Dunno where else to post this...

If this isn't the right area to post this, please tell me where I should post it instead.
There seems to be an automatic update program running that searches for updates to Apple products installed on my computer (iTunes and Quicktime).
This program seems to search for updates at random, usually after the computer has been on for several hours.
As I have not updated either iTunes or Quicktime (and I have no desire to, so please don't suggest it), the program does find updates. It then opens a dialog window that forces itself to the forefront of my desktop - 'stealing focus' is the term that I've encountered for this.
The problem here is that the programs I am running when this occurs hang or crash as soon as this dialog opens.
I am hoping that someone will be able to tell me how to disable this program, or at least where I can find the thing.

Hi, Nirodragon.
I am hoping that someone will be able to tell me how to disable this program, or at least where I can find the thing.
You should be able to find Apple Software Update in your XP Start menu > All Programs list.
Run the program, go to the Edit menu > Preferences > Schedule tab and set it to Never check for updates.

  • I don't know where else to post this. iTunes Remote Application

I know they have the application "Remote" so you can control iTunes from your iPod Touch or iPhone, but is there an application that you can control your iPod Touch or iPhone from your iTunes? I see this useful because right now my computer is a laptop, therefore anytime I'm listening to music on it, I'm usually right there, no need for the remote application. But I see it as if my iPod were in a docking station or stereo, it would make sense to have an application that runs on your computer, that you can control your iPod right from your computer, or atleast like a play/pause, skip, volume type thing.

Could you please copy/paste the link where this video that doesn't work is supposed to appear on? Perhaps we can see if this problem is limited to your settings, or is an actual server issue.

  • I didn't know where else to post this.

Forgive me, I'm not completely knowledgeable on my mac, so I don't know what airport I have, but as I've seen around here a lot of people are having problems with airport extreme. I have a Powerbook G4 i bought in 05 that is having a difficult time connecting to my router. it is a netgear WPN824 router. I don't know if that mac has Airport extreme or not, so I was hoping you could tell me so I knew how to approach the problem. I think there's a problem with my router because not only can my mac not connect, but my ps3 and psp also cannot.
We get signal throughout the house, but we cant get online other than on my imac desktop. Is there ANY help i can get? I have looked around the other posts about similar problems, but I didnt get any information that worked for me. please help. I dont want to call Geek Squad and get raped in prices.

Second step. Make sure all of your Macs are running the latest version of the OS - 10.5.5 (You tag line shows 10.5.3)
    Best way to do this:
Open Disk Utility and run Repair Permissions
Download the 10.5.5 updater from http://support.apple.com/downloads/MacOS_X_10_5_5_ComboUpdate
Open and run the 10.5.5 Combo Updater.
Restart the Mac then Open Disk Utility and run Repair Permissions again.
If you have already used Software Update to update your systems to 10.5.5, it is still a good idea to run the Combo updater. Apparently it does a better job with fewer glitches than the SU incremental updater.
If those two steps don't work, post in this forum: http://discussions.apple.com/forum.jspa?forumID=1222
    Hope that helps.

  • Don't know where else to post this, Can you run the old MS DOS on a Mac?

The company I work for is a PC based invironment. I can of course get around most of that but there is one huge stumbling block.
Believe it or not, the company is still using an old MS DOS application to look up orders over the network.
Is there currently anyway to run a DOS program of my PowerBook G4? If not will these new MacBooks be able to?
    Thanks,
    -Tom

Yes using Virtual PC on your G4 PowerBook.
The new MacBooks can not run Virtual PC, however can dual boot with Windows XP SP2 and if the DOS applications can run on XP SP2 then you will be able to run them.

Can Itune get too full whereas it will stop downloading podcast automatically or manually? I just exported my 2006 " bibleonradio" podcast to a folder on my harddrive. Immediately itune started downloading podast from that site. But for the last 4-5 months it would hit and miss with downloading and the last 2 weeks it quit altogether.I would go to the site and download the podcast to a selected itune folder as a mp3 for listening.
Do I need to do some type of maintenance to prevent this from occurring? The site is simple reading of bible scriptures. Could itunes get confuse with 2006 podcasts, thinking I already have the podcast, even though the release date for the new podast are mark 2007?

Look at the Podcasts in your iTunes Library. Do you see a little exclamation point to the left of the listing? If so, click on that.

I have that symbol on some of my other podacst sites, but not this one because I listen to it daily, sometimes 2-3 times a day. Could the exclamation symbol for the othe sites, which goes away if I start listening to them again affect this podcast? but these site with the exclamation also hit and miss when itunes downloads, as much as 2-3 weeks once I start it back up.

What's happened to me is that some Podcasts I subscribe to I might get lazy about listening to. Several of the Podcasts will pile up, and after a while iTunes will stop updating if you haven't listened to them. When I click on that little exclamation point in a circle, it will tell me that iTunes hasn't been updating that podcast because I haven't listened to it in a while. I think it asks if you want to continue (or maybe you have to click on subscribe again to get them started back).
If you are listening to this particular podcast every day, that shouldn't be a problem. And not listening to the other ones shouldn't affect this one. Sorry I can't be of more help, but I'm not sure what is causing it.
You might go to iTunes> Preferences and click on the tab for Podcasts and see what your settings are there.

Trying to come up with an alternative to incomplete podcasts downloads from a website. What I'm trying to do is convert some the missing podcasts file from a website that itune don't download-reason unknown. I'm able to download a mp3 file of the podcast from the web site to my desktop, but I would like to add this to my podcast library under the same name of the podcast that I subscribed, then add to my playlist for continuous playing. Is this possible?
    Thank for any Help,

Some Podcasts have many episodes and when I subscribe, I get them all at once. But with some podcasts ( http://www.bibleonradio.com/ ), only a few episodes download, and I know there are many others available either because I can see them listed by going directly to the site or because they are numbered and some are clearly missing. I have tried setting my preferences both to download the latest edition of a podcast when I update or to download ALL editions. No difference either way.
Strangely enough, if I am patience , sometimes the gaps will fill themselves in or all at once when I choose to click update. Anyone have any ideas why this might be happening? Any help would be greatly appreciated. I email the web administrator and they said they were able to go to the itune store and download all the recent episodes. Below is my email conversation.
    Thanks,

    Austin,
I just went out to the iTunes store and tried to download those dates you had a problem with and I was able to download them without any problem. Maybe you should try again. And yes, you can manually download them from our website and store them into your podcast library. I’ve done that before and it works too.

Deleting the application rarely solves anything on Macs. A better starting point is normally to delete the preference file for the application (in Users/~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.itunes.plist) or see if you have the same problem in another user account on the computer.

  • I don't know where else to ask this: Quick Question about Logic Platinum 6

    Hi everyone,
This question actually pertains to a copy of Logic Platinum 6 I own but I don't know where else to ask it, so here I am in the Logic 8 forum.
I haven't touched Logic in a year or maybe two, and I just installed it on my computer and after attempting to start it up with two different XS keys (I thought I lost one so I have a replacement and I forget which one is the active one) it says "no XS key found" to both of them.
I want to upgrade to Logic 8 but in the mean time I can't even get Logic 6 to recognize my XS key.
Please help me out if you have any information that would be beneficial or know where I could seek help!
    Thank you!
    Colin C.

When you plugin them in, are they recognised in System Profiler? Try differnt ports, connecting them directly and not on a hub. Try on a different computer if necessary.

  • Kinda OT --- but couldn't figure out where else to post

This is the situation --- I use Pro Tools 7 M Powered. I initally installed it on my Mini and when I upgraded to my iMac, I upgraded to the Intel version of PT 7.1. In order to use PT M Powered you have to "unlock" it using the license which is stored on this little USB device called an iLok. I used PT over the weekend. Last night I went to use it and it told me the iLok didn't exist and I needed to run the iLok installer software.
It goes through the installation process but when it launches the iLok website, it tells me no software has been installed.
Of course, there is not an Intel version of this to my knowledge and even after forcing Safari to run in Rosetta mode, I keep getting that error. I can see the key on the website, but I can't verify it in order to unlock Pro Tools because this software won't install.
I have no earthly idea why it stopped working: the USB device isn't defective and I'm about at my wit's end trying to access the license so I can open up Pro Tools. The only thing I can think of is to hook up the Mini and reauthorize the key again on there and then hope and pray the iMac will be able to read it again.
So... I was wondering if anyone else has come across a similar situation with audio software/DAW requiring unlocking and how they handled it? If there is some sort of workaround because I really hate to wait on iLok to release an Intel based version of the software required so that the iMac can access this key again!
And I can't afford to spend lots of loot on and HD based system or Pro Tools LE, as I only remix/edit recreationally now At the time I chose to invest in the M Powered version, I felt it would meet all my requirements. If I had known this iLok thing would be such a hassle I would've sprang more money!

  • Question about Photoshop Elements, not sure where else to post at.

I am looking to be able to add layers and do some fun type editing for photos to use as backgrounds and media shows. I'm new to this. I am planning to add Photoshop Elements and was just curious if it does enough different stuff from iPhoto 11 to make it worth it as well as enough to avoid purchasing the bigger more expensive Photoshop programs. I am also wondering where to get good tutorials on learning to use it, if so. Any help? Thanks.

PhotoShop Elements will do what you want, and is a good complement to iPhoto. For learning it, I suggest Barbara Brundage's excellent Missing Manual for PhotoShop Elements (Macintosh).

  • Best keyboard and mouse for typesetting and design (not sure where else to put this)

So, we got a new Mac Pro. I don't think this keyboard is going to work so well for typesetting. Too little travel on the keys I think. And the wireless mouse.... it's OK but I definitely need something different.
    Pros and Cons
Apple keyboard: Pros - The function keys at the top for controlling audio, ejecting the CD tray, screen brightness etc.
Cons - You have to hold the "fn" key and hit F12 to get to the Widgets. Didn't have to do that with our G5 keyboard. Metal body.... I'm CONSTANTLY shocking myself on this thing from the static of the carpet. Key travel.... they don't go down very far. Not sure if that is desirable or not.
Magic Mouse: Pros - Multitouch surface is nice for moving left and right when zoomed in on something or moving an image around. The other multitouch gestures are pretty cool as well. It's wireless, that's nice. Havent had one of those before.
Cons - It just feels like crap in my hand. It doesn't have the standard "hump" that most mice have to fill up your hand.
So... what do people think? Ideas? Thoughts?

    TwitchOSX wrote:
Well... turning on the "Use all F1, F2, etc. keys as standard function keys" makes the F12 go to the Widgets panel and F11 makes all the windows flow out off the edges so you can see the desktop, but then nothing else works so the F3 key that makes all the windows small and shows the different desktops doesn't work, the brightness keys don't do anything, the audio keys don't do anything...... argh. It's one or the other!
Not true. The setting reverses the function of the Fn key. So to adjust brightness you have to press "Fn + F1/F2", and without Fn it does what F1 ought to do. (Barring what John says; the system takes precedence in stealing functions.)
There is no way to get what you want: both sets of functions at once. Perhaps you could have a custom keyboard made, with two rows of function keys. (In the Good Ol' Days of WordPerfect 5, you could buy a custom keyboard with four rows of function keys, one for each of "Plain", "Alt", "Shift", and "Control" modifiers. Only for the truly lazy, too wary to press-and-hold a modifier key for a quarter of a second.)

  • Anybody know where to get Canon large format paper? (Not sure where else to put this)

We have a canon iPF720, 36" wide printer. We were getting 190gsm 36" x 100' from Amazon but apparently that has been discontinued and replaced with 200gsm. I can't seem to find 200gsm on Amazon so I've been looking around and I can't find any. We need some in a hurry. West coast would be best for faster shipping. Anybody have any ideas on places I can call or check their website?

Haven't gotten back here to say yet... but I got it to work with InDesign.
Downloaded the driver and figured out the goofy driver settings from within the ID print window and printed out a poster. Worked like a charm. Soooooo happy. I don't have to deal with that crappy Canon PosterArtist software and I don't have to save the files as a JPG and convert to some PC to be able to print from that PosterArtist software. STOKED!

  • Powerbook making bad squeaking sound...don't know where else to post.. hlp

    Dear Forum,
This powerbook g4 1.25 2g ram, 15" alumninum, hard drive failed 3 weeks ago, I replaced it. Now, there is a new noise coming from somewhere in there. It only starts when I am downloading something, and the graph screen on safari shows the status bar filling up indicating the progress...and it also makes this sqeaking abbrasive sound when, for example, I am in iMovie3 hd, and i use the feature far far away, which generates "star wars" like scrolling on the screen. Out from the computer comes this bad abbrasive sound. Not good.

  • Don't know where else to post...

This is strange....I have been using a Mophie Juice Air battery case on my iphone 3G. It uses a microUSB cable to connect for power, etc. I have been using a generic microUSB car charger to charge this case and phone for some time now. No problems.
I just got a 3GS. Using my Mophie case on it now, which is no problem. Phone will still charge with the Mophie cable to the computer, but NOT with the car charger - when I plug it in I get a pop-up message on the phone saying 'this device is not compatible'. Why is that? It's just a charger for the case? I am not connecting anything strange to the phone itself?
Mind you, the car charger has no compatibility promises on the package, other than that it works with several Motorola phones and some others. But it shouldn't matter....it's the only MicroUSB car charger I could find, so it should power anything that has MicroUSB, such as the Mophie Juice Air. So now if I wanna charge the phone in the car I have to take it out of the case and use an iPhone car charger (which I hope will work now, as I haven't tried it yet.)

  • HELP (dont know were else to post this)

This is a simple question.. I must know tho....
In the Java Consile Window there are these "functions"
(And Id like an explanation as to what they mean / do / purpose)
    Java Plug-in 1.5.0_06
Using JRE version 1.5.0_06 Java HotSpot(TM) Client VM
    User home directory = hidden
    c: clear console window
f: finalize objects on finalization queue
    g: garbage collect
    h: display this help message
    l: dump classloader list
    m: print memory usage
    o: trigger logging
    p: reload proxy configuration
    q: hide console
    r: reload policy configuration
s: dump system and deployment properties
    t: dump thread list
    v: dump thread stack
    x: clear classloader cache
0-5: set trace level to <n>
IN BOLD.... Id like to know what those "do" like Ive said above....
So I can better learn about Java.
This will be a big help to me and I can help others.
    Thanks.

The Java Console documentation is here:
    http://java.sun.com/j2se/1.5.0/docs/guide/deployment/deployment-guide/console.html
It makes a lot of references to general concepts that are discussed at
length in the Java Plugin Guide
    http://java.sun.com/j2se/1.5.0/docs/guide/plugin/developer_guide/contents.html
I think you'll get much more meaningful answers if you ask specific
questions. There's more than a hint here of a "shopping list" approach.
For instance, do you really want to have "h: display this help message"
    explained to you?
The links above give you a lot of information. If you play around with
the Java Console and your own applets and observe behaviour that
conflicts with what you expect from the documentation, that would
form the basis of a specific and meaningful question.
