Dual-video cards worth it? What about Phys-x?

About to build a system through CyberPowerpc for Adobe Premiere editing (and photoshop/lightroom). As of now I will be editing canon 5d MKII video files.
Is it better to just get one good card now? I'm wondering if performance will significantly increase with a second card. Also if anyone has experience with using a dedicated PhysX card I woud love to hear about it.
Should I get an SSD hard drive as my OS drive?
I will also be using a Drobo-S connected via e-sata or USB-3 for storing my data: mainly video and image files for use in CS5

Drobo's run a modified software raid 5 that has allot of overhead especially with the virtual volume. This slows their units down. You are sacrificing some performance for ease of use and features. In backup scenario's it's worth the trade off. However that is not the case for production drives. I would not work off a Drobo at all. Definitely get another internal drive for production instead of the Drobo.

• Dual video cards... what do I do with them?

So I bought my Mac Pro at a local Apple Store and got the ATI card installed. Unlike online, you can only buy it and add it to the base config, so I have the 7300 card as well.
Other than attach more monitors what does this do for? I know I have more video ram and I am sure that helps with... something. I just don't know what and the "genius's" at the store just told me... "it's, um... better cause you have 2!"
I have looked around online and can't seem to find anything that will tell me what I want to know.
Anyone able to tell me what I can do with them? Or if they offer any advantage to just having the ATI alone? Should I sell the 7300?
Thanks all,
Stephen
2.66 Mac Pro 4gigs RAM ATI and 7300 cards; Powerbook G4 17in Mac OS X (10.4.10)

Each graphic card has it's own memory and it is not sharable from one to another.
The ATI 512M X1900XT card is a good card and is very fast for my games, video work and anything else I do with my Mac Pro. If you need a powerful card to drive 2 monitors, this was the best choice for the littlest money.
The 7300 card is 256M and is also a good card but will become outdated in a shorter time frame, espically with games. Is limited in driving two monitors due to the video ram of 256M.
If you don't need more than 2 monitors with the ATI, I would hang on to it in case of a problem or sell it.
I too have read other threads with problems with the ATI and 7300 installed in the same system. But I have just the ATI card so those issues does not apply to me.

• How good is a Macbook Pro with dual video cards for gaming?

I've been a PC guy my whole life (aside from my iPhone which I love). My gf has been pushing me to try out a mac and considering how my PC laptops have a pretty good track record of dying on me or encountering some other problems after a year or two, I can't help but consider making the investment. The only thing is, I'm a big gamer and usually get the latest games. I'm not super tech savvy though I do my research and get a sense of what kind of specs are better and worse.
In terms of gaming, I always assumed that more ram = better. In that sense, I'm a little put off that even the most expensive MacBook Pro only comes with 4 gigs of ram (which is what my year and a half old laptop has now) especially when it seems most newer laptops have 8 gigs minimum for a fraction of the price (and 16 gigs if you're willing to spend as much as you would on the most expensive macbook pro). Does RAM somehow work differently on a Mac or is it truly that little?
Also, how does the whole dual video card thing work, does that mean I'd be having the power of those two cards put together?
Personally, I've been leaning towards the Asus G53SX-NH71 because I can buy it for less than the cost of the cheapest macbook pro and as far as gaming purposes go it seems to have more power than even the most expensive Macbook which costs over double the price.
Am I missing something here? Do the dual video cards really bring that much to the table or for gaming purposes am I better off with a PC?
Thanks.

I've been watching this forum for years, and I'll have to say that gamers are not a big group around here. A few things. First, getting 8GB of RAM for the MacBook Pro is cheap. Most people either don't care, pay Apple to do it, or, like me, DIY. The max you put in a MBP is 8GB, so no 16GB, unless you were looking at the iMac or MacPro.
Second, there is no dual video card in a MacBook Pro. There is an integrated video card, an Intel HD3000, which shares RAM with the CPU, or a discrete video card, an AMD, various versions on different MBP's. The Intel is for low battery usage. The AMD is more powerful, and it's to be used when you've got power. The video card has more applications than just gaming, but also in video and photo editing.
No one here is going to talk you into one platform or another. If you are only going to game in Windows, then it's a waste to get a Mac. If you're going to game in Windows but want the Mac side to do everything else, the build quality and elegance of the Mac will far exceed most products out there. You can run Windows in Boot Camp natively, and as I understand, gamers love it, because the Mac is actually a better Windows machine than most Windows machines. But I don't play games, so I have no proof.
So the choice is yours. And we could argue all day long about the side by side comparison of a cheap Windows machine vs. the Mac. You are using the price vs. price comparison that is a false dichotomy, ignoring how one values various features. For example, the trackpad on a MacBook Pro far exceeds (and I mean light year exceeds) anything on any other laptop out there.
I spent 10 minutes answering your question. I'm not debating you on x vs. y. The choice is totally on what you're going to do. Most of us are trying to contribute to the world, so gaming is low on the needs list.

• After Effects is NOT using the full Twelve GB of memory on my Mac Pro late 2013 dual video cards

I would like to know if there is a reason why AE CC12 and CC13 (2014) is not using the full amount of video card memory on my MP late 2013. It's six GB per freaking card I invested in and its not accessing it.
Is there a work around this issue?

Why shouldn't it. When I upgraded to this new Mac Pro late 2013 with its dual video cards. Premier turned into a blasting fast editor. I no longer need to render my edited cuts and the scrubbing of preview and timeline footage is phenomenal. The only performance boost I've seen in AE with this new system is in rendering and I can't even say its double as fast in comparison to Premier or Encoder and its an 8-Core system with 32GB of ram. Everything else is flying.
So again to answer your why should it. I rebuttal with "Why shouldn't it". The other two mentioned programs are using GPU resources to improve performance why is AE so behind the curve.
I'm not the only one asking why. I was in the audience at a Dmala meeting here in LA with Todd Kopriva and Al Mooney previewing AE and Premier 2014.
People kept asking Todd about performance boost in between questions about new features. Todd finally just asked what do you prefer a couple of new features or performance boost. Everyone wanted performance boost over new features. If you think I'm making this up go ask Todd Kopriva.

• PSCS4 crash - dual video cards - steps

Many here may know my tale of woe when it comes to Photoshop Cs4 and dual video cards.
I finally solved 95% of the crashing issues by installing twin video cards to drive 3 monitors. But I was still experiencing a crash once or twice a day. I've finally determined exactly what was causing those occasional crashes and thought I'd post it here (as well as file a bug report) so others would be aware of it.
I drive 3 monitors - 24" Dell Ultrasharp, 30" Apple HD Cinema, 20" Apple Cinema off of 2-nVidia 8800GT cards in a 2007 2.66Ghz Quad MacPro with OS 10.5.7 and a Wacom Intuos 4 Large tablet with the latest driver installed (6-2-2.1 or whatever it is). 24" and 30" Monitors share a single video card and 20" is connected to the second video card.
Photoshop CS4 has all OpenGL features turned on.
I use the 30" monitor for the main window plus the toolbar and Control Bar. All other panels are arranged on the 20" monitor to the right. 24" Monitor not really active when Photoshop is in use. I do not have documents set up to open as tabs, I specifically have turned that off.
An application crash is easily reproduced with the following steps:
Open two documents on Monitor 1 -- call them DocA and DocB - Color mode, bit depth, etc is of no relevance. Floating windows, no tabs.
Have the Layers Panel open on Monitor 2.
With DocA the active window on Monitor 1 and DocB visible behind DocA somewhere -- i.e. not tabs, but floating windows -- click and drag a layer from the Layers Panel on Monitor 2 to the window for DocB on Monitor 1.
Spinning beach ball for about 20 seconds
Crash.
Crash happens in every instance.
What I have yet to test:
Turning off OpenGL features
Making the 20" and 30" share the same video card
Hopefully this info is of some use to others with multiple video cards.

I do not think this is likely to be confirmed as a photoshop issue as it is just as likely an issue with the Apple monitors which are notorious
for going belly up.
But most important it is curious as to why one has two cards and three monitors if one is not doing motion graphics, just curious. And then why three computer monitors.
And in order to make this an issue with the three monitors and two cards and photoshop you would have to remove the second card and the third monitor
to see if the crash no longer occurs. If the crash still occurs it would then not be an issue with the card more than likely as you would still have the drivers for the third monitor on your system.
I have two monitors but seldom use the second for panels I would prefer to use it for preview of the entire image when retouching details on the main monitor. Hate to go back and forth from one monitor and the other.
I don't necessarily doubt that this could be a bug with photoshop and the cards and monitor configuration or it is a n Apple problem for their support of two graphic cards, which I do not think Apple promises or Adobe for that matter. I think it is a problem that has to be tested one several different systems in order for it to be pin down.
So you need other users with the same monitors and cards and of course your model Mac which is the same as mind the original MacPro 2.66Ghz model with those same monitors and upgrade cards. Of course you also need users with similar configurations but different models of displays and Macs and graphic cards to make certain it does or does not happen on other configurations.
I know you are not saying it is photoshop's problem but there is no way at present from what you state to pin it down to anything specific.
For instance if you turn on the third monitor and put some panels or a third document on it does that stop the crash? If no then it doesn't tell you much but if yes then would the second card have anything to do with this crash?
You might or might not get my point.

• Dual video cards and PS4

Hi I was wondering if anybody else is having this problem.
I am running a mac pro with dual video cards (8800 and 2600) and I cant select opengl in photoshop cs4. if i disconnect one of the cards it works.
Is it not possible to use dual cards with PS4
Any help?
David

well, I have two graphic cards of the same kind but with Photoshop CS4 open, I can only view the images on the first monitor: if I put the image on the 2nd display it shows a black window :-((( maybe a bug of the software?!?

• Dual Video Cards with 845e max2

I cant seem to get dual video cards working with my new MSI 845e max2 board.
i have one AGP TNT2 64 this card works fine i have tried two PCI video cards.
i have also flashed the bios to the Latest release.
XP with SP1 finds the second video card but says device will not start, i have also tryed different PCI slots, still the same error.
I would love to get this working due to doing mostly a lot of Video Editing can some one please shed some light on this.
Many thanks
MAV

I have only setup dual Video on 845 Max but
use nvidia chipset on all cards PCI tnt2 m64s and any AGP that is nvidia
Use a new driver detonator 30+ and you may have to shuffle the PCI cards around if you have a'hardware conflict
Works under 9x, W2k and XP
Make sure all the cards are using the same driver version... you may have to manually udate each driver in some cases

• Mac Pro Mountain Lion Kernel Panic Dual Video Cards

I've been getting constant panics since upgrading to Mountain lion on my 2009 Mac Pro.
Worth noting is I have dual GT 120 Video Cards and dual 30" LCDs. Every panic seems to be caused by com.apple.NVDAResman
This computer has been rock solid since 2009 and only after "updating" to Mountain Lion has it become unstable.
Was hoping 10.8.1 and 10.8.2 would fix the issued, but neither have. It's worse than ever. Crashing every day.
Already reinstalled the OS, tested the RAM, etc. No change. Still crashes everyday.
What should I do? It's really eating into productivity...

I have the same problem

• Is there a fix for MAC Pro with Dual video cards that randomly logs off and on?

From my readings on the Internet this seems to be a know problem. That even furthers my frustrations with the latest OS X upgrades. So far on both my MACBOOK PRO and my MAC PRO it has been a major downgrade as both systems are no longer stable. Enough with my complaints...
Is there any plan to address this problem with the MAC PRO? I can't believe 10.8.1 didn't fix it. More can be read on it at:
http://jvm-technology.blogspot.com/2012/08/mac-pro-users-experiencing-random-log .html
Does anyone have work around to use dual screen monitors with the system? I have two video cards, the article says to remove one. Has this worked for anyone? Can I use dual screens with the one video card. Before I go messing around with these type of things I just want to be sure that this is a real fix. For the price of the cards and the system I really can't believe apple has this issue in the first place and has not fixed it.

Self-hosted add-ons have to be fixed for every new version of Firefox. Two to 6 months for updating an add-on is ridiculous for a program which has a new version release every '''6 weeks'''. If that extension was hosted at the official Add-ons website, Mozilla would take take care of "bumping" that extension, as long as it keeps working, for every new version of Firefox, as the new version is released.
See this thread from yesterday, I posted instructions about how to "bump" that extension for Firefox 7.
https://support.mozilla.com/en-US/questions/884484
You can also use this extension to "bump" an already installed extension for compatibility with the currently installed version of Firefox.
• Dual video card on the m3985

I'm planing to upgrade my m3958 to it's limits for 3d rendering. This is the present rig. Processor: Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-3770 CPU @ 3.40GHz (8 CPUs), ~3.4GHzMemory: 8GB GPU : NVIDIA Quadro K2000 * Really i dont see much difference with this card. Though it is rated amongs the best. I dont know why* So what can i really add to make this machine more powerfull for 3d rendering. Thanks

More information on the Video Card integration problem, but no success yet.
I plugged in the second monitor; an Acer AL2223W LCD connected to one of the ports on the EVGA GeForce GT 610 card, to see if it would be recognized. It displays "No Signal" when turned on.
Did a search on the computer and found the AMD VISION Engine Control Center. That had a place to search for video equipment and the only thing it would find is the Samsung 213T.
I verified that the fan on the card is running so the card is getting power via the PCI-E slot.
The 2 outputs on the video card and the receptacle on the Acer are DVI-I dual link configuration with 24 pins + 4 pins at the flat pin for analog signals. The Samsung has a DVI-D dual link receptacle (24 pins).
The cable is DVI-D Single Link (18 pins + the flat pin). When I get another cable it will be DVI-D Dual Link.
It seems that the EVGA GeForce GT 610 video card is not being recognized by the mother board or not putting out a signal.
There was no driver disk with either the video card or the computer.
Power supply is 430 Watts and the card specs say the PS should be at least 300 Watts.
Do I need to do something with the BIOS or get a driver or setup disk for the board or card or do something with a jumper on the MB?
Do I need to get the DVI-D Dual Link cable to get the signal from the Video Card to the Monitor?
Thanks for any help you can give me.

• I believe my video card is failing, what should I do?

Recently I have been noticing my video card on my late 2009 iMac (nVIDIA Geforce 9400 GT is the card) has been performing poorly. I am usually on a Windows 7 partition and I someitimes recieve BSoD when playing graphics intensive games and video playback has been terrible. As I start up my iMac to perform some test, my system has a kernal panic. About an hour later, this happened again. I know that this is not a virus as I have 3 anit virus programs on each platform (iAntivirus, Sophos and ClamXav for mac, Norton, AVG and MS Security essentials for windows).
As I perform a test on my iMac, the program detects that the video ram is failing and needs repair. The program is called TechTool Deluxe and it came on an Apple Care disc I've had for a few years. My computer is no longer under warranty. Is there anything I can do or do I need it repaired by Apple? I am also wondering about how to protect my data too, as it is a dual boot system. I have a backup for both partitions, but they are on different drives.

If you've run the AHT in extended, you now know how long it can take. Depends on the amount of RAM it has to check. That is the most time consuming part of the test.
The only reason I asked you to confirm with the AHT was that I've never used TTD (although, I have it on disc), and don't know how reliable it is. My thinking was that if both TTD and AHT find the same error, that would certainly remove any doubt. The usual problem with the AHT and, I suppose, TTD as well, is that if it finds an error, it can be trusted that the error is real. But coming up negative isn't all that meaningful.
With the symptoms you are describing, as I've already said, I'd just bring it in.
You might also try running on the OS X partition, with all that AV (unnecessary and completely overkill) uninstalled. You can leave the ClamX alone; it is not known to cause any problems.

• Dual video card proformance

I have two video cards currently installed that would support four monitors simultaneously, but I only have two and I have them in both on separate cards for performance boost. I'm guess I wasn't right on my theory because gaming performance on the mac side(I have boot camp) is lacking. For instance, I'll have WoW in windowed mode on one side running 75fps but if I take the window to the other monitor, it drops to about 14fps.
I'm not sure what the issue is, but its strange. Any thoughts?

The Intel MacPro has 26 available lanes for use with the PCI/express bus. I have my ATI x1900 card in the double wide slot to allow 16X (16 lanes used). My NVIDIA GeForce 7300 GT is in Slot 4 to allow it to run at 8X (8 lanes used). This leaves 2 lanes for the last two slots. If you decide to add a card that takes more than the available 2 lanes then either the 8X slot must be changed or the 16X slot. Since you are a gamer, then the 8X must be curbed in it's lane use. For those without those needs the 16X can become 8X.
Even though Apple advertises that you can make any slot use whatever part of the 26 available lanes, there actually are many restrictions. Just use the mentioned Apple utility to adjust your slots for maximum speed for you.
By the way the Intel MacPro was astep backwards in the PCI/Express lane area. THe PPC G5 has 32 available lanes for use. The Intel MacPro needs at least that many lanes. I would think that 40-48 would be much better with 64 for those that have the need for that much speed across the board. 32 lanes would allow you, if Apple gave you those choices, to run both video cards at 16X, but leaves nothing for the last 2 slots. 40 would give you 16X for 2 video cards with 8 lanes left for the last 2 slots.
Not being a gamer, I'll probably change my 16X to 8X to allow me to add 1 or 2 4X cards. We need Apple to make the next Intel MacPro better in this area.

• Having Dual video cards or SLI in premiere CC will it make a difference?

I have the Geforce 980x
IF i have 2 in SLI
will it make any difference for my render time

See Tweakers Page - Exporting Style and Tweakers Page - What video card to use?
Do you have at least:
6-core or 8-core i7, overclocked to 4.2+ GHz or dual Xeon 10-core E5 v3 or better, and
64 or 128 GB RAM, and
Sustained transfer rates on all volumes of more than 400 MB/s, and
32+ unused PCIe-3.0 lanes available.
If the answer is YES to all 4 points above, then a dual GTX 980 may - just may - be beneficial if:
you render for previews all the time using accelerated effects, or
you export from source to destination with rescaling (i.e. 4K to HD or HD to SD), frame rate changes, frame blending almost always.
If your workflow does not include these two points almost all the time, having two video cards is a waste of money.
Using SLI is irrelevant for PR, since the video cards are treated as separate components. If anything, using the SLI bridge can only complicate matters and reduce performance, because of the inherent overhead of the SLI design.
