Dual Studio displays and midi timepiece setup

I have a G5 dual 2.7 GHz - with a 22" studio display and am trying to setup a 17"studio display as a second monitor. I bought a DVI to ADC Adapter for the 17". But when i went to plug the USB cable in, found out that I don't have enough usb ports. There are 2 on the back and one is being used by my 22" display and the other by a midi timepiece. This is a pretty elementary question but could i just buy a USB Hub that would give me additional USB outlets? Any other suggestions?

Hi
The original AGP Graphics/Sawtooth G4 doesn't support graphics cards with an ADC connector, as the logic board lacks the extra power 'slot' just above the standard AGP slot, which provides power to the ADC connector and display. I expect that's why the stock graphics card you currently have doesn't have an ADC connector to begin with.
Similarly you can't really convert a VGA port, which is analogue, into digital DVI or ADC, which is needed for the Apple Studio displays. Adapters do exist, but they can cost $400 as they have to convert an analogue video signal to digital. You'd also lose some quality due to the analogue to digital conversion.
The options are:
Buy a replacement AGP graphics card with two DVI connectors, along with two DVI to ADC adapters. I don't think a Mac compatible card with two DVI ports (that would work in your G4 with x2 AGP) exists though.
Buy a second Mac compatible (PCI) graphics card with a DVI connector, along with two DVI to ADC adapters. The Radeon 7000 (now discontinued) or Radeon 9200 (still available) would be possible options. More info can be found here:
http://ati.de/products/radeon7000/radeon7000me/index.html
http://ati.de/products/radeon9200/radeon9200me/specs.html
Unfortunately neither option is cheap though, as in both cases you need two DVI to ADC adapters.

  • 2*17" Studio Displays and Mac Pro -

    Hi,
I have two 17" Studio Displays and want to buy a Mac Pro. can anyone fill me in on what connectivity issues there are with this setup.
(I am sure this question has been answered - if so please post a link to the thread - I don't know enough to be able to sort through the answers when I searched)
    Thanks very much

If they are 17" LCDs with the ADC (Apple Display Connector)

then each will need a DVI to ADC adapter

If they are 17" CRT with VGA connectors

they will need DVI to VGA adapters.

One is included with the Mac Pro.
If they are 17" CRTs with the ADC, you cannot use them with a Mac Pro (or any computer without built-in ADC ports).

  • Studio displays and G4

Will an Apple 21" studio display with the built in 4-port USB hub work with a sawtooth G4? I believe these have a 15 pin VGA, right?

I saw that your equipment configuration was the same as mine, and hoped you might have some advice on a problem that I posted this evening. Thanks in advance for any suggestions!
My 17-inch studio display CRT monitor (which was working fine) recently died, and I purchased a used, but 'swear-to-goodness-still-functioning' 21-inch studio display CRT monitor from Ebay to use with my G4/ACP Graphic/desktop Power Mac.
When I installed the new monitor, (connecting the three cables: AC power, VGA and USB), and restarted the computer I saw a clear (but horizontally compressed) band of picture about 4 inches wide running from the top to the bottom of the monitor for the first 30 secs of startup. Then the click of a relay and the picture disappears to leave a black screen. After that, all that happens is a constant 'fluttering' sound from the back of the monitor.
I tried restarting and zapping the PRAM, but no change.
Would welcome any suggestions on what to try next....

  • 24-inch Cinema Display and Mid-2010 Macbook Pro - Cinema Display still flickers after updates

I currently have a 15-inch Macbook Pro (mid 2010) hooked up to my 24-inch Cinema Display.  I have updated all the firmware for both the Cinema Display and the Macbook Pro but still get intermittent flickering.  Moreover, I have cleared the PRAM and VRAM.  I have done ever possible update I can find, the system is fully functioning.  Help?

I am having this exact same problem.  2010 iMac with NVIDIA GeForce 9400 256MB.  I have it hooked to a 30" display through a DisplayPort to DVI-D adapter.  The 30" is fine, but I have graphical corruption constantly on the main iMac screen.
This all started as soon as I updated to Yosemite a couple days ago.

  • Dual ADC displays and a vid card w/ no ADC ?

    Hi.
I've got a PowerMac G4 with an ATI Radeon 9800 Pro vid. card. I bought it when I purchased my 17" Apple display not knowing that the Apple display had its own connector that required me to but a $99 adaptor that also requires a power cord!
Anyway, my old CRT (that acted as my 2nd display on the G4) finally died. I purchased a nice 15" Apple display, but apparently forgot to consider the ADC connection.
I need a cheap, fast solution.
I've got a G4 with the 9800 Radeon which has a DVI and VGA connection.
By the way, does having 128MB DDR of video ram help with rendering time??
Ok, back to the original question.
I also have the original video card that came with the PowerMac G4 1.2mhz Quicksilver. I believe it's an 9000 Radeon. It's got an ADC and VGA connection.
How can I setup a dual display on the G4 with the two Apple displays? Both are ADC and neither card has (2) ADC connections.
I've got two ADC to DVI convertors and I have the VGA to DVI convertor that came with my 17" apple display, but the DVI end doesnt match the DVI end on the 2nd ADC to DVI convertor.
Any suggestions? Is there a dual ADC video card?

    Hi
As far as I'm aware, the Radeon 9000 that came as the stock graphics card in certain PowerMacs had an ADC connector and a DVI connector. It also came with a DVI to VGA adapter. If this is the case you should be able to attach one monitor directly to the ADC connector and the other to the DVI connector using the $99 DVI to ADC adapter. You'd be losing the benefit of the Radeon 9800 though.
Unfortunately there aren't any graphics cards with dual ADC connectors, as the card (and AGP slot) would have to provide enough juice to power two monitors. The options seem to be:
    1. One AGP card with an ADC connector and DVI connector, which would require one DVI to ADC adapter, such as the Radeon 9000.
    2. One AGP card with two DVI connectors, which would require two DVI to ADC adapters, such as the Radeon 9600 retail version. Mines worked perfectly, although there do seem to be problems with it in certain Quicksilvers and Digital Audio G4s.
    3. One AGP card with a DVI connector, which would require a DVI to ADC adapter, such as your existing Radeon 9800 and one PCI card with a DVI connector, which would also require a DVI to ADC adapter, such as the Radeon 9200. An AGP card with an ADC connector would also work but seems pointless given you've already got the 9800 and adapter.
Unfortunately I'm not sure there is a really cheap solution. As already mentioned, there are VGA to DVI converter boxes on the market, but they're incredibly expensive and you'd be converting from digital to analogue and back to digital, with some loss of quality.

  • Dual 17'' Displays and an NTSC Monitor for Video Editing

I am trying to hook up two 17'' apple monitors and an NTSC television monitor for video editing, but all I have on the back of my G5 tower is one ADC plug and one DVI plug. Any advice on how to make this work would be greatly appreciated.

If you run in anything other than the LCD's native resolution your graphics card will be resampling the image. This inevitably distorts the image as pixels must be discarded to create the display. Typically this softens the image.

  • Dual 24" Displays and Mac Pro

The 3 foot video cable is far too short for an efficient side by side monitor with a MacPro setup.

  • Mighty Mouse/ OS Tiger and Apple Studio Display

Not really sure that this topic should go here or in the studio area, but here goes. A few months back I updated my G5 to apple OS X 10.4.x. Up until that point, I had a USB mightly mouse plugged into my 17" apple studio display and could restart my system with no issues.
After updating to 10.4.x, when I boot my system, the USB mightly mouse acts only as a USB mouse and is very sensitive to movement. When I move the mouse a small amount, the point zips across the entire screen.
Once the system is up - if I unplug the mouse from the display and replug it in, then it works correctly and is not sensitive - that is, it acts like it should with the settings I have setup for "speed" in the control panel.
I have searched high and low for others with the same issue and have come up empty. Anyone with any ideas?
    Thanks
    Brian

To clarify, upon restarting, the system sees the mouse as a two button USB mouse. Once the system is up, when I unplug the mouse and plug it bak in, the keyboard/mouse control panel, switches to reflect that this is a USB mightly mouse with all the various options.
This same behavior occurs when I use the USB port on the front of the G5's case.
Currently under the System Information ( apple in the upper left corner of the screen ), the system lists the mouse as an Apple Opticl Mouse, version 1.08
    Thanks

  • Add old 18-inch Studio Display to 2013 iMac; How ??

I need more screen real estate. My current computer is a 27-inch iMac, bought in May, 2013. When I bought the iMac the folks at the Apple store across town told me I needed an adapter to run a 2nd monitor and they sold me a “Mini DisplayPort to DVI Adapter”. The DVI end of this has a 24-pin female connector with one horizontal bar.
My new machine replaced a dual G4 Mac tower, from 2002, that used an 18-inch Studio Display monitor. Problem is, this monitor has a 30-pin male connector with one horizontal bar that simply won't fit my adapter.
The guy at my near-by Microcenter store told me that they have no adapters to handle the transition between my old Studio Display and my new computer. But he said he thought Apple had something for $190 that would handle the transition. Hmmmmm. I can get a new monitor for less than that!
I've spent a couple hours rummaging around in the FAQs and don't find anything that helps me.
Anybody have any suggestions about how to attach my old Studio Display to my newish iMac?

  • 20" studio display & AGP G4

i bought a 20" flat panel LCD acrylic studio display and can't get it to work with my power mac G4 AGP "sawtooth". i have the display hooked via DVI to ADC adapter like i did with my 17" flat panel LCD acrylic studio display, which worked fine. the 20" starts, i see the gray screen and the little gear is spinning as the system starts up but then it goes black and turns off. this is the second 20" display to do this so i do not think both displays are defective. any ideas whats wrong?

What resolution setting do you have on the G4? It might not be compatible with the monitor.

  • 17" Studio Display flashing

As others have posted, my display has begun its 3-flash routine with the lower half of the screen darkening. There are already all the helpful directions to Moniserv and its inverter parts, but...When I first had this problem two years ago, I solved it by downloading some new firmware for the monitor. Now I can't remember where I got this information or the firmware link, and all my notes have been packed away for a house move. Can anyone help?

Heres an update to what I have done.
I took the G4 to work and put in a PCI card from another machine. I connected it to a CRT monitor and it worked fine. All the resolutions support showed up. So it has to do something with the studio display and or the nvidia card.

  • How do i take apart an old Studio Display?

So, my girlfriend and I saw this article where someone has taken apart an old Apple Studio Display and turned it into a groovy little cat bed:
    http://www.bitrebels.com/geek/the-mac-apple-studio-display-cat-bed-mod/
The problem though is that I can't find any instructions online as to how to properly take apart one of these displays, and neither of us really has a clue on how to start or what we're getting into should we decide to do this to our old one that's just taking up space in the basement.
Anyone have any links to detailed instructions, or feel like offering up any advice? Thanks!
