Duplicate Applications?

I know this has been addressed but I'm hoping to finally get this straight in my head: I seem to have two sets of my applications. One set is in my Home in an applications folder and the other set is in Applications (in the "Places"). I suspect this happened when I did a re-install /archive of Leopard. When I do a "Spotlight" search, Spotlight shows me two of whatever application I'm searching for. Is it safe to get rid of the applications folder in my Home location? Thanks in advance~ Karen

There are normally two separate Applications folders on your Mac. The primary folder is located Mac HD/Applications and contains all of the original apps that came with your Mac, plus any which you may have installed yourself over time. This folder is available to all user accounts that you create on your Mac, with any restrictions which you may apply when you create the accounts. The second is Mac HD/Users/~user/Applications. This folder of apps is only available to the user in whose account it appears.
If you find the apps from Mac HD/Users/~user/Applications is a duplicate of everything in Mac HD/Applications, then I would select all of the duplicate apps in Mac HD/Users/~user/Applications, drag & drop them in the Trash and empty the Trash. Leave the actual Applications folder in your user account, it belongs there.
This should free up many gigs of HD space for you.

  • How do I remove duplicate applications after installing Tiger 10.7.2?

After installing Lion 10.7.2 I have ten duplicate applications, all are applications that are generally included in MAC software (ie DVD playe, iChat, iTunes, Mail, etc.). How do I remove the duplicates? I tried deleting one from the folder where I generally kept it, then replaced it with the newer version that loaded with 10.7.2. However, that created a duplicate again.

    Hi,
I can (somewhat) speak for iChat.
iChat should always be kept in the  Applications folder - so much so that it should not be put in any sub folder (I have heard of people putting it in an IM apps folder or lumping all Apple Apps in one folder).
This unfortunately causes problems in Updating (iChat gets updated from time to time in OS Updates) and in Upgrades (Such as moving to Lion) as the Apps are not "in the right place".
    Does this help ?

  • Why the duplicate Applications folders and which one(s) can I trash?

I've tried to disregard the duplicate Applications folders on my HD and double Mail programs in my dock but would like to trash any I don't need (I'm the only user of my machine). I see that there's an Applications folder in my HD icon (under "Devices"); an Applications folder in my Finder window (under "Places"), and an Applications folder accessible by clicking on my name in the Finder window (also under "Places"). Although it appears there are 3 Applications folders / Mail programs, a search in Finder suggests there are actually 2: one is traceable to HD (hard disk); the other is traceable to my name. Which of these is "safe" to trash? (I don't understand why my Finder must contain two Applications folders--frequently resulting in the appearance of duplicate Mail programs in my dock. Any clarification/suggestions appreciated. Cap

Thanks. That helps me with the concept, and I see that there can only be one "real" Applications folder which is under Devices and labeled Macintosh HD. Perhaps what I'm trying to say is that the below that, in the Places area, the programs in the "Applications" of my "Home Folder" (the little house followed by my name) don't agree with the programs in the "Applications" folder right underneath it. The latter Applications Folder agrees with the one on my Hard Drive, it has the new iTunes program, etc. whereas the programs in the Applications Folder of my Home Folder are different (the old iTunes program, etc.). I guess I'm saying that the Applications Folders of my Hard Drive and of my Home Folder are at odds. I'm simply going to try following your idea--drag the Applications Folder from my Home Folder onto the desktop, replace it with the Applications Folder from my Hard Drive, then go through the eternity of trashing the old Home Folder Applications Folder
that will by now be copied on my Desktop. (Wish I new of a faster way of trashing the many programs.) I'll let you know if it works. Thanks again, Cap

  • Duplicate application icons when I right click "open with" ??

When I right click on an file and use "open with" command I get duplicate application icons in my finder window. Anyone know why? Solution?
    Thanks Ed

Open the Terminal application in your Utilities folder and paste the following command in its entirety immediately after the Terminal prompt:
/System/Library/Frameworks/ApplicationServices.framework/Versions/A/Frameworks/L aunchServices.framework/Versions/Current/Support/lsregister -kill -r -domain system -domain local -domain user
Now press RETURN. Your finished when the prompt returns.
Duplicates may still appear if you have different versions of the same program installed and if you have the software installed on multiple drives.

  • Duplicate Applications- PowerPC versions?

After installing 10.4.8 I noticed some duplicate applications. It seems I get two versions of some Apple programs: the regular application and one that reads: Application-Power PC.
This happens with Google Earth, iDVD 6, iMovie HD, iPhoto, iTunes etc.
What gives? Since my G4 is a PowerPC, can I trash the regular application and just keep the PowerPC version?
What's the best way to trash these regular applications and leave the PowerPC version?
    Thanks, Panther

I bought Tiger OS 10.4.6 off the shelf at an Apple Store. Software Automatic updater told me to update to 10.4.8. I did and now I have two versions of some of the apps.
Can I throw the non-PowerPC versions in the trash?
    Thanks

  • How to duplicate applications with assigned users?

    Hi guys,

How can I realize this ?

ZFS:TED can do this for you. It can even do the associations to groups or
containers. The only parameters it will change, would be the source path.
So if you created the golden app in London and are distributing the app to
New York, the apps source both would be changed to point to the New York
server. TED is a very powerfull product and all the customers I have
    installed it for, love it.

  • Duplicate applications on my iMac after Snow Leopard upgrade

    Hi everyone,
At some point after updating to Snow Leopard, I realized I have duplicates of all my applications in my application folder! I normally launch my applications with Quicksilver, so I never noticed before. But a couple of days ago I opened the applications folder and saw that each application is listed twice: one is the normal icon and name, while the second is the normal icon with the name followed by '(original)'. Both are the same size and will launch the application.
For many of the Mac applications (like iTunes, iPhoto, Mail, etc.) one is listed as an icon, and the other is listed as a folder. If you open the folder, there is another folder labeled 'Contents' with a lot of info inside.
I tried to move all the applications NOT labeled as (original) to the trash to see what happened, but about half of the applications could not launch properly. So I moved them back to the application folder and decided to seek out some advice.
Anyway, I don't know what I should do. Any ideas?

did you perhaps do a Time Machine restore of some sort recently? there is a bug in snow leopard TM that when you restore an application and choose an option to keep the original the restored application looses its bundle bit. then you'd see what you are seeing. did you do that? hold off on thrashing anything. if this is what happened the restored apps will have no bundle bits and will not work properly.

  • RDS 2012 Two RD SH collections : duplicate applications

Hi, I have deployed   Two RD CB servers  in HE mode   and  two RD Web servers in HE mode through NLB.
I have deployed four  RD SH servers. Two of them are deployed on same servers as  where RD CB and  RD WEB is deployed.
Because I have specific application that will run only on two RD SH servers,  I was forced to  split servers in two collections.
Now because i have some common application  that are hosted on both servers,  I have to published  remote app programs in both  RS SH Collections.
Problem is, that  when you log in to  RD WEB portal, I get duplicate icons. One to connect to one collection and one to connect to  other collections.
Is there a way to merge  those common application, so that  users do not see twice same application.  In citrix, that was fine, because you could say application is published  in those  servers, her  in MS
RDS ins  all around, you publish application on RDSH collection…

    Hi,
Thank you for posting in Windows Server Forum.
After going through your description, here I can suggest some basic steps. For not allowing same RemoteApp to appear twice from different RDSH server on RD Web we can restrict RemoteApp to specific user whether he can see\access the RemoteApp or not.
For this you can create group if multiple users (if single user then directly select user), after that in specific RemoteApp properties we can assign which user can see\access that app. So in this way you can maintain the RemoteApp for users so that they can’t
see double RemoteApp. You can get more information below.

  • Duplicate application folders

When opening Apps folder, I find a duplicate of Apps and an Apps 2 folder. When I look in finder I find an endless string. Is there a reason for the duplication of folders? Id do a file search for an app name and only find 1 instance of it. Confused
    2011 MBP, OSX, single user

Note that all the extra Applications folders are "aliases" (aka "shortcuts"), as signified by the little arrow on the icon.  How this happened, I cannot say.  But if this happened to me I would be comfortable deleting the aliases - the ones with the arrows - at the highest level of your real Applications folder.  That should take care of things.

  • Why does moving application in Finder create duplicate application?

More importantly, how can I stop this "feature?"
I like to organize my apps. I would put those related to word processing in a "text" folder; those related to still or video images in an "images" folder, audio files in "sounds."
But I've noticed that, in Mountain Lion, if/when I drag an app to one of these folders, it leaves the original where it was and creates a duplicate in the folder.
    Any way to stop this?

Problems you will experience moving apps from Applications or Utilities.
Any App installed by an installer, will either not update when updates are available or you will get a duplicate back in Applications or Utilities after running the update utility.
This can cause problems because you may continue to run the older duplication and either not get new functionality (or bug fixes) that you expect to see.  Very frustrating.
Things may go along fine, until the next Mac OS X upgrade, then the old version of the app may start crashing because of changes to Mac OS X that the app depended upon have changed.
Another problem.  There are apps that will use other apps, for example Mail may access Contacts, or there are apps that access System Preferences, etc...   All of these interconnections wil fail if the dependent app cannot be found in its expected location.
You are not the only one that can be anal about where things belong.
The above examples are based on seeing users have these problems, many of which do not appear until months later, long after forgetting you moved things around and did not discover a duplicate was unintentionally created.
If you dragged an app to Applications or Utilities, then you are free to move that around to your hearts content.  HOWEVER, if an installer placed the app in Applications or Utilities, it is best to leave it alone.
The use of Aliases which you can place anywhere you like, rename the alias as you please, even have multiple aliaes for the same app in different locations is a much more flexible and safer approach to organizing your apps.
It's my da*ned computer and I want to be able to do with it as I please. If I delete key files and folders, well then I have no one to blame but me.
Years ago, had the great good fortune to have to work in a UNIX environment. I learned what computing without a net is all about. . . .
Well then don't let us stand in your way .  Fire up Applications -> Utilities -> Terminal, and you are in a Unix world.  Use the 'sudo' command (see "man sudo") to get elavated privileges and have at it.
Although I suggest you have a full backup and save it away before you start using that 'sudo' command.

  • Duplicate muscis with ! and duplicate applications

    Hi there,
I just reformatted my hard drive and when I downloaded and installed iTunes, I now have a complete duplicate of my music library except one set has an ! in front of each tune and my iphone applications are also in duplicate.
    1. Re: the music: I guess I could just delete one copy of each but what does the ! in front of the tune mean? Is that the one to delete or the one without the !?
    2. The apps all the look the same. Is it safe to just delete one of them or is one somehow different as far as iTunes is concerned?
    Thanks much in advance!
    Helene

    1. Re: the music: I guess I could just delete one copy of each but what does the ! in front of the tune mean? Is that the one to delete or the one without the !?
the exclamation mark means that iTunes cannot find the specified file
    2. The apps all the look the same. Is it safe to just delete one of them or is one somehow different as far as iTunes is concerned?
The App's would have the same issue as the music it just that iTunes doesn't display a warning about it
In regards to fixing the issue just go through the top menu's of iTunes and choose consolidate library, and delete duplicates. that should fix it

  • Duplicate applications after using Migration Assistant

I'm posting this because I haven't seen this topic addressed yet regarding using Migration Assistant for transferring data from old G5 to new Mac Pro.
I used the Migration Assistant, which took hours to transfer data and stopped the first time due to a power backup overload. The second time I ran it, everything had transferred successfully, and I've been using my Mac Pro for almost two weeks now, with slight glitches that have been easily solved.
Here's my situation: In my Applications folder, there are a number of applications that have "(from old Mac)" as a suffix. Specifically, all of my Adobe Creative Suite applications have duplicates, as does Cocktail Extras, Corel Painter IX, DiskTracker (Mac OS X), Extensis Suitcase X1, Fetch 4.0.2, Finale 20045 and 2005b, and FontDoctor X for Macintosh.
Needless to say, I would like to recover the additional disk space that these duplicates are occupying, but is it okay to simply trash the ones that say "(from old Mac)", as I backed up my old G5 right before runnning the Migration Assistant, and I still have it sitting here, just in case something bad happens while I'm in the middle of a project? Or, should I trash the new ones? The Creative Suite apps have been activated on the Mac Pro, so I'm assuming that the "old Mac" ones could be deleted.
Anyone having any experience with this? I don't want to reinstall a lot of things unless I have to, as I will be upgrading a lot of the apps as soon as Intel-native versions are released, and things are working well so far.
Thanks for any advice you can give me.
    2 x 3 GHz Dual-Core Intel Xeon   Mac OS X (10.4.8)   8 GB RAM
    1.8 Mhz G5   Mac OS X (10.4.2)

Yes, it's OK to trash them. You have transferred items that are from a PPC Mac to an Intel Mac that apparently had Intel versions of the same software already installed. You definitely do not want PPC versions (this does not apply to most Adobe software which is PPC-only.)
Unfortunately, Migration Assistant doesn't always know when not to transfer PPC software to an Intel Mac. This is especially a problem for the /Home/Library/ and /Library/ folders because MA may overwrite Intel components with PPC components. This can cause the Intel Mac to run slowly or not at all.
A Basic Guide for Migrating to Intel-Macs
If you are migrating a PowerPC system (G3, G4, or G5) to an Intel-Mac be careful what you migrate. Keep in mind that some items that may get transferred will not work on Intel machines and may end up causing your computer's operating system to malfunction.
Rosetta supports "software that runs on the PowerPC G3 or G4 processor that are built for Mac OS X". This excludes the items that are not universal binaries or simply will not work in Rosetta:
Classic Environment, and subsequently any Mac OS 9 or earlier applications
    Screensavers written for the PowerPC
    System Preference add-ons
    All Unsanity Haxies
    Browser and other plug-ins
    Contextual Menu Items
Applications which specifically require the PowerPC G5
    Kernel extensions
Java applications with JNI (PowerPC) libraries
See also What Can Be Translated by Rosetta.
In addition to the above you could also have problems with migrated cache files and/or cache files containing code that is incompatible.
If you migrate a user folder that contains any of these items, you may find that your Intel-Mac is malfunctioning. It would be wise to take care when migrating your systems from a PowerPC platform to an Intel-Mac platform to assure that you do not migrate these incompatible items.
If you have problems with applications not working, then completely uninstall said application and reinstall it from scratch. Take great care with Java applications and Java-based Peer-to-Peer applications. Many Java apps will not work on Intel-Macs as they are currently compiled. As of this time Limewire, Cabos, and Acquisition are available as universal binaries. Do not install browser plug-ins such as Flash or Shockwave from downloaded installers unless they are universal binaries. The version of OS X installed on your Intel-Mac comes with special compatible versions of Flash and Shockwave plug-ins for use with your browser.
The same problem will exist for any hardware drivers such as mouse software unless the drivers have been compiled as universal binaries. For third-party mice the current choices are USB Overdrive or SteerMouse. Contact the developer or manufacturer of your third-party mouse software to find out when a universal binary version will be available.
Also be careful with some backup utilities and third-party disk repair utilities. Disk Warrior (does not work), TechTool Pro (pre-4.5.1 versions do not work), SuperDuper (newest release works), and Drive Genius (untested) may not work properly on Intel-Macs. The same caution may apply to the many "maintenance" utilities that have not yet been converted to universal binaries.
Before migrating or installing software on your Intel-Mac check MacFixit's Rosetta Compatibility Index.
Additional links that will be helpful to new Intel-Mac users:
    Intel In Macs

MacInTouch List of Compatible Universal Binaries

Because Migration Assistant isn't the ideal way to migrate from PowerPC to Intel Macs, using Target Disk Mode or copying the critical contents to CD and DVD or an external hard drive will work better when moving from PowerPC to Intel Macs.
Basically the instructions you should follow are:
    1. Backup your data first. This is vitally important in case you make a mistake or there's some other problem.
    2. Connect a Firewire cable between your old Mac and your new Intel Mac.
    3. Startup your old Mac in Target Disk Mode.
    4. Startup your new Mac for the first time, go through the setup and registration screens, but do NOT migrate data over. Get to your desktop on the new Mac without migrating any new data over.
    4. Copy the following items from your old Mac to the new Mac:
In your /Home/ folder: Documents, Movies, Music, Pictures, and Sites folders.
    In your /Home/Library/ folder:
/Home/Library/Application Support/AddressBook (copy the whole folder)
/Home/Library/Application Support/iCal (copy the whole folder)
Also in /Home/Library/Application Support (copy whatever else you need including folders for any third-party applications)
    /Home/Library/Keychains (copy the whole folder)
    /Home/Library/Mail (copy the whole folder)
/Home/Library/Preferences/com.apple.mail.plist (* This is a very important file which contains all email account settings and general mail preferences.)
/Home/Library/Preferences/ copy any preferences needed for third-party applications
/Home /Library/iTunes (copy the whole folder)
/Home /Library/Safari (copy the whole folder)
    If you want cookies:
    /Home/Library/Cookies/Cookies.plist
    /Home/Library/Application Support/WebFoundation/HTTPCookies.plist
    For Entourage users:
Entourage is in /Home/Documents/Microsoft User Data
    Also in /Home/Library/Preferences/Microsoft
Credit goes to another forum user for this information.
If you need to transfer data for other applications please ask the vendor or ask in the Discussions where specific applications store their data.
    5. Once you have transferred what you need restart the new Mac and test to make sure the contents are there for each of the applications.
Written by Kappy with additional contributions from a brody.
Unfortunately, if you find problems with your new computer it may be due to problems that arise when migrating from a PPC Mac to an Intel Mac using Migration Assistant. If this be the case your only recourse is to reinstall OS X. You should also reinstall your third-party software (or update it) to be sure you are using universal binary versions (if available.)

  • Duplicate applications list

I recently got a new iMac. I transferred everything from my old iMac via ethernet during the startup process.
Now, when I tried to email a link, using the "Share" function in Safari, it opens a second Mail on the dock. When I checked that Mail with "show in finder," it showed that I have a folder in Applications called "copy to Applications," which contains a duplicate list of my applications.
But if I select iMessage from the share list, it goes to the regular iMessage in the regular Applications folder.
In both iMessage and Twitter, if I click on a link, and I already have Safari open, the link opens in that Safari (from the Applications folder). But, if Safari is not open, they will open a second Safari on the dock from the "copy to Applications" folder.
I found on my old iMac (the one I transferred from), there is also a "copy to Applications" folder in Applications, but it is an alias, pointing to the actual Applications folder. Not an alias in the new iMac.
I tried putting the "copy to…." in the trash, but then those links result in a "can't find…" warning (or something like that). So I put it back.
What to do to stop things from looking for this "copy to…" folder?
    Thanks.

Hi, I think you need to trash that copy to folder, then rebuild the Launch db...
Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions...
    Reset Launch Services...
    http://www.thexlab.com/faqs/resetlaunchservices.html#Anchor-Reset-47857
    Reboot.
PS. Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive.

  • Duplicate applications on MBP

Hopefully someone else has solved this problem...I can't find mention anywhere.
My boss has a MBP 2.33 running 10.4.11. His applications folder has duplicates of nearly every application. For instance, it'll have the following...
    Image Capture
    Image Capture-Intel
    iMovie HD
    iMovie HD-Intel
    Internet Connect
    Internet Connect-Intel
    iPhoto
    iPhoto-Intel
    iSync
    iSync-Intel
And this is just a portion of the list. Can we safely delete one of the applications? I assume we keep the "Intel" ones. All version numbers are the same.
    Thanks in advance...

Do a 'Get-Info' (command-I) on each pair and see what the difference is. Are they both the same version? Are they both Universal? If so you you can trash either one. But make sure one is not an alias. If so trash the alias. The question is how'd they get there and who renamed them with "-Intel"?
