. You can use both displays at the same time, either mirrored, or as extended desktop. The single-link port can use up to a 23" (1920 x 1200) display, the dual-link 30"(2560 x 1600).

  • Dual screen with radeon driver stopped working

I've been using the xf86-video-ati or xf86-video-radeonhd drivers on my ATI 1950Pro card with a dual screen setup on two 22" widescreen Acer monitors for the last year and all of a sudden the dual display is not working anymore. I had not changed my xorg.conf http://pastebin.ca/1409905 but here is my current Xorg log http://pastebin.ca/1409904
Right now I'm seeing "cloned" desktops on the two screens but ARandR only sees one monitor http://s288.photobucket.com/albums/ll17 … ot-1-1.png. There was an update to xf86-video-ati yesterday, but no change in my situation unfortunately. Any suggestions or solutions would be awesome. Thanks.

Using radeonhd driver, it won't let the first monitor have any resolution higher than 1024x768, but the other monitor works fine even though they are identical monitors and my xorg.conf file has full Modeline entries for both and both screen sections have the resolution set to 1680x1050.
Here is what ARandR is showing:

I just bought a Mac mini.  I have two samsung 245bw 24in screens.  What do I need to buy to have dual screens.

You will need to use the supplied HDMI to DVI Adapter for one, then for the second you will need a Mini DisplayPort to DVI Adapter - Apple Store (U.S.) plugged into the combination Thunderbolt/Mini DisplayPort.

  • Dual screen with MacBook and iBook possible?

    Hi,
I was wondering if it was possible to have the MacBook and a iBook G4 hooked up dual screen?
If so what are the things I need to make it happen?
I am doing photo editing and just got a MacBook and I need the extra screen space and I have my old iBook laying around my house and thought I could use it for extra screen space.
    Thanks for the help,

Unfortunately you can't, and there really isn't anyway to do it. You would be best of buying a cheap LCD monitor.

  • Dual Monitor with iMac?

I have a iMac from early 2009 and wanted to use it as an external monitor for my laptop which has Windows 8.1 as it's OS. So my question is without using any software such as Synergy, Air Display, etc is there anyway I can make the iMac an external monitor for my laptop. I also have boot camp set up with Windows 7 as it's OS and I'm not sure if that's any help or not making this dual monitor setup work.
I was going to buy a mini displayport to VGA adapter (iMac (Early 2009) - Technical Specifications says: "Mini DisplayPort output port with support for DVI, VGA, and dual-link DVI via adapter," so I am assuming I cannot use HDMI) and use that to connect my laptop and the iMac together. And so I was wondering if that'll work out if I'm on windows partition in boot camp or not.

Can't do it as far as I know. The mini display port on your Mac is for output only. You need a late 2009 or later iMac to do Target Display Mode Target Display Mode: Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

    See Matrox's dual display adapter:

Not sure if it works with the virtualization tools, but they would know if it does or doesn't.

  • Dual screen with HDMI and DisplayPort

    Hi all,
I have one question regarding my MSI GTX960.
Today I just received a DisplayPort>HDMI cable to connect my TV with HDMI.
So here is my configuration :
    - GPU HDMI => Primary Screen HDMI
    - GPU DisplayPort => TV HDMI
    Here is my problem :
    - When I boot the computer, the GPU DisplayPort takes priority over the GPU HDMI output which my primary screen is plugged in.
    - Unless I unplug the HDMI cable from my TV (plugged to the DisplayPort of the GPU), it won't boot on the GPU HDMI output.
I tried all DisplayPorts to see if there was some priority but with no chance.
So I'm really disappointed as even if my TV is shut down, the computer will not boot on the GPU HDMI output and I can't access my BIOS from it (unless I unplug the DisplayPort cable before booting).
Is there a way to set default port or fix this annoying issue ?
    Thanks in advance.

Thanks for your quick replies guys :D !
Quote from: Svet on 16-June-15, 00:31:54
nope, this can't be changed its how its works
That's what I was thinking about and in fact I think it's more related to my TV as when I connect it while shut down I hear the connexion sound. It seems it is more in standby than totally shut and the GPU may have a signal from it.
Quote from: RemusM on 16-June-15, 00:43:16
The ports priority order is defined in VBIOS.
As Svet already mentioned, it cannot be changed.
Maybe having another DisplayPort for my primary screen would fix the problem ? What do you think about it ?

  • Dual Screen with multiple graphics cards?

    Hi,
I have tried to utilise two screens, both to a seperate grahpics card but it does not seem to be working! Setting them as two different devices with BUS id's does not work and xrandr does not seem to be working either - it comes up that one of the screens is disconnected.
    Here is my 60-radeon.conf:
       Section "Device"
Identifier     "Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. [AMD/ATI] RS780L [Radeon 3000]"
           Driver        "radeon"
           BusID        "PCI:1:05:0"
    EndSection
       Section "Device"
Identifier    "Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. [AMD/ATI] Juniper XT [Radeon HD 6770]"
           Driver        "radeon"
           BusID        "PCI:2:00:0"
    EndSection
And here is my xrandr command:
    xrandr --output VGA-0 --auto --output DVI-0 --auto --right-of VGA-0
Any help would be greatly appreciated!

    ElKatrina wrote:the X server crashes
It's my understanding that this should never happen, and always deserves a bug report upstream at xf86-video-ati or the X.org server.
What you can first try is installing xf86-video-ati-git from AUR to see whether it's already fixed and just not in a stable release yet.
The next step would just be collecting a stack trace and posting it on https://bugs.freedesktop.org/enter_bug.cgi?product=xorg in Driver/Radeon or so (only after looking whether ther is already a similar bug of course) depending on how the stacktrace looks.
You really want a second computer and do this with ssh because a paused X server that controls the keyboard/mouse and the tty is not something you want to deal with...
So you have an ssh server running and start X normally on your computer, then at the second computer you connect with ssh and attach gdb to the xserver with "sudo gdb /usr/bin/X $(pgrep -f /usr/bin/X)" or so. That will first pause the X Server and you have to "continue" with writing "c[enter]" or so. Then you do whatever you do to make it crash and when it is crashing, gdb will pause it again. Then you can get a backtrace with "bt[enter]". That will give you a list of function calls from which libraries lead up to the crash and possibly some extra information about parameters or so. Then quit with ctrl+d or "quit" or so.
If you get stuck on a black screen on the PC with the crashing X server, try "startx" over ssh and then killing it with ctrl+c again. Starting and killing X "properly" helped at least for me when that happened.
You can get a lot more information when you recompile some thing with debug symbols. For example if you have yaourt you can use yaourt -G xf86-video-ati-git to create a directory xf86-video-ati-git and download the PKGBUILD into it.
In the PKGBUILD you can add !strip to options so it looks like "options=('!libtool' '!strip')" and in the build() function anywhere before autoreconf/make add export CFLAGS="-O0 -ggdb" (and if there is c++ code, export CXXFLAGS="-O0 -ggdb", but for xf86-video-ati and the x server there isn't I think) and then simply reinstall with "makepkg -fi"
Now if you replicate the crash with packages with such debug information you can do "bt full" in gdb. Without these debug information you will just get a lot of "No symbol table info available." but with it you can get many variable values and function parameters that can help the developers greatly (possibly).

  • MSI gtx 570 twin frozr III - Dual Screen Windowed mode issues

Ok, so... I was running a solo monitor 1440x900 resolution, i recently purchased a brand new asus 24 inch 1900x1080 monitor. Basically what is happening is when i play WoW or Battlefield 3 in windowed mode on the 1080p monitor the colors are not perfect. When i go full-screen on the new monitor no issues, but that is not what i want to have to live with. When i say the colors are not perfect what i mean is, for example when i look @ the sky instead of being a smooth transition or blend from one shade of the sky to the next it is bars or stripes of each shade as if i am looking at the sky in 8 bit color instead of 32 bit color. Another thing to note is that when i login to windows 7 the blue screen where i input the password has the same effect. The 1440x900 monitor is running everything just fine. the only issue is with the 1080p monitor.
I am using DVI cabling for both, and have swapped them around to see if that was the issue, and sadly it is not. I am running the updated gpu driver, which i uninstalled and re-downloaded and installed again tonight.
When i use the HDMI cable,  that fixes the issue but i need the HDMI for my 42 inch tv.
Also in windows, just to cover my bases with this post, i have the native resolutions properly configured, as well as in the game for the given monitor it is being played on.
Anyone know of a fix for this?
    i7 2600k
    asus PBZ68-v Pro/Gen3
    Msi gtx 570
    Samsung syncmaster 953bw (1440x900)
    Asus VS248 (1900x1080)
I am more than happy to re-explain anything that may not be as descriptive or clear to you just let me know!
    EDIT!
When i run the 24 inch 1080p new monitor as my only monitor on the system, everything runs perfectly...
    Edit #2
Ok so i have pin pointed a possible cause
This msi gtx 570 struggles with operating multiple displays with different resolutions, while dual screening with my 1080p television and the 1080p display, everything runs as expected. Having to also render a 1440x900 display is probably the reason i am having the graphic issues. Is there any type of utility, setting, or other fix to this type issue? also this gpu is certainly less than 2 weeks since i purchased i could get a different card to remedy this... any suggestion? if you suggest a different card can you say so with certainty that it will work properly under the condition in which 2 resolutions will be required?

Ok, the problem is fixed and Svet i skipped a step or two. I installed the new driver with the clean install to save time for an initial attempt. What is interesting is that with the Geforce driver, only one 1920x1080 resolution was available
The msi driver gave me 2 options, 1920x1080 and 1920x1080 (native). The latter resolution fixed the issue for whatever reason.
The solution to this problem is so easy, when i purchased battlefield 3 it prompted me to download the geforce.com driver and i did not think anything of it at the time, lesson learned.
