Duplicate Absolutely Positioned Layers...is this possible?

I'm just plodding along through an old Web Design project
book and have come to a part that has us copy and paste a layer 5
times in Design view. I have clicked on every pixel of the layer
outline and tried Pasting, Pasting Special...all it does is create
a huge new layer that spans the entire screen and doesn't show up
in the Layers panel, and doesn't invoke the Layers properties at
the bottom of the screen when selected.
I have played with the Preferences for Copy/Paste, gone
looking through Dreamweaver help files and forums for an answer.
The solutions have been either A) 'Be sure you click the top left
corner of the layer before you copy it' ...doesn't work, or B)
'Don't use layers.' (Surely, there are people here with more useful
advice).
Why is this seemingly basic task so counterintuitive? Does
anybody have a REAL solution?

  • Using PSE 9 and would like to Copy and PASTE to make duplicate copies of photos, is this possible?

    I know that there is a Copy facility in PSE 9.  Is there also the equivalent of PASTE.  I would like to copy some of my beautiful pictures and
    give each copy a different CAPTION.  My understanding is that the Copy feature used to create a new, enhanced version of the SAME photo.  Is
    this a correct assessment.

    Just tried File, Duplicate with one pix select and it duplicated.  It should
    also work with multiple pix selected.
    Thank you very much for the information.  It's greatly appreciated.

  • Box model/none absolute positioning with flash

    In recent years none-absolute positioning (or box model positioning) has become the norm with HTML/CSS
    this is uselfull for dynamic functions which appear on an event (such as an object which appears when a button is clicked on or a error message that appears when a form box is given invalid input because it automatically inserts itself it the right place.)
    One very important example of this is when you have a form which automatically produces an error message and the error message appears bellow the input area which caused it and the rest of the page is pushed down.
    With none absolute positioning the developer does not need to worry about this.
    But if the objects are given absolute position then it becomes a massive problem, the developer has to go about giving the objects differetn positions dependant on if dynamic objects appear or not
    potentially the developer has to consider all possible variables, and code if statements which determine the position of all static objects for all possible variables which dynamic objects could take.
    so does flash have a "none absolute positioning" solution to this problem.

    Before you get all happy and pleased with yourself, APDivs or Layers seldom work well as a primary layout method. Here are some reasons why:
    http://apptools.com/examples/pagelayout101.php
    You're much better off using default CSS positioning (which is no positioning at all) along with CSS margins, padding and floats.  If you don't believe me, check your page in non-IE browsers with increased/decreased text-sizes (zoom, text only).

  • Can Layers be given RELATIVE, rather than ABSOLUTE position

    I'm having no luck finding an answer to this in HELP. I place
    the layer's anchor in a table, then position the layer. If I
    subsequently add (or remove) any lines above the anchor, everything
    on the page moves down (or up), but the layer stays where it was,
    relative to the page, not the anchor.
    If there are several layers on the page this means a wholeot
    of repositioning every time I do an edit up-page.
    Any advice?

    This may help you understand positioning a bit -
    There are 4 different types of positioning:
    Absolute
    Relative
    Fixed
    Static
    Here is a brief explanation of each kind of positioning (with
    regard to
    placement of elements on the page only)....
    Position:absolute (or A/P elements)
    This does several things -
    1. It 'removes' the element from the flow of the code on
    the page so that
    it can no longer influence the size or position of any other
    page element
    (except for those contained within it, of course).
    2. The absolutely positioned element takes its position from
    the position of
    its closest PARENT *positioned* element - in the
    absence of any explicitly
    positioned parent, this will default to the <body> tag,
    which is always
    positioned
    at 0,0 in the browser viewport.
    This means that it doesn't matter where in the HTML code the
    layer's code
    appears (between <body> and </body>), its
    location on the screen will not
    change (this assumes that you have not positioned the A/P
    element within
    a table or another A/P element, of course).
    Furthermore, the space in
    which
    this element would have appeared were it not positioned
    is not preserved
    on the screen. In other words, absolutely positioned elements
    don't take
    up any space on the page. In fact, they FLOAT over the page.
    Position:relative (or R/P elements)
    In contrast to absolute positioning, a relatively positioned
    page element is
    *not* removed from the flow of the code on the page, so
    it will use the
    spot
    where it would have appeared based on its position in
    the code as its
    zero point reference. If you then supply top, right,
    bottom, or left
    positions
    to the style for this element, those values will be
    used as offsets from
    its
    zero point.
    This means that it DOES matter where in the code the
    relatively positioned
    element appears (, as it will be positioned in that location
    (factoring in
    the offsets) on the screen (this is true for any placement in
    the code).
    Furthermore, the space where this element would have
    appeared is
    preserved in the display, and can therefore affect the
    placement of
    succeeding elements. This means that the taller a relatively
    positioned element is, the more space it forces on the page.
    Position:static
    As with relative position, static positions also "go with
    the flow". An
    element with a static position cannot have values for
    offsets (top, right,
    left, bottom) or if it has them, they will be ignored. Unless
    explicitly
    positioned, all div elements default to static positioning.
    Position:fixed
    A page element with this style will not scroll as the page
    content scrolls.
    Support for this in elements other than page backgrounds is
    quirky
    There are several other things you need to know:
    1. ANY page element can be positioned - paragraphs, tables,
    images, lists,
    etc.
    2. The <div> tag is a BLOCK level tag. This means that
    if it is not
    positioned or explicitly styled otherwise, a) it will always
    begin on a new
    line on the screen, and b) it will always force content to a
    new line below
    it, and c) it will always take up the entire width of its
    container (i.e.,
    width:100%).
    3. The placement of A/P elements *can* affect the BEHAVIOR of
    other
    elements
    on the page. For example, a 'layer' placed over a hyperlink
    will mask that
    hyperlink.
    You can see a good example of the essential difference
    between absolute and
    relative positioning here -
    http://www.great-web-sights.com/g_layersdemo.asp
    You can see a good demonstration of why using layers for a
    page layout tool
    is dangerous here -
    http://www.great-web-sights.com/g_layer-overlap.asp
    Based on this, a static div (no longer a 'layer') would be
    what you want.

    I would suggest you visit an Apple dealer, preferably an Apple Store if there's one in your city, and ask for assistance in determining what you need. The questions and issues you bring up are rather complex to address in a technical support forum and would be better addressed in person where you and the salesperson can ask questions back and forth to arrive at the optimal setup.

  • Exporting layers of audio from After Effects  cs6 to Premiere / or Audition? Is this possible?

    exporting layers of audio from After Effects  cs6 to Premiere / or Audition? Is this possible?
    Help - I have an After effects project with multiple layered files and want to copy these to Premiere / Audition. For example I know if you select multiple video files from After Effects these can be pasted straight into Premiere intact - but this does not work with audio. I want to take existing layered audio files from After Effects to Audition / or Premiere but can't copy and paste - is there a simple solution for this?

    Hi thanks Dave for responding - yes that could work as a 'workaround' -  I was hoping there would be a way I can keep the existing independent audio layers and corresponding audio levels from After Effects- in the same way I can copy and paste video files from After Effects to Premiere - rather than exporting a flattened AIFF /WAV from After Effects.
    This would then allow me a lot more control working on the final edit - especially as currently a lot of the audio layers overlap. It does seem there is no simple solution for this, so  otherwise I can do what you suggest - and 'stagger all the audio files' in sequence so they do not overlap on the timeline and then when I import the flattened exported AIFF file into Audition/ Premeire / I then can cut it up again and recreate the overlaps. Was hoping there might be a simple copy + paste method or other 'export method' but I guess this is simply not possible. It would save me about 7 hours of work, but not the end of the world I guess
    One final point - some of the audio clips are .mp3s but the majority are WAVS, hopefully this should not create any issues on the export.
    thanks again for your help, if you or anyone has any other solution pls let me know

  • Positioning Layers

    Hoping someone can help...
    I am working on a site (not done but here's the address:
    thetayloredspa.com)
    My menu bar is in a layer which overlaps the tables of the
    page. I want it to be on the left side of the table, but not all
    the way over. It looks right in DWMX, but is all over the place on
    different screen resolutions. Is there a way to make it stay put
    relating to the table?
    TIA,
    Sandy

    Screen resolution is not the important factor here - it's
    browser viewport
    width. As this width changes, your tables seek new center
    points. The
    layers, being absolutely positioned, are stuck in their
    specified locations,
    so the tables move away from the layers. The fix is simple -
    It depends on whether you are using absolute positioning on
    the page, as to
    which method might be best, but in either event, this will
    work -
    </head>
    to this -
    <style type="text/css">
    <!--
    body { text-align:center; }
    #wrapper { text-align:left; width:760px; margin:0
    auto;position:relative; }
    /* 760px will display on an 800px screen maximized browser
    window without */
    /* horizontal scrollbars. */
    -->
    </style>
    </head>
    change this -
    <body ...>
    to this -
    <body ...>
    <div id="wrapper">
    and this -
    </body>
    to this -
    <!-- /wrapper -->
    </div>
    </body>
    and see if that helps.

  • Adding a Layer (absolute position div) to a locked page

    Maybe I am just not understanding templates but I have a
    really simple one that has one editable region called "content". I
    want to add a absolute positioned div to the content area but DW
    tells me this would require changing code that is locked by the
    template. I thought that the editable area automatically put in by
    DW would accommodate the added code (css) that DW puts in when
    adding a template to the page.
    So what is the Editable area called "Head" used for anyways
    if not for situations like this?
    Thanks

    Here's the problem with layers in template child pages, and a
    simple
    solution.
    When you DRAG a layer onto the page in DW (this means you
    click on the layer
    icon in the Insert Toolbar and drag the layer on the page),
    DW wants to put
    the code for that layer immediately under the body tag, e.g.,
    BEFORE DRAG -
    <body...>
    <table>
    AFTER DRAG -
    <body ...>
    <div id="foo" style="position:absolute; ...>LAYER
    STUFF</div>
    <table>
    In a template child page, this region is usually not part of
    your editable
    region, and so the layer's code is rejected by the template
    engine. This is
    a bad thing.
    If instead of dragging the layer onto the page, you use
    INSERT | Layer, that
    should work provided your cursor is in an editable region,
    but since
    editable regions are usually within tables or other layers,
    you have just
    broken one of the rules listed above. This is also a bad
    thing.
    THE SOLUTION -
    Open your template page in DW, and create a special place
    where it is SAFE
    to put your layers. In code view, find this -
    </body>
    and click so that your cursor insertion point is just to the
    left of
    </body>.
    Now, use INSERT | Template Objects > Editable Region, and
    name this region
    "Layer Pad" or something like that.
    When you save your template page, all your child pages will
    now have the
    LayerPad editable region on them.
    THE BIG FINISH -
    On any child page where you need a layer, just click in this
    editable
    region, and use INSERT | Layer. Bada bing, bada boom.

  • Is this possible to load HTML Widget to CS4 like CS5

    Hi Everyone!
    I have used Photoshop CS4 & CS5. I have created one CS5 Extensions Panel using HTML Widget from Adobe Configurator II .
    In Photoshop CS5 Extensions Panel HTML widget shows Image & Text in HTML window.
    Hence Is this possible to use HTML Widget in Photoshop CS4 or How to Load HTML file in Photoshop CS4 to Extensions Panel.
    Thanks in advance.

    Not exactly sure how you where planning to display that HTML content in relation to the overall page, but given the limitations of Flash... that may just not be possible...
    But, it would be a simple matter to display an HTML iframe over the top of or behind a Flash .swf... So while the iframe would not be a part of the .swf, it certainly could be designed to make it look as though it were.
    Controling the stacking order or layering of content on a Web page is accomplished through z-indexing. Correctly positioned and z-indexed, the iframe could apear over the top of the .swf... the .swf in effect being the background... OR the iframe could appear behind the .swf and with a transparent section in the .swf, the iframe would appear through that hole. If there is navigation or links in the iframe, they will be blocked by the .swf though.
    http://www.w3schools.com/cssref/pr_pos_z-index.asp
    But this may be an option....

  • Newbie Q - Absolute position of items / regions

    Hello,
    Is it possible to set an absolute position for items / regions?
    I'd like to be able to display an item at coordinates (x,y) on screen, but all I could find was how to position my items relatively to other items / regions.
    Please help.
    Thanks.
    Anat :o)

    Hi Anat,
    Yes you can absolutely position regions.
    In the Region Header enter in something like:
    &lt;div style="position:absolute; top:100px; left:100px;"&gt;
    and put the following in the Region Footer:
    &lt;/div&gt;
    You will need to experiment with this to see what affect this has on the rest of the page. There is a discussion on this forum about using DIV tags instead of TABLE tags as a means of laying out pages - not sure how far this has got yet, but it would involve rewriting the page templates.

  • Absolute position NXT motor

    Hello,
    Is it possible to send the NXT motor to an absolute position? I want the motor to act as a servo so that i can use it to steer an rc car.

    Hello Frank,
    As I told you, you can easily find the limits by running the motor and checking when the position is not evolving anymore. Once that happens, it means that you have found one limit. Then you can do the same in reverse direction to find the other one.
    Here is a simple example I quickly did to find one limit:

You assume all risks for use of the Code and use of the Code is subject to the Sample Code License Terms which can be found at: http://ni.com/samplecodelicense
    From there, you should be able to find the other limit and compute the center.

  • How do i add a Scroll Bar to a  JList Component using absolute positioning?

    I've got a applet whose content pane is set to null. I've create a jlist component on this applet and using absolute positioning set the bounds at

    My problem is creating add a scroll bar to the list box.
    JScrollPane scrollPane = new JScrollPane(ListBox1);

    The above code is what i use and when i run this applet i don't see the list box at all. How do i add a scrollbar to this list box or JList component. Please help.

    You need to setBounds() on the JScrollPane, not the JList.
    The JScrollPane is the component that is being added to the panel.

  • I want to place an image in my InDesign document that can work with an address like this (\Resources\Thumb) rather than this (C:\Users\JSmith\Desktop\InDesign thumbnail Test\001\Resources\Thumb) is this possible?

    I want to place an image in my InDesign document that can work with an address like this (\Resources\Thumb) rather than this (C:\Users\JSmith\Desktop\InDesign thumbnail Test\001\Resources\Thumb) is this possible? In a nutshell I want to point the link to an image in a directory that uses just part of the address.

    I know this is something you can do in Maya with linked files. I guess InDesign just isn't there yet.
    MW Design -  Yeah I think "Relative paths" is the right term! I want to create a Layout with an image in the center of the page - and then duplicate my folder structure with that file. With that, I want to replace the Linked image file with a diferent image file of the same name. In effect having multiple files of the same layout with different images.  I hope that made sense.

  • Is this possible to access arbitrary frame and to modify the mask?..

    Sorry for a bit messy discussion title. Please, let me explain.
    I have some experience in implementing video processing algorithms, but as our own software and never under AE. Now there is an idea to implement something for AE and first of all, I'm curious, if this is possible at all.
    1) When processing the n-th frame, I need the full access to the data of (n-k)-th and (n+k)-th. Is this possible to do in general case? Or the only variant is to implement frames buffering during the first pass?
    2) Our algorithm uses the mask as one of the inputs. But in contrary to the usual case, mask does not define an area of interest. In any case the full frame is processed, but the processing differs for different regions, depending on mask. In our software, it works like this: user defines a mask (and some parameters). Then effect is slightly modifying (let say – refining) the mask during the render and renders final images. After this user can modify the mask somehow again if he/she is not satisfied with what algorithm has done. Can I produce the same workflow in AE? The only way is using a drawbot (this means CS 5.5 and higher)? And what if I want masks to be raster images?
    The second question in the framework of this one is how to do two video inputs for an effect (first – the video to be processed and second – the mask (grayscale sequence in general case))?
    The possible workflow is that user provides trivial mask – lets say, the black solid. But even during the first pass effect should produce the mask, according to its sight to the video – so, it should somehow substitute the black solid with the sequence on black'n'white images. Is this all possible in AE?
    3) Is this possible (should be, I guess) to implement multipass algorithms? How the preview works then, if I need, for example, to pass all the video length 3-4 times, to produce the final render?
    I can expect that all this is solvable in AE, but may be experienced users could be so kind to give me some basic recommendation on how to do this. Looking through the PDF, which accompanies the SDK has not allowed to come to a distinct answer for the question: is this possible or not. So, I rely on your consultation.

    hi Theofil Mulony, welcome to the forum!
    in short, yes, what you want to do is possible, but some parts may be tricky.
    and now the long version:
    1) When processing the n-th frame, I need the full access to the data of (n-k)-th and (n+k)-th. Is this possible to do in general case? Or the only variant is to implement frames buffering during the first pass?
    you can access the pixel data of any layer at times other than the currently processed time. this concept of getting that data is referred to as "layer checkout" in the AE SDK, and "wide time" is the name of getting pixel data at times other than the current.
    the following thread discusses the difference between two methods of getting such data:
    http://forums.adobe.com/message/4033930#4033930
    you can also look at the "checkout" sample project to see how both concepts are implemented.
Can I produce the same workflow in AE?
    masks in AE generate a matte by default. the user can turn that mask off, so that the shape remains, but the mask does not... mask. (you can also set the mask mode to "none" via API commands).
    you can then read the "off" mask attributes and either render using an API command (see "pathmaster" sample to see how), or write your own algorithm if the API constraints on that operation are a problem for you. (and there are a few constraints on rendering masks in the API)
    now. when you say "modifying the mask" do you mean you modify it's generated matte, or do you mean change it's defining vector?
    both are possible, but completely different.
    if you turned the mask off, and rendered it's alpha yourself, then you can modify that alpha as you wish.
    if you want to use AE's generated matte of the mask and change the mask's outline shape, then you need to look into "streams" and the "mask outline suite".
    the user can modify a mask's shape as he/she pleases, unless you lock that mask or otherwise sabotage the user's operation.
    The only way is using a drawbot (this means CS 5.5 and higher)?
    drawbot is the API for drawing over AE's interface in CS5 and up.
    it's only a drawing tool. previous versions used OS drawing tools. that's all the difference.
    what i think you're asking is weather you need to create the mask drawing/handling capabilities or not.
    the answer is: you can, but you don't have to.
    unless you need control over the mask drawing that AE's existing masks don't have, i would have used AE's masks and not create a brand new mechanism (that the user need to learn as well).
    if you insist at creating a custom UI for drawing masks, the "CCU" sample project would be a good place to start the research.
    (just don't come crying to me when you get a splitting head ache)
    And what if I want masks to be raster images?
    The second question in the framework of this one is how to do two video inputs for an effect (first – the video to be processed and second – the mask (grayscale sequence in general case))?
    The possible workflow is that user provides trivial mask – lets say, the black solid. But even during the first pass effect should produce the mask, according to its sight to the video – so, it should somehow substitute the black solid with the sequence on black'n'white images. Is this all possible in AE?
    by default, "effect" plugins (as opposed to AEGPs) get only one input - the image of the layer, post masks and previous effects (but before transformations).
    you can put as many "layer param"s in your effect and let the user select any number of other layers, which you can the "checkout" and use as second inputs.
    you can also checkout other layers without the user selecting them manually.
    however, checked out layer results are pre-masks and effects. so if the user draws a mask over a black solid, you will not be able to read the "post mask" image unless the user pre-composes the layer with the mask inside the pre-comp. it's a common practice for users to do so, as many effects rely on a second input, and that's the only way to make the input pos-masks and effects. (so it's no biggie from the user's point of view)
    in the same manner, you can read any layer's image and use it as a mask.
    you get the image buffer, so it's up to you to decide whether to use the alpha channel of that image or the rgb (or any other method you see fit).
    3) Is this possible (should be, I guess) to implement multipass algorithms? How the preview works then, if I need, for example, to pass all the video length 3-4 times, to produce the final render?
    AE doesn't do multi pass rendering.
    it actually can render arbitrary frames, in no particular order.
    but as you already saw, you can access the image data from any time - of any time, so you can emulate passes.
    if you need to fly through the whole sequence for every frame, that would of course be very time consuming and wasteful.
    in such a case, you can try to do these passes only once, when effect is implemented, and cache the results.
    look up "sequence data", to see how to manage memory specific to a single instance fo you effect.
    but i must say that if you have to do full length scans of the footage, a couple of times over, and cache EVERYTHING, then you're in a bit of a problem in AE.
    it's just not set up for such rendering logic.
    not impossible, but highly inefficient in the AE rendering pipeline.
    there is a lot more to al of the above, but i hope this gave you a clearer picture of how things are in AE.

  • Using green screen ( but just on isight) is this possible

    Can anybody direct me to a tutorial on exactly how to place a greenscreen background into the isight capture.
    I am using imovie 09 to create a video however i captured the isight footage using screenflow. Now i would like to use the isight footage however wanted to place a nice background image in the frame so it looks more pro than just the background of the recording area. Is this possible.
    I attempted to export from screen flow and import into imovie however it exports the whole enchilada screencast and isight as an exported .mov.

    (1) Position "greenscreen" (something like this: http://tinyurl.com/29w2lp4 )
    (2) Position subject in front of "greenscreen"
    (3) Record with iSight

    Seems simpler to me to follow iMovie Help to record and superimpose directly in iMovie:
