Dual system install

After reviewing the past posts, many similar issues but couldn't find exactly the same.
I'm still running Tiger 4.11 mainly to keep using Avid Xpress Pro (never upgrading for Leopard...jerks). So I want to install Leopard for all my other computing needs, but need to be able to quickly switch over to Tiger to run Avid.
How do I install Leopard to make it so both systems show up in my "startup disk" window in system prefs? Presumably I'd be able to select the system I needed and restart.
I saw something about partitioning internal drive, but is this really necessary? I'm happy to restart whenever I need to switch.
Anyone know how to do this? And know of any issues / problems I should be aware of in the process?
Thanks.

You can only install one operating system on a logical drive so two operating systems requires two logical drives - either two hard drives or one hard drive that is partitioned. With that caveat in mind, it is simple to have two OSes. The easiest route would be to buy an inexpensive FireWire drive and install the new OS on it.

  • Adobe encore the software that's used to decode the media is not available on this system. installing the correct decoders for the file you are working with may help correct the problem

    Hi,
I got this message after importing about ten or so H.264 files that I encoded from Adobe media encoder.  "adobe encore the software that's used to decode the media is not available on this system. installing the correct decoders for the file you are working with may help correct the problem."
The files we're shot with HD cameras.  Edited in Premiere Pro CS3.  I installed the update 3.0.1 with still the same error.
I also tried a brand new project and after about ten or so files being imported into a timeline, the system crash.  I tried this twice....
        Thanks in Advance

    Hi Hunt,
Here is the skinny.  A window base PC.  footage shot with HD sony HD cameras,  Project imported to Premiere CS3.  Once completed sent file to Adobe media encoder and render them as H.264 widescreen high Quality.  Imported them to Adobe Encore CS3.  After about ten files or so.  I got the error message.  Did all the basic trouble shoot like restarting the computer, got latest patch.  Even build a new test project with the same problem.
Something else I read in the forums, is the encore will transcoded the project to Mpeg 2 anyway, after looking at my project I realized those few files were indeed untranscoded.  So it will be a double compression and I dont want that.  So, my new question is, what is H.264 good for ?????????? I was research that Mpeg 2 is a faster render but H.264 is a slower render but better quality.....
       what do you think ????

  • IMac won't read the System Install DVD after trying a Software Update (Whic

Last weekend I tried downloading the 10.4.7 update to my iMac. Towards the end of the download the iMac crashed out and said that the Software Update was unsuccessful. As this was the case I tried rerunning the 'Software Update' again but after a few seconds of the application running and the little window being on the screen, it just dropped out and exited. As this was therefore not working I tried to download the Software Update as a Stand Alone application. I found after downloading the file that mounting a disk image on my iMac no longer works. My next step was to try and reinstall OS X from the System Install DVD. I put the DVD in the DVD Drive and found that after it whirred for about 20 seconds, the disk ejected. I thought this was odd so I tried to boot the iMac , holding down the 'C' key once the DVD was in place inside the iMac. The Mac powered up and then the DVD whirred for a while and once again it ejected the DVD. I now have no way of reinstalling OS X..and am at a loss. I called up the supplier of the iMac as I only purchased it in May 2006. They advised me that the warranty only covers Hardware and not Software. They said with a problem like this it could be expensive to try and work out what is causing it as it is sort of an unknown. I would like to know if anyone else has had this problem, is there some way I can see what the iMac is doing when it is trying to read the DVD and the ejects it, and is there some way of 'resetting' the iMac so that it is in the initial state. I know the BIOS on these machines is a 'soft' BIOS so as the supplier said, it is quite possible that the Software Update has corrupted the soft BIOS on the machine. Any ideas?

Yes. It is possible that the DVD could be bad.
It is also possible that your corrupted installation is preventing the DVD from working right.
It would seem strange, except that this happened with another guy as well. But, once we disconnected his internal hard drive with the corrupted OS 10.4.7 install, the machine booted from the DVD and worked properly. We then connected a different hard drive to install to, and it worked fine. Then, we connected the drive as a secondary and formatted it and it resumed working.
But, with an iMac CoreDuo, you cannot open the machine to unplug the drive. So, you'll be a bit stuck if you require the same solution. He had a PowerMac G5.
But, basically, his corrupted OS 10.4.7 installation was preventing booting from a CD, booting into safe mode, booting from an external drive, or any other kind of booting.
So, for him, the only option was disconnecting the internal drive and installing on another one.
I hope this doesn't turn out to be necessary on your system as well. If so, you'll need to take it into the shop for servicing.
The only other option I could think of is to try and boot it into Target Disk mode, and format it's drive with another computer. Perhaps that would work.
Once your internal drive has been cleared (formatted), then it may boot from the DVD again (assuming your problem is the same as the other guys).
You can read about Target Disk Mode here:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=58583
You can read about the steps we took to troubleshoot and repair the other guys machine here:
    http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=2629919#2629919
Perhaps that will help explain what I described above.
    I hope this helps.

  • Best Solution for Backup of Dual System(Mac & Win7) and Data Partition

I need a professional solution of backup my dual-system, which are Mac OS Mavericks and Windows 7, and a Data Paritition.
Right now, I have three partitions: Bootcamp (for Win 7 system, NTFS), DATA (for both system files, FAT32), Macintosh HD (for mac os system, HFS).
Before on PC machine, I may restore the system with Ghost Tool, but since now I am using Macbook Pro. Cannot do that way any more I think.
Also, the annoying thing is DATA partition, if I make it a FAT32 format, some large files cannot be copied into, but if I make it a NTFS, Mac OS cannot regonize it, right?
What about using exFAT format? Never use that before, actually. I heard that format can accept large files and also be regonized by Mac OS.
To sum up, two advices needed. 1. Win 7 partition backup and restore w/o breaking Mac OS system; 2. DATA partition format for both system.
Thanks a lot. I appreciate your help!

  • System Install Problems

    Hi
I am reinstalling my mac mini with the system install disks (10.4.5). The first disk works fine. I am then asked to insert disk 2 though my mini refuses to recognize the disk as the correct disk. One of my friends has an identical model - bought at the same time - I tried using his disks and encountered the same problem. I'm unable to do anything as the mini will not let me out of this screen.
Any suggestions of what to do?

  • XML fails to reconnect files with dual system recordings

I synchronised dual system recordings with 16 bit stereo recording on camera sound and high quality 24 bit mono on separate recorded sound. I deleted the camera sound and linked the tracks in the browser and all works well in FCP. The video is ProRes 422 HQ.
However after exporting an xml file for editing offline when I try to reconnect the media the xml file doesn't connect properly with the sound. All other files without separate sound reconnect perfectly. Is there a way around this? Also, my video and sound files have the same name. Would this contributor to the problem? I have a feeling the problem has something to do with the two differing sound sampling rates.

  • Combine fresh system install and Time Machine Backup

    Hi all !
There´s a question that´s more generally Leopard and Snow Leopard related:
In trying to find causes of a system slowdown I decided to go for a complete fresh system install. BUT I also want to use my data saved in the time machine backup without spoiling the freshly created system folder.
I also want to update the system to the current OS version before restoring from BU.
Is there a way to keep the fresh system folder deriving from a fresh installation and just replace the rest of the data (that´s not present yet) with the time machine backup ?
I think the handy command "Restore System from Backup" from the OSX system installer wouldnt be a good idea. It would copy ALL the files from the backup, and would overwrite my fresh system folder, so that I´ll end up with the same old, probably faulty system.
Could the migration tool do the job ?
    Thanks for your knowledge !

You should be able to migrate, for example, just your data using TM. But, TM is a bit unpredictable. Why not make a bootable clone of your internal on an external. It would serve fail-safe purposes, migrations purposes, and data-backup purposes. At the end of your install, you could, as groups only, migrate your data, users, settings, and apps--using your discretion. I would migrate only my data and my settings.

    See above.

    Absolutely correct.

You can use Migration Assistant with TM, but I have never done so. So, I can't advise. The clone I mentioned takes care of all you issues in a very straight forward manner without dealing with the confusion of TM and MA that can arise.

  • Macbook circa 2010 w 2 Systems installed - 1 incomplete

    Hello,
Looks like I squeezed the gist of the problem into the subject line. This is my wifes computer so information is limited on 'what happened'. I do not know how the second system got on the HDD, but it is incomplete and is somehow booted to occassionally. When it's the boot drive there are numerous issues due to the incomplete nature of it. Holding the 'R' key on start up or using system preferences > start up disc both work for booting to the correct disc.
It just occurred to me that perhaps the HD is partioned - hmmm - would Disk Utility tell me / show me whether or not the HD was partioned? Guessing it must be in order to have two systems installed. I suppose in this case the HD would require a full erase to rid it of the partial system?
I feel like I'm answering my own question, but having the pro's opinion is always a good idea.
The question is how can I remove the offending disc (system)?

Guess I'll have to take a closer look at 'just deleting' a partition - didn't know you could do it. Assuming if the one is deleted then it's space is absorbed into the remaining partition?
I'm using CCC to transfer to a network volume - used to be my Time Machine backup but Apple and Buffalo technologies diverged and things are no longer compatible for TM - now I just afp to it and use CCC for occassional stuff like this.
I've always been 'quirky' about erasing when things don't resolve with permission repair or Applejack or even Disk Warrior. The thinking is that erasing will get the bug where ever it is.
P.S. Managed to delete the one partition (150GB) but the remaining (100GB) can't be enlarged or so it seems.

  • Multicam and multiple audio tracks sync issue, dual system shoot

I've got a pesky problem with the multicam feature that has me stumped. I've got two cameras, slated with a clapboard, and one track of location sound recorded dual system on a seperate recorder. I have no matched TC on any of the tracks, got to use IN point only. I've tried making a merged clip for cam 1, then making the multiclip using the merged cam 1 clip and cam 2. The video of the multiclip is in sync fine, but the location sound (which is A3 on cam 1) is always offset and way out of sync.
I've tried blowing away A1 and A2 from the cam 1 merged clip, putting the location sound at A1, and using that master clip to create the multiclip, but to no avail. Still out of sync
It appears that because the location sound has a different start time in the merged clip than the video, FCP is getting confused about what to do with it.
I've been successful with this method before, but the last time I had matched TC on the cameras. For some reason making the multiclip using the IN point for sync isn't working this time.
Anyone encounter this and have a work around or solution?

I've tried blowing away A1 and A2 from the cam 1 merged clip, putting the location sound at A1, and using that master clip to create the multiclip, but to no avail. Still out of sync< </div>
Loyed's got way more experience with multicam than most of us so it's safe to follow his lead.
Not knowing exactly what's going on (sorry if you've already tried this), I'd sync up the audio and then export the newly merged clip as a self-contained movie. Reimport.
Hope you figure it out. Please return and post your solution for the benefit of those who come after seeking help with multiclips.

How do I re-download and install Acrobat 11 Standard - after I wiped my system installing Win 8?

There is no trial version for Acrobat XI Standard. What Leonard suggested would work for Pro however.
If you purchased Acrobat via a download from Adobe, you can re-download by going to the "My Orders" page on Adobe's web site (https://www.adobe.com/account/account-orders.html). You would also find you serial number there. If this does not work, you can download the software from here: Download Acrobat products | Standard, Pro | XI, X - if you've registered your software, you can lookup your serial number here: https://www.adobe.com/account/my-products-services.html#MyProductsHeader

  • Lost OS System install CD's.

Lost OS System install CD's. I need to get replacement from Apple Care.  Since I don't have a plan with Apple Care they want the onetime fee of $49.95 just to answer the call from the automated system. Is that right. Does anyone know?
    Thanks in advance

    Sounds right to me. But
Look on eBay or your local CragsList. You might find an inexpensive copy of the disks you need.
If your computer is able to run Mac OS X 10.6 (Snow Leopard) then consider purchasing the $30 Snow Leopard installer from Amazon or another retailer. It's less expensive than going through AppleCare.
