Core Duo and the later Core 2 Duo is the technology that places two cpu cores together on a single silicon chip. This has no bearing on the ability to run Windows Applications.
The technologies that would interest you in this regard are programs that allow you to run Windows programs on your Mac. There are several, but perhaps the two most comon ones are Parallels and Boot Camp.
Boot Camp will allow you to dual boot your Mac into the Windows environment where you can run Windows XP natively on your Mac hardware.
Parallels will let you set up a virtual machine environment where you can run Windows XP from within the Mac OS X enviroment.

There are a few other solutions available as well such as Crossover for Mac.

  • Duo Core Vs Quad Core upgrade question

Looking for some solid answers on what improvements if any that a Quad Core (Q9650 3ghz) CPU would have ove a Duo Core (Q6850  3ghz) in Ppro CS4.Especially when it comes to AVCHD editing. Any thoughts as to this upgrade would be worth it?

Harm is correct, look at the Premiere Pro CS4 Benchmark (PPBM4) results and see the result for those two processors.  While you do get a small incremental inprovement it probably is not with the cost.

  • HT4241 HDMI cables for Macbook 13" duo core 2006

    Hi,
Firstly apologies if this question has been previously answered.  However I have been trawlling the internet for ages trying to find out the correct cables to set up a macbook to an HD tv.  All I want to do is connect two devices but everything I read seems to be about macbook pro 2009 onwards - what about those of us you have older macs?
Sometime ago I was given as a present an iwires mini display to hdmi cable set.  On the box it said suitable for Macbook pre 2010.  My Macbook is a 13" duo core 2006 . Anyway the cable didn't fit and because the package had been opened couldn't get a refund.
Please can anyone in simple terms tell me which HDMI cables I need to connect to the tv so that I get both audio and video.
    many thanks.

The Late 2008 model 5,1 Aluminum Unibody and the Late 2009 model 6,1 and Mid 2010 model 7,1 White Unibody have a Mini DisplayPort. The Early 2006 model 1,1 through Early 2008 model 4,1s plus the Early and Mid 2009 model 5,2s have Mini-DVI ports. Each would take a different adapter to connect with the TV.
You'll need a Mini-DVI to HDMI adapter and a cable from that to your TV. Here's the various types of Mini-DVI adapters on Amazon.com  http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_ss_i_2_16?url=search-alias%3Daps&field-keyword s=mini+dvi+to+hdmi+adapter&sprefix=mini+dvi+to+hdmi%2Caps%2C264
You'll also need audio cables to the TV using a 3.5mm stereo headphone jack to RCA sound plugs or a 3.5mm stereo input plug for audio. You attach it from the headphone jack of your MacBook to the appropriate audio input plugs on your TV.
If you connect the MacBook using a Mini-DVI to HDMI adapter you will probably need to use external speakers or a 3.5mm stereo headphone jack to RCA sound plugs connected to a stereo system for audio if your TV doesn't have separate RCA input plugs or a 3.5mm stereo input plug for audio with the HDMI plug. The Mini-DVI to HDMI doesn't carry audio and there're no audio plugs on most TVs to work with HDMI since it's expecting audio with the HDMI. Check your TV manual though to see if it might have audio plugs that work with one of the HDMI ports.

  • 2.0 GHz Intel Quad core i7 vs. 3.7 GHz Intel Duo Core i7 Processor: Why not make the Quad Core 3.7GHz?

I don't really understand processors, but is the 2.0GHz Quad Core i7 really a better processor in terms of performance? If it has 4 cores why not give it greater processing speed like 2.7 or 3.0 GHz?
I am asking because I am thinking about getting the high end Mac Mini, but I see that it's processor runs at 2.0GHz and the others in the line run at 2.5 and 2.7 respectively. Why is this?

    I'm really oversimplifying here, but...
Let's just assume that each core runs at full speed all the time, the total performance of that processor would be the sum of the running totals of each core:
    Duo Core i7 = 2 (cores) * 2.7 GHZ = 5.4 Ghz total processor power
    Quad Core i5 = 4 (cores) * 2.0 GHZ = 8.0 Ghz
Like I said, oversimplified.  But, you get the point.  Not to mention, most apps still aren't optimized, so at a given time they only use a single core anyway. In this case, it'd be more beneficial to have more cores, since they would (hypothetically) be able to run more simultaneous processes (four vs. two in your case).
I gues the greater question is: what were you planning on using the mini for?  Most CPUs go underutilized anyway, so you may be better off getting a 2.0, and maxing out your RAM and maybe adding a SSD.  Those upgrades (the SSD especially) will result in a very noticeable increase in performance.

  • Memron 64 bit Duo Core

Well, I'm planning to get a 15" Macbook Pro, but should I wait until August/September for the Memron 64 bit Duo Core on MacbookPro? Will this processor provide really big improvements?
    Read it here: http://forum.osx86project.org/index.php?showtopic=16569

    Hello,
You know, I was asking this same question a few weeks
ago. The general reply was that there are next to no
applications that are 64-bit, so what is really the
point of getting that chip? I think there will be
some speed improvements and/or heat improvements.
I've also heard that it may not be an "upgrade" to
the current core duo chips, but instead a new line
of chips. I have nothing to validate that, but I
    just heard it once.
Plus, if the chip is released in August/September, I
am just guessing it would take a few months for Apple
and other companies to integrate it into their
computers if they so choose. This is pure
speculation though. Althoug it would have been
approximately six months since the MBP's release, so
an upgrade wouldn't be out of the question, I guess.
I guess it just comes down to if you are willing to
wait that long. It may be worth it and it may not.
I have decided not to wait, partly because I am
starting college in September and want a few months
to get adjusted to OS X (I am switching from
Windows). Well, I hope I could help somewhat.
Wait till tommorow, we will enjoy today...

  • How Speedy is Duo Core?

I am a pro photographer working mostly with Photoshop. I currently have a 1.5ghz G4 Powerbook (1 year old) but I am looking at purchasing an Duo Core entry level iMac. My question is: Am I going to find a big performance increase with the new iMac over my old PB? How speedy are these things?
    Martin.

I have the same machine and concur. MacMall is having a sale on this machine for a great price. I do not work for them or anything, but I am trying to convince my brother to purchase one since I am tired of troubleshooting the "other" operating system's issues with him.....a case of self interest you might say....
The 2.16 I am using is a 24" but I use 2x2gb ram for interleaving benefits. There is a slight improvement from the 3gb (1x2) I used to have in the machine. I figured with RAM so cheap (60 bucks for 2gb stick) I might as well try. I did and it payed off. You could say the last .333gb of RAM gained cost 60 bucks but the overall snappiness is better. I rendered multi CPU with Cinebench 10 and it scored 4400 vs. 4000 (+/- 15) on the previous setup.
THe 24" white I mac is on sale for 1449 or so.. Check it out. For the money, I think it beats out the aluminum 20" iMac, but then again, it doesn't look as elegant. I also use my iMAC with Aperture, iMOVIE, iDVD, 3d Modeling (newest foray) and the screen has NONE of the issues regarding uneven color or brightness, glare, etc....that others have mentioned on the newer models........

  • Differences between core 2 duo and duo core i5

so apple have release the new 2011 MBA with duo core i5 on it. except for the backlit keyboard and thunderbolt.. the CPU are the only improvement overall.
im not familliar with computer CPU. i do not know their perfomance. but common sense are, NEW mean good and better than OLD.
do anyone know what is the difference between 2010 MBA 1.6Ghz core2duo and 2011MBA 1.6 Ghz i5?
apple said that it is 2.5X faster than core2duo.
but after upgrading to LION. im actually worrying about my 2G RAM. even without any heavy application running behind, i only have 53MB free on my system memory according to activity monitor.
here is the question. is it worth to sell away the 2010 MBA and get a 2011MBA?
i have done some calculations, probably i will need to add up another  USD 380 to get a new 2011 basic spec MBA. (a total or 999 + 380 for a 2011 11" MBA)
or should i just stick with the 2010 MBA before a new one comes out next year.
please leave your comment. and english is not my 1st language. please forgive me if there's some mistake.

The Intel Core 2 Duo is far from outdated, it's a 64 bit processor, dual core which for most people is all they need.
Apple hasn't bloated OS X or their programs yet to overwork dual cores, but they are working on it if you upgrade to Lion it starts with a slight performance hit.
I have a 15" machine with a Intel Core 2 Duo and a decent video card and it's still a nice machine for being 4 years old, can even run Lion well as well as three other operating systems. Windows to Linux. I replaced the hard drive with a 7,200 RPM and maxed the RAM to 4GB myself.
What likely is outdated is your video card, the 13" Apple treats as a "MacBook" a consumers machine with little video horsepower. So that's where your problem really lies.
All you can do is, max the RAM, switch out your hard drive, (not for a SSD as you don't have the SATA 6 pipes that can handle it and it's a waste of money on a older machine with such a crappy video card), a 750GB - 1TB 7,200 RPM hard drive so you have speed and storage space.
Reinstall the OS fresh, all your programs from fresh sources and your files cherry picked from a backup storage drive (not timemachine, migration/setup assistant, clone restores or you'll go slow again and have crap) Stay on 10.6 and you'll have a good machine until it craps out, out of warranty and too much to fix it, buy a new Lion infected box.

  • Using Adobe CS2  with mc book pro intel duo core 2,16 .17"

As a designer working on high definition heavy graphic files intended for digital printing, i am about to go for mc book pro 2,16 duo core and 2gb ram.
I need to use CS2 (photoshop, illustrator) and know that it is not a native soft version, so not otimized for this processor. Any how, I just cannot wait CS3 (Adobe says 2007 whenever they are ready !), so I need advise of professional users of such applications on this mc book pro intel duo core 2,16 17".
I heard pretty scary rumours about such a professional use.
PLEASE HELP BEFORE I GO FOR PC/WIN !!!

CS runs beautifully, with really no lag at all. Keep in mind that I haven't gotten to upgrading from 1 GB RAM to 2 yet, since my tablet died and I needed to replace that. I just installed CS2 last week, and there is a lag, and we'll soon see if more memory helps. Everything works fine, no crashes, etc., but there is in my opinion a noticeable difference in loading time, and various other tasks within the apps take longer. Again, CS2 works just fine, but the performance of CS is much better.

I'm afraid your Mac cannot be upgraded to Lion, and thus is not compliant with iCloud. The only option you have there is to set Mail up manually to access your iCloud email, but the other facilities won't work.

  • How do I upgrade OS X 10.5.8 on my iMac with Intel duo core processor

I have an iMac 24" with 2,16 Ghz Intel Core Duo processor and 2Gb 667 Mhz DDR2 SDRAM running on OS X 10.5.8 to Lion?
I know I have to upgrade first to snowleopard???
If so SnowLeopard is not available in the iCentres etc.
    What to do??
    Brgds,
    Nils

Your iMac is a Core 2 Duo not a Core Duo according to this http://www.everymac.com/systems/apple/imac/stats/imac-core-2-duo-2.16-24-inch-sp ecs.html
Which is good since the specifications for OSX Lion require a Core 2 Duo as minimum processor:
Mac computer with an Intel Core 2 Duo, Core i3, Core i5, Core i7, or Xeon processor
    2GB of memory
    OS X v10.6.6 or later (v10.6.8 recommended)
    7GB of available space
Some features require an Apple ID; terms apply.
Some features require a compatible Internet service provider; fees may apply.
The road to OSX Lion requires you to have OSX Snow Leopard before which can be bought from Apples Online Store http://store.apple.com/us/product/MC573Z/A?fnode=MTY1NDAzOA but is not avaiable as a download.
After installation of OSX Snow Leopard and installation of neccessary updates to it you can then use the Mac App Store to buy OSX Lion and install it.
    http://www.apple.com/macosx/how-to-buy/
For OSX Lion an upgrade of your RAM to 4GB might be advisable.

  • Can not for the life of me get printing to work on my mac mini duo core

I have a photosmart 7550 and laserjet 1012. And I can't get my mac mini to recognize either printer. This has been driving me nuts. I was a long time mac user in the 80s and early 90s. Switched to Windows. Just switched back with the mac mini (intel duo core). And I hate to say it, but it's just been an awful transition. My wife, which hates me that I made her get rid of her windows machine and switched it with this mini. If I don't get this mac printing I'm going to have to get rid of it.
I've installed/reinstalled drivers from HP, removing the library/printer/hp directory. Guten-print. Nothing is working for me.
    Can anyone help me?
mac mini duo core   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

If the printers are not being recognized by the Printer Setup Utility, it may mean that the printing services has not started up. You can check for this by using the Activity Monitor (/Applications/Utilities). Set it to show "All Processes", then click on the "Process Name" tab. That will sort the running processes in alphabetical order. Look for an entry for "cupsd". If you find no such entry, printing services is not running. You can probably turn it on by enabling Printer sharing (System Preferences-->Sharing).
There should be a driver for the Laserjet 1012 that will be useable once you get the computer to recognize that there is a printer there. This according to the Apple article listing the drivers included with Intel Macs . Unfortunately, that article does not list a driver for the 7550. According to HP's support site, they do have drivers for Mac OS X 10.4. There is no entry, however, for the Intel Macs. I think you will have to wait for HP to release Intel drivers for the Photosmart printer.

  • Mighty Mouse problem with duo core intel mac mini & 26" LCD/TV display

I have an Olevia 26" LCD/TV display connected to my Intel Duo core mac mini and I have been using a Mighty Mouse with it from the start but all of a sudden the mouse pointer will not come out of the upper right corner. It moves out a little and then pops back into the corner.
I connected the Mighty Mouse to my g4 PowerBook and it tracks and scrolls fine. I've also cleaned it and tried it on a solid, dark service while connected to the mac mini and those things don't help either.
Any suggestions anyone. I've been using the Mighty Mouse for months and I love especially the ability to scroll horizonitally as I use Final Cut Pro and that features is GREAT in the timeline window.
I can't seem to find anything here in the discussions specifcally with this issue so any guidance would be appreciated!

    hi there--
if all is fine on the install disk, run disk repair http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=302672. if not, i would reset the open firmware. do this by holding apple-option-o-f on keyboard while you start up and you get a screen that says "welcome to open firmware". type in following commands, without quotations-- "reset-nvram" (hit return) and "reset-all" (hit return). second command restarts the computer. good luck.[:)]
