Dubbed from Vhs tape - won't play in iMac

Wishing to get them onto a DVD, I had some 8mm home movie films transferred to videotape, which I then dubbed onto a disk using a friend's Toshiba recorder/player.  When I insert that disk into my iMac in hopes of editing the content it and making a permanent final disk, it won't read.  In finder it shows up with the suffix .fpbf and containing only 8KB.  That disk will, however, play on the Toshiba.  I've spent at least a dozen hours on this over the weekend.  I redid the dubbing (twice now) making sure the disk was finalized at the end.  That time I used a DVD+RW and my iMac won't even accept it for reading -- no prompt, it just spits it back out.
Any advice would be very welcomed.
Thank you.

It sounds like the labels are causing an out of balance situation that the optical drive isn't able to compensate for. As you've noted, removing the labels is your best option. If they are paper labels then you should be able to remove everything but the adhesive using a simple water bath. Provide ample time for the labels to soak up the water so that they are easy to remove. Once the paper portion is gone and the CD has been dried you may find that you can read the discs and transfer the files. I wouldn't continue using the CD's with the adhesive still exposed because the adhesive will tend to collect dust, lint, etc and could get into your drive. Unfortunately I'm not sure if the chemicals in WD-40, which I would normally use to remove adhesive, will damage the CD. If you decide to atempt removal of the adhesive make sure you only appy it to the label side of the surface. Do not appy it to the edges of the CD since that is where the various layers come together and may provide an entry point for any liquids to wick their way into the media layer.
For future purchases I suggest staying away from labels and instead purchase discs that are ink-jet printer ready (assuming your printer supports printing on CD's).

  • Dub multiple VHS tapes to same DVD?

I have dubbed a VHS tape to a DVD but can't figure out how to dub more VHS tapes to the same DVD. Help?

Formatting a DVD is not done for DVD-R or DVD+R. Formatting is done to prepare a disc to be recorded on.
Finalizing a DVD is done for DVD-R and DVD+R. Finalizing is required before a DVD-R or DVD+R can be played elsewhere.
So when you first insert a DVD-R or DVD+R, you can start recording right away. You don't and can't format it.
(When I refer here to "title" I'm referring to something you have recorded, such as a DVD dubbing from a VHS tape).
Nothing recorded on a DVD-R or DVD+R is erased unless you specifically delete the title. Note that once you delete the title, the space used for that title cannot be reclaimed.
So if you start recording a new title on a DVD-R or DVD+R, and it already has titles recorded, the existing titles will remain.
DVD-RW and DVD+RW are different. I can comment about those once you're clear on DVD-R and DVD+R.
Normally, I'd suspect your existing DVD that won't play elsewhere needs to be finalized. You should be able to press SETUP then DVD Menu then Finalize (as described on p. 32). However, you said that you found DVD Menu to be grayed out. Based on what you're describing, I don't think you've actually recorded anything on the disc yet. You can't finalize an empty disc, so DVD Menu would be disabled at that point.
I had recommended not to autofinalize since I think it is better to control when you finalize, after you have specifically what you want on the disc.
I hope I've answered your outstanding questions (except about the RW discs). If you have further questions or follow-up questions, please post them to this forum so that others can benefit from them. (i.e. don't send email to ask your questions).

  • How do I get Video from vhs tape into Imavie HD?

I am trying to back up some of my home movies from VHS tape to DVD. Is it possible to connect my vhs player to my mac? What kind of equipment do I need to do this inexpensively.
    Richard

I don't think my camera has that connection. It's a JVC Mini DV camera- very inexpensive.I just purchased it recently. It has an Audio Video output connector, DC input, Digital Video Connector(DV in/out). Are there some inexpensive DVD/VHS combos available or am I better off with some sort of converter?

Why won't movie files from flip camera won't play on ipod even after being converted?

    Try the standard fixes:
    - Reset. Nothing is lost
Reset iPod touch: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Restore from backup
    - Restore to factory defaults/new iPod.

Use a converter box like a Grass Valley ADVC110 I think it is, or DV camera that you can use as a converter.

    Hi, BartleyBauer.
If the media that you are attempting to sync plays in iTunes, try removing the preference to sync music as this remove the media from the device.  Once this is done, try syncing the media again.

  • Movies suddenly won't play on iMac w/ Maverics

All movies (YouTube, Vimeo, my own on internal or external drive) suddenly won't play on iMac.  Just started happening 3 days ago.

They just didn't play from browsers, my own mp4's,  or .mov files, iMovie wouldn't work either; but solved it today by simply re-loading OS 10.9.2.   Everything works fine now.

  • Using DVD made from VHS tape (sound only) - won't load

A few years ago I transferred my classical music collection from reel-to-reel tape and LPs to VHS tapes. These worked very well in a VCR.
Now I tried to load the contents of these DVDs insto the IPOD via ITUNES. They were not recognized, however. The DVDs were DVD-R and DVD-RW.
Is there any way a get this material into an IPOD>

    I am confused.
You went reel to reel to VHS tapes-suddenly you switch to talking about DVD's?
iTunes does not recognize audio DVD's(I think, I know it will not burn them).
Since for the most part audio DVD's were/are a flop, I don't know of any program that would recognize them.

  • Capturing in FCE from VHS Tape/VHS Player - Can it be done??

I capture no problem using a 4-6pin Firewire for DV Tapes; and pulling them in from either a Sony DV or a Cannon GL-2 DV.
Does anyone know of a (somewhat low-cost) VHS Player, that has a digital connection so I can pull in source from old VHS Tapes - or digitize some of these VHS Tapes I own, but can no longer get them on any other media..?
I have searched for USB-VHS Players and they seem expensive, however, I would imagine that a USB connection would be wrong... and anything else I find with better digital connections put the VHS Player/Recorders in the HD category and get muderously expensive. I seriously am just looking to capture maybe 10-12 tapes, and would love to have the capability if the need ever arises again for production work; but don't forsee a ton of it.
I have been contemplating daisy-chaining a VHS Player through my DV Cam(s) to see if that would work - but figured I would check here first, being that somebody may know an easy solution... or has done this before and knows the exact remedy.
    Your help is greatly appreciated.Thanks.!

I have done this many times, using my DVD recorder which has VHS tape and a DVD recording facility. If you can find a friend with one, it is simple. Put the VHS tape in the VHS side of the machine and a DVD recordable (recordable many times) into the DVD slot. Use the machine's dubbing feature to copy to the DVD. After that, Finalise the DVD to allow it to be read by a computer (or a stand-alone DVD recorder). Use Toast to read the DVD and to create a QT movie of your recording. Then Import the QT movie into FCE.

  • Audio quality in video imported from VHS tapes

    Hi All,
I am trying to import old videos on VHS tapes, using a Canopus converter. The video is importing into iMovie just fine, but the audio has a loud buzzing sound that covers up the actual audio and is very annoying. Is there a way to extract the audio so I can clean it up using Sound Soap, then return the cleaned up version to iMovie?
    I am using iMovie '09, version 8.0.5.
I also use Final Cut Express, so maybe it would be better to just export it to FCE and then extract the video from there?
Please give as much step by step detail as possible for both approaches. In the iMovie "Help" it said to extract audio using advanced tools, but I couldn't find a command in any of the advanced tools to do that.
    Thanks.

Is there a way to extract the audio so I can clean it up using Sound Soap
iMovie 06 has some good filters for that.
I also use Final Cut Express, so maybe it would be better to just export it to FCE and then extract the video from there?
Final Cut Express (or iMovie 06) will give you better quality but it won't solve the buzzing noise. I also suspect a grounding problem.

  • How to dub (copy) VHS tapes to DVDs (DVR670KU)

Josh @ Toshiba Tech Support (800-631-3811) gave these instructions which worked for us.  Note: first VHS tape we tried ejected immediately.  Second VHS tape we tried stayed in and dubbing worked.
    - turn DVR670KU on
    - press DVD button
    - press Input Select button and choose "L1"
    - insert blank DVD
    - press Rec Mode button and choose mode (ex: SP)
    - press VCR button
    - insert VHS tape
    - press Play button
    - press Pause button
    - press Dubbing button
    - unit automatically begins VCR to DVD dubbing and displays "DB" on front panel
    - press Stop button when done

Note that I'm not Josh. I'm not a Toshiba employee.
Are you saying that you followed the steps in the original post, up to and including
"Press Dubbing button" and the VHS tape did not begin playing? If so, did you get
any kind of notification on the screen? The VHS tape should have been in pause mode,
and should start playing once the DVD Dubbing button is pressed on the remote.
Are you trying to dub a commercial tape? (which you can't do with the Toshiba DVR620 and
    DVR670)
What type of recordable DVD are you using? DVD-R, DVD-RW, DVD+R, DVD+RW? And it's
    either blank or unfinalized?
Can you play the tape when you are not in a DVD dubbing situation? That is, just insert
the VHS tape, press the VCR button on the remote, then press Play on the remote?

  • Eyetv 250 importing to imovie from vhs tapes

Okay Guys, I need a lot of help.
I am new to mac and I love it. I used to use Pinnacle Studio 10. I have a lot of old camcorder tapes which through the use of a tape adapter I am able to play camcorder tapes in the VCR. Then connect the VCR to elgato eye tv. I use the eye tv VHS assistant and play my movie into elgato.
I want to encode these movies and ultimatly put them on DVD.
So after I did the import I tried to drag the file into IMOVIE.
    I got this message..
The file could not be imported: The file “MacBook/Volumes/backup drive/EyeTV Archive/My VHS Tape - 9/10/06 9_21 PM.eyetv” can’t be imported; QuickTime couldn’t parse it: -43
I realized that the problem is the format that was imported was not compatible with imovie. I did more research and realized I that i could export the file to another format. There are several options, MPEG 4, Imovie, IDVD, etc.
What setting do I use to export the files? Also I want to combine several different sections of video. Can I do this. How can I export the section as a clip and drag the clip into imovie.
    Any advice would be great.

I just imported my first clip into iMovie today and it was captured from a Hi-8 Camcorder using Eyetv250. I used eyetv2 software's export option and chose "iMovie HD" as the format. I only did this because I thought I had to, knowing that it was going to be imported in iMovie HD6. This however created a 13+gig file from what was originally a 2.5gig file ! So , I don't think that was the right choice. I am going to go back and export using the Quicktime Movie setting toward the bottom of the export format option list (within eyetv2). That setting will produce a video export of the same size as the original.
Another thing I am going to try is to go into the "package" ( a package is basically a folder ) that is created by eyetv2 and try dropping the quicktime file directly into iMovie and see if it will import that way. If you go to the folder where your .eyetv file is placed (Eyetv archive) and right click on that .eyetv file you can choose to "show package contents". When you do that you will find a number of files, including a .mpg file which I assume contains the actual video footage which I would think iMovie can import directly. I'll come back here and post what happens but go ahead and try it.

  • Import format from VHS tape

I have old family movies on VHS tape that I want to edit on iMovie. What is the best CODEC format to have these tapes converted for use in iMovie?

If I was having a third party do it, I would probably ask them to use the DV codec.
Many of us  do this ourselves. I use the EyeTV Hybrid, which convert these to h.264 files. Others use the converters from Grass Valley, which convert to DV.

  • Song purchased from iTunes Store won't play on my computer

Several people have posted variations on this question but I haven’t been able to find a coherent explanation of, or fix for, the problem.
I have downloaded all my CDs into iTunes and synched them to my iPod. Everything downloaded from CDs plays fine.
I bought and downloaded one song from the iTunes store. It appears on playlists, but I cannot play it using iTunes. When I click on it I get the blue highlighting but nothing happens when I click on the “Play” arrow. (I can play it using Quick Time). My computer is authorized.
When I synch the iPod, I get the error message “(song) was not copied to the iPod (my iPod) because it cannot be played on the iPod.”
I noticed that the files copied from CDs are .m4a files and the file downloaded from the iTunes store that won’t play is an .m4p.
I think this is some kind of rights issue. Can anyone explain what the problem is? Thanks in advance.
    Dell   Windows XP

The trick of deleting the song to the Recycle Bin, dragging it to the Desktop and then back into iTunes worked. My guess is that because our computer was not authorized at the time of the purchase (this was our first purchase from the iTunes Store), the original file downloaded in a protected format. The computer has since been authorized, so the Recycle Bin ruse tricks iTunes into thinking it's a new file. I would still like to hear a confirmation of this from someone who knows though. Also, Apple should tell people to authorize their computers before making any purchases. It will save some confusion it seems.
    Thanks for the tip.
