Dumb question re function keys

This has been going on forever and I've never figured it out.
I've unchecked the box for "use function keys as standard function keys" but I can't seem to designate them to use them in apps. When I try to designate them, they just don't work.

Are you asking about the use of a function key enabled by an application? If so and you are having a problem with that application then you need to contact the developer's tech support for assistance.
If this is a matter of using a keyboard that has a set of built-in functions for use with OS X as well as having numbered function keys, then you may need to press an additional key to switch to the numbered function keys. For example, my MBP keyboard requires pressing an Fn key then the desired function key. Check the information for your keyboard to determine how you switch from the OS X functions to the numbered functions used by your application.
Sorry for any confusion, but I did not understand the context until you said, "I need to download another app to MAKE f1 do such-and-such?"

  • Question Regarding Function Keys on Japanese Wireless Keyboard

    When looking at pictures of Apple's Japanese Wireless Keyboard on the offical store* I noticed something interesting: The 4th function key still has dashboard icon on it.  I know that at least on the English keyboard they replaced this with a key for Lion's Launchpad feature. So I'm wondering is this product image still accurate or not?

    Which exactly keyboard you are using, can you provide PN pls?
    For latest Ultraslim Plus keyboard you have to install SW and driver and that will put into Systray icon where you can switch it. Like on attached image.

  • Might be a dumb question, but I am moving from 1st gen to iPadair; on Safari, 1st gen to delete apps/sites just visited, you could double tap home key and apps would appear on bottom and one could delete from there. How does it work on ipadair?

    This may be a dumb question, but nonetheless, here goes:
    I just moved from 1st gen ipad to new ipad-air. Great and happy! But, one thing I can't figure out how to do is to delete the pages/sites/apps that I have just used? For example, on the 1st gen. you could double-tap home button and past actions would come up on bottom of screen. I could then delete them one by one, to keep things cleaned up. Am I missing something here? Does it keep a log irregardless? Not the same as deleting history - at least didnt' work for me.

    Close apps and not delete apps.
    1. Double tap the home button to bring up the multi-tasking view
    2. Swipe the app's windows upwards to close
    3. The app will fly off the screen

  • How do you reset the special keyboard function keys?

    I used to use an older external keyboard that had Dashboard as F4. Now I got a newer keyboard that has Launchpad as F4. I was used to the old way, so I went into the keyboard shortcut for Dashboard and set it as F4. To my disappointment, however, it only works when I hold 'fn'. (I didn't expect this, as when the key was set to F13 holding fn wasn't required.) So anyway, that is even worse, and I wanted to change it back. However, it wouldn't let me. (In Launchpad & Dock > Keyboard Shortcuts, there used to be a checkmark next to Show Launchpad with a blank area on the right, but now when I try to click Restore Defaults, it forces me to choose a key... and pressing F4 without holding fn doesn't register.) And I know I can make it use all function keys as standard function keys, but not just for F4. And if I do it for all of them, I lose the other keyboard controls and I don't want that. I don't want to have to be stuck with the FunctionFlip 3rd party tool forever... How can I actually reset they key (or ideally, make it bring up dashboard without holding down fn)? You'd think that if it's so simple to change a setting one way it would be simple to change back. I'd even delete some prefs file if i had to.

    I figured out that if you remove the ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.symbolichotkeys.plist file and restart, that restores the keyboard.
    Second question: Is there any way to make F4 (without holding fn) bring up Dashboard on Lion that doesn't require FunctionFlip? If it matters, I have a Time Machine backup of the symbolichotkeys.plist file from when I had the older keyboard.

  • Function keys in Forms 9i

    Function keys in Forms 9i
    are not working with me..any possible reasons?

    Thanx for your help.
    it was my mistake I thought F9 is a built-in function key for LOV like it was in 6i
    but I have another question please in this area
    suppose I want to add F9 function key to call LOVs
    I understod that i shoud add this line to fmrweb.res
    120 : 0 : "F9" : ??? : "List of values"
    what should I put instead of the question marks?
    what is Forms function number? how can i find it? and how can i modify it?
    thanx again.

  • Overriding function keys when using MS Remote Desktop Connection

    Is there a way when connected to a RDP client using MS Remote Desktop Connection to prevent the function keys from being intercepted and handled by OSX. For example on my iMac keyboard, function keys 7 to 12 are used to control itunes and alter the system sound volumes. Is there a way to have these keys processed by the RDP client instead, so that the remote Windows OS can handle them?
    While this question currently relates to an iMac, I'll soon be using a Macbook Pro in the same scenario, and will be requiring a similar solution for that machine.

    Thanks for your suggestion. Setting that option only toggles what the function keys are interpreted as in OSX, but the key presses are still not processed by the OS in the RDP session. For example, pressing F9 when the RDP window is active shows all open OSX windows in Expose, rather than having the keypress processed by the active software in the RDP session
    I did try posting to the forum you mentioned yesterday, but due to server issues my post failed. I'll try again today.

  • F8 Function Key Not Working In DreamWeaver

    No response in the Adobe DreamWeaver forum, so here goes...
    The F8 function key used to bring up the Files window in DreamWeaver on previous Mac machines, but I'm trying to figure out why it won't on a new installation of Adobe CS3 on a brand new Mac G5, running Leopard 10.5.4. All updates have been downloaded and installed for either the OS or CS3.
    On this particular keyboard the F8 key is also PLAY/PAUSE button, if that means anything.
    What have I missed? I use this hot key all the time, and now it won't work on this new machine.
    Thanks.

    However...same question but not resolved...I am using a logitech keyboard plugged into my laptop - and it doesn't HAVE an fn key.
    I didn't have a problem until I installed Leopard, and now f8 = spaces.
    Any ideas? I use Dreamweaver a lot and quick access to the files window is essential
    thanks!

  • How can the symbol and non-English diacritical marking, etc accessed with combinations of letters and functional keys prior to Snow Leopard be achieved in Snow Leopard?

    How can the symbol and non-English diacritical marking/punctuation pallet, available in pre-Snow Leopard OSes with various combinations of letter or number keys and functional keys, be accessed in Snow Leopard?  Those pre-Snow Leopard versions worked on the fly as one was making text in any pedestrian application and its native font (Mail, Text Edit, for example).  One didn't need to dig around in font libraries, change font preferences, etc.

    > One didn't need to dig around in font libraries, change font
    > preferences, etc.
    It hasn't worked like that since the Early Chalcolithic (ie, System 7 or thereabouts).
    You've already got plenty of answers. Briefly (and grossly oversimplified),
    - Mac OS X conforms to a standard known as Unicode; in its current incarnation, it defines over 100k characters.
    - A keypress is translated into a character according to the current keyboard layout.
    - The graphic representation of a character (ie, glyph), is provided by the current font.
    - If a font lacks a glyph for the requested character, either another font will be automatically chosen (Mac OS X text engine), or some form of feedback (empty box, question mark, etc) will be used.
    - To inspect the actual key codes, use a utility such as Key Codes.
    - To inspect the current keyboard layout, invoke Keyboard Viewer.
    - To inspect the full complement of glyphs of a font, invoke Character Viewer (also accessed with the Special Characters command).
    (Remember that both these utilities are resizable and zoomable -- you can enlarge them to a comfortable viewing size, then zoom out to see more of the screen for your original task.)
    - For a more detailed look, use a utility such as UnicodeChecker.
    - The default keyboard layout depends on your Mac OS X localisation.
    (Keep in mind that there's no need to stick with the default layout; choose whichever one makes sense to you, given your language, habits, and proclivities. Mac OS X comes bundled with quite a few, including some obviously designed for the huddled masses of refugees from the Dark Side, who, in their wretched ignorance, have the unmitigated gall of labelling our native ways "really uncomfortable". Oh well, this, too, shall pass.
    If none of the supplied keyboard layouts fits your needs -- if, for instance, you write your emails in Etruscan -- go out on the 'net, you'll find quite a few. Or write your own with Ukulele, it's not really all that difficult.)
    - Use Keyboard Viewer to familiarise yourself with the current layout and to enter the odd character; but, to be proficient, you should learn your layout to the point that KV is no longer needed.
    - Use Character Viewer to enter the odd character not available in the current keyboard layout.
    Neither Keyboard Viewer nor Character Viewer are effective tools for more extensive needs, eg, for writing and editing bilingual or multilingual texts. In such a case, you should enable the respective keyboard layouts and switch between them with a keyboard shortcut.
    A few interesting layouts bundled with Mac OS X have already been mentioned. Let me add three.
    - Dvorak: several layouts based on the Dvorak keyboard. It is claimed that the latter is more productive and lessens RSI risk.
    - US Extended: based on QWERTY, it offers a more extensive set of diacritics (eg, caron, breve) via dead keys.
    - Unicode Hex Input: also based QWERTY, it allows input by Unicode codepoint (in hexadecimal), so it's the most extensive layout of all; eg, to enter the character "Parenthesized Number Twelve" (U+247F), hold down Option, type "247f", release Option.

  • My Imac function keys seem to be inop. How do I activate?

    My IMac w/ OS 10.5.8 has inop function keys. I've just added a wireless keyboard and mouse?

    Eustace Mendis wrote:
    The new Apple extended keyboard has those functions already programmed in. This is from the advertising pitch:
    It also has function keys for one-touch access to a variety of Mac features such as screen brightness, volume, eject, play/pause, fast-forward and rewind, Mission Control, and Launchpad.
    The short answer to your question is that keys are wired differently on different keyboards.
    No, it depends on the setting chosen in Keyboard Preferences. (see my earlier post)

  • E545 and Function key not working

    Any help here is apprecited. My function (Fn) key is refusing to work at all. None of the special features are able to be used. I've checked all my drivers, and followed the instructions in the User Guide, but some of the options described in the guide are even showing on my computer.
    I'd love for some help on this issue, as the computer is pretty worthless right now.

  • How can I assign a function key on my IMAC's wired keyboard to enter my email address in documents or on internet forms?

    I'm trying to set up my wired IMAC keyboard to create shortcuts to enter my email adresses into emails or into web forms.  I was able to do this when I was working with PCs but can't find direction on the process for the MAC.  There seems to be 7 unused Function Keys at the top of the keyboard that are srrving no apparent purpose so logic tells me they must be available for sutomization.
    Please help. My fingers are tired...

    I don't think you can with the standard Mac OS X tools / sys prefs..
    You have to step into the realm of 3rd party key mapper tools.
      I'm reluctant to go there..
    I'm happy being able to remap option to be my command key
      using the standard System Preferences ->Keyboard..
    but.. googling a bit shows some 3rd party tools..

  • Ideapad U430p, Swap function keys and my cat

    So I bought the U430p and after installing the complete system new, I am quite happy with it. Obviously my cat also. I disabled in the Bios the Hotkey that I don't have to press all the time Fn+one of the function keys to access these. However, I read this forum and several others asked also this question, however my cat must have found a hidden key combination to swap the Fn keys back after stepping or sleeping on my notebook. It happened already 2 times, that I pressed F2 (to rename a file) and the loudness was going down. F5 and the window closes. So I went back to the BIOS and to my surprise the Hotkey was still disabled(!). So I enabled it and disabled it again, Exit and save settings and all was back to normal. Pressing the Decrease Volume was F2 again, so I could rename w/o pressing the Fn key. Until 2 days ago, same situation, cat stepped at night on the notebook and I had to suffer again that selecting F2 was only possible with the Fn Key. Bios same, Hotkey was still disabled. My question is now: what is the secret hotkey in Windows (or login screen) to swap the Fn keys. If my cat can do it, I wanna do it also Cheers Tom

    I have the same problem, and I really can't understand why do they do such things! I even can't get a normal answer from Lenovo about it. I like Thinkpads, they are great designed & they have a lot of unique features, most of them could be customized, exept this! Why??? I can't belive that it's so hard to remap 2 buttons using BIOS! The problem is that the FN key doesn't generate a scan code, which could be recognized by the software, i tried numerous programs to remap the FN button, but it's useless. You can do it only in 2 ways: 1. mechanical - to swap them fisically, but it's hard, dangerous & the warranty will be lost of course. 2. BIOS remapping which can be done only by Lenovo or maybe by somobody, who can hack the BIOS. So, Dear Lenovo Experts PLEASE do this feature for us, we REALLY neeed it! We need it much more than "keyboard customizer", more than "easy eject", more than "media center" becouse we use the left CTRL button every minute, working on your notebook!

  • Mac & Photoshop Function Keys and/or volume

    Question for Mac & Photoshop users.. I want to use the Function keys for PS actions.. however I really love the volume buttons for music. If I turn on Use all Function Keys as F1, F2 etc, I can use the Fn keys for PS, but the volume options go away.. Can I have my cake and eat it too? Thanks!

    Have you checked the System/Keyboard preference pane to see if the Function key option is checked?

  • Fn Function Key Issues

    My FN key is sometimes turned off after booting allowing me to use the F1-12 keys without having to press the FN key, however sometimes it is turned on and pressing F keys does all the stuff represented by the symbols ontop of the F key and to access the traditional uses I must press FN. In more sober words they sometimes randomly switch after booting. How can I control and remap these keys and stuff?
    Also arch forums search is terrible

    What kind of computer is this?  Is there a setting in the bios for toggling the function keys?  Is it a mac(book)?  If so, did you read the wiki articles about that?
    Do you want to fix this issue of inconsistency, or do you want to remap keys "and stuff"?  If you want to remap keys, this can depend on what WM/DE you are using.  There are wiki articles on this as well.
    I know that's a lot of questions, but we'll need more information to give you any suitable direction.

  • How to close a popup using a function key in adf + Jquery

    Hello All,
    I want to display some error message using function key so I have used javascript function
    *function showText(event) {*
    var k = event.getKeyCode();
    *if (k == 115) {*
    ------------------------------------------CODE-------------------------------------------
    This is working fine on click of F4 it is invoking a popup and inside that popup in dialog it is showing some error messages. The property modal of dialog is true. So that user should not be able to navigate to main form until error message is closed.
    Now on click of F6 I want that error message to be closed. When I added af:clientListener on popup or dialog type="keyDown" is not available.
    So I thought using jquery for this. I have created a form.js file inside that I have written:
    *$(function first()*
    *               jQuery('*').bind('keydown', 'F6', function (evt){closePopup();evt.stopPropagation();return false;});*
    *function closePopup(){*
    *     alert("Do you want to close the error message");*
    I have also added jquery.hotkeys.js and jquery-latest.js file.
    My question here is How can i find that popup or dialog inside that jquery function and close it?
    On click of F6 I am getting that alert Do you want to close the error message but after that how can I find the popup or dialog and close it?
    I am new to jquery still I tried using some code:
    var dialog = event.getSource();
    var popup = dialog.findComponent("p1");
    popup.close();
    and
    var output1 = AdfUIComponent.findComponent("p1");
    output1.close();
    and
    curElm = document.activeElement;
    var frm = curElm.close();
    But none of them worked.
    Please help
    Thanks

    Hi,
    this whitepaper: http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/developer-tools/jdev/1-2011-javascript-302460.pdf has an example of registering keyboard keys on a global level (see page 36). So you would define a key to close dialogs in general. The paper also explains how to search and find components. Note that you should always work with the ADF Faces client side API and never against the generated markup or DOM (which in fact your code does)
