Duplicate arch-announce Mailings?

Is there an issue with the maillist re-sending previous articles?
I seem to have recieved duplicates over the weekend of every article I've received since I joined?
Here's my GMail... You can see they were all received on the 21st Dec
Last edited by fukawi2 (2008-12-21 22:03:42)

Yeah got em too yesterday. But didnt want to send yet another email asking about stuff like that cause phrakture is the only one who seems to care and i didnt want to waste his valuable time.
The particular ML sent duplicate emails before what happened yesterday. I guess someone tried to fix it and this happened.

  • Duplicate Arch system?

I have been looking around and think I have an idea how to do this, but I want to make sure before I take the plunge.
I am trying to have one partition that contains "/" (sda1) that I will use every day, like a normal install.  But, I also want to create a root system on another partition (sda2) that I mirror off of the live partition to create a system backup at specific intervals.  I would like to be able to boot to both of them, in case something happens  to either one, and have them share the /home folder (sda3).
I would probably just do cp or tarball to copy the system partition.  Is this possible, and how do I set up the backup partition to be able to boot and have no conflicts?
    Thanks.

seems strange to clone your normal install, wouldnt it just be easier to setup a cron job that would create a backup at a specific interval? the way it sounds, you would have to re-install arch on the separate /root partition and then manually upgrade it when you know that updates are stable. asaik you can't just cp a system to another partition and make it work.
i would suggest reading up on the cron job setup as it seems like an easier and less "work-intense" method.
Huh?  I'm pretty sure you can just cp a / if you exclude /proc , etc.  However, this is what people use rsync and incremental backups for.  Honestly, I don't backup my / , just ~ because all the unique stuff is in my home.

  • [SOLVED] dvipng unable to find required binary in libgd

Hello- I'm not sure whether I should make this post in the main Arch Linux forums or in AUR for dvipng,
but I will try here first.
I have used dvipng without any problems for over six months, but yesterday I got the following error:
dvipng: error while loading shared libraries: libgd.so.2: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory
I know I have libgd installed on my system. sudo pacman -Ql gd returns:
    gd /usr/lib/libgd.so
    gd /usr/lib/libgd.so.3
    gd /usr/lib/libgd.so.3.0.0
    but no libgd.so.2
I tried creating a symlink for libgd.so.2 that points to libgd.so.3 but this results in the following:
This is dvipng 1.14 Copyright 2002-2010 Jan-Ake Larsson
tmp.dvi: No such file or directory
Has anyone else had similar issues with dvipng? Is this related to the recent texlive upgrade in Arch?
    Last edited by gojun077 (2013-08-23 04:30:59)

The package texlive-bin from extra also contains a dvipng binary, which works fine for me.
So you don't actually have to install anything from AUR.
    Edit:
I just tried out the dvipng package from AUR. It builds against libgd.so.3, and the resulting executable runs just fine. (Although the package installs everything in /usr/local which is bad form and should be fixed.).
Maybe in your case the symlink for libgd.so.2 that you created earlier (which is usually a bad idea btw) messes up the compilation? Remove it, make sure your system is completely up-to-date (`pacman -Syu`), and then try building the AUR package again.
    Edit 2:
I actually followed you here from the mnemosyne-proj-devel mailing list (which I watch occasionally because I maintain the AUR package for Mnemosyne), and I just realized that your problem is probably with latex, not dvipng.
Mnemosyne first calls the latex executable to create a file called tmp.dvi from a Latex source snippet, and then calls dvipng to further convert that file to png. If dvipng says "No such file or directory", it means latex failed to create it.
If you are using the TexLive latex distribution (packages texlive-bin + texlive-core from extra), then I can also guess the reason why: A package upgrade last month broke it in a way that requires manual intervention to fix - there was an archlinux.org news item about this with instructions how to fix it (merge .pacnew files, then call fmtutil-sys --all).
    General tips for the future:
Always make sure you merge any .pacnew files after doing a package upgrade with pacman.
Subscribe to the Arch Linux news - either using the RSS feed found on the archlinux.org homepage, or using the arch-announce mailing list. It only has a few news items each year, but those it does have tend to be important for Arch Linux users.
When a program that you installed using an AUR package stops working, the best place to get answers is usually the corresponding AUR page (e.g. here for Mnemosyne). Of course, if you get no response there, this forum is the next place to try.

  • News module and mobile support

Hi. I've not been able to find a solution here or by Googling this, I hope somebody can help me here.
I'm creating separate phone and tablet versions of a site and am using BC's mobile support automatic redirection. All 3 versions of the site will be using the same news module content (I hope so anyway, this is what I want to happen). The trouble is when  a news item is open from the tablet news page it loads in the Announcement templated page which has the desktop version navigation as part of the template (as you'd expect it to). Unless the user uses the "go back" link, they will be directed into the desktop pages which is obviously not what I want. Is there a way of  keeping the user in the tablet/phone pages having dealt with the news item?
    Grant

I'm pretty sure you're not right there. The BC Support page you pointed me
to does imply that you have to make a choice between which method to use
and my testing is showing that to be the case; I can't have both turned on.
    Here's what they say,
To use either the responsive templates or the mobile website features,
first enable mobile and tablet support.
       1. Select Site Settings > Mobile Support.
       2. Do one of the following:
          - To enable stand alone mobile websites, specify a Phone and Tablet
content folder. For details, see Set up stand-alone mobile
    websites<http://helpx.adobe.com/business-catalyst/partner/creating-mobile-tablet-friendly-templates .html#id_23954>
          - To enable responsive page templates, click Enable next to Mobile
          Templates.
       3. Click Save
But you are right, there is only one Detail Layout; media queries on the css file will help out a bit there.
The only way around this as I see it is to go the route of separate mobile site and create the duplicate news Announcement content with it's own
news template layout (I have to any way as the site was created in Muse = no templates unless I strip out all the header/footer info and create
templates = one of the many reasons people are not crazy about Muse yet - including myself ).
BC development people, if you read this it would be awesome to have the device specific template option ( as you have in the Templates section )
also available in the News Module for when assigning the new news item a Template for the announcement detail page. That would be the perfect
    solution, I think.

  • Changelog.txt

    Hello.
I'am new to arch community. I would like to watch the dev iterations as i do for slackware with ftp://ftp.slackware.com/pub/slackware/s … ngeLog.txt.
Is there any equivalent for arch please ?
    Thank you.

If you just want to track package changes, there is an rss feed on the front page.
If you want to track "what is happening", there is a Status Report that gets sent to arch-announce.

    Tests run: no

    Modified Paths:

On reflection, it seems much easier/safer to do something like this instead...
When running in Arch, but viewing a partition with another installation's data on it, do directory listings like this:
    ls -l | FILTER
where FILTER is a script that pulls out the Arch-announced users and groups, converts them to numeric if necessary (according to Arch's understanding), and then stuffs back in what the other installation thinks are the symbols corresponding to those numbers. This was easy enough to do, and doesn't risk breaking anything.
Marking as SOLVED, but I'd still welcome feedback about the different ways different distributions understand the groups I cited. It's very hard to track this info down.

  • [Solved] Update notifications

Sorry for such a noob question, but I signed up for the arch-announce mailing lists, from what I understood I would receive email notifications about new updates? I've not received a single mail (I did receive the welcome to arch-announce mail).
Yesterday I updated to the new kernel, systemd and few others after making a backup, but I couldn't find any info about these updates. I looked around, checked the homepage and the forums but there was no info to be found.
Where do I read up about these (and future) updates?
    Thanks.
Last edited by mouseman (2014-04-11 18:27:48)

honestly I wasn't sure what I was looking for, nor what to expect. I suppose I expected something because I thought it was big and important and it was my update on Arch . I wanted to be a good boy make sure I was informed as per the update info here on the noob board.
Hats off though, it updated without a hitch .
So, basically, if there are no announcements and there's no info on the homepage or here on the board, there should generally be no problem updating important things like kernels and systemd?

  • Announcing some new Arch Linux Schwag offerings

    Hey All,
I wanted to introduce you to some new Arch Linux Schwag offerings I've been cooking up over the past little while.
I'm currently sold out of case badges, and Simo has faithfully shipped his last order.  I'm trying to think of a way to compensate him, he's done so much work for me on the shipping front and all I ever offered him was dinner, (granted, he's a starving student, and dinner was hopefully much appreciated).  When I reorder stickers, probably in the new year, I will be shipping them myself, from Canada, so domestic prices will be a touch higher.
    Now, onwards to Schwag:
It's no secret that I'm the odd man out on the tacos vs poutine debate.  I know you all will come around to my way of thinking eventually, but in the meantime, check out the new schwag where you can proudly pick your piece.  I've also added a few other new t-shirt design, mostly as your suggestions.  Check out the new products line at zazzle to place your order:
    http://www.zazzle.com/archlinux/gifts?c … 1284817680
I think most of you know about the laptop bags, jewellery, and case badges (currently out of stock) selling at: http://schwag.archlinux.ca/
I've added a few handmade items of my own invention to the mix, including wooden and soapstone sculptures, keychains, and coasters, all featuring our favourite distro's logo:
    http://schwag.archlinux.ca/product/coaster/
    http://schwag.archlinux.ca/product/soapstone_sculpture/
    http://schwag.archlinux.ca/product/sculpture/
    http://schwag.archlinux.ca/product/keychain/
I'm particularly proud of the soapstone sculptures, they look incredible.  I'm not sure I can give them up.  The keychains will also make great stocking stuffers this Christmas season, so remind your friends to shop Arch Schwag!
In addition, I would like to announce a preview of the Arch Linux Handbook.  This should be retailing in a couple weeks, and will be available from both CreateSpace and Amazon.com.  The handbook is basically a quick restyling of the epic beginner's guide in the wiki.  You can preview it here:
    https://www.createspace.com/3398103
    That's all for now!

Runiq wrote:Cool stuff. Like the coasters, and the allanbrokeit shirt is stylish.
    That's Acecero's contribution, as he implies. :-)
Also, there's a typo in the handbook's headline: "A simple lightweight Linuk handbook."
Yeah, I know... sadly, I didn't notice it until it was too late to change (the book was set up for publication).  Now I have to wait for a new edition, or pay $40 to put one out now.
Acecero wrote:Just curious, are you going to release different editions of the Arch Linux Handbook from time to time? I'm assuming the information would need to be updated and the more marketability you will gain anyway.
I'm hoping to sell between 10 and 50 copies of this edition to pay for the upfront costs before making a new edition.  The more popular it is, the more likely I will be to keep it up to date.
BTW, if anyone is interested in doing cover art for the second edition, get in touch with me.  I've been told that this cover looks like ass (it was gently, with links to tutorials on design :-D)

  • Can Arch News items become Announcements automatically?

If you take even the briefest glance around here today, it seems clear that not everyone who uses the forum reads Arch News. I'm wondering would it be possible for new Arch News articles to automatically trigger a new Announcement thread here?
This is an idea, btw, not a request, and I'm as guilty as anyone else of not reading the news as often as I should. If it dies here, so be it.

I do not read the frontpage of ArchLinux often and I may skip reading the forum sometimes too for a period. So I added my email to the mailinglist, pressented along with the news, but then I got tons of mail, so I had du unregister.
    So I wish for a news-mailing-list.
It should be possible using arch, without hanging out on the forum all the time.
Oh, one more (better)idea, I'm creative today
 If no mailinglist is made, maybe pacman could pressent all new news since last time you used it? Then people cant miss impotent messages!

  • Arch Linux Turkish Community Announcement

    Hey All,
We, as the Turkish users of Arch Linux, have created our own community to support, to translate, to develop our very beloved Linux distro on all platforms. As our first gift to the community, we have translated pacman completely to Turkish. It's also being tested by our community right now.
We set http://www.archlinuxtr.org as our web site (it's currently under development) and have SVN, Trac projects (still being configured). We also have #archlinux.tr on irc.freenode.net
We look forward to see anyone commenting, helping, cheering, donating and of course contributing our work.
    Cheers..!

Yeah, that's mine! (which runs Leopard for now but has several virtual Arch's on it..) I'm working on installing Arch on it.. (is a 3-4 years Arch user by now btw..)

  • Duplicate Mailings From iPhoto to Mail

In using iPhoto to mail photos, periodically Mail will send two or three copies of the mailing with the photos. To stop this today I had to take the account offline. Anyone have any ideas that can help me solve this? It doesn't happen every time. Thanks.

    Ken:
Welcome to the Apple Discussions. Not sure. Haven't heard of that before. It might be more of a Mail problem. Do post the problem in the Mail forum also.

Is there anyway you can try to get more images/videos for the Battlefield Hardline? Personally I found BF4 a disappointment from BF3 so I am still 50/50 on even ordering this one.

  • Looking for a client to access arch bbs

I find reading the arch forums on bbs.archlinux.org using firefox cumbersome and slow. Is there a command line client out there, i.e. ncurses-based, which will allow me to browse the bbs more quickly and efficiently?

  • Dhcp server won't admit my Arch Linux (though Win's have no problems)

    1. Generally my dhcpcd works fine in every network (and always has, I have not changed anything substantial).
    2. Currently I am in a network (for just a couple of weeks) in which it does not.
    3. The network will ignore all my dhcp requests over both network devices, enp1s0 and wlp2s0 (ethernet and wifi)
    4. When trying the same from Windows (dual boot), the dhcp client works brilliantly (i.e. the hardware is fine)
    5. I can force entry into the cable network by simply assigning an IP address and setting netmask and gateway as was configured by dhcp when I tried from Windows
    6. For wifi this does not work. More specifically it works for a brief moment if (and only if) I was connected from Windows immediately before and assign myself the same IP address (I can ping the gateway and also 8.8.8.8). After this moment the network apparently kicks me out (cannot ping anything any more, nothing answers). dhcpcd inform (dhcpcd -s <IP Adress>) does not fare better.
    7. I tried changing some of the settings in dhcpcd.conf that have been given as reasons for similar problems in the forums, archwiki, or somewhere else, including exchanging 'duid' for 'clientid', and commenting out 'require dhcp_server_identifier'. Does not help. My dhcpcd.conf, see below.
    8. dhclient does not work either.
What I want: Connect to the internet via wifi from Arch.
I guess this comes down to making the dhcp server believe my Arch was one of the Windowses it is used to. How do I do that?
I understand that dhcp does not involve clients revealing their operating systems to the servers; but some configurations are likely different between Arch and Windows. I am not used to working with Windows and have no idea how to access the dhcp client configuration settings there (if this is even possible) to get an idea what exactly is different. Here is my dhcpcd.conf - any ideas what exactly about it displeases the server so much or what I might change or add to make the server more pleasantly inclined?
    dhcpcd.conf
    hostname
    clientid
    #duid
    persistent
    option rapid_commit
    option domain_name_servers, domain_name, domain_search, host_name
    option classless_static_routes
    option ntp_servers
    #require dhcp_server_identifier
    nohook lookup-hostname
    noipv4ll
I would include the logs as well, but they are boring beyond belief, do not contain anything except for dhcpcd trying and failing with timeout.

    Thanks, MoonSwan & ewaller,

Found that, There are a lot of "Advanced properties", for instance "Bandwidth Capacity" is set to "11b/g: 20MHz", "BSS Mode" is set to "802.11n Mode", "Fragmentation Threshold" to "2346" (whatever that may mean) ... etc. Unfortunately, I cant copy any of that; most of it also seems rather unimportant; also I left all this on its default setting when I followed the instructions on how to connect to this wifi on Windows.
However, here is some information I managed to squeeze out of the pathetic, pittyful Windows terminal which they call the "Comand Line"

What I find odd is this "Taredo Tunneling Pseudo-Interface". As a matter of fact, I have not the slightest idea if this is happening inside this local Windows I have here or if this is something real in the network configuration (on the other side of the access point)... It apparently should tunnel IPv6 to IPv4 and/or vice versa. However, why would there be two connections over the same network interface (IPv6 and IPv4)...
What is odd as well is that the DHCP server is not part of the subnet my Windows is in. It just seems to announce IP, netmask, gateway to the Windows ... (the gateway is in the subnet). Could it be that the Linux dhcp client does not accept something like that. No, that's unlikely, right? dhcpcd -d should have reported this...
    MoonSwan wrote:Btw, love the name,
    Thanks. Likewise
MoonSwan wrote:it's nice to see such a name after seeing so many that are intentionally hurtful to others of any stripe in a rainbow.
Actually, I always felt that the Arch Forum is quite tolerant in this respect. (And so is reddit, but of course, you are right, there are places on the internet where you can run into a lot of assholes. Kind of like in the real world... Quite frustrating.)
ewaller wrote:I guess it could be a MAC problem. but I don't know.
Unlikely; on windows the mac address is the same.
ewaller wrote:  Can you get to the router logs? Can you see if the router saw a solicitation?
no. and given their network configuration I don't suppose the IT people here would be very forthcoming if I asked them. Their helpdesk said that they couldn't help me since my laptop was not one of their computers.
ewaller wrote:Also, (just a sanity check) are you sure you are connected to the correct access point?  But that does not make sense -- you said this happens on wired as well sad
    Dang.
I am. It's WPA2 encrypted & I only have access data to this one wifi network. (To avoid confusing everyone with mentioning too many different things, I did not detail this in the original post. I am accessing it using wpa_supplicant running in a terminal; wpa_supplicant works fine says "connection succeeded" etc. So the problem is not in the WPA/ wifi-connection layer but really in the IP/dhcp layer.)
ewaller wrote:Is this a corporate environment? A school perhaps?
Yes, a university. They have someone working here who went through great lengths to make it difficult for people to connect to the internet.

  • RMAN duplicate target database for standby from active fails to create newname for system tablespace/datafile

When executing 'duplicate target database for standby from active'  the system tablespace/datafile (datafile 1)  is not cloned.  All other datafiles clone successfully.  The RMAN process aborts with the following errors while attempting to clone the system tablespace/datafile.
    ORA-19558: error de-allocating device
ORA-19557: device error, device type: DISK, device name:
ORA-17627: ORA-01041: internal error. hostdef extension doesn't exist
ORA-17627: ORA-01041: internal error. hostdef extension doesn't exist
    ORA-03135: connection lost contact
    Here are the details:
Primary is 11.2.0.2 RAC database  on an Exadata platform
Standby is 11.2.0.2 Single Instance database (same patch level as primary) on a Red Hat Linux box
This is an ASM to ASM duplication.
This is not unique to this database.  We tried another database and go the same behavior - all datafiles clone successfully with the exception of the system tablespace/datafile.
We have traced the RMAN execution and it seems to fail when it is trying to assign a NEWNAME to the system tablespace/datafile.
We even issued an explicit SET NEWNAME command but RMAN ignored it.
We also shutdown the primary and started is up in mount mode thinking that something had ahold of the System Tablespace/datafile.
We also opened up the network firewall to allow permit any,any traffic.
    We increased the max_server_processes
and added TCP.NODELAY=yes to the sqlnet.ora file.
There seems to be some artifact present in our Primary System tablespace/data file that is preventing it form being cloned.
checked all alert files grid, asm,  and dbhome - no abnormal messages.
We are in the process of restoring the database from a backup but we would prefer to get this working using the 'Active Database' methodology

I successfully created the standby database using RMAN backup and recovery.
I started the managed recovery.  Archive logs are being sent from the primary to the standby ( I can see them in ASM), but the standby is not applying them.
I get the following messages in the standby alert log...
