Dude, BIOS won't recognize my HD!!

Hey guys check this out:
I got the K7N2G-ILSR about 2 months ago.
Running 512 megs of Samsung pc2700 ram,
430 Antec TruePower,
XP2100 oc'd to 2700,
Geforce4 Ti 4200.
Maxtor 80 Gig primary
WD 80 Gig slave
XP Pro SP1
My problem is with my hard drives. This is what happened about three times now: Every now and then , during POST test my BIOS will not recognize one of my hard drives.
In the past I use to unhook power cord, reset FSB to 100Mhz and clear BIOS. That use to solve the problem, and I had no data loss.
My rig did the same crap yesterday, but this time reset of BIOS ain't helping. I even switched the Maxtor drive which my board will not recognize to my backup box ( kt133, XP1700, 256 meg pc133). My backup box recognizes it during POST, but can not see it in Windows.
I used Windows Disk Manager to initalize and format the drive and I put it back to my original system ,but it still won't detect it. I'm freaking out, ttried just about everything short of buying new drive to fix this crap. This happened earlier with my WD 40 gig drive, which I ended up pulling out and donating to my backup rig. Works just fine there.
What figures?? Any clues....pleez help

SinDiesel666,
It does sound like a drive is failing.
Just to test, put one drive as primary master and the other drive as secondary master.  Do not put any slaves on and see what happens.
Good Luck,
Richard

  • Satellite A135-S2356 - BIOS won't recognize SATA Hard Drive

Hello everyone, hope you can help me out.
Got a used Satellite A135-2356, everything looks fine but BIOS won't recognize SATA HDD, shows no disk, downgraded BIOS to 1.30, no good, upgraded to 1.40, no good. BIOS has no options to change/test/detect HDD/SATA settings. Tested hard drive in another laptop and reads it fine. Got restore CD (Vista Basic 32) from Toshiba but since BIOS won't read HDD, can't do anything. Cleaned contacts, no good. This HDD must be too large or something for the board.
    *Hitachi HTS541612J9SA00, 120GB SATA, 5400 RPM*
    Thanks for the help!!!

    Hello Richie
To be honest I do not believe the HDD is too large for your notebook. I can imagine your notebook can handle with 160 GB HDDs too. Unfortunately there is no public document about HDD upgrade possibilities. I can imagine that ASP in your country has info about this stuff.
It is also pretty strange that HDD is not recognized properly. Long time ago I have had the same problem. Every time when I have used F12 at the start up HDD were not listed as bootable device. Solution in my case was to set BIOS to default settings. I believe your BIOS has already default settings but try to do this again.

  • Dv7 7115nr BIOS won't recognize and boot from SSD

I am trying to install a Crucial MX100 512GB SSD into my dv7 7115nr laptop.  I have tried cloning the my old drive to the new one and the BIOS won't boot from it.  I tried a fresh install of Windows 7 and got the message "windows cannot be installed to this disk. Ensure that the disk's controller is enabled in the computer's BIOS menu".  The BIOS on this computer is up to date, but seems severly limited in what it can do.  I have found no way to enable AHCI mode.  Cruicial claims that the SSD is compatible with this laptop.

I don't see the motherboard # or Bios revision in your info anywhere and that would help folks here narrow down the problems a little but here's a few ideas.
    1. Sounds like you have some kind of FIS2R board from your description. As you said, there are some fixes for incompatibilities between the Intel ICH5(R) and certain Maxtor drives in the latest Bios. If you follow the instructions in the link Wonkanoby provided above EXACTLY, it will work. I have done it this way myself with no OS installed. (btw, it says to create the boot floppy with 98se or ME.)
    2. You say the promise controller sees your drive but won't boot from it. Do you mean it won't boot after installing WindowsXP(2000) or does windows not see the drive after loading the Windows setup CD? Just in case you didn't know, did you hit F6 when starting the Windows setup disk and install the Promise SATA drivers from the floppy disk that came with your motherboard?
If this stuff is all obvious to you, I apologize. You just need to give a few more details.
    Hope you get it working!

  • Motherboard BIOS won't recognize 512MB memory for AGP?

Howdy, I just rebuilt my computer while upgrading a few parts and I have a question.  I have a MSI 865PE Neo2 Platinum motherboard and just removed my ATI Radeon 9800XT w/ 256MB of memory and installed a ATI Radeon X1650PRO with 512MB of memory.  When I set it up in the BIOS, it will only allow me to go as high as 256MB for the AGP.  Will this cause an issue?  Will it allow the full 512MB to be used, or will it limit the task to 256MB for the video card?
Is there possibly an update (flash the BIOS) that could fix this?
    Thanks,

    Will this cause an issue?
AGP aperture size is the amount of physical RAM allocated for use if your Vid Card RAM is filling up. You aren't setting the amount of RAM on your Vid card. So, no this will not cause an issue having the AGP aperture RAM at 256MB. I would recommend setting it for 64 or 128 MB.

You will have the full 512MB of your video RAM available.  Read above.

There's no need. There is nothing wrong.

  • Portege 3110ct: BIOS won't recognize new 20GB HDD

Just installed a P002608, 20GB hard drive in a Protege 3110ct, now the BIOS will not recogize the new hard drive.

    I own a 3110 in which I replaced the harddisk for a 40gb 2.5 HD without problems
So there must be another problem !
Did you test your HD in another laptop or USB-HD-case ??
If okay, check the jumper-setting ( must be "master" ) and be sure to update the bios to the last version ( look at the toshiba-website )
It's allways a problem to install a new OS on these small porteges, be sure to format your HD initially to FAT32, NTFS will not be recognized !
On this forum you can find a lot of information about this subject ( use search-function )

  • P965 won't recognize optical drives and can't undate BIOS thru LiveUpdate

Changed mobo's from amd x2 to P965 Platinum and all went well except that mobo won't recognize optical drives either through USB  or IDE channels. Heard I needed to upgrade the bios but every time I use Live Update it gives me a "Copy file fail" error. The floppy drive works fine for other tasks and copies fine. Changes floppies and no luck and same result. Tried at least 10 times.
    Any help appreciated. Thanks
    tg

Before I waste any more time let me try a clean install and see what happens. My old  program drive was an IDE drive and I will see what happens when I install on a SATA drive. I'll be back if problems arise. Thanks to all.

  • Rescue and Recovery won't recognize backup files.

I have backup files on a usb drive, an ultrabay drive and the main hard drive and it won't recognize any of them. Anyone else have this problem?
    -M

    manusoft, welcome to the forum,
attach the usb drive and then check it's recognised in BIOS. While you're in BIOS ensure that you optical drive is set as first boot device and place the boot disc you created in the optical drive. Save your settings and restart.
The system will boot to the R&R on the disc and in theory you should be able to then install the image.
Consideration; on the systems you move this image to the service partions will probably be no longer functional. I say probably as I've never done this with W7.
    Hope this helps

  • Fingerprint software won't recognize my fingerprints

    Hi,
I installed window 7 64bit (using upgrade cd from the upgrade to win7 program)
    Installed all updates (windows)
However, the fingerprint software won't recognize my fingerprints -.-
The first two are fine, but the third one never works, it is the same story for all my fingers...
I HAD the program working perfectly before I reinstalled my OS
For some reason I seem to recall the same problem last time I had to reinstall, don't remember what i did to fix it
    any advice?
Thank you for your time and help!
    edit:
    To add some details:
    It was working before
The hardware is not the issue (it reads my fingers)
It's software or just my DNA changes my fingerprints -.-
I don't remember what software/version I downloaded last time, but I search online on this site and found the newest software
Also, the face program is not working either
It was working before I reinstalled OS
Is it just me or all the security programs just not liking me -.-

    Thanks for responding
Just want to point out I mention clean install
So point 1 wasn't too useful
I also mention I updated everything (windows and downloading the newest already)
And since the problem is not being able to enroll fingerprints, point 3 isn't valid either
after a night of no sleep being trying to get the little piece of hardware to work-.-
Here's my solution, which I hope will help people
    Things to note:
    1. Toshiba fingerprint utility (1.02 something) and truesuite (version 2.0.0.57. something) are two different programs
On the tecra download site (canada) (andall window 64bit fingerprint I found on the US site) the program is Toshiba fingerprint utility
It has a few neat features such as file locking, auto ie password
However, it has the major problem of giving you a tough time to enroll (after 30 minutes of just swiping my finger, it FINALLY worked..for ONE finger -.-, wasn't able to repeat the process with other fingers -.-)
Also it is "buggy" and it slows down your system IMO
    2. Using windows update (keep pressing updated after the first few times)
You get an optional Authen Tec update
Don't choose it, if you like the file locking part of the Toshiba program or u will be like me, unable to log in at ALL (even using password)
If you do mess up and can't log in at all (not being able to click or press enter for your password), go to safe mode, and use system restore
(for some reason turning off services/start up using msconfig didn't work :S suppose it would work using command line -.-)
    3. You will see that there are now two softwares
first one is the toshiba fingerprint (default)
second one is the "updated" one
    Uninstall everything (both programs)
    Restart
Use windows updated again and install the new one
    If should work
    and by chance it doesn't
Go to Control/hardware/bio and turn it off, click apply, and turn it back on again
The "new" version is really a downgrade
It works well, recongized my fingerprints with no problems
    No system tray/startup program
    And IMO it's a lot stable/faster
However there is NO other feature, no file locking (if u have files locked...don't update)
Another thing to add, it doesn't conflict with comodo defense (the toshiba one does)
So bascially, after losing a night's sleep over something really trival...
don't update, stick with the "old" default version and add the updated version in windows updated in the ignore section
The old version will eventually get one of your fingerprints, plus u get the file locking part (the old version is basically the paid version of the new upgrade version)
OR don't download from toshiba website and use the window update version (the stripe down version, where u need to pay to have the features of the old version

  • Logic installation on second machine...  won't recognize xskey

    Hey folks,
Just got me a new imac to accompany my aging powerbook. I already have Logic Pro 7 running on the powerbook, which was installed as 6 platinum and then updated. I want to install 6 platinum on my new imac and then update it to Pro 7, but as of right now, after installing the program, it won't recognize the XSKey. I suppose this is because it's already licensed to another machine. But I thought I could run this on another machine?
Anyone wanna help a frustrated dude who's convinced this should work? This should work!!!
Any suggestions are appreciated and welcome.
    Thanks in advance
    C

Justin - you mean Apple replaced your blue key with an Apple one, but included authorisations for Logic versions prior to 7?
Yes. I was using Logic P before the XSKey existed - it would be a really bad move to not support that compatability for users of older versions, IMO. It's not like they would be granting free software since Pro consolidated all softwares.
If so, that's good news, because I'm sure they've stated in the past that they will not generate authorisations for versions before 7.
I don't know what their policy is now, this happened shortly after 7 was released ( emagic.de still existed ) - transistion phase may have ended some time ago...(?) - I wouldn't guarantee this possibility.
It does mean then that if I ever killed my key, I could keep my PC5, Mac5, Mac6Pro and Mac7Pro authorisations intact on a replacement key, which is reassuring.
Since the XSKey# is unique, you would have an entirely new set of auth #s - if they don't support that anymore ( based on what you have read... ) - I wouldn't be 100% certain that the auths would be delivered in your scenario. But, it was possible at one time during Apple branded Logic. Some hope there.

  • [VIA] MSI KT6V BIOS doesn't recognize my Maxtor 160GB SATA HD

I bought new Maxtor DiamondMax 160GB SATA 7200RPM harddisk (6L160M0). For being able to install Windows on the new harddisk, I used the SATA RAID driver (VT6420/VT8237) floppy, that came with the motherboard and everything went fine. Now I have installed Windows but BIOS doesn't recognize the new harddisk at all. When I check the properties of the harddisk in Windows the size is correct (~160GB).
System is working fine, but I don't dare to split the partition, before I'm positive it won't cause any problems.
Should I flash BIOS, install new sata drivers or nothing?
Motherboard MSI KT6V VIA KT600 chipset

I understand what you mean, kalasilma, but a SATA drive is not recognized by the BIOS in the same way as a PATA drive. In fact, you aren´t going to see any drive information in the BIOS at all. The situation is the same in Win XP. You can see the HD in My Computer, but despite that, you can´t get information about the HD in device manager as you would with a PATA drive. The SATA interface is much more like a software type of interface than the much older PATA interface. It´s a little bit like the old days, when you had to manually configure a HD even in BIOS in order to have it properly recognized. With that in mind, the situation is much more satisfying, as the HD is visible and the size is correctly recognized at least in Windows
In a near future the situation is most likely going to be much better when it comes to BIOS recognizing SATA drives, but with these "beta" testing motherboards of ours, the only thing we can do is to be satisfied with our drives beeing recognized by Windows, using software drivers loaded at bootup. In fact your system wouldn´t be booting at all if the drive wasn´t recognized, since the drivers are loaded from the same HD. I think you can feel completly safe with the situation, since I have seen PATA drives beeing incorrectly recognized by Windows at installation. I had one 200GB HD that appeared as only 130GB no matter what I would do. I finaly partitined it and formatted the boot partition and installed Win. I used Partition Magic to locate and format the "lost" partiton under Windows. I think you are ready to go...

  • ITunes won't recognize iPod Nano (1GB, 1st generation)

I have been having problems Sync'ing my iPod nano with iTunes, however, the more I read help articles and follow the steps, the worse the problem gets. (I'm on a PC using Windows XP)
I've gotten to the point where I updated my iPod software in Disk mode (up until then it was being recognized only in Disk mode), but when iTunes failed to recognize it when not in Disk mode I preceded to restore my iPod to factory settings, as instructed in the help articles.
Now, up until then, I still had music in my iPod, and I was being able to charge it and listen to my music even though I couldn't sync the iPod anymore. After restoring, I not only lost my music (which I was aware of), but it STILL did not fix my problem. So I started to get annoyed.
I then noticed that my iPod was being recognized by My Computer, just not by iTunes, so I began to perform the steps indicated in the following article:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93716
I restarted my iPod service - no luck
I removed iTunes - no luck
I emptied my Temp directory and restarted...
That's when iTunes stopped recognizing my iPod altogether, not even in Disk mode. Not only that, but it seems to have affected the iPod itself, since it won't turn off or exit Disk mode anymore. So now I'm scared of going though with any more steps on whichever "help" articles and making the problem even worse than it already is (if that's possible).
The only other information I can provide is that windows is still recognizing my iPod, no problem, and when I connect my iPod, iTunes actually launches... but DOESN'T recognize a thing. So I ran a diagnostics using iTunes and here's what I got (iPod diagnostics):
Microsoft Windows XP Professional Service Pack 2 (Build 2600)

    Connected Device Information:
IPOD (H:\), iPod nano running firmware version 1.3.1
All green lights, and as you can see, according to iTunes, NO PROBLEM! Except that it won't recognize the iPod that the disgnistics says exists and reads... ?!?!?!
If anyone could shed some light on my situation, i would be VERY greatful!

My IPod Nano will charge when connected to my computer but it won't come up on My Computer or iTunes. So I can't update the songs. I've already tried reseting the iPod. Does anybody know what I can do to fix it.

I changed my Apple ID to my new email address successfully for the iTunes and App store but it won't work for iCloud and it won't recognize my password. I read that this can't be done. How am I supposed to get into iCloud? I plan on getting rid of my old email address which is my old Apple ID so how is that going to work?

Same question Wish someone had replied!
I changed my Apple ID to my new email and now cannot find any way to access icloud. Unfortunately I had allowed icloud to hijack my airbook files, so of course I am afraid I will lose them tomorrow when I exchange my iphone for a new one and cannot keep an icloud account i cannot access. What a poor sync system! Really atypical for apple!
