Duplicate apps and Appstore downloading previously installed a

Hi,
I have just got a Macbook Air 11.5inch screen, but i'm having some app and download problems.
Basically when i set it up the macbook had the old version of OS X (which i didn't realise) and a load of other apps to download including numbers, imovie, etc. i decided to update the apps first, not realising the operating system was probably better to do first, followed by latest version of the apps. When i clicked 'update' the app told me that the latest version wasn't compatible with my OS X version but i clicked 'download latest compatible version. I then updated to OS X Yosemite, and all the Apps wanted to re-update which i then redid.
However now my app store keeps telling me i have new updates for apps that are already the right version (i.e. imovie has been downloaded but the App Store is telling me an update is available). Also in my applications in finder I have two versions of all these applications.
When i click on 'info' for the app, i can see that one icon is actually an application with a version, but the other is an 'App store download'.
Basically my question is: can i delete these duplicated applications, the app store download version (which does not open anything when clicked on) if so will this have and effect on my computer, and will it stop the Appstore endlessly updating applications with the latest versions that i have already downloaded?
Maybe the duplicated apps is normal, i have no idea as i have never had a mac before but i'm worried about doing something that i shouldn't.
Thanks for your help.

For information to all:  I have solved the problem by putting all the apps concerned in the trash, turning off and on again and then reinstalling all the apps.  I then emptied the trash, since then no more problems.
Thanks in spite of no one knowing the answer!
