Duel layer breakpoints

I'm looking for some information on Duel-layer break points. Specifically,
1. I have a highly interactive disk (250 menus, 200 scripts, 50 tracks) that has quizes, games, videos and a .pdf as rom content. Is it best to keep the menu jumps and scripts on one layer and video on another, or should I try to keep as much on the 1st layer and bury the less important material on the second layer? I have created a similar disc in the past, but was able to keep all but one long track on the 1st layer.
2. Does rom content have to go on a specific layer? I seem to remember reading somewhere that it has to go on the 1st layer.
3. I have multiple jumps from almost everwhere on my DVD, from tracks to scripts to menus --almost everything has several connections. Will this cause a problem for setting the breakpoint, should I use automatic, and what does automatic do?
Any suggestions or links would be aprriciated.
Thanks
Jason

In response to MartinR - I am using the following:
MacBook Pro: MacBookPro6,1
OS X  Mountain Lion - 10.8.4
I used a VCR hooked up to my MBP through an ION VIDEO2PC, I converted all of them to mp4 after I edited all of the snow and junk out of the videos in iMovie - They are all now mp4 files
iDVD version 7.1.2
Memorex DL DVD+R
I still can burn single layer DVDs, BUT they are doing the same thing when I try to make multiples, making copies through iDVD after the intial one is burned.  So I have to cancel out of the burning process,  it usually works and take about 18 mins. vs the 2-3 hrs. that it takes the inital DVD to burn
If it means anything I have/had all of my video files on an external 2TB hard drive and now I copy the files I plan to use back to the main drive on the MBP to see if that helps things
In response to Courcoul - I did a Get Info on the blank DL DVD and it said 6,148 bytes (8 KB on disk) for 1 item
I value both of your opinions, thank you both for responding, tell me what you think could be the hang-up on all of this since I gave you more info.  If you need more info the make a better decision just let me know.

get this message when burning a duel layer disc. Don't know what to do.

It sounds like a hardware issue message (there are other messages that can also crop up due to bit rates, layer breaks, etc.)
What is the drive? Is it the stock drive with a G4? It may not be rated to burn DL DVDs (actually do not recall any G4 with stock DL burning) you can double check here http://everymac.com will have a list of what is standard
If it seems that the drive can burn DL Discs
1.) Try trashing DVD SP prefs to see if it helps
    2.) Try cleaning the drive
3.) Make sure the firmware is updated for the drive - are these new DVDs? Your drive may not be able to write to them (if they did before than 1 & 2 may help) With the higher speed media older drives cannot write to them
    4.) Switch media

  • Duel Layer DVD in iDVD

I am using iDVD to convert VHS to DVD and want(ed) to use Duel Layer DVDs so I could put more video on one DVD. My problem is that at 30 to 45 mins. from completion during the Multiplexing process the DVD pops out and the program says DONE but it also says it has 30 mins. to go.  When you put the DVD back in, the DVD is blank.  What do I need to do.  Is it a problem with iDVD or just using the Duel Layer DVDs.  By the way, I have a MacBook Pro 17".

  • Why does "Please insert a duel-layer disk" pop up when I'm half way through burning a DVD in FCP X?

I work for a Sports Media company and it is important to burn our games to DVD as quickly as possible. Everytime FCP X is halfway through the burning of the DVD (each game is about 1-1.5 hours long) that pop up about the duel-layer disk comes up. What is that? I never had a problem doing this before. Also what other kind of DVD is there? What is better to use? Thanks a lot!

No catch that I know of - just more content (and more expensive). I don't use FCP X, but is there a screen where you can check the size of your project? In iDVD, I can see my project here:
With that I can keep track of the size.

  • Layer breakpoint & 170 menus

I’m creating a interactive DVD including lots of DVD ST PRO menus, and no video tracks ... its apex 170 menus linking to etch other....
My "DVD9" includes two different presentations that has no link or connection to the other presentation!
    Q) My question is can I assign the DVD9 "layer breakpoint" so that I have one presentation on etch layer???? (Good question)
(The Assets to presentation one is placed in one separate DVD ST PRO asset folder, and the assets to presentation two is in another seperat folder...)
BTW. Any problems having so many menus on two different layers? (read somewhere that the DVD standard has a limit at 999 menus) but how about layers and so many (170) menus :O) ?

Ther is a limit in the number of menus and the size of the menus in each VTS
    10,000 Menus (page 45 PDF)
Page 566 provides information on how big each menu VOB can hold - 1 Gig The menu VOBs are VST_(The Number of the VTS).0.VOB
If your project is so large that it is Dual Layer and has nothing but menus, you will need to split the menus among different VTS (Page 588)
The issue arises in trying to find a DL Break Point, DVD SP looks for a marker in a track. You may want to take a look an another application such as dvdafteredit(.com) to be able to place the marker properly.
You can try building the project and see if it finds a break point, but I do not think it will (for some reason I thought I read somewhere that one of the newer versions of DVD SP, maybe the newest Universal Binary, allows for more precision in the break point other than a track, I could be wrong.)
One way that may be the easiest approch is build the DVD and take a look at the VTS folders and try to estimate where the break point will fall and place a track there with some markers. Depending on the size of the menus you may need to move some around into different VTS.
Are these all Motion menus or standard menus? If standard menus you should be able to get 170 menus on a DVD-5. Even if these are motion menus, you may still be able to do so. How long do the menus run?
One last thing to keep in mind is that to improve performance on DVD Playback, try to keep the menus that jump to one another in the same VTS. In all likelihood you will not be able to do so completely and may have to jump to another VTS for some menu.

I can burn to a CD or Single layer DVD but not to a Dual  Layer DVD.

    Hi bullfrog,
The title indicates duel layer and your optical drive supports double layer.
What happens when you try to burn to Double Layer media?  The specifications for your PC do indicate DVD Double Layer write once media.
Download Imgburn (it's a freebie) and use it to determine what media types are supported by your optical drive.
This link will show what to look for with Imgburn. Look at the Device Capabilities.
You can use Imgburn to search for an optical drive firmware update.
HP also has firmware updates for optical drives listed under VISTA software.
Generally Verbatim optical media has better compatibility with optical drives compared to cheaper brands.

  • External Plextor Duel Layer DVD Writer  or  Superdrive

Still looking at Macbook 2.0 with Superdrive
Already own a fast Plextor duel layer external burner.
Will Macbook and all programs be able to use/access this drive, as well as / just like a Superdrive ?
Other than the convienience of a Superdrive being built into Macbook, I can't see any benefit downgrading to a Superdrive.
    DO YOU ?
    Macbook 1.83   Mac OS X (10.4.7)   Combo Drive, 2G, 120G HD

well when I buy something and I have to choose between features that can't be upgraded later like processor, or in this case Superdrive or Optical Drive. I always just get the best one. unless moneys an issue thats different. but if your not necessarily on a budget get the best. you won't regret having something you might not end up using much. but getting the minimum you later might end up wishing you had it. I find having a superdrive handy for when I go to a friends place or go out of town and need to burn something it really comes in handy.

  • Using Compressor to Export for DVD Duel Layer

I want to Compress for a DVD DL, but all the setting i see in compressor are set for a DVD-5 (4.7 G). How do i get it to be set of a DVD DL (8.5 G)? Please Help

    Jared,
There are several things to consider when creating a dual-layer disc. First, the first-layer needs to be larger than the second, even if by only one bit. DVDSP4 has the ability to automatically place the layer break in the appropriate place however, it's best to help the process by placing "cell" markers in the timeline at about the halfway mark of the data on your encode. This will help DVDSP find an appropriate place to create the layer-break.
Also, you can't use the entire 8.5GB on the disk; just like HDD's a portion of the actual data-space on the disk is taken up by metadata and MPEG-2 core files during the encode.
To really get a handle on how this all works - and to help with any troubleshooting I'd highly suggest these two books:
DVD Studio Pro 4; Martin Sitter and Adrian Ramseier and; Compressor 3 Quick Reference Guide, Brian Gary (who is a regular poster on these forums).
    Best wishes.

  • Duel Layer Picture Slideshow

    Hey,
I'm trying to make a high quality picture slideshow with duel layers...so a background behind the important images to make it look more professional (rather than a simple black background).
I know iMovie HD 6 has some premade "themes" where I just input the pictures into already made backgrounds sequences. Are there any other programs out there that do the same / something similar? I'm not happy with the way iMovie deteriorates the quality of the images and I want to also have more variety to choose from for the backgrounds.
Or are there any plug-ins for FCP that might work?
Thanks for any help / suggestions!

is livetype useful for picture editing? i haven't really used that program before, do you know of a website or someplace that would help me get started?
    thanks!

  • "Layer 1 does not start with a new cell" replicator error

    Hi All,
I recently sent a dual layer +R DVD off to our replication house and their system is returning a message that says: "Layer 1 of DVD-Video does not start with a new cell".
I know from reading that the dual-layer breakpoint must be set to the end of a cell, but what does the word "cell" translate into for DVDSP4?
I had the DVD DL+R set to Automatic and Non-Seamless for output for the break point. Should I just try setting the break point manually at the beginning or ending of a track that would be dubbed as just a little more than half the size of the content? (I know in OTP, the Layer 0 has to be bigger than Layer 1)
    Please Help!
    Cheers,
    Dusty

Thanks both of you for your replies.
Eric, I am currently exporting DDPs to send in to the replicator. I also emailed them asking if they accept this format for delivery. (Which I would hope they would, as it is, an answer to DLT of sorts) Thanks for bringing this up, DDP is new to me, as this is our first DL project for replication.
Drew, to answer your reply, yes I have two viable markers (chapter markers) that show up in black, not grayed out, in the tab you mentioned under formatting. I chose manual break point selection for this last disc I burned and chose chapter 4 of that track. (chapter 4 and chapter 5 of track 6 are only options) I have to assume that the "automatic" setting was selecting chapter 5, as it had to see that as the last viable marker available to select, as described in the DVDSP4 manual.
DVDSP4 says that all markers are considered cells- Or actually that tracks are cells and that the markers within them make up more cells. So my question, outside of DDP option, would be, "what truly constitutes a cell boundary in DVDSP4?" Is it the markers within the tracks or the beginning or ends of the tracks themselves?
As a side note, I burned the disc that received the error, "Layer 1 doesn't start with a new cell" from an IMG i created from DVDSP4 through Disk Utility. Word is that IMG's somehow don't include breakpoint information.
So at this point I don't know if it is the IMG or the fact that DVDSP4 wants the break at one of two possible chapter markers in track 6.
(Some more background- this is a TV show season DVD, with thirteen tracks of video, each with 12-14 chapter markers a piece.)
Any more thoughts to help clear the air on what constitutes a true new cell boundary?
Thanks sooo much Eric and Drew, I know this a long read.
    Cheers,
    Dusty

  • Dual layer dvd burning

    Hi,
I need some help regarding dual layer dvd burning.
I never burned a dual layer dvd before and am going to in the next few days for a big movie screening. So I better get this right.
How do I set the layer break? do I just set it to be automatic or should I set a chapter in the track? if yes, then where do I suppose to put the chapter.
Is there any advise regarding dual layer burning ? so that I have less possibilities of messing things up.
Its a 115 mins movie. Im planning to encode it with 6.5 avg 8 max.
Is it safe to put a lot of chapters in?
I won't have dvd menu. I will just set it to play straight away.
    thanks.
    Jack

I'm not an expert in the least but I have worked with duel layers and let me tell you than can be a real s.o.b. I'm not sure what the scoop is on them but they tend to glitch out while your burning. I made three and 1 worked perfect the other two not at all and for some reason the 1 that did work only played on about half of the DVD players they were played on. When I got it into a DVD player that worked the chapter markers were not a problem. I had four seperate segments that were linked up and played fine. We used this for a screening in front of about 400 people.
Our feature was about the same length as yours so after the screening we decided to just take the quality down a little (which you can't even tell) and put it on a normal DVD R. We saved a ton in duplication.
Setting the Duel Layer is pretty easy, it's all in the inspector under the disc/volume tab but make sure that in your outline window the main DVD at the top is highlighted. I don't think it matters if you have a chapter in the middle of the footage or anything like that. You can just link up one long stream if needed. Be sure to try out the DVD on the actual player you are going to use. Good luck.

  • Any way to get only new updates for disconnected WSUS?

    Greetings,
I have two servers set up. One is online, getting the new updates correctly. The other one is offline where I successfully was able to transfer the approve updates from the online WSUS.  My work requires me to get new updates and transfer the new updates
from the online to offline WSUS once in a while. The problem is that  I cannot use any external hard drive for data transfer due to security reasons. I can only use DVD of which we only have duel layer (8.5GB max) as our highest.
My question is any way to get the newest updates only and be able to plug them in the WSUScontent folder in the offline WSUS? I rather not have to span 7-8 DVDs for a 61GB folder of all the updates each time. I would love any method or advice that can
be offered. I'm limited on what third-party software I can use as well unfortunately.
    Thanks,

You could probably work something out, using ROBOCOPY and it's various comparison operators (such as Archive bit, or date/timestamp).
You'd need to have the "last file set prepared for the offline server" available, to do the comparison. Then, tinker with the comparison operators to determine the set which works for you. This should give you the "delta", and then you could
burn the "delta" files/folders to your media.
Depending on your OS in use, ROBOCOPY might already be built-in for you (so no third-party software needed)

  • Powerbook Doesn't Accept a Blank DVD-R

I just want to burn a movie I made and when I put in the DVD-R it waits about 30 seconds then it ejects it. I've burnt CD's and DVD's before so I know it works.
    Any help?
    Thanks

A few questions just to confirm:
The discs are single layer DVD-R? Not DVD+R or duel layer discs?
Will the drive mount and play either domestic or home-burned DVD movies?
Do data DVDs and CDs mount?
Have you tried a different brand of discs?
It is difficult to determine the problem on a brief description. Post back with your answers and the problem should be easily determined and 'possibly' solved.
