Duplex printing on Brother broken update 2.8?

Greetings. I installed Brother Printer Software Update 2.8 the other day, and now printing duplex on my Brother HL-5250DN doesn't work. When printing a multi-page document, I can see the printer acting as if it was printing duplex (by pulling the sheet it just printed back), but nothing appears on the second side. The full document is printed, however; all text is there, just on twice as many sheets as should be needed, with nothing on the second sides of the paper.
Having this fixed soon would save trees. :-)

Solved by re-installing Brother CUPS driver from the Brother web site.
Hopefully Apple will fix their 'software update' - but at least we can work around this for now.
The main Brother download site, with links for all countries, is:
http://welcome.solutions.brother.com/bsc/Public_s/index.html
After paging through the menus to get to the 10.7.2 software for my 8860DN, I only downloaded and installed the CUPS driver.
Perhaps unnecessary (?) but I then deleted the existing 8860DN from my System Preferences and then added it back.  All back to normal.

  • Duplex Printing Not Working - Brother HL4570CDW

    Hey all,
I managed to get a network printer setup and it works; however, the only thing that isn't working is duplex printing. I installed the driver from AUR: https://aur.archlinux.org/packages/brother-hl4570cdw/
In my default options I have "Two-Sided Printing" set to "Long-Edge Binding". But the CUPS printer page at localhost:631/printers/metafont (where metafont is the name/URL of the printer) shows me:
    Description: metafont
    Location:    metafont
Driver:    Brother HL-4570CDW series CUPS (color, 2-sided printing)
    Connection:    lpd://metafont/BINARY_P1
    Defaults:    job-sheets=none, none media=na_letter_8.5x11in sides=one-sided
What concerns me here is the sides=one-sided, I have a feeling that's a problem. In any case, I tried to print a PDF using evince and in "Page Setup" it tells me that the two-sided option is "Not available" and I also tried to print from the command line and adding the "-o sides=two-sided-long-edge" option but that didn't work either.
    Any help would be appreciated!

    He Daniel.
The standard HP ePrint feature does not support Duplex printing, I would assume that the same applies for HP ePrint Enterprise:
Are there any limitations that I should be aware of when using ePrint?
Duplexing (printing on both sides of the page) is not supported.

  • Brother Duplex Printing Problems

I have a Brother HL-5150D printer that is connected to a Windows WinXP machine. I connect my MacBook to the WinXP machine through a wireless connection. I have confirmed that the printer is correctly shared (i.e. I can print to it); however, I do not have duplex capabilities. I can only print single sided even though the duplex options are present in Microsoft Word (for example). I did not have any trouble with duplex printing in Tiger. The problem appeared after upgrading to Leopard.
Please help - want to save paper!

I was able to print double-sided by going to http://localhost:631/ - I found all my printers under the printer tab. I set the printer options there to double-sided. Now when I go to a Word document, select print, the document will print double- sided no matter what is set under the layout option in the print window.
I don't really understand how all this works but I saw this suggestion on a landscape question and it solved my double-sided problem.

  • Brother Printer won't duplex print A4

    Hi
I have a Brother laser printer HL-5150D printing from a 20" iMac using OSX 10.5.4 that has stopped printing duplex but apparently only when trying to print to A4 paper size. As A4 is my default size this is a problem for me.
If I set the paper size as US Letter in the print dialogue box the printer will duplex however the print area is reduced by about 15 - 20% which even when printing on actual A4 paper leaves a very large 3 - 4 cm empty border around the print area.
Any body have any ideas on how to get duplex printing on to A4 paper size without going through the US Letter route and ending up with a reduced size print image?

I just took a picture of my print layout, this should help - I hope.
This is the set-up under Leopard, which I now realize you are not running - in Tiger, under Pages etc. go to the bottom where it says Summary, open that, then click on the triangle next to Layout, and it will give you the option of two sided printing.

  • Duplex printing stoped working after one of the recent updates.

    Hi,
For some reason my HP Laserjet P3015 stoped printing duplex. Some dialogs show the "beidseitig drucken" option and I can check this and get duplexing. But I configured duplexing in the HP printer settings and it is ignored. I had system settings from earlier times with the option enabled but they seem to not work any longer. So how do I set up a printer to print duplex from all applications?
Thanks for helping me saving trees!
    Best
      Stefan

It is possible to set duplex as the default setting via CUPS - the core printing system used in OS X. Using a web browser you open an internal web page, select the printer you want to modify, make your changes and then save this as the default. Then when you print, this setting will stop you from having to access the driver menus.
But there is a caveat to this setitng being used and that is based on the application being used. If the application uses or involves the default print dialog in the print job submission, then you will get a duplex print job. But there are applications that bypass the default print dialog and will therefore submit the print job without the settings you have set. The Print icon in Word for Mac 2011, part of the MS Office 2011 suite, is an example of the print dialog and thus the default settings being ignored. But if you select File > Print in Word, this will invoke the print dialog and your defaults will be honoured.
To access CUPS, open Safari and type
    http://127.0.0.1:631/printers
Note that for OS X 10.8, the CUPS page is blocked by default. To enable it, open Terminal and type "sudo cupsctl WebInterface=yes" (without the quotation marks). Enter the admin password when prompted and then refresh the browser view.
With the CUPS web page open, select the printer you want to modify. Then from the Administration drop menu, change to "Set Default Options".
This will show a new page with some menu headings (links). You may have to check each one but one of them will have the duplex (or two sided) setting. With the option selected you then need to scroll down the list to the bottom of the page where you will see the ‘Set Default Options’ button. Click this and you will then be presented with an authentication window. Enter the account name and password that has been set as the admin for this Mac. And then press the Log In button. You will then see another page stating that the information change is completed.
You can now check that the change has been successful by selecting to print this page from Safari. With the correct printer selected, change to the relevant menu to ensure you modification has worked.

  • Reader 10.1 Update 2 Duplex Printing

After upgrading our machines to 10.1.2 I see that duplex printing is enabled by default. This caused some confusion in our office.  Here are 2 ways to fix this:
When printing, uncheck "print on both sides"
If you want to use an automated tool (for corporate roll out) change/create this registry key:
    [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Adobe\Acrobat Reader\10.0\AVGeneral]
    "iDuplexMode"=dword:00000001
    1 = no duplex
0 (or key does not exist) = duplex
    Hopefully this helps someone else.

  • Cannot make duplex printing as default in CUPS

I cannot seem to activate default duplex printing setting on my Brother MFC-8660DN through CUPS.
I tried to enable it by going through the CUPS interface (localhost:631). However, even though it is set to "duplex no tumble" as default and it shows on the print dialog ("two sided" option checked), the pages still print single sided.
Strangely, if I uncheck and check again the "two sided" option in the print dialog, the document prints in duplex mode.
I have tried updating the drivers (used the latest Brother CUPS drivers dated 2/15/10), resetting CUPS, deleting/adding the same printer (both USB and network connection), and the problem persists. The same thing happens if I print (via network) from my wife's macbook (10.6.2 as well).
On the other hand, if I use the default PCL driver or the Brother BR-Script3 driver the default duplex setting works.
Has anyone had this same problem?

    Hi @BigKeith,
    Welcome to the HP Forums!
I noticed that you are trying to setup the duplex printing as default with your Mac and your HP Photosmart 5520. I am happy to help with these settings!
For further assistance, I will need to know, the version of the Mac Operating System you are using. If you do not know the Operating System you are using, please visit this website. Whatsmyos. Also are you using A4 size paper? Or Letter?
In the meantime, please take a look at this guide. Printing on Both Sides of the Paper (Duplexing) in Mac OS X v10.6. This also works for versions up to 10.9.
Hope this helps, and hope to hear from you soon!

  • Duplex printing ceases

I have my iMac connected to a Brother HL-5350DN printer. I normally duplex print, but on Monday this suddenly stopped operating - it now only prints p 1, apparently duplexes but gives me a blank rear page, then prints p 2 on a new page and again duplexes (apparently) with a blank back etc etc.  Setting in print dialogue boxes and in preferences seem to be unchanged and OK. Ideas?

You are not alone.  From what I can tell, most Brother printer users lost the ability to duplex with the recent Apple Software Update: "Brother Printer Update 2.8."  This happened to me and many others.  There are threads here on the boards which discuss this.
You CANNOT fix this by deleting the Brother drivers and running Software Update again.  In fact, Software Update is exactly the problem.  When there is a "Brother Printer Update" with a version number other than 2.8, you can run it.  Until then, decline to install the BPU 2.8.  I have been prompted serveral times now to reinstall the update.
To fix you Brother printers, you need to head over to the Brother support site, enter the information regarding your particular printer, and downloand/install the Brother drivers.  Some have deleted their printers and reinstalled them after installing the drivers from Brother, others not - still with sucess.  My advice would be to delete the printer, install the driver from Brother, then install your printer again.  In any event, do NOT use the Apple Brother Printer Update 2.8 until the problem is fixed.  I would assume the version number will change.
Please report the problem to Apple:  http://www.apple.com/feedback/macosx.html

  • CS5.5 InDesign: Last 2 pages of multipage duplex print come out 1-sided

Using CS5.5 InDesign, last 2 pages of a multipage duplex print come out 1-sided. Same page ranges print OK in PDF. Printer is HP Color Laserjet 4700 with latest device firmware. Have latest HP drivers on Mac OS 10.7.
This is a recent problem. Had no problems with CS5 InDesign duplex printing from this computer to this printer until a couple weeks ago. First sign of an issue was that printing slowed to a crawl. Literally 5 minutes to resolve one page to the printer. Updated the printer firmware and speedy printing returned, but then noticed the duplex printing issue. Problems began about the same time as a Mac OS system update, but I'm not sure which came first, the software update or the printing issues. No problems with the printer from other software or other computers on the network.
I have read that certrain InDesign print settings sometimes produce unexpected results in some computer environments. Am hoping this is the case, and someone on this forum will know the trick.

    evollowitz wrote:

I think for most users, "the trick" that produces the most consistently predictable result is to never print directly from InDesign; always go to PDF and print that. Personally, I haven't even attempted to print from InDesign since CS2.

  • Can't do duplex printing!

I'm in an office with four iMacs running OS X Leopard v10.5.8.
We're all using CS4 Acrobat 9 Pro v9.4.6 (which Check For Updates tells me is up-to-date).
We're printing to a networked Xerox Phaser 6180DN.
And we can't print anything in two-sided duplex from Acrobat Pro.
We can print in duplex from every other application on the iMacs (including other CS4 apps) without problem.
But I need to be able to print non-CS PDF files in duplex.
I've done Google searches and searches within Adobe Help.
I've found the File>Properties>Advanced>Duplex Flip Long Edge
    This doesn't make any difference.
Please don't tell me to upgrade to CS5 or Acrobat X Pro ... that's out of my hands.
Please do tell me how I can enable duplex printing from Acrobat 9 Pro!

Guys ... I've been using Macs and Adobe products since the late 80s.
I still have a copy of Illustrator 88 (the original one) sitting on a ZIP disc somewhere.
I do have a clue on using these applications.
That's why problems like this are so frustrating. It should simply work ... and it doesn't!
And Yes ... both are set to double sided printing and No it doesn't print doubled sided:
    1. File>Properties>Advanced>Duplex Mode is set to: Duplex Flip Long Edge
    2. In the Layout pane in the Print window, Two Sided is set to Long Edge Binding
And all the pages are printed one one side of the paper.
Further, we went the long way around and tried to print the catalog directly from the source InDesign file, which takes fricking forever.
Even more annoying was that some of the pages were printed double sided and some of the pages were printed single sided.
Now, I can pull up large documents in Microsoft Word 2008 Mac (which I HATE - I use Apple Pages at home) and just click Two Sided from Off to Long Edge Binding ... and I get a perfect (well almost) double sided print.
    Now what?????

  • Can't get duplex printing to work

I have a HP Color LaserJet 4650 which is a duplex unit. Before 10.5 I would print regularly selecting in the Layout "Two-Sided" and it would work fine. Now, in 10.5 it seems that no matter what I try it will not print on both sides... help? or is this some bug that needs to be sorted out?
    David

This is still broken in 10.5.1. I found a trick that works for my printer... using the CUPS (Common UNIX Printing System) configuration system as a workaround.
Go to http://localhost:631/ in your web browser.
    Then click "manage printer".
Click "set printer options" on the printer with problems.
Scroll down to "duplex" under finishing and change the option here to "Long edge".
Duplex print, although you lose the option to single print it seems without going through this process.
If it works for your printer post it here.
