Duo Core 2 & Windows XP HOME (S2)

I just purchased an iMac 20" Duo Core 2. Being that I'm NOT an experienced Mac user, I had the CompUSA service tech install Windows for me. He told me that I couldn't install Windows XP HOME (S2) - that I had to install Windows XP Pro (S2) because of the new Duo Core 2 processor. XP Pro cost an extra $100.
Does anyone know how accurate this is? The current version of Boot Camp (1.1.1) states that XP HOME (S2) can be used.
If I had been better informed, I could have bought the 24" iMac with the money the Techs weasled me out of with their bad information and bad install of the XP system. I had to reinstall XP when I got home.
Thanks for your replies.

I've seen a few people stuble into this confusing area before, it is interesting to see that Microsoft isn't making things any clearer on their web page. Unfortuneatly mhunter was off base. As you can see on this page,
http://www.microsoft.com/licensing/highlights/multicore.mspx
Microsoft differentiates a processor from a core pretty clearly. At the bottom of the page it even mentions that while the per processor licensing (a server thing) doesn't apply to XP Pro, or XP Home the following applies...
"A. Microsoft Windows XP Professional and Microsoft Windows XP Home are not affected by this policy as they are licensed per installation and not per processor. Windows XP Professional can support up to two processors regardless of the number of cores on the processor. Microsoft Windows XP Home supports one processor."
A better description of this policy, and the product hardware limitations that are put in place can be found in the following Microsoft technical briefing paper.
http://download.microsoft.com/download/f/1/e/f1ecd771-cf97-4d98-9a1b-b86e3f24e08 f/multicorehyperthreadbrief.doc
In which it clearly states,
Software Do technically enforced processor limits
support multicore and hyperthreaded processors?
Windows XP Home Edition Yes
Windows XP Media Center Edition Yes
Windows XP Professional Yes
This microsoft BLOG page summarizes what I have outlined here.
http://blogs.msdn.com/oldnewthing/archive/2006/10/02/780255.aspx
The bottom line it, XP Home DOES support multiple cores on a single processor. If you have multiple processors, You'll need XP Pro regardless of how many cores they have.
More proof of this can be seen here.
http://searchwincomputing.techtarget.com/tip/0,289483,sid68_gci1189223,00.html
From this link you can see that XP Home does indeed install the Hardware Abstraction Layer (HAL) to support multple cores on a single processor (like the Intel iMacs). If you had a MacPro, XP Pro would be your only choice.
It's interesting to me that this issue is still so unclear since the PC world addressed it some time back.

  • Sharing hard drive with windows xp on imac intel duo core

    Hi,
I was wondering whether I could give over anymore of the hard disk on my imac intel duo core to Windows xp? If so, how would I go about doing that?
    Thanks in advance

At this point I think that you would need to use Boot Camp to remove the current partition and then make a bigger one and reinstall Windows.
Just an idea for you. There is an entire Apple Discussion forum dedicated to Boot Camp and Windows.
The Forum is at the bottom of the main Apple Discussions page under Windows Compatible Technology.

  • Windows 7 home premium on 27" core i7 horrible slow!

I have an imac bought in 2012. It is the 27" version core i7 quad core version with 16GB of RAMM.
When I run in bootcamp with windows 7 home premium 64bit applications etc, the mac is very slow in performance.
Even my other PC (core i5) installs for example the same application waaay more faster then my imac.
The pc has less ram, a slower cpu,...
I have also noticed in the taskmanager that I have 8 threads, and only 4 of them are used,...
    Anyone who knows a solution?

What is Windows Experience Index for everything?
All the Boot Camp 5.0 drivers installed successfully?
    16GB is available?
Hyper-Threading only helps and works when a process can be broken into threads and the core can as well (HT only adds about 20% but it does add more heat).
I would use AIDA64 for full monitoring, there are others that only monitor a single feature.

There is or was, not sure if it has been fixed yet, for the top BTO procesor in the Air when running Windows TurboBoost is not enabled which is a real performance killer. Check and see if it is enabled and active on yours.

Hi I have a HP Pavillion DV6-1355 dx windows 7 Home premium 64 bit and I have some major issues ,first when I bought this computer  I turned it on it automatically connected and downloaded a whole bunch of stuff I am not even sure what all ,my  P/N #VM222UA#ABA , S/N [Personal Information Removed] I dont even know what should and shouldnt be on here anymore . It has a sticker in keyboard area at bottom right corner and a windows 7 sticker  says Intel Duo core and yet I get troubleshooters refering to Vista ,AMD ,and several other computers .In my device manager it has a bunch of stuff with little yellow gears .I feel it has down loaded my old computers which I dont have but 1  and  my current ones which are all windows 7 64 bit . I was gong to scare my husband by starting his prinnter from mine wasnt even sure what I was doing but  I do remeber it saying that I would have to be in control over the pcs I cant remember exactly and I also wanted to make sure updates were done because my husband never did them so I thought great they will get regular updates. At that time we had 3 windows xps  1 professional 64 bit,1 hp media center 2005 64 bit and a windows xp home edition 32 bit .I didnt know much about pcs then I sought help but never got it resolved we had a differnt router and i beleave sbc global at time when I did it that computer ended up dieing so I no longer have it but yet I see its hardware listed and I see the AMD listed and SIS and Matrix with dates going back to 2003 and this computer is a 2009 . PLEASE HELP

    Hi lustyln,
I'm having a little trouble understanding all of what you are trying to explain. From what I can tell, it sounds like your PC has a lot of software problems and you want to know what is supposed to be there and what isn't.
For reference, here are your product specifications:
    http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?cc=us&dlc=en&docname=c01893242&lc=en&product=4043282
To get your PC software back to how it was when it was first purchased, run a system recovery:
    http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?cc=us&dlc=en&docname=c01867418&lc=en&product=4043282
    I hope this helps.

  • Want to be sure it's OK to install Windows XP Home on my New Mac mini

Last night I bought the Mac mini with DVD SuperDrive, 120GB hard drive, 1GB RAM, 2.0 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processor, and Leopard. At the Apple Store. Got an adapter so I can hook the mini up to my 23" Cinema Display (1998 vintage). Also got Fusion.
At another electronics store, I got Windows XP Home. I want to be sure the "home" version is OK on the mini. I have Windows XP Pro on a Dell laptop, but it came pre-installed, and I don't have a copy. I am told the Dell version wouldn't work on the mini anyway.
I got the mini because I rely on Adobe FrameMaker to make my living. Adobe has chosen not to upgrade Frame for Mac OS X, so I've been using it in Classic mode on my G4 Cube (currently running OS X, v 10.4.11). But Frame is seriously misbehaving now, and Apple no longer supports OS 9 Classic, even though it's associated with OS X. So my brilliant solution to the Adobe Frame problem is to RUN the Windows version of FrameMaker 7.2 (which I own) on the mini in Windows.
I'm looking for advice, if any, about what to do first, second, etc. And an answer about Windows XP Home being OK.
BTW, I have skimmed through this forum about 20 pages, and it's great. --Spot

That is a very good question, Dino, and I don't know the answer. This thread doesn't seem to be getting much attention and you might have better luck posting your question at the boot camp forum. I'm sure one of the veteran members will have an answer for you any time now.
Of course you could experiment and just try installing it; if your computer is relatively then it's not a big deal; you can back up your files on a flash drive and reconfigure you machine quickly. Reinstalling OSX takes awhile if you FUBAR your mini but I've done it once already. Still I wouldn't recommend anything that risky until you've got an answer from someone who knows.

  • Adobe Photoshop 7.0 on Windows Vista Home Premium

Today, I tried to install Photoshop 7.0 on my laptop with vista home premium. When Photoshop was almost installed, the setup said he was ready but the setup screen didn't went away. I closed the screen.
when I tried to open Photoshop then, the program starts normal but before you can do something there's a report saying: 'couldn't execute your request because of missing or invalid personalisation-information' (this is not perfect because I tried to translate it from dutch)
So, the program doesn't start. After this, I tried to remove Photoshop from the laptop but he says there's a log error and they can't remove Photoshop.
I have consequently a program that doesn't work and that I can't remove.
    Is there a solution?
When I installed Photoshop I used another name than the name of the computer, maybe vista doesn't accept this? Normally, you can do that, but I didn't do something like that on vista. If that's the problem, how can you change that name if the program doesn't start normally?
    thanks
    Michiel

  • Windows 7 RC to Windows 7 Home Premium

Looking for some clarifications and feedback on installation...
I have been running the Windows 7 RC (32 bit) on my MacBook Pro (Core 2 Duo) since late summer 2009. My Mac is currently running OS X 10.5.8, and I've operated the Windows OS through both Boot Camp (version 2.0) and Parallels with no problems. This detail is key, because I read an article which states Windows 7 requires Snow Leopard:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3986
I just bought Windows 7 Home Premium for the Windows side of my MBP because the RC is about to expire. I've been careful to make sure everything is going to be square with my machine before I go ahead and install the new, full version of Win7, so here's my dilemma:
My MacBook Pro is a Core 2 Duo, so it makes sense to install the 64 bit version of Windows on to the Boot Camp Partition. I'm not sure if I should do the Windows OS upgrade right in the existing Windows partition (which is running the 32 bit RC) while running Boot Camp, or if I should create a new Boot Camp partition and perform a clean install.
After reading several articles on the Apple Support area, it's stated that Windows 7 "needs" Snow Leopard 10.6 and Boot Camp 3.1 ... this creates another problem for me. I've avoided upgrading to Snow Leopard because of known issues while running Adobe software, web page displays, Cocoa issues, and problems displaying fonts. I do lots of graphic design with Adobe programs, and I can't afford to run in to performance issues. That said, I have to have Windows because there are a few programs I need which do not have a Mac counterpart.
I also read the Boot Camp installation instructions (found here: http://manuals.info.apple.com/enUS/Boot_Camp_Install-Setup10.6.pdf) and it says:
"You can use a 32-bit version of Windows 7 with any of these Mac computers:
An iMac or MacBook Pro introduced in 2007 or later
Any Intel-based Mac Pro, MacBook, or Mac mini
You can use a 64-bit version of Windows Vista or Windows 7 with any of these Mac computers:
A Mac Pro or MacBook Pro introduced in early 2008 or later
An iMac or MacBook introduced in late 2009 or later
If you’re not sure when your Mac computer was introduced, see http://www.apple.com/support/hardware, click your Mac model, and look for an article on identifying your Mac."
My MBP was released in either mid or late 2007, not the in aforementioned early 2008 period which states that 64-bit version of Windows 7 will operate. On the contrary, I have read that since my machine is a Core 2 Duo, my MBP is 64 bit and that it should support Windows 7. I'm getting incredibly confused now.
So... I have been successfully running the RC (32 bit) on Leopard 10.5.8; would I cause damage to the Mac side of my machine if I attempted to install Windows 7 Home Premium (64 bit), or should I go ahead with the Snow Leopard update to OS X and take my chances with the known issues (listed in the previous paragraph) in 10.6?
Lastly, which bit version can my machine truly support: 32 bit or 64 bit?
I know this has been wordy - thanks in advance for reading this, and for your responses and suggestions.

  • Windows 7 Home Premium Crashes in Sleep Mode

Over the last few days my Windows 7 PC refuses to wake up from sleep mode.

    crash dump file: C:\Windows\Minidump\053014-7129-01.dmp
This was probably caused by the following module: ntoskrnl.exe (nt+0x75BC0)
    Bugcheck code: 0xA (0xFFFFF8A0003954A8, 0x2, 0x0, 0xFFFFF80002EC225B)
    Error: IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL
    file path: C:\Windows\system32\ntoskrnl.exe
    product: Microsoft® Windows® Operating System
    company: Microsoft Corporation
    description: NT Kernel & System
Bug check description: This indicates that Microsoft Windows or a kernel-mode driver accessed paged memory at DISPATCH_LEVEL or above.
This appears to be a typical software driver bug and is not likely to be caused by a hardware problem.
The crash took place in the Windows kernel. Possibly this problem is caused by another driver that cannot be identified at this time.
I tried to analyze install the SDK to analyze the MiniDump files but the installation keeps failing.
My most recent mindump  - the last one before I tuned off sleep mode - is here
    https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/8391385/053014-7129-01.dmp
My impression is that an analysis of the dump file will help me zero in on the fault.
hope I can get some help on this and please let me know if I left out anything
    Thanks in advance.

The DMP file is inconclusive. You could run driver verifier to find the underlying issue but WPR is often easier.
In order to diagnose your problem you will need to download and install the below
Install the WPT (windows Performance Toolkit)
    http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=30652
Help with installation (if needed) is here
When you have, open an elevated command prompt and type the following
WPRUI.exe (which is the windows performance recorder) and check off the boxes for the following:
First level triage, CPU usage, Disk IO.
If you problem is not CPU or HD then check off the relevant box/s as well (for example networking or registry)  Please configure your as per the below snip
    Click Start
It will reboot 3 t imes and record the data to a file and tell you its name and location.
Zip the file and upload to us on Onedrive (or any file sharing service) and give us a link to it in your next post.
These crashes were related to memory corruption (probably caused by a driver).
Please run these tests to verify your memory and find which driver is causing the problem.
If you are overclocking (pushing the components beyond their design) you should revert to default at least until the crashing is solved. If you don't
know what it is you probably are not overclocking.
Since it is more likely to be a driver please run verifier first.
1-Driver verifier (for complete directions see our wiki here)
If verifier does not find the issue we can move on to this.
2-Memtest. (You can read more about running memtest here)

  • Windows Vista Home Basic 64-bit

I'm looking at the customisable configurations, and I see that you offer 8GB RAM but that a 64-bit system is required to support it. At the same time, the only option that explicity says it's 64-bit is the Business edition of Vista, which I definitely do not need. Is there any way to specify an order with Windows Vista Home Basic 64-bit?
Yes, I know what I'm talking about and I need the power, but none of the administrative nonsense associated with the Business addition. From Wikipedia:
"Similar to Windows XP Home Edition, Home Basic targets budget-conscious users not requiring advanced media support for home use. ... Home Basic supports one physical CPU, but with multiple cores. 64-bit Home Basic supports up to 8 GB of RAM. ... Comparable to Windows XP Professional and Windows XP Tablet PC Edition, Windows Vista Business Edition targets the business market. It includes all the features of Home Basic with the exception of Parental Controls and the Windows Vista Standard theme. This edition can join and participate in a Windows Server domain. It includes Internet Information Services, fax support, Rights Management Services client, Encrypting File System, system image backup and recovery, Offline Files, a single user Remote Desktop server, ad-hoc P2P collaboration capabilities, Shadow Copy support which provides access to previous versions of files, support for Tablet PCs, and other business oriented management features. The Vista Business edition supports up to two physical CPUs. 64-bit Business supports 128 GB of RAM."
I'm looking at a configuration with a high-power, dual-core processor and 8GB RAM with the 2GB disk cache on top of that for, among other things, high-volume, intense audio processing. None of the extras associated with Business are things I need, but I do need a 64-bit system to utilise 8GB RAM. Frankly, I just really don't want to have to pay $79 simply for the RAM support, I don't want to deal with it through Microsoft, and although the basic edition is apparently not eligible for a free Windows 7 upgrade, I can cross that bridge when I come to it.
    My questions:
If I'm configuring a machine with >3GB installed memory, will it by default be configured with the 64-bit version of the edition of Windows I've selected?
If so, will there be a cost difference? There is no cost difference between the listed 32- and 64-bit versions of the Business edition.
If not, is there any way to make this simple change on my order? Does Levono even ship Windows Vista Home Basic 64-bit?
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

    buzgun wrote:
Okay, good to know. I still need to know whether I can get Levono to ship my machine with the configuration I've selected, only with Vista Basic 64-bit
SInce Lenovo don't offer either type of Vista Home in a X64 version, the answer is quite simply, no.
    buzgun wrote:
what would be most cost-effective would also be appreciated.
Sweating on the OS cost when you are planning to put an expensive 8 GB of RAM into a system seems to be quite cost-ineffective IMO!
    Cheers,
    Bill
    I don't work for Lenovo
