Duplicate Computer/IP Names

Hello,
I am trying to understand what should happen in SCCM 2007 when:
- a computer is renamed...
- a computer is replace hardware wise...
- a computer has its Operating System Upgraded..
As a result of rename, change of hardware, upgrade from Windows XP to Windows 7 I have tons of old machines remaining in the SCCM Console even the names and IPs have been reused.. Some machine were done with an upgrade, some with a hardware change but 100s
are duplicated now..
Thanks,
Dom

read the technet article what happens in such cases
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/837374 and these
duplicate records will be deleted automatically by default maintenance task (delete aged discovery data) that you have scheduled.
If you want to remove them from Database,Create collections as listed in blog post http://eskonr.com/2014/03/sccm-configmgr-2012-delete-duplicate-obsolete-records-etc-using-collections/ and
delete them.

Hello,
" these duplicate records will be deleted automatically by default maintenance
task"
The task is scheduled but it does not work as machine are still duplicated after 6 months now...
I will definetely try the second option but if anybody has idea on the first option to know why they are not deleted I would appreciate your feedback.
Thanks,

  • IOS 8.1 Mesages/Text Message Forwarding - Duplicate Computer names

I just upgraded to iOS 8.1 on my iPhone 6.  On my IPhone, when enabling Text Message Forwarding to my devices I noticed that my Mac's (15" MacBook Pro 5.1 Late 2008 with Yosemite) computer name appeared there twice. As expected, only one of the two duplicate computer names was successfully activated (switched to green) for text message forwarding,
I had recently changed/edited the Computer Name of my Mac in System Preferences/Sharing panel.  The duplicate names that appear in Text Message Forwarding is the previous/old name and the existing name of my Mac described above.
Is there a way to delete the old name from appearing in Text Message Forwarding by changing something on my Mac, such as editing or deleting a plist?
Thanks in advance for any constructive assistance, comments or suggestions that can help me fix this.

    Problem solved!
I changed my iCloud password and the duplicate device names (ghost devices) disappeared from Settings/Messages/Text Message Forwarding on my iPhone.
I hope this helps somebody with a similar issue.

  • Duplicate computer name Windows XP

    Hello,
I applied Security Update 2011-005 this morning. Now when my Windows XP clients are rebooted, they pop up a message "Duplicate computer name exists on the network."  Looking in the XP System event log points the finger at my iMac as refusing to allow that name.  Unplugging the iMac from the net fixes the issue.
I have about 200 computers inside my firewall, probably 90% Windows (either XP or 7 Pro). This problem hits multiple XP computers, all with unique names.(so, yes, my single Lion client prevents dozens of XP systems from accessing the Windows network)
I looked at the iMacs Netbios name, it is "13-155-8" which seems to be the last three octets of my dhcp IP address. (35.13.155.8)  I have no idea how it came up with that, I've never bothered assigning one.
Seems to be related to Macs keep assuming Netbios names causing Windows computers to get error but the fix there doesn't apply.

    Hi and welcome to Discussions,
as it seems Netflix not only needs Windows but also the Internet Explorer 6.0 or higher, so from the Mac OSX side you have no luck, since the latest IE for Mac is 5.0.
I would suggest getting BootCamp from Apple http://www.apple.com/macosx/bootcamp/
and of course a valid Windows XP SP2 or Vista license/package.
    Have Fun

  • My computer's name has a (2) after its name in Side Bar-why?

I had this problem some time ago and thought I'd saved the reply in case it recurred- can't find it!
In the sidebar my computer's name is: SCSMB but just today I noticed that it now appears as:
    SCSMB (2)
This happened once before and I got a nice fix from someone-- can't find that. Seems to occur when I connect my PowerBook G4 to the intranet here-- but it has the name of SCSPBG4 so don't think there are two SCSMB computers here or???
WAIT I JUST TRIED SOMETHING: I went to System Preferences / Sharing and edited the name of my computer. It was listed as SCSMB-2 (or in the edit section as SCSMB-2.local) so I just changed it to SCSMB.local and voilà the (2) is no longer in the sidebar-- BUT DID I cause any problems for sharing or ??? by doing that?
Thanks if anyone can tell me if what I did is correct; and why this name change may have occurred etc. (what to do to avoid this)
    Thanks and regards, Steve

What you did is fine. This happens on occasion especially if you happen to have other computers on your network with the same computer name. Sometimes the OS erroneously detects the name as a "duplicate" and then changes the name since you cannot have two devices with the same name.

My wife had an iPad for a year and synced to our computer with no problem.  I recently received an ipad2 and when I tried to sync using separate apple and iTunes passwords, under her computer user name, it appears I over-road her account and synced all her apps with my apps on my iPad.  I then set myself up as a new user on our computer and tried to sync.  I now get the error that my iPad is synced to another library.  How can I start over without erasing all my data on the iPad?

Go back to her login.  Unless you deliberately erased apps, they should all be there, both yours and hers!  Then, you need to set up each iPad separately.  You will notice that they have separate names for that very purpose.
There is no problem with multiple Apple IDs on the same iTunes on the same computer except...  Apps are permanently associated with the ID that was originally used to obtain them.  If you choose to update an app from inside iTunes and you're logged into the "wrong" ID, you must log out and back in again.
On the bright side, you can configure either or both iPads to sync with apps and music and movies, etc. from either or both IDs.  Further, if you choose to update the apps from the iPads themselves, there is no need to log out/in.  The device handles that.  All you need is the correct password.  In my case, I use the same password for both IDs to make things easier.

  • Problem with computer's name.

I got my computer from Macmall and the owner of the computer's name is user. I changed the admin's user name to my name but that still did not fix the problem. How do I change it?

Open the Sharing pane of System Preferences and change the name.

  • Computer's name went from MacBook to MacBook(2)

I bought a Macbook aluminum a week ago. In the login window it said :"my name's MacBook". Now, I realized the computer's name is "my name's MacBook(2)"
Any idea why it happened, what are the implications and how to solve it?
    Thanks

    Any idea why it happened
It thought another computer with the same name was hooked up to the LAN.
    what are the implications
None unless its name is used as part of establishing a file sharing connection.
    how to solve it?
Change it from the Sharing pane of System Preferences.

  • Make a Mac's Computer Name the Same as it's OD  Computer Record Name?

I heard someone mention that its possible (at least in 10.5 server) to make a Mac's Computer name become exactly as its OD Computer Record name is (at the time of binding). I assume this would be a setting in Server Admin/OD or in WGM perhaps. I cant find the setting. Can you locate it for me?
Im running a test Leopard OD master in Advanced mode on an Xserve Xeon.

OK, let me give you a similar scenario regarding computer record names.
I had previously setup OD to set computer names based the computer record name once the Macs were bound to OD.
I decided later that that naming scheme will not work (I need the computer (host) name and the OD computer record name to be different for logisitical reasons - long story). I unbound my OD clients and trash all LDAP settings to start over from scratch. One problem:
I cant for the life of me find that checkbox on my OD server to disable that setting. I have looked everywhere. I check WGM and Server Admin too. The post you made earlier doesn't look like the steps I took to setup the option to force the computer name from the record name. I simply checked a box. I also did enable authenticated binding either.
I have a test OD lab right now. None of the servers and clients are in production, so I have the luxury of experimenting a little before we go live in Q1 2008.

  • Authentication popups after computer name changed to computer record name

    Hi
I'm not sure if anyone else is facing this issue, but I have been unable to find anything in the forums.
I have setup a number of client machines on Lion Server, all using 10.7.4. I used WGM and Remote Desktop to make some changes and deploy software
Since then, I have been getting the following authentication popup on all client machines (twice after login, and then every 30 mins or so afterwards):
Mac OS S wants to make changes. Type an administrator's name and password to allow this.
The changes made prior to this happening were:
    - Overplay VPN installed (using RD pkg install)
    - Adobe CS 5.5 installed (using Adobe Enterprise Deployment Tool and RD package install)
    - Evernote installed (using RD copy)
    - Set computer name to computer record name (From WGM > Computer Groups > Preferences > Options)
I have now removed all the installed software from one machine, and log in as administrator, unbind the machine, rename the computer manually to the record name, rebind the computer.
As far as I can see, I have reverted all changes one at a time, and am still receiving the admin password requests when logged in as a network user.
The only machine that seems to be ok, is the one where the name change to computer record name was unsuccessful.
Does anyone have any suggestions as to how I can fix this issue?
    Thanks
    Suraj

Issue resolved. It turns out none of my changes caused the issue as much as Google Chrome Autoupdates. The new version constantly checks for updates which makes clients on Lion Server go haywire. Solution to turn off auto-updating:
    Open a Terminal window:
    defaults write com.google.Keystone.Agent checkInterval 0
    Relaunch Chrome.

  • Change computer's name?

At the very top of the tree I have my computer's name, I seem to remember during the setup process that the name I typed (for something) would be set forever, I think it could be this as I find no way to change it.
Is the computer's name set in stone and if not how do I change it please.

The Computer Name can be be changed in System Preferences >> Sharing >> Computer Name
    -mj
