Dual SSD in a hp elitebook 8460p?

Hi,
Is it possible to run 2 SSD drives in a HP EliteBook 8460p? Usually it's possible to replace the DVD bay and put in a external drive instad. Are there any size limitations or will a 256GB SDD work?

  • Dual SSD

Thinking of puting dual SSD drives in my MacBook Pro (by removing the optical drive).  I'm thinking there are two configuration options...
I could STRIPE it for a super fast single volume, OR, I could put the OS on one drive, and the swap file and virtual machine (Boot Camp?) on the other drive.
Oh also thinking of a single SSD with a 1Tb drive in the optical bay.
    Thoughts?

Is there any reason you're not just going to get a 120GB SSD in the first place? [OWC has a 120GB SSD for under $300|http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/internalstorage/Mercury_Extreme_SSD_Sandforce/Solid_StatePro]. So unless you already bought the drives....
As to your actual question of whether OSX can boot from software RAID, I do not know specifically. I believe that it can, (correct me if I'm wrong) but I have never tried.
However, I would be quite concerned about booting from a RAID0 or simple spanned volume. You lose one disk, you lose all data. You'd want to be very certain about your backups. Yes, SSDs are more durable than platters, but Murphy doesn't care about such things. If it were me, I would NOT RAID the drive, but just use one for booting OSX, and the other for data. (But I'm probably more paranoid than most people. )
Me personally, I updated my 2008 MBP with a [Seagate 500GB hybrid drive|http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822148591]. I needed the capacity for virtual machines but SSDs over 200GB are not at a good price point yet. So the hybrid is what I settled on. I'm finding that the platters don't spin up that much, which implies that the MBP is reading a lot from the 4GB cache on the drive, just like it would if it were a true SSD. So it's almost like having a SSD for most things until I fire up a virtual machine. YMMV, of course.

  • MBP 2011 Dual SSD

    Hi guys,
I've just got a quick question, I'm thinking in the near future of upgrading my early 2011 15" MacBook Pro with dual SSDs. I'll definitely be getting a Samsung 512GB 840 Pro to replace my HDD but I was also thinking of getting a 960GB Crucial M500 to put in my optical drive bay. Has anyone had any experience with the Crucial SSD? And do you think this set-up is a good idea?
    Cheers!

  • Elitebook 8460P - Shutdown and USB problem

We're having a very odd problem.  When the system (HP Elitebook 8460P running Windows 7 x64 Enterprise) is online over wireless, everything works fine.  HOWEVER, 2 very odd behaviors manifest if the system is not connected to a wireless internet connection:
    - It will not shutdown.  The system will hang at "shutting down . . ." message. If the power is turned off (5 sec press on power button), it will boot up the next time saying that it was not shut down properly.
    - one of the USB 3 ports will not work (this is incredibly odd!).  Not sure how the 2 could be connected, but apparently they are!
The system is well-maintained, and shows no signs of viruses or malware.  All drivers and software are up to date, including BIOS.  If the system is connected any working wireless connections, neither problem occurs.

  • Elitebook 8460p Trackpad

I have an Elitebook 8460p, and I'm having an issue with the trackpad. I'm having issue using the scrolling feature on the trackpad. This trackpad uses gestures for scrolling (Scroll with two fingers). Most times when I try to scroll, the mouse pad is very inaccurate and will perform the wrong gesture. The most common incorrect gesture is zooming. I try to scroll down a webpage, and it zooms way in or out instead. It's very frustrating, and basically unusable.
All of my previous HP laptops had the scrolling area on the right side of the trackpad, and that always worked great. Is it possible to enable that on this laptop?
I've tried re-installing the Synaptics driver with no luck. I even had to format the computer for an unrelated problem, and the issue persists.
Any help you can provide would be much appreciated.

Aiyoooo, sorry HP. Love you dear You are DUDE.
The below link showed me how to use the horizontal and vertical scrolling. Now i am trying my level best not to use mouse and customizing myself to use only the trackpad.

  • EliteBook 8460p Headphone balance issues

    Hello,
I got that new Elitebook 8460p and I know that both speakers are on the left side of the beast... but when I plug my headphones (which I have test on an other device) I only got sound from the left and nothing from the right.  I looked in the sound settings and the balance is equal on 1 and 2.  Is it a "built-in" problem, is there something to resolve it or is there something wrong with my laptop.
    Thanks

  • Elitebook 8460p only boots from two specific USB sticks

My Elitebook 8460p boots perfectly normally from HDD but will ONLY boot from two specific USB sticks - 1. A Windows Recovery USB and 2. A Parted Magic USB stick which is a commercial partition recovery/imaging utility - it will NOT boot from ANY OTHER USB stick at all. It'll boot from a CD/DVD. What I would like to know is why it won't boot from any other bootable USB stick at all other than those two?

That is because the other usb sticks you have tried have not been made properly bootable. Check the partition type on the sticks that work. Do they have a uefi partition or are they just MBR partitions that are active? Use Windows own disk management snapin to investigate the usb sticks.
