Duke Dollars Not Working

I tried to assign Duke Dollars to my last post. It says that I have 50 dollars to assign. Whne I try to assign them I get a 500 Server error. i kept trying and it eventually displayed a stack trace stating the user has insufficient dollars. What Gives?

Duke Stars Not Working ?

Is Duke Stars not working for anyone else? I havn't been able to use them for almost 2 weeks. I get a server error page every time I try to click on a link to do something with Duke Stars (add them to a topic, remove them from a topic, reward someone who posted). I have tried using the forums feedback to get help from sun, but now its been almost 2 weeks and all I have heard back is an email saying "I will pass this message along". Strange that getting a hold of someone from Sun for forum issues is so inconvenient and unreliable. Does anyone know what I can do to fix this? Here is the message on the Server Error page that I am getting:

What matters isn't if we care, but how we act in spite of it and to what degree we actively pursue them ... or anything else for that matter - does it cause us to loose site of more important things? ... do we loose focus on the main thing ... helping others and trying to learn ourselves?

I signed up in august 2001, and I have not received any like it said i would, just for logging in every month.
Why?

I read through the FAQs and they say I'm supposed to get 10 Duke Dollars each month as long as I login at least once a month. I've been logging in and helping others with the little bit of knowledge I have (I'm still a beginner).. but I'm not getting any new Duke Dollars..
Is anyone else having the same problem?

Java code not working in Jsp page....

I like to say to myself "there is no magic" when I come to a perplexing situation, today is one of those times.
The following code when executed from the java class retrieves all the specified objects from the database and displays the requested attributes without issue:

: the **exact same** code as displayed above when run in a Jsp only lists the values for the "body.getId()" and "body.getType()" methods...for a reason I can't discern, "body.getLoad()" and "body.toXml()" return empty strings in the Jsp. Everything else returns as when the code is run from the class. Both "getLoad()" and "toXml()" return strings but behind the scenes use StringBuffer objects that are converted to Strings...getId() returns an int and "getType()" returns a String also, but for whatever reason (to repeat) only those two attributes come through IN THE JSP, in the class ALL attributes are retrieved without a problem...so, what is wrong with Jsp? Java? I get no error message what so ever, just empty strings for the two specified method returns...what am I overlooking. I am running the embedded Jsp engine of the Jetty Http Server that I've incorporated into my application, which uses the latest Jsp version.
Any help on this issue would be greatly appreciated.

SwarajSwaraj, I apologize if I was taken to be abrassive with my last comment, I myself am a java engineer so I have no animosity, as for your request to copy the entire code it is no longer needed I have solved the problem and the solution follows just incase anyone else runs into similar issues. It indeed had nothing to do with StringBuffer working improperly but rather it was how I was getting my dbase connection.
As many of you who have developed applications with jdbc support to popular dbase vendors may already know, a connection must be established to the database by specifying various parameters, namely the name of the jdbc connection driver classes for the desired vendor (eg. "com.microsoft.jdbc.sqlserver.SQLServerDriver" for MS Sql Server instances) and the driver specific db connection url. Of course the driver classes must be available on the class path so that they can be accessed. Without these parameters the connection will not be initialized..well it turns out my "bug" was caused by my inadvertently ommitting the connection parameters in my Jsp, you might wonder "but you said it executed fine in the jsp except for the missing "getBody()" and "toXml()" results..how could it even execute at all if you didn't establish a connection?"
The answer is I designed the application to use a default connection driver class (the jdbc odbc bridge driver) and a default connection url (one that is tied to my testing instance of MsSqlServer2000) it turns out that the jdbc odbc bridge is very light weight...it lacks support for certain very useful MsSql datatypes namely "ntext", I use the "ntext" type for fields that can grow to any size (stylesheet code,xml code...etc.) but the bridge driver doesn't support "ntext" BUT rather than throw an exception error like proper error handling would require it silently eats the request (very very bad) ...this exacerbated the problem I had significantly (had it thrown an error I would have known immediately that the connection was using the wrong driver and url and fixed it sooner) as it is ...I was led down blind allies thinking my code was faulty, (which it wasn't strictly speaking ..I was just missing some extra code to account for the possibility that the bridge driver is instantiated by accident) so after adding the following code above the Jsp code shown previously:

:The code worked perfectly. The "DBConfig" class does exactly that..allowing me to pass in connection attributes including the type of vendor "DBConfig.MSSQL_VID", (I have built in support for 5 popular vendors so far), the dbase host name "xiassql" and the port "1433" , then we build the url using the specified attributes and the connection is complete. After adding the code above the Jsp returned all the retrieved values perfectly. So, when testing applications that enable backend dbase connections if you get seemingly identical code behaving differently from class to Jsp, suspect an issue relating to your connection url and classes (assuming you have multiple support and a default value as I do in my app.) also any changes in the execution context from class to Jsp can cause similar errors (like not declaring the same classes at the top of the Jsp file , or less likely using an outdated Jsp engine!)

First off, dont worry about the CLASSPATH stuff, Sun fixed that in 1.2.
Anyway, you need to see if the ArrayList class is in the class library you used to
compile it, is it in the java.util package? If its not, try looking into other packages.
If it is, try upgrading your JRE version to 1.3 or 1.4

SDN Forum points vs Sun Forum Duke Dollars

I believe that a points system is a great way to encourage participation by the community in problem solving.
With the points system in SDN, however, there is room for abuse, for example, by having people you know award points to you on threads.
I personally like the points reward system (Duke Dollars) on Sun's Developer Forums. In this scheme, you work with credits. Every user is given a certain amount of points (Duke Dollars) when they join. When you post a question, you can assign a number of Duke Dollars up front from your available credit as a reward to entice responses. You can also accumulate more Dollars by answering threads which have Dollars assigned.
Every month, Sun gives a gift to the user who has accumulated the most points.
I'm not sure that this solves the problem of users not assigning points for valid help, but, because users are working with limited credit, it does force them to be careful when assigning points, and prevents abuse as that mentioned above.
I would like to hear what other people think about this scheme. Perhaps there are aspects I have not considered.

Actually Craig went into each of the forums and published a "rules of engagement". Maybe that kind of a "sticky note" post would be the place to remind people about the inappropriateness of redundant questions (across various forums) and the confusion and poor sporting behavior associated with "copied" answers. I can ping Craig with that suggestion to add text if you think it makes sense to "remind" people in each of the respective forums.
Or..to be a little more provocative, we could suggest that community members who have a good track record of participation, collaboration, and exemplary attitude be given the moderator rights in forums where the activity volume might be too overwhelming for an SAP moderator alone to manage and given the rights to move content to a more appropriate thread.
This is what I meant about "self-policing". Also, perhaps the moderators (internal as well as SAP) could identify themselves in a sticky post and invite participants in those designated threads to track "abuses" or issues, thus identifying them and hopefully resolving them publically.
Strange, it reminds me that in old, Puritanical, America, of the 17th century community culprits were subjected to a public dunking or stocks when they broke the law. The purpose being that public condemnation sent a clear message to other "would be" misbehavers.... and thus deterred further bad conduct.
While a rather radical and unpleasant method it was an open way of dealing with abuses to the system.
Perhaps others can offer less extreme and more effective suggestions here

10 Duke Dollars if you help me set up tutorial

After several posts to this forum w/o any success, I am now offering 10 Duke Dollars to get this problem fixed:
I am trying to work through the j2ee tutorial on a Windows XP platform, specifically the servlets section which requires me to build the bookstore1 example (chapter 11). I am having problems with using asant to compile and package the project. I have been at a complete standstill for about a week now because I cant get the example to run - Im tearing my hair out, so plese help me!!!
The command I am using is asant create-bookstore-war. This throws about 80 compilation errors because classes referenced within the source files are not found . I therefore know that the compiler cant find the classes (suggesting CLASSPATH problems), but I dont know what settings Im supposed to be using.
Some info for you:
I tried adding JAVA_HOME and J2EE_HOME to the environemt variables, pointing to the java sdk (inside the app server) and J2EE application server installation location respectively. This didnt work. Initially I had JAVA_HOME pointing to a seperate installation of the SE SDK I had, but since discovering the SDK inside the appserver, I uninstalled J2EE, J2SE SDK, and re-installed J2EE, using the enclosed sdk as JAVA_HOME. None of this solved my problem.
I think I know now that the environment variables are not anything to do with the tutorial - this is just for the locations of the J2EE and J2SE SDK command path files - is this correct? In which case, using J2EE_HOME and JAVA_HOME is just for shorthand declarations in the environemtn/system variables?
(As you can probably guess by now I have spent a lot of time trying out different things!!!).
I also tried setting the j2ee.home and j2ee.tutorial.home attributes in the build.propoperties file located in <INSTALL>/j2eetutorial14/examples/common. This didnt work. I also tried setting the admin username property in this file, and the corresponding password in the password file (cant remember offhand what its called). Again, no luck.

InetAddress Timeout (Duke Dollars Available)

Hi people, am making a program that needs to change IP Addresses to domain names, in most cases this code works fine

            }However, many of the ip addresses will not find a domain name. it will take 5 seconds to discover this where as it will take no time at all to discover a correct domain name if one can be found. is there any way that i can timeout this action if it takes over 20 milliseconds to find a name.

But as alluded to, the duke dollars are utterly worthless. If I wanted 10 more dukes to add to my pile, I could (but wouldn't) just create another login ID, post a fake "question", answer myself with this ID, and award them to "myself".

[XP64] Microphone does not work in WinXP 64

Hi,In Windows XP 64bit my microphone does not work, tried it in Ventrilo 2., Skype and even in the Windows Recorder. The computer don't detect any sound. Offcourse?I have selected the microphone in the recordering section in the Windows volume panel and the volume at maxium. Also in the volume panel under playback the microphone is not mute, set to max volume. I have also installed WinXP 32bits and here it works OK with exactly the same settings. Thats why I think it is because of my Soundcard driver, I have installed the latest driver from this site. I have a SoundBlaster X-Fi Fatality. Is there anyone with a X-Fi soundcard with the same problem or anyone where the microphone works in WinXP 64bit's Or is it a known problem?Please help me

Hi Theicewarrior,?Creative support has been aware of this issue for quite some time (6+ months, maybe even a year). The 4GB+?RAM driver/addressing issues are not a priority or they would have been addressed quite some time ago.
Presumably this is due to functional Vista drivers for the masses being a higher priority than the relati'vely few of us with 4GB+ RAM and an X-Fi.
While the X-Fi?is a great card, my only wish was that the vendor was forthright about this product not functioning with certain configurations. It is my feeling that?making an effort to help?customers choose?products that will work with their configurations would result in satisfied and repeat customers?and a better bottom line?as opposed to?eeking a few extra dollars out of a slightly larger customer base and?who are then left unsatisfied with a product and unwilling to buy a company's products in the future.Message Edited by Foddan on 07-9-20070:45 AM

File - Export from Preview, iPhoto etc does not work

Lately, normal operations from OSX-programs are not working as expected on my MacBook Air mid-2013 running OSX 10.8.5. I can reproduce in PreView and iPhoto that operations like File, Export and File, Duplicate do not work - there is just no response.

Back up all data. Don't continue unless you're sure you can restore from a backup, even if you're unable to log in.
This procedure will unlock all your user files (not system files) and reset their ownership and access-control lists to the default. If you've set special values for those attributes on any of your files, they will be reverted. In that case, either stop here, or be prepared to recreate the settings if necessary. Do so only after verifying that those settings didn't cause the problem. If none of this is meaningful to you, you don't need to worry about it.
Step 1
If you have more than one user account, and the one in question is not an administrator account, then temporarily promote it to administrator status in the Users & Groups preference pane. To do that, unlock the preference pane using the credentials of an administrator, check the box marked Allow user to administer this computer, then reboot. You can demote the problem account back to standard status when this step has been completed.
Enter the following command in the Terminal window in the same way as before (triple-click, copy, and paste):

I have an ipod touch 3rd generation and the whole touch screen is not working.

I have a 32gb ipod which I bought for fifty dollars and when i bought it had a pretty baddly cracked screen but thing is it worked fine. Every part of the screen worked fine; it was as senstive where the screen was cracked as the areas of the screen that were not cracked. I dropped it a couple times from like two or three feet on two a hard wood floor about four times all it did was make the cracks on the screen a little worse. Then one day I dropped it from about a foot and now the whole touch screen is not working does anyone know why this is. They told me at the ipod store to get a new one would be 130 to trade mine in. But the thing is I very mechanically inclined and I am very good with electrionics; I was planing on buying the glass for fifty bucks and putting it on myself because I read how to do it and I am more then capapble of doing it. But now since the touch screen is now working; do I need a new screen along with a new glass? See the thing is because I think both those part cost 120 together. Which would not be worth me doing that when I can go to the ipod store and they would trade me a new one for 130 bucks. But the issue is, they told me at the ipod store they would have to look and see how damaged the ipod is to see if they will exchange it. My screen is severly cracked; also I have a dent that is a half inch long and 1/8th inch deep in the back of my ipod and its very scracthed up; do you thing an ipod store would exchange it in the condition it is in. Also has anybody had this problem before and I was wondering if it would be possible for me to take it apart and fix it my self without buying any new parts.

If I were you, I would pay the $130 for a replacement. Then you can be sure that it has all the working parts it needs.
