Duplicate Copies of Files

Whenever I try to import files into lightroom from drive C:, LR seems to go into a loop making duplicate copies of all the files
in the directory I'm trying to import from.
This behavior seems to extend to trying to delete files from the directory where all the photos are stored usinf winodws explorer, if I try to select more
than one file using the 'ctrl' key in explorer, the files are copied in the same directory. Using LR 1 and Windows XP.

I don't quite understand the question; the only way a file can be saved with the same name in the same folder (directory) is if it's saved as a different file type (i.e. with a different file extension).
So you can have fred.jpg and fred.tif and fred.pdf all in the same folder, but trying to save any one of them with the same extension will bring up the warning dialogue asking if you want to replace the original.
Saving as a copy will modify the name to fred copy.jpg for example.

  • Where do I find settings to avoid saving duplicate copies of files

I have just about had it with this overpriced piece of ####, but my wife loves it and this is her machine.
I see there are numerous copies of the same file in the same directory\folder. (documents, pictures, you name it)
Is there someplace I can set the system to challenge when someone attempts to save or copy a file to a folder in which a file with that same name already exists?
    Thank you for you help

  • Duplicate copies of files ending in "alias"?

    Hi,
I am currently powering my Macbook via the mains with the battery taken out as it is faulty. The magsafe cable came out accidently resulting my mac turning off immediately. Now that I have turned it on, in the files in Finder and on my desktop have duplicated with each files' name ending in "alias". The capacity of my hard disk drive is still the same. I tried deleting one of the files and noticed the hard disk memory increased. What does this mean? And how do I get rid of them?
Any help would be much appreciated, Thanks.

Make sure first that the messages have indeed been removed from the server. Choose Get Info (⌘I) from the Action menu (gear icon) located below the mailboxes list in the main Mail window. Does Mail display there the messages that keep reappearing?
If the messages have been removed from the server, you may be able to get rid of them in Mail doing Edit > Cut (⌘X).

Does time capsule make duplicate copies of the files those are already exist in it?

It's not clear just what you mean.
If you're backing-up your Mac, via the Time Machine software, to a Time Capsule or external HD, then yes, by default, Time Machine will copy everything the first time.  Subsequent backups will copy only what's new or changed.
If you mean, can you back up other data on a Time Capsule, no, not with Time Machine.  It can only back up TO a network location, not FROM one.

  • Opening duplicate copies of the same File in CS4

    Hi
I have recently upgraded some of my customers from CS3 to CS4 and I have noticed that when I open a document that was last opened in CS3 i can open the file more than once and they get listed as tabs. If i make changes to the the first open document and save it, the changes do not effect the other open copies of the file.
however once i have saved the file in CS4, if i try and open the document again it simple brings up the already open file in Indesign.
Is their any way I can make this the default behaviour for all documents, as a number of my clients have complained that they have accidentally opened the file more than once and they save the document and close it down and when they close the duplicate copies down and click save it overwrites all the work previously done.
    Thanks
    Nick.

I'm not sure what you want to change the default behavior to, but I'm pretty sure there's no way to change it. This is no different than the way previous versions opened old-version files, except that CS4 shows you the multiple, same-named files as tabs instead of as separate windows. If you want ID to behave exactly as it did in previous versions, you can turn off the tabs in preferences (Edit > Preferences > Interface > Open documents as tabs).
Why do you want to open multiple copies of the same file? If you're converting from CS3 to CS4, why not just open the CS3 file and Save As to a new name?
Keep in mind that CS4 H&Js slightly differently than CS3. You can expect to see some minor text re-wrap going from CS3 to CS4 (but not until you start editing a story). It's always a good idea to finish CS3 jobs in CS3, start new jobs in CS4.

  • Library has been duplicated, duplicates have no file location. Easy way to remove?

Library has been duplicated, duplicates have no file location. Is there an easy way to remove them?
It's a royal ache going through each one, clicking to see if it will play, getting a 'cannot locate the file' message, delete, etc etc.
Showing duplicates just shows I have a lot to tidy up.
    <Edited By Host>

Apple's official advice on duplicates is here... HT2905: How to find and remove duplicate items in your iTunes library. It is a manual process and the article fails to explain some of the potential pitfalls such as lost ratings and playlist membership.
Use Shift > View > Show Exact Duplicate Items to display duplicates as this is normally a more useful selection. You need to manually select all but one of each group to remove. Sorting the list by Date Added may make it easier to select the appropriate tracks, however this works best when performed immediately after the dupes have been created.  If you have multiple entries in iTunes connected to the same file on the hard drive then don't send to the recycle bin.
Use my DeDuper script if you're not sure, don't want to do it by hand, or want to preserve ratings, play counts and playlist membership. See this thread for background, this post for detailed instructions, and please take note of the warning to backup your library before deduping.
(If you don't see the menu bar press ALT to show it temporarily or CTRL+B to keep it displayed.)
The most recent version of the script can tidy dead links as long as there is at least one live duplicate to merge stats and playlist membership to and should cope sensibly when the same file has been added via multiple paths.

  • Moving one folder to another copies the files instead of moving them

I have a folder in the top level of the system disk, and I want to move it into the 'Documents' folder/library.  When I click right and drag the folder over, it copies the files instead of just moving it. Just to be clear, the source folder and the target folder are on the same disk.
    Thank you for helping!
    Pete

    I'm on 10.4.11 too.
I could not duplicate your results.  On my system, the folder was always moved.
If I didn't have sufficent privileges, I got:
Eventhou it says copy, it did a move after i enterred my password.
I was on an admin id.
Here are the permissions I tried.

  • Duplicate copies of synced music & music with box unchecked synced

I have duplicate copies of songs listed although only one will actually play.  I also have whole albums which are not checked to sync to my iPhone.  I have unchecked all albums to be synced and only have artists boxes checked but this has not got rid of the one I do not want on my phone or duplicate listings.  Any ideas please?

Have a look at Teridon's iTunes Scripts, Robert has a script in there for dealing with duplicates which might be of some help: Teridon's iTunes for Windows Scripts
Just note: The duplicate eliminator in Robert's scripts package only works for these two kinds of duplicates:
    1) Multiple copies of the exact same file (e.g. "Song.mp3" and "Song 1.mp3", where "Song 1.mp3" is simply a copy of Song.mp3
    2) Multiple entries in the iTunes Library for the exact same file.
The script does nothing for duplicates that are the same song, but different files (e.g. encoded by someone else, has different artwork or other tags, etc.)
There are also some third party programs out there, like "Dupe Eliminator" that might help in more complicated cases. If you do a quick web search I'm sure you'll find more: Dupe Eliminator

  • MY system folder, including hidden folders are littered with duplicate folders and files with the suffix (from old Mac) How do I remove them

I have a Macbook Pro running Leopard 10.5.8. I had a problem with my my operating system (my fault, I moved a file I shoudnt have) couldnt boot up but was able to boot up from a backup. I managed to repair my original system except now all the system folders, including hidden folders are littered with duplicate folders and files with the suffix (from old Mac).  For the most part the dupes are an exact copy, but not always.  I want to remove them to free up space and cant imagine duplicate folders in the /system/library are not hindering my computer. But I dont know where to start and am afraid of doing irreparable damage. Any ideas

My MacBookPro with Mountain Lion seems to be making copies of files in my download folder.  Why is this happening and how do I stop it?

This issue has nothing to do with Time Machine or local snaphsots. No built-in feature of OS X does what you describe.
Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a diagnostic test. It won’t solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
Third-party system modifications are a common cause of usability problems. By a “system modification,” I mean software that affects the operation of other software — potentially for the worse. The following procedure will help identify which such modifications you've installed. Don’t be alarmed by the complexity of these instructions — they’re easy to carry out and won’t change anything on your Mac.
These steps are to be taken while booted in “normal” mode, not in safe mode. If you’re now running in safe mode, reboot as usual before continuing.
Below are instructions to enter some UNIX shell commands. The commands are harmless, but they must be entered exactly as given in order to work. If you have doubts about the safety of the procedure suggested here, search this site for other discussions in which it’s been followed without any report of ill effects.
Some of the commands will line-wrap or scroll in your browser, but each one is really just a single line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, and you can then either copy or drag it. The headings “Step 1” and so on are not part of the commands.
Note: If you have more than one user account, Step 2 must be taken as an administrator. Ordinarily that would be the user created automatically when you booted the system for the first time. The other steps should be taken as the user who has the problem, if different. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this paragraph doesn’t apply.
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
When you launch Terminal, a text window will open with a line already in it, ending either in a dollar sign (“$”) or a percent sign (“%”). If you get the percent sign, enter “sh” and press return. You should then get a new line ending in a dollar sign.
    Step 1
Triple-click the line of text below to select it:
    kextstat -kl | awk '!/com\.apple/{printf "%s %s\n", $6, $7}'
Copy (command-C) the selected text to the Clipboard. Then click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste (command-V). Post the lines of output (if any) that appear below what you just entered. You can do that by copy-and-paste as well. Omit the final line ending in “$”. No typing is involved in this step.
    Step 2
    Repeat with this line:
    sudo launchctl list | sed 1d | awk '!/0x|com\.(apple|openssh|vix)|edu\.mit|org\.(amavis|apache|cups|isc|ntp|postfix|x)/{print $3}'
This time, you'll be prompted for your login password, which you do have to type. It won't be displayed when you type it. You may get a one-time warning not to screw up. You don't need to post the warning.
Note: If you don’t have a login password, you’ll need to set one before taking this step. If that’s not possible, skip to the next step.
    Step 3
    launchctl list | sed 1d | awk '!/0x|com\.apple|edu\.mit|org\.(x|openbsd)/{print $3}'
    Step 4
    ls -1A /e*/mach* {,/}L*/{Ad,Compon,Ex,Fram,In,Keyb,La,Mail/Bu,P*P,Priv,Qu,Scripti,Servi,Spo,Sta}* L*/Fonts 2> /dev/null
Important: If you formerly synchronized with a MobileMe account, your me.com email address may appear in the output of the above command. If so, anonymize it before posting.
    Step 5
osascript -e 'tell application "System Events" to get name of every login item' 2> /dev/null
Remember, steps 1-5 are all copy-and-paste — no typing, except your password. Also remember to post the output.
    You can then quit Terminal.

  • How to get rid of duplicate copies of Mail in inbox?

    Hi,
Actually, I have two separate questions that both relate to Mail version 1.3.11 running on an I Mac G5 using 10.3.9. I had Total Access which is earthlink.net's software configure this program, Mail, when I recently upgraded to DSL with them. Now, I'm getting duplicate copies of email in my Mail program. I may have accidentally chosen something which I now can't locate in Total Access. Does anyone have a clue as to how I could go back to just getting one email rather than duplicate copies?
The other question is: is there any incompatibility between this version of Mail and DSL? I know that may sound odd, but we're having intermittent service and think it's probably a routing problem. However, I notice at times when I want to go on the internet and check the mail, the Mail app freezes and I have to perform a force quit. Then when I want to go to google say, my connection is gone. It's not gone for good, but it makes me wonder if there's some glitch between the Mail program and Total Access. I've asked Earthlink.net and they say "no," but I'm asking all of you because I'm not convinced.
Thanks so much for your help!

  • If I bring in photos from Iphoto, am I using more disk space on my hard drive. I dont want to duplicate my entire file. I have 26000 photos in I photo.

If I bring in photos from Iphoto, am I using more disk space on my hard drive. I dont want to duplicate my entire file. I have 26000 photos in I photo.

You have to duplicate the photos unless you want to use PSE as the external editor for iphoto. In iphoto, your photos are stored in a proprietary library, which should never be messed with by programs other than iphoto. Writing to the iphoto library from outside iphoto is the fastest way to corrupt it and lose all the pics it contains.
So you can either set PSE as your external editor and send the photos from within iphoto, or you must export the photos from iphoto to be able to use them outside that program.

  • How to I locate and delete duplicate documents and files

I am trying to clean up my macbook and want to find and delete duplicate documents and files.  How do I do this?

Finding duplicate files is something a lot of people do.  I do not understand why Apple hasn't built it as part of Smart Folders?  It would have taken a good coder only 1 hour of work to do that!
Pathetic of Apple, really pathetic!  A prime example of crippleware!

  • Remove duplicate folders (and files)

I have attempted several times to merge two folders named "jazz".  I haved check the box to skip files and folders that are already in the target.  I just noticed that I have been keeping both, so I have folders called sax 1, sax 2, etc. with identical contents.  I also have similar issues in the root directory, which has multiple copies of files with numbers appended at the end.
When I realized this, I cancelled a merge, and now have ghost files instead of the original, un-numbered file name.
Is there any way to easily fix this mess so I have just one copy of each file and folder, preferably without a number appended to the name?

  • Duplicate "._" jpg files from PS4

    Hi
I'm new here so hope this hasn't been answered before - I couldn't find anything in search
I'm trying to put some jpgs (which I have edited in PS4 extended with my Mac), onto a memory stick and SD Ultra card to show on a Sony Bravia E4500 via the usb input.
The original files show on the Sony and they play beautifully - BUT now there is a duplicate set of files - same name - but with the prefix "._" These files won't play, thus making a slideshow virtually impossible. These duplicate files show up on a different brand of LCD as well so I doubt it's a Sony problem.
Unedited Camera files from the Nikon or Lumix cards directly copied to the memory stick don't exhibit this problem - neither do files from images downloaded with iPhoto and copied straight to the stick - yet if I open these files in PS and save to stick I get a duplicate set of files.
The files that don't have a problem don't have thumbnails when viewed on the stick menu
Files downloaded with Nikon software do produce duplicates without any PS editing.
So I'm thinking PS is adding something on Saving - like thumbnail info (or Nikon software - Capture or View)
I have tried saving the photos in PS without thumbnails but I still get the sane problem.
I have searched for these hidden files on the Mac and Memory stick using Houdini but couln't find them.
A PC cannot see these files either - only the LCD TVs
Sony Help couldn't help, neither could Apple Help.
    I'm going crazy
    Thanks
    Alan

Neil is correct, these are the left-overs of the Mac OS resource fork.
They can be made to show up in a Windows XP if you select Tools then Folder Options... and then go to the View tab. On the list, check the "Show hidden files and folders" option. They can then be deleted.
To stop them being transmitted in emails (which confuses the heck out of some of my Windows-based clients), be sure to check "Send Windows Friendly Attachments" in Mail when attaching the files.
I had always thought that "Save for Web & Devices" would save without a resource fork, but just having tried it (PS CS4 11.0.1), it still seems to...
I believe there are also 3rd party utilites that will strip out resouce fork information from all files in a folder (something like "Resource Dropper")but I've not tried any myself.
