Dumb question alert: How do I tell 32 bit  from 64?

Is 32 or 64 bit a function of software or hardware? How can I tell the difference when looking at new computer specs? Do I need it for CS3?
I guess I am using 32 bit XP since my PC is over 4 years old. I now have Prod Prem CS3. What is my best PC/OS combination purchase prospect for MiniDV video editing and a little sound work? I do plan to upgrade to HD within a year or two, but my system is not cutting it.
Also, my computer has not been the same since upgrading from CS2 to CS3. Lots of crashes and everything is super slow.

CS3 is a 100% native 32bit application. For the time being I would not concern yourself about anything 64bit, but rather concentrate on keeping system speed fast and powerful in the 32bit realm where CS3 confortably resides. As always, 2 to 4GB of RAM, a good dualcore processor (or quadcore as budget allows) and a fast and spacious HDD (10k RPM if budget allows) and you will have the beginnings of a good system for video editing.
I would stick with XP Pro (32 bit), rather than Vista, in my opinion, as it is less memory intensive and more stable.

Truly dumb question. How do I get PS to actually complete a command, eg straighten an horizon, and finalise the change. Even doing a "save as" with a new file name and reloading brings the image back, straightened, but with the skewed back ground frame still there. Is there a "apply change" or similiar command that I simply cannot see.

brings the image back, straightened, but with the skewed back ground frame
PSE did what you told it to do. Choose the Straighten and crop edges or fill edges options when you use the straighten tool if you want it to do more than just straighten the contents of the image. Many people prefer the plain straighten because they'd rather crop themselves than let PSE do it.

A Basic Guide for Migrating to Intel-Macs
The Knowledgebase article Intel-based Mac: Some migrated applications may need to be updated refers to methods of dealing with migrating from PowerPC chips to Intel with the Migration Assistant safely. The authors of this tip have not had a chance to verify this works in all instances, or that it avoids the 10.6.1 and earlier Guest Account bug that caused account information to get deleted upon use of the Migration/Setup Assistant. However, a well backed up source that includes at least two backups of all the data that are not connected to your machine will help you avoid potential issues, should they arise. In event it does not work, follow the steps below.
If you are migrating a PowerPC system (G3, G4, or G5) to an Intel-Mac be careful what you migrate.  Keep in mind that some items that may get transferred will not work on Intel machines and may end up causing your computer's operating system to malfunction.
Rosetta supports "software that runs on the PowerPC G3, G4, or G5 processor that are built for Mac OS X". This excludes the items that are not universal binaries or simply will not work in Rosetta:
Classic Environment, and subsequently any Mac OS 9 or earlier applications
Screensavers written for the PowerPC System Preference add-ons
All Unsanity Haxies Browser and other plug-ins
    Contextual Menu Items
Applications which specifically require the PowerPC G5 Kernel extensions
Java applications with JNI (PowerPC) libraries
See also What Can Be Translated by Rosetta.
In addition to the above you could also have problems with migrated cache files and/or cache files containing code that is incompatible.
If you migrate a user folder that contains any of these items, you may find that your Intel-Mac is malfunctioning. It would be wise to take care when migrating your systems from a PowerPC platform to an Intel-Mac platform to assure that you do not migrate these incompatible items.
If you have problems with applications not working, then completely uninstall said application and reinstall it from scratch. Take great care with Java applications and Java-based Peer-to-Peer applications. Many Java apps will not work on Intel-Macs as they are currently compiled. As of this time Limewire, Cabos, and Acquisition are available as universal binaries. Do not install browser plug-ins such as Flash or Shockwave from downloaded installers unless they are universal binaries. The version of OS X installed on your Intel-Mac comes with special compatible versions of Flash and Shockwave plug-ins for use with your browser.
The same problem will exist for any hardware drivers such as mouse software unless the drivers have been compiled as universal binaries. For third-party mice the current choices are USB Overdrive or SteerMouse. Contact the developer or manufacturer of your third-party mouse software to find out when a universal binary version will be available.
Also be careful with some backup utilities and third-party disk repair utilities. Disk Warrior, TechTool Pro , SuperDuper , and Drive Genius  work properly on Intel-Macs with Leopard.  The same caution may apply to the many "maintenance" utilities that have not yet been converted to universal binaries.  Leopard Cache Cleaner, Onyx, TinkerTool System, and Cocktail are now compatible with Leopard.
Before migrating or installing software on your Intel-Mac check MacFixit's Rosetta Compatibility Index.

Transferring data with Setup Assistant - Migration Assistant FAQ
Because Migration Assistant isn't the ideal way to migrate from PowerPC to Intel Macs, using Target Disk Mode, copying the critical contents to CD and DVD, an external hard drive, or networking will work better when moving from PowerPC to Intel Macs.  The initial section below discusses Target Disk Mode.  It is then followed by a section which discusses networking with Macs that lack Firewire.
If both computers support the use of Firewire then you can use the following instructions:
    1. Repair the hard drive and permissions using Disk Utility.
    2. Backup your data.  This is vitally important in case you make a mistake or there's some other problem.
    3. Connect a Firewire cable between your old Mac and your new Intel Mac.
    4. Startup your old Mac in Transferring files between two computers using FireWire.
    5. Startup your new Mac for the first time, go through the setup and registration screens, but do NOT migrate data over. Get to your desktop on the new Mac without migrating any new data over.
If you are not able to use a Firewire connection (for example you have a Late 2008 MacBook that only supports USB:)
    1. Set up a local home network: Creating a small Ethernet Network.
    2. If you have a MacBook Air or Late 2008 MacBook see the following:

    MacBook Air- Migration Tips and Tricks;
MacBook Air- Remote Disc, Migration, or Remote Install Mac OS X and wireless 802.11n networks.
Copy the following items from your old Mac to the new Mac:
In your /Home/ folder: Documents, Movies, Music, Pictures, and Sites folders.
    In your /Home/Library/ folder:
/Home/Library/Application Support/AddressBook (copy the whole folder) /Home/Library/Application Support/iCal (copy the whole folder)
Also in /Home/Library/Application Support (copy whatever else you need including folders for any third-party applications)
/Home/Library/Keychains (copy the whole folder) /Home/Library/Mail (copy the whole folder) /Home/Library/Preferences/ (copy the whole folder) /Home /Library/Calendars (copy the whole folder) /Home /Library/iTunes (copy the whole folder) /Home /Library/Safari (copy the whole folder)
    If you want cookies:
    /Home/Library/Cookies/Cookies.plist /Home/Library/Application Support/WebFoundation/HTTPCookies.plist
    For Entourage users:
Entourage is in /Home/Documents/Microsoft User Data Also in /Home/Library/Preferences/Microsoft.
Credit goes to Macjack for this information.
If you need to transfer data for other applications please ask the vendor or ask in the  Discussions where specific applications store their data.
    5. Once you have transferred what you need restart the new Mac and test to make sure the contents are there for each of the applications.

unfortunately, like the previous 6 versions of GB, MIDI export is not supported. you would need to open the file in Logic in order to do that

  • Probably a really dumb question, but how...

Hello everyone. I am new to Mac and Logic. I am doing a one-on-one tutorial with an Apple "genius" once a week to try and get up to speed on Logic, but I need to get something sorted out right now. I am producing a podcast for shortwave transmission and the file needs to be in mono. My question is, how do you set the export to mono? I see no options on the bounce menu to export in mono.
    Thanks in advance

I'm not sitting in front of logic but I think the master fader has a button to change it from stereo to mono. When it is in stereo mode it has 2 interlocked circles. When in mono, it has 1 circle.

  • How Do I Tell A Version From A Master

Masters can only be stored in one Project.
    Correct?
If I drag a photo from a Project into an Album I'm assuming what's in the Album is a Version.
    Correct?
How can I tell I'm looking at a Version and not a Master?

Apple has done a crappy job of naming things, and users cut their feet walking the path to mastery.
    A semi-easy answer:
    - Yes, Images have a special relationship to Projects:  each Image can be in only one Project, and must be in a Project.  Images can be in as many Albums as you want.
Have you read my concise guide?  I think it will provide sturdy enough shoes to get you through this rough spot.
    The not-easy answer is this:
    - Every Image you look at is a Version, unless you activate "View→Show Master Image" (usually done by typing "m").  Images that have no adjustments appear exactly the same as the Master.  The Image = the Master (an image-format file) * the Version (a text file of instructions).  The instructions are applied on-the-fly to the Master in order to produce the Image.  Understanding this is one of the keys to making use of Aperture.  In use (and in the Aperture documentation) "Version" is used interchangeably as the name of this text file, and as the name of the Image produced.  (Imho, this is a terrible, horrible, execrable interface decision.)
"Photo" has no useful meaning in Aperture.  The rectangles you see in the Browser and the Viewer are Images.

  • How can I tell if signals from two devices are truly synchronised?

    Hi there,
How does one check that signals from two devices (two separate devices in a single X-series chassis) that should be synchronised actually are?   I am using a PXIe6361 and PXIe4331 on a PXIe-1073, with Labview 2001 SP1 64-bit. All devices are using the Sample Clock from the 4331 device, and an AI Start Trigger, so they should be synchronised.
I thought that writing the signal data to file and checking the time stamp for each column of data would be the most accurate, but I have been told that timestamps are software created and therefore don't reflect the actual time that the signals were acquired by the hardware.  When I do this, the timestamps vary by up to 150ms which is larger than I expected.
If I set the x-axis of the waveform graphs (on the GUI) to "Time" then it appears that the first data sample is taken at different times for the two plots (one plot per device).
If I set the x-axis of the waveform graphs (on the GUI) to "Ignore time stamp" (so that the x-axis just starts from 0 rather than a date-time) then the first data point occurs at "0" for both graphs. However, I'm not sure that this reflects the actual alignment of the signal.
What is the best way to check if signals collected on different devices in the same chassis are actually synchronised?
    Thanks,
    Claire.

    Hi Lynn,
Thanks for your help and for sending the demo.
I understand the concept of how the signals will look if they're not synchronised and your demo shows that nicely. I guess I have been perplexed by someone else telling me that the timestamps in the output file (and following from that I assume timestamps on a waveform graph) do not give an indication of whether signals are synchronised. The reason they gave for this was that the timestamps are manufactured by the software, not the DAQ hardware.  They suggested that I put the setting "ignore waveform timestamps" on my waveform graphs, and then check that both signals come in at the same time (i.e. both start at zero), but I'm not convinced about this.
When I use an analog trigger, neither the timestamps in my output file or on the two waveform graphs are synchronised. If I don't use the trigger, then there is far less disparity in the timestamps in the output file. I've attached two output files here, and my VI.
This is my first attempt to synchronise a voltage module and a strain gauge module on an X-series chassis, so I want to make sure that I'm achieving the best synchronisation that I can, and the difference in behaviour with and without the trigger worries me.
    Thanks,
    Claire.

  • Questions on how to utilize still/ Video files from 3Gs using iLife 09?

    Hi,
Just got back from a trip where I took a bunch of stills and videos using the my 3Gs. I just downloaded them onto my Mac using iPhoto.
    1. How do get the video files from iPhoto into iMovie as it seems that iPhoto imported it all.
    2. How do I get the images that were taken with Location services turned "ON" to display the location they were taken?
    3. Will location mapping also work with iPhone video files?

Maybe someone in the iMovie discussion forum would know some of the specifics from iPhoto to iMovie. I thought I remember seeing a way to import straight from my iMove.
