Dumb compressor geometry question

I have a compressor setting all created, and it needs to be able to handle either 16:9 or 4:3 input. I want it to output 640x__ where _ is whatever the proper height is.
I've tried specifying only 640 in the setting, that obviously didn't work.
Suggestions?

Correct, you have to choose a height. Compressor will not adjust itself based on the input. You will have to create one setting for 16:9 source files and one for 4:3 source files.

  • Dumba*s newbie question :)

So, I'm embarrassed to ask this but here goes...
I've been having problems with Safari and figured that somehow it got corrupted. Therefore, I felt the best option was to get rid of Safari by moving it to the trash and downloading a new version from apple.com. Easy enough, yeah? So here's my D.A. question: when I go to the downloads page on the apple site they only give two download options: 1) Safari for those running Windows XP and/or Vista; 2) Safari + Quicktime for those running XP and/or Vista. Can't see where to download the version for...uh, well, Mac OS X. I figured that perhaps the downloadable version is good for both Mac and PC, so I downloaded the sans Quicktime version but I can't get it to install. Just nothing happens after I download it and try to launch the app. Therefore, I thought perhaps it is a version just for PCs. Is this a correct assumption, or is there another problem on my Mac that is causing this? If so, ideas? Please keep berating replies to a minimum, as I've already acknowledged that this is a dumba*s question

    Hi
    To install Safari 3.0.4:
Download the 10.4.11 Combo Update: PPC machines - here; Intel machines here.
Also, you'll need Pacifist to open the Combo Update. Inside, you'll find a replacement copy for your existing Safari 3.
    Steps to take:
First, move to the trash Safari 3.0.4 from your HD>Applications folder.
    Next, open Pacifist
Once open, select "Open Package" and Navigate to the Combo Update, selecting it.
Then in the top part of the open panel, select "extract to" navigating to your HD>Applications folder.
Once installed, go to your Utilities folder, opening Disk Utility. Highlight your HD on the left and "Repair permissions".
Aside from the above, if you click on the "my settings" on the right side of the forum's browser window, you can personalize your post tag indicating the type of Computer you are using and OS X version. This is helpful for anyone reading your post.

  • Dumb double quote question in my SQL.

This maybe a dumb question, but I want the rownum to appear in my query output and not the word 'rownum' - what am I missing. Maybe one too many quotes or missing one somewhere.
    select '**''9'',''f21'',''|| rownum - 1 ||''**' from dual;
    I want this ==> **'9','f21','1'**
    NOT this ==> **'9','f21','|| rownum - 1 ||'**
    Cheers
    John.

    SQL> select '**'||'9'||','||chr(39)||'f21'||chr(39)||','||chr(39)||to_char(rownum-1)||chr(39)||''||'**'  from dual
      2  /
    '**'||'9'||','||CHR(39)||'F21'||CHR(39)||','||CHR(39)|
    **9,'f21','0'**But you will always get 0 rownum-1.

  • Dumb newbie hardware question! :)

    Hi folks,
I'm new to the world of the blackberry and am just about to take the plunge with an unlocked sim-free BB Bold to use in the UK on Vodafone. I have read about the software differences between BIS and BES and would be going for a BIS set-up. My dumb newbie question is does the hardware come in BES and BIS versions or not?
Many thanks in advance and feel free to mock my foolishness
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

hello, about BIS and BES it's explained on the website but it's clear that if someone sums it up for you it will be easier...
so BES is a type of contract between a company and Blackberry. The company IT buy computers, put Blackberry servers, and buy a fleet of Blackberry Devices for the people in the company to use them and get email through the Blackberry servers.
BIS is a type of contract between a common person and a carrier. The consumer goes to the carrier, and buys a Blackberry device, and a BIS plan that will enable him/her to :
    phone/sms/mms
receive emails that have been configured on the BIS site
do data things if you subscribe to (like browse the web)
You can buy a Blackberry from a carrier that has a deal with RIM (the company that sells Blackberries). Or you can buy a blackberry alone, and then go and contact a carrier that has a deal with RIM.
    phone/sms/mms
receive emails that have been configured on the BIS site
do data things if you subscribe to (like browse the web)

  • Can you Up-Convert SD footage to HD in Compressor? Question in 2 parts

Hi guys, this may sound silly but I have to ask if this is possible.
My question is in 2 parts!
    1. I have SD Footage, shot with XL2 at 60i and I am trying to achieve best picture quality to burn in DVDSP.
Can I up-convert it to HD in Compressor 3? If so, which preset would I use?
    2. If it is possible to up-convert SD footage to HD,
Can you still burn the up-converted HD video on a regular SD DVD in DVDSP if it fits on a single or dual layer disc?
    Thank you,
    Z

For starters, you can't make SD turn into HD. It's just not possible. Something was shot at a resolution of 720x480 which means it will never become 1280x720 or 1920x1280. That being said, there are hardware solutions called line doublers which can upscale for you, but those are expensive and not really what you even asked about so nevermind. Upscaling DVD players add pixels by interpolating info in between real pixels and adding what it think might go there. After this, filters are added to blend and soften and then some sharpening is added. I have seen DVD players that do a really nice job of this and others that don't.
Anyway, you can blow up your footage in compressor but not upscale as far as I know. The best quality footage however is going to be 720x480 since that is your source. This is especially true if you are playing back on an SD TV which only has a resolution of 720x480.
Did that help? I think I rambled a little.

  • Compressor 3 questions - specifically streaming for web

I am new to the world of video compression and every thing else that comes along with it. Recently i have been getting some experiance w/ FCP and now need to get some experience with compression. I have access to a computer w/ Compressor 3 but i dont know enough to use it and get the results iam looking for.
The main problem iam facing now is how to get a fair quality (not necessarily crystal clear) video compressed for the web that can stream and hopefully average out at about 1.5 mb per minute at 400 x 300 dimesnions. I was shown some settings before that did this but it seems that i have either accidently changed them or they just dont work like they used too. I know it ssems wierd to suggest that they would suddenly stop working like they used to but it actually seems like this must be the case and oddly my friend started experianceing the same thing w/ the same settings.
These are the settings i used to use when exporting through Final cut using Quick Time conversion:
    Format: Quick Time Movie
    Compression type: H.264
    Frame Rate: 24
    Key frames: 100
    Data rate: 180
    size: 400 x 300
This used to make ok quality video with the size at approx. 1.5 mb per min. but it doesnt seem to do that anymore(????). Anyway if any one has any experiance or advice that can help please let me know.
These are some other questions I have:
    • In Compressor there are preset Apple settings and within those there is a folder for web and then for streaming. Do only these settings stream or are they just optimized for streaming? What constitutes a streamable file and can any of the other Apple presets also stream (if so which ones) ?
    • Are there adavantages to using Adobe Media Encoder over Compressor, or are there other good programs that can be recommended ?
    • Where can i read in a simplified or summarized way what all the comppressions terms mean, what the settings do, and which formats are ideal for what purposes etc.?
    Thanking everyone in advance

  • Compressor Batch Question

Hey, quick question about using the batch function in compressor. im using it to compress a 4 minute video piece using H.264 which im going to put up on the web. whats the diference between the different batches such as H.264 100mps. 300mps & 800mps??

Those numbers - 100, 300, 800, reflect the kilobytes per second of your compressed video & audio stream.
The more bytes per second, the better your file's quality can be - and I say can because it's not an exact science - but your file size will also be that much larger.
Once you've selected a preset, the Inspector window of Compressor 2 will show you an estimated file size in the Summary tab, if that helps.

  • Compressor geometry settings disabled

You have any idea why compressor won't let me take a 720x486 sequence and then make a 720x480 mpeg2 movie out of it? It always makes it 640x480, even though the settings are set to 720x480.
Seems like all my geometry settings are locked when doing mpeg-2. Anybody have the same problem?

It gives you the dimensions as 640x480 where, in Compressor itself?
On the other hand, if you're opening the MPEG-2 output movie in QT Player, that is normal behavior (640x480, provided this is a 4:3 aspect ratio movie) as the QT MPEG-2 component displays movies using square pixels.

  • Less dumb follow-up question about super/sub classes in WDJ?

This is a follow-up question to the question which Maksim answered in this thread:
Dumb question about super/sub classes in WDJ
    Question:
Is there any kind of weird C++-like statement that you can put at the top of a WDJ module to force the module to interpret any reference to superclass A as a reference to some specific subclass B of A ???

    David,
    1. Java has no preprocessor, so C++ tricks are not available. Also I would not recommend such tricks even in C++ if you don't want to turn your colleagues working with same code into personal enemies.
    2. The phrase "easier to create a WDJ custom class loader " makes me smile. First, it's not that simple to interfere WDJ class loading scheme. Plus custom class loaders is not trivial Java topic per se.
    3. The problem "replace all A-s with B-s" is typically solved using one or another GoF creation patterns, like <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Abstract_factory_pattern">Abstract Factory</a> or <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Factory_method_pattern">Factory Method</a>. You may use them with custom class loader, if you really want to
By the way, all UI controls in WD are created using Abstract Factory (role played by view). So you may use this as good example.

  • FCP - Compressor - DVDSP Question

    Hi everyone,
I'm trying to figure out what settings to use to get better results when creating a DVD coming from FCP.
    Here's the information :
In FCP, I edited a small test video made with a 3D software. Saved uncompressed in 720 x 480 NTSC, 30 fps, anamorphic for 16:9. Looks great in FCP.
Using Compressor, I use DVD Best Quality 90 min, 16:9.
I import the resulting file in DVDSP and the quality is horrible. I know that the movie is compressed in MPEG2 and it looses quality but I'm sure I can get better results (well, I hope).
Any idea, tips, tricks to enhance the final result would be greatly appreciated.
    Regards,
    Phanault

    Hey Phanault,
did you use compressor presets or did you create settings from scratch?
also, you said your video codec was "uncompressed". did you mean FCP uncompressed 4:2:2 8-bit or like an uncompressed Blackmagic, Kona file (yes, they are different).
i don't think it has to do with your PAR, but more with settings.
what you can try is to use the 4:3 preset in compressor and manually set the 16x9 flag in DVDSP, like that, you dont have to recreate your video in 4x3 (just a suggestion and technically, both methods work!).

  • Compressor  presets question

I'm using Compressor 3 to compress a 1.5 minute video in Apple ProRes 422 to something pretty portable- something that I can demo on my late 2005 PowerBook G4. Exporting my video right from Final Cut Pro 6 gives me a file roughly 2.3 GB. What's the best compression setting to use? I'm using a Power Mac G5 Dual Core 2.3GHz model (Late 2005) with the NVIDIA Quadro FX 4500 and 6.5 GB of RAM.

Would that be the preset in the 'Quicktime' folder, or one of the presets in the 'Apple Devices' folder? I'm not actually looking to play it on a specific device- just thru Quicktime on my PowerBook.

  • Dumb film roll question, I'm sure

There has to be an obvious answer right in front of me, but I can't see it.
HOW do I find and select (therefore rename, work with, etc.) previous film rolls? One post seemed to say that the film roll title is in the INFO pane, but I only find the photo title.
I was using iPhoto 5, recently switched to 6. There should be two film rolls imported since, and several years' worth before that.
This must be so obvious that I've been avoiding asking the question...:-b
    Thanks!
    iBook G4 768MB 1.33GHz 60GB   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

Go to the "View" menu and select "Film Rolls", then click on the "i" button on the bottom left of the iPhoto window. You then select the Roll you would like to rename. On the left side below the Album names (where the photo title was) you will see the Roll title. Click on the name and type in the new Roll name.

  • How to achieve good non-interlaced video using compressor (newbie question)

    Dear all,
I am completely at sea but I know that I have to use the "none" setting for the field order and cannot for the life of me work this out.
Now- I usually export direct from Final Cut Pro (H.264, best quality etc etc) but this time the exported QT file just will not de-interlace (not my footage but I have to deliver the edit), come **** or high water.
So- a kind soul said to use Compressor... And to not use any field ordering.
But HOW? I watched videos, sought to use the instructions given me here but am still totally lost.
    What I did:
    1. Launched Compressor,
    2. Dragged in the self-contained reference QT file from my desktop,
    3. Picked a setting (H.264 which has field reordering ON by default),
    4. Dropped the "setting" into the blue field to right of clip thumb,
    5. Double-clicked the "setting" and then-
    6. picked the "Encoder" button, as instructed but cannot change the Field Order.
Because Compressor is completely new to me I don't know if I ought to NOT pick a setting until I have it how I want it, saved it as a "custom setting" and THEN bring it into the project or if I am to do it once brought in to the project. Either way- how to change the field order to "none". Or should I pick a de-interlace filter? Just that I have been looking and testing and nothing I do creates a de-interlaced final file.
All the tutorial videos I have watched (erm- about 5 now) go over exporting and how to pick your settings from those which exist but what I need to know is how to change a setting to suit (ie get rid of the evil interlacing).
I am hoping someone here can give me a very simple step by step or point me in the direction of one.

Let me see if I can wrap my head around what you're trying to do. You started with an HD timeline 1280 x 720 (16:9). Into this you want to add your SD PAL clips, shrunk down for a picture in picture effect (a completely different concept from multicam.) But your shrunk down clips have nasty interlacing, and the one clip which was meant to be full frame looks like rubbish, right? Sorry but there's no way to blow a clip up 180% and have it look even halfway decent. At least not in FCP. Compressor has an upscale algorithm, available in the same Frame Controls tab where you did the de-interlacing, which can give you somewhat better results. There's also a plug-in from Red Giant called Instant HD which may or may not yield better results than Compressor.
Here's where you went wrong. The clips to be shrunk should have been deinterlaced before bringing them into FCP, and into your sequence. Go ahead and do this, using the ProRes 422 setting, with the deinterlacing technique from before.
Your sequence in FCP is fine, except that you want to change its compressor to ProRes 422 so that it matches your newly imported de-interlaced clips.
You want to de-interlace your P2 1080i clips beforehand as well. The other change to make to your sequence is to change Field Dominance to None.
If you've already finished your edit, you can still do all of the de-interlacing, outputting all of the results to a new folder. But you have to do every source clip in its entirety if you want to re-link to retain your edit.
When Compressor's done - this will probably take all night - open your FCP project, select all the source clips, right-click and choose Reconnect Media. Locate the newly de-interlaced ProRes clips and Connect.
Then you only need to export your sequence as a Quicktime Movie, Current Settings, Self-contained. This will give you a pristine master which will play fine on your computer, and from which you may then use Compressor to create a web or dvd version as needed.

  • Compressor Compression Question

I have a huge QuickTime file that I output out of FCP 7, that is a 40 minute long presentation that mixes live video with Power Point slides. The video was shot using a Sony HXR-NX5U and the timeline used the ProRes422 codec. The final size of the movie out of FCP is 66.91 gigs, which I want to compress down to 2 gigs or less to post on YouTube.
What settings might I use in Compressor to achieve this? I'm looking to compress it as a QuickTime H.264 file.
    Thank you!

I'm running Final Cut Studio 3, with FCP 7. I know of the YouTube preset in Compressor, but will it automatically compress down to the size I need, or do I need to limit the data rate, or adjust any other settings?
