Duplicate accounts listed in System prefs

Ever since I transferred my admin account from my old Mac to the new machine (MPro 2.66) I've had duplicate accounts listed in the Users tab of the System Prefs. I have two legitimate accounts, my main account and another admin account; the main account is listed again 3 times under "Other Accounts", with the same photo and login info as the original account. They do NOT have folders in the Users folder however, so it's not like they're complete duplicates; they only appear in this panel. It's not affecting anything adversely, just wondering if I can delete them without affecting my account since all the name/login info is identical.
Thanks,
JK

Be careful about deleting those duplicates. You might end up deleting your home directory. Make a backup of your machine just in case. If you are wiling to take some risk then proceed.
I played around with this and found that if you have more then one account pointing to the same home directory, then deleting any of the duplicate accounts will not impact the home directory.
However, one of those accounts must be the *Primary Owner* of that home directory and deleting that user will delete the *Home Directory*. Not quite what you want to have happen.
If you try to delete the Primary account you should get a prompt asking you what to do with the *Home Folder*.
Choose *"Do not change the home folder"*
That should preserve it incase you need to get that directory back.
The first think I would do is see if all the duplicates are using the same *Home Folder*
Open up Preferences
Open up Accounts
Ctrl-Click on one of the Duplicate Accounts and select *Advanced Options*.
Record the *Home Directory* for each of the accounts.
If they are the same, then you should be able to delete the duplicates without a problem. Again, if and when prompted, choose *"Do not change the home folder"*.
If the duplicate *Home Folder* point to a different location, then you just have to figure out which is your primary account and delete the duplicates. Again, I'd play it safe and save those home folders until I knew everything was working and there wasn't anything in those folders that I wanted. Once they are gone they are gone.
Good luck!

I have a previously installed app's mobileme sync pref(com.panic.transmit.Favorites) still in my mobileme sync list in system prefs. Any suggestions on how to remove this?

Thanks again for the idea. I just tried it and it didn't work... sort of. iTunes is syncing the photos because I can see that it's optimizing them and syncing them without crashing. Then it says that my iPhone sync is complete and I can safely remove iPhone. But again, when I go into the Camera/Photos app nothing. When I bring up the camera and then touch the the little double square icon on the bottom left the only thing that comes up is a title at the top that says Camera Roll. Then in the middle of the screen is a big icon of a camera and the words No Photos under that. There's no way for me to go to a list of my iPhoto albums. UGH! What's up with this?

  • Editing image collection list in "System Pref Desktop"

Under Apple menu > System Preferences > Desktop & Screen Saver > Desktop, a collection of images are available from the list on the left, however, some of the folders previously created by the "choose Folder" method do not contain any pictures anymore. How do I delete or edit the image collection list on the left?

Ahhhh....sounds like a corrupt preferences file then. Try trashing this preference file, log out and log back in.

  • Apps auto-launch on startup, despite System Prefs and quitting before shutdown.

All apps that were open before shutdown are relaunching themselves upon startup.
This behavior occurs even if I quit each application individually before initiating system shutdown.
This behavior occurs whether I tick or untick the following settings within System Preferences / General:
    • Ask to keep changes when closing documents.
    • Close windows when quitting an application.
This behavior occurs despite none of the apps being listed within System Prefs / Login Items.
Examples of auto-launching apps (behavior occured just now with these): TextEdit, Dictionary, Calendar, Contacts, Safari, Firefox, Excel, Acrobat.

This procedure will unlock all your user files (not system files) and reset their ownership and access-control lists to the default. If you've set special values for those attributes on any of your files, they will be reverted. In that case, either stop here, or be prepared to recreate the settings if necessary. Do so only after verifying that those settings didn't cause the problem. If none of this is meaningful to you, you don't need to worry about it.
I've tested these instructions only with the Safari web browser. If you use another browser, they may not work as described.
    Step 1
If you have more than one user account, and the one in question is not an administrator account, then temporarily promote it to administrator status in the Users & Groups preference pane. To do that, unlock the preference pane using the credentials of an administrator, check the box markedAllow user to administer this computer, then reboot. You can demote the problem account back to standard status when this step has been completed.
Triple-click anywhere in the following line on this page to select it:
    { sudo chflags -R nouchg,nouappnd ~ $TMPDIR.. ; sudo chown -R $UID:staff ~ $_ ; sudo chmod -R u+rwX ~ $_ ; chmod -R -N ~ $_ ; } 2> /dev/null
Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Paste into the Terminal window (command-V). I've tested these instructions only with the Safari web browser. If you use  another browser, you may have to press the return key after pasting.
You'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you don’t have a login password, you’ll need to set one before you can run the command. If you see a message that your username "is not in the sudoers file," then you're not logged in as an administrator.
The command may take a few minutes to run, or perhaps longer if you have literally millions of files in your home folder. Wait for a new line ending in a dollar sign (“$”) to appear, then quit Terminal.
    Step 2 (optional)
Take this step only if you have trouble with Step 1 or if it doesn't solve the problem.
Boot into Recovery. When the OS X Utilities screen appears, select
    Utilities ▹ Terminal
from the menu bar. A Terminal window will open.
In the Terminal window, type this:
    res
Press the tab key. The partial command you typed will automatically be completed to this:
    resetpassword
Press return. A Reset Password window will open. You’re not going to reset a password.
Select your boot volume ("Macintosh HD," unless you gave it a different name) if not already selected.
Select your username from the menu labeled Select the user account if not already selected.
Under Reset Home Directory Permissions and ACLs, click the Reset button.
    Select
     ▹ Restart
    from the menu bar.

  • Why is my Accounts screen blank in System Prefs?

The Accounts pane of my System Preferences is completely blank. There are no admin or user accounts listed at all. There's just nothing there. I don't know how this happened and I need help getting it back to "normal", i.e. being able to see my admin account so I can make changes, etc. My home folder is in the Users directory, which should be the correct place, right? There is no login screen on computer startup, if that helps... the computer goes from booting to the desktop.
Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

This happened on mine and it was caused by an account not getting a legit "realname" in the NetInfo.
To fix it I went to Applications->Utilities->NetInfo Manager, click "users" in the middle pane, then start clicking usernames in the right pane. After clicking the username look on the bottom pane for a "realname" Property. If it doesn't have one you should click on one of the properties in the list, then click "New" at the top to add one called realname, double-click on the default Value that it added to the right and call it whatever you want.

  • Removing an account not listed in System Preferences Accounts?

Somehow I inadvertently created a second account on my iMac that shows as an option at startup. I think I did this with the startup disc somehow. It's not listed in System Preferences>Accounts. How do I get rid of it?

I tried the terminal command first. It returned this line:
    dsebableroot: Command not found.
I then tried the instructions after the link http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1528?viewlocale=en_US
"Click the Finder icon in the Dock.
From the Go menu, choose Utilities.
    Open Directory Utility.
Click the lock in the Directory Utility window.
Enter an administrator account name and password, then click OK.
Choose Disable Root User from the Edit menu."
However in the Edit menu, "Disable Root User" is not an option. "Enable Root User" is.

  • "Moving calendars to server account" and I can not uncheck in system pref /icloud/ calendars -osx 10.8.5

So i have read many discussions and didnt find how can i fix it my problem.
I cant uncheck in system pref /icloud/ calendars , because it is grey.
I have never used icloud for calendar...i think i will loose all of my data if i clean the caches...and i cant access to export command in Calendars...
What happens with you, Apple???? The last two years was THE SHAME!!!! I cant believe how many problems got it, more than 8 years before it...
    Anyone can help me????
    THX!!!!

i had the same issue recently. user melisolaris posted this and solved my problem:
    1. Force quit iCal and Reminders.
    2. On your computer, unlink Calendars and Reminders from iCloud:
    > System Preferences > iCloud > Uncheck Calendars AND Reminders
(I did this because my Reminders uses my Calenders; I set deadlines for reminders, etc. Also, because my reminders weren't syncing with my iCloud as they should.)
    3. It'll ask if you want to delete the calendar and reminder events from your computer. Say yes because you should already have the most up-to-date copy on your iCloud.
    4. Open iCal. It should no longer display the "moving calendars to server account" message.
    5. Add your iCloud account to iCal.
    > Calendar > Add Account... > iCloud > Sign in with Apple ID and PW
    6. Give it a minute to update. You should see all your iCloud calendar events with no error message.
    7. Quit iCal. Open Reminders.
    8. Add your iCloud account to Reminders.
    > Reminders > Add Account... > iCloud > Sign in with Apple ID and PW
    9. Test the two programs by adding test events and reminders to see if they show up on your iPhone and your Macbook.

  • Mavericks System Prefs Internet Accounts

The real new feature now is that I can setup an email account under Systems Prefs but I need to re-edit the entries in Apple Mail anyway. Wow!

    Do a backup.
    Quit Mail.
Go to Finder and select your user/home folder. With that Finder window as the front window, either select Finder/View/Show View options or go command - J.  When the View options opens, check ’Show Library Folder’. That should make your user library folder visible in your user/home folder. Go to Library/Containers/com.apple.mail.  Move the folder com.apple.mail to your desktop. You must move the entire folder, not just the contents.
Restart, re-launch Mail and test. If the problem is solved, recreate any required Mail settings and import any emails you want to save from the folder on the desktop. You can then put the folder in the Trash. If the problem remains, return the folder to where you got it replacing the one that is there.

  • I am trying to delete a user account but attempt locks up system prefs

I have been trying to delete a user account in 10.9.1 (Mavericks) on a 2009 Mac Pro. The problem is that System Prefs never completes the "archive account" and when check which processes are using up CPU time I find that writeprefs is pegged at 100% and has stayed at that level for seven hours plus. Of course the account is never removed and the only way of restarting the machine is to force quit system prefs after which the reboot works. Any ideas? Thanks in advance.

Do you really need to archive the user folder?
linc, that would be desirable but not absolutely essential.  And, thank you for your swift response!

Not waking up from sleep-flashes lighted keyboard and screen, and I cannot unlock the padlocks in the system to change settings, look at keychain, etc.

Still cannot unlock system prefs/users etc.   Also, many applications are returning errors like:  "failed to obtain the necessary authorization"  or " '' failed to obtain permission" so I've attached a portion of my log, showing when I attempt to unlock (or click on the padlock) in system preferences - User Accounts:

  • System Prefs:specifically MobileMe

I usually get help from someone almost immediately at any hour but I posted this in the MobileMe Forum yesterday and have received no response, so perhaps it is System Preferences issue; I'm not sure.
I'm frustrated so I hope I'm in the right Forum this time. I have searched w/in Discussions but so far have not found a similar issue that provides an answer.
I have a MobileMe Family Pack, so two accounts are set up within MobileMe.com as Master and Member. I have gone into System Prefs/MobileMe and checked Sync: Mail, Calendars, Contacts, Bookmarks and Notes w/in each account.
In iTunes, I have unchecked Sync: Mail, Calendars, Contacts, and Bookmarks.
On each iPhone, under Settings, I have set MobileMe Mail, Contacts, Calendars, Bookmarks, Notes, and Find My iPhone as the Default Account.
I have checked all the same Settings on my iPad, and unchecked Sync all those items for the iPad w/in iTunes.
Sometimes things sync to one device but not all. When I go back into System Prefs/MobileMe and look at the Sync settings for either account one account may have sync settings still checked, the on the other account, the prefs are no longer checked. When I check them, it's as if that account had never been synced. It can happen to either account. The major part of that problem seems to be that the checked settings within System Prefs/MobileMe do not remain checked. Each time I log out, that account loses the settings but logging out is the only way to get into the other account.
I have read somewhere on the Forum and thrown out
~/home/Library/Preferences/com.apple.prefs.plist and rebooted, but it again reverted to all unchecked sync prefs.
Is there something I'm missing that will allow each account's Sync Prefs to remain checked? Trying to fix this has become a more time-consuming problem than the old method of just updating various Calendars and Contact lists manually!
    Thanks for any help.

Concur..Mobile me is not worth the trouble. Have advised others to avoid it for now.
I have twice gotten everything truly synchronized only to have MobileMe multiply random contacts, mix email addresses, duplicate calendar entries and so forth.
About July 20 Mobileme was down late at night "for service" and there was a near simultaneous upgrade to iTunes so I thought Apple had finally fixed things..and indeed things worked until today (7/27).
So I have disabled MobileMe synchronizing....will try it again in a month or two.

  • System Prefs. problem. Application problems. Need advice.

    The problems I am having:
    1) Mail will not open. It hangs, shows beach ball and stays that way. All you see is the menu-bar. Force quit will not work. Only hard reset. Activity Monitor shows the app sucking up 87-95% of processor.
    2) System preferences are not staying. Specifically, my mouse preferences for scrolling, keyboard illumination, Safari address bar buttons. This gets worse if I have to do a hard reset if Mail gets launched. It can clean the whole system prefs. sometimes. (update: My 2 finger scrolling goes off even when I haven't shut down, restarted, etc. I have to go into Sys. Prefs. and recheck it)
Let me start from the beginning of the problem:
I was on a website for a real estate company. It uses an active server application that never works right with a Mac. I almost always use Safari for it. What happens is that the sever app. usually hangs and won't go to the next page. I've tried all my browsers except Opera, so, I figure I would give that a go and see if it's better. BAD IDEA! Opera 8.6 hung. It wouldn't force quit. I had to do a hard reset like , 5 times, before it would restart. After that happened is when things got bad. My system prefs. were all gone. I had to reset all that. And then, Mail just went t1t5 up. It did what I said above. Hung. So I had to figure out how I was gonna get all my mail over into Thunderbird. I backed up the HD, and luckily, through Apple forums and Google, came up with the .emlx to .mbox converter. Tedious but worked. I deleted Opera off my HD as well as Mail. I am not even gonna bother with Mail again after having to deal with Apple's stupid file format and having no way to import a back-up. Thunderbird is way better and PGP actually works on it. Scr3w Opera as well.
At this point, my biggest problem I have is that my system prefs don't always seem to stick. I need to find out which files are associated with this and fix it. I am also paranoid that something got backdoored on my system and is causing havoc. Although I doubt this happened, I would like to see if someone can look at my processes and see if anything looks abnormal. All these problems have happened with my standard account with no Admin privileges ( unless I type in the Authorization on a per instance event). My Admin account is not having problems and my other standard account is OK. So I am pretty sure it's a local problem and not associated with root.
Anyone knowledgeable with some good ideas would be appreciated. I almost never have problems. I'm kinda p155ed this happened. Luckily I could still do a back-up and was not in a recording session or anything.
You can download my Processes List in PDF at this address:

Sorry for the long description, but there are a lot of factors that lead up to this.
    Thanks,

    1.67 G4 Pbook , 500 G4 Pbook,Dual 2.7 G5 Tower   Mac OS X (10.4.7)   Also Dell P4 for Gigasampler

I'm having similar problems to those described by ~scot. The apps that won't launch are (so far)
    Mail
    Address Book
    Safari
Safari gives the spinning beach ball, but Mail and Address Book merely show the black triangle indicating they are running (though they are not.)
Force quits are fights. I haven't had to restart but I have to use the force quit menu command or the "three fingered salute" four or 5 times.
Have deleted plist for Safari but hesitated to do so for Mail and Address Books because of fear of losing more than settings - perhaps too cautious but if anyone knows of another way I would prefer that.
Rebooted from original discs and ran Disk First Aid, ran TechTool Pro and Disk Warrior to no effect. Had run Onyx for regular maintenance the week before the problems began but have not done so since.
    Suggestions gratefully welcome!

  • Apple Desktop pictures do not appear in System Prefs

I tried to change my desktop picture and discovered that there are none of the apple images showing in the system prefs for Desktop & Screen Saver. The folders are there (Apple images, nature, plants, etc) but the folders are empty.
Digging via the finder I found in Library/Desktop Pictures all of the missing files but Prefs does not apparently see them.
The default Aurora was there after 10.5.5 upgrade, then I replaced it with one of my own from the user/Pictures folder which shows in the prefs window. All of those pictures still show in prefs.
    What is wrong?

    Derryl S wrote:
Conclusion, there is now something about my account that no longer can see the contents of the Desktop Pictures folder. Why is unknown still.
Usually, a bad preference file or incompatible login item is the culprit, although it could also be corrupted data in a user cache.
For the first, you can try moving likely suspects from ~/Library/Preferences to a desktop temp folder, then logging out & back in or restarting to see if the problem is gone. If not replace the old preference from the temp folder to its original location to restore the old preferences. One general way that may help locate suspect pref files is to change the preference in the normal way while ~/Library/Preferences is sorted by date changed -- the file storing the preferences should be very near the top of the list.
You can also run a terminal command that checks the syntax of most preference files. It won't indicate all problems but it is worth a shot. In Terminal type:
    sudo plutil -s ~/Library/preferences/*.plist
followed by pressing the return key. At the password prompt, enter you admin account password & press return again. It won't be echoed to the screen. If you get nothing besides the prompt for the next command, those prefs are syntactically correct. Otherwise, remove the indicated pref file as above & test.
If desired, repeat this for the main system-wide preference folder with this command:
    sudo plutil -s /Library/preferences/*.plist
Note: since your new account has no problems, it is highly unlikely a system preference is the problem.
For login items, check the list in the accounts system preference. Suspect anything that isn't from Apple. You can list them here in a new post if you have any questions about them.
If the problem is a bad user cache, a third party utility like Onyx or Leopard Cache Cleaner will allow you to "clean" (delete) them. Try this as a last resort, since caches speed up the operation of your Mac & will need to be rebuild by the system, causing one-time delays until this is done.

  • Desktop Wallpaper folders disappearing/reappearing in System Prefs

I recently upgraded to a 15 Inch MBP with Retina Display and I have a problem with desktop wallpapers.  I migrated everything across from my old mac and when I go into System Prefs > Desktop & Screen Saver there is a list of all the folders I've added with all my wallpapers in.  I've deleted these out because the wallpapers are no longer suitable for the new display.  I've then added in a couple of new folders with retina wallpapers in and everything is fine.  The problem occurs when I quit System Prefs and go back into it, all my old folders have reappeared and all my new folders have disappeared.  Due to this problem sometimes when I boot up my MBP the wallpaper has changed to something random.
I'm getting a bit fed up with removing and adding the folders back in now, is there any reason why it might be doing this or is there a solution?

I purchased a Macbook Pro (2012, non-retina) and I have the same issue.
I went to the Genius Bar, and we went through the same steps I took before (deleting plist files, repairing permissions). The issue is system-wide; My admi account, Guests, new Users all experience it.
We could not solve the issue. The Genius' best answer was that this generation might have a bug in its particular build of 10.7.4. I ultimately had a choice of waiting for Apple to discover the bug, or live with it.
I'm about to attempt a reinstall of Lion. I doubt it will help with anything, since I can't download a fresh copy from the App Store (apparently having 10.7.4 preinstalled means I can never have access to a fresh copy).
I'm concerned, as I have no idea if this sort of issue is contained only to this preference, or if it can end up screwing with me later on, say in the middle of an iPad app I'm developing.
The only work-around I can suggest: Don't close System Preferences for the entire time the Mac is on. If you log out or reboot, you'll have to set up your folders again, but if you never close System Preferences, they will remain.
