Duplicate entries in iChat AIM Buddy List

Just got a new Mini, set it up and opened iChat - for some reason all of the Buddy entries in my Buddy List are listed twice.  If I try deleting one of the entres it deletes both; logging directly into AIM has each listing presented only once.  How do/can I fix this and get the list properly displayed?

Hi,
I use iChat 6 with separated Buddy Lists (See the iChat Menu > Preferences > General section)
This is because I have several Buddy lists that Login to AIM and I did not want some Buddies being Duplicated where I have them in different lists.
Having said that I just linked them and they did not seem to be duplicated.
I have heard of people getting this Doppelganger type thing if they have linked either Facebook or GoogleTalk chat accounts to AIM Buddies in which case they seem to be "reflected" back via Google or Facebook to iChat if you list your Facebook/Google account as well as your AIM one.
It may also pay to check your Address Book if your are seeing people via their "real names' as shown in the Address Book.

  • Logged into iChat, but buddy list isnt showing up.

    Yesterday night, March 10, I logged onto iChat and my buddy list didn't show up. So i restarted my computer and nothing happened. Still no buddy list. I logged on to AIM and i got my buddy list to load. So is there anything i can do to get my buddy list to load on iChat? I've tried everything i can, yet nothing works. Everyone just appears offline and even the AIM Bots won't load.

    Hi,
    Welcome to the    Discussions
    Before we list everything you have already tried can you list what that actually is please ?
    Have you checked the iChat Block List ?
    Have you changed the setting from what it is to something else and back again to write it to the .plist ?
    Have you tried deleting the .plist
    Have you tried the one where you delete your Screen Name from the iChat Accounts section and then re-add it ?

  • IChat - empty buddy list

    Hi all,
    yesterday I downloaded and installed the iChat Update (Universal) 1.0. Afterwards I was able to connect through AIM, but the buddy list is empty now. Everything worked fine before the update was installed. I didn't change any of the settings. So what's going on? Any ideas how to get this fixed?

    Changing port didn't work. The failure occured for me while logged on and before installing any updates. I have since installed the update, and changed the port, and threw away all iChat preferences, and it still doesn't work. No buddies, can't add buddies, can't chat with a buddy by name ("Your security settings prevent you from chatting with this person"). I can't be seen by them either.

    Hello all
    I signed up for Ichat but when i click on it it opens in a tiny window saying Disconnected and it's saying this every time i click on the icon
    any idea please? i have the WHITE SNOW LEOPARD I don't know my number sorry
    Thx Chel

    Hi,
    Did you sign up for an AIM name or an Apple one ? (@Mac.com or @Me.com)
    In System Preferences > Security > Firewall is the Firewall ON ?
    AS you are on Snow Leopard you will have to use the Advanced Button and tick Allow Signed apps and iChat to the List.
    Is iChat allowed through your router ?

  • Javascript to check for duplicate entries in 2 pull-down lists

    I have created an application form in Acrobat 8 Professional, using LiveCycle and would like to compare selections in 2 drop-down lists so that the same option is not selected twice. I think this is something that could be done with javascript, but my experience with scripting is limited to typing the word scripting. Will someone please provide step-by-step instructions for a newbie? Thanks!

    The attached sample compares the selected value from two drop-down lists.
    // form1.page1.subform1.dd1::exit - (JavaScript, client)
    if (!(form1.page1.subform1.dd1.isNull)) {
      var stooge = form1.page1.subform1.dd1.rawValue;
      stooge = stooge.toLowerCase();
      if (!(form1.page1.subform1.dd2.isNull)) {
        var stooge_ = form1.page1.subform1.dd2.rawValue;
        stooge_ = stooge_.toLowerCase();
        if (stooge == stooge_) {
          xfa.host.messageBox("You have picked the same Stooge from each list.");
    // form1.page1.subform1.dd2::exit - (JavaScript, client)
    if (!(form1.page1.subform1.dd2.isNull)) {
      var stooge = form1.page1.subform1.dd2.rawValue;
      stooge = stooge.toLowerCase();
      if (!(form1.page1.subform1.dd1.isNull)) {
        var stooge_ = form1.page1.subform1.dd1.rawValue;
        stooge_ = stooge_.toLowerCase();
        if (stooge == stooge_) {
          xfa.host.messageBox("You have picked the same Stooge from each list.");
    I am multitasking so beware.

  • How to get the iChat Buddy List to automatically appear on the Desktop

    On my friends computer iChat is set to launch whenever he logs into his account, but the Buddy List does not appear on his Desktop. So when I see him online there is no green video camera mark next to his name.
    If I want to do a screen share with him, I have to ask him to go to the iChat icon towards the right side of the Menubar (the round 'speech ballon') and click on Show AIM Buddy List at the bottom. Once he has the Buddy List on his Desktop, I can screen share with him.
    Surely there must be a way for the Buddy List to always appear on the Desktop when logging into his computer... Can anyone help out?

    Hi,
    Interesting one.
    If I were telling you how to create this it would be like this:-
    1) Go to System Preferences > Accounts > Your account and enter iChat in the Login items. (Makes iChat launch at Computer Start Up)
    2) to Hide the Window (Buddy List(s) ) at Start Up click the Red Button to close the Window/Buddy List before Quitting.
    This will cause the next Start Up to not show th Buddy List.
    How you make the Buddy List appear after that depends on how you bring it in to View.
    NOTES:
    Some Windows in iChat from Buddy List to the Preferences to th Actual Chat Windows will appear in the places you left them for the most part.
    The Exceptions are Incoming Invites.
    This means the Buddy List will be were you left it, your Outgoing Invite/Preview whilst waiting for Connection will always be where the last outgoing Video Chat window was.
    Using the Red Button on a Open Chat Window will end the Chat (All types).
    However doing it to a Buddy List only Hides it.
    In addition to this using the Item (or the Keystrokes) from the Window Menu of iChat for a Buddy list when it is On view will Hide it (or Bring it back if Hidden)
    The Show AIM option in the Menu Bar icon's drop down is a two edge thing as it shows All Buddies (Available ones) from all AIM Buddy lists if you have more than one (Apple names are also AIM Names in this case).
    Does he want to change this Behaviour ?
    He would be better off using the iChat Window menu (or Keystrokes) after he has clicked the icon in the Dock to bring the app to the Front so he can access the Menu bar with ichat in it.
    He could also click and Hold the icon for iChat in the DOCK and select the Account Name there. This, if I remember correctly, will have the same effect as presenting the Buddy List from the Menu Bar icon (it will be hidden at Next Start Up)

  • Buddy List window does not appear when starting iChat in Leopard

    In Tiger when I started the iChat application, the Buddy List window always appeared immediately. In Leopard, it does not appear and I must choose Window from the menu bar and then select AIM Buddy List. Does anyone know how to correct this so the Buddy List window appears automatically when I start iChat in Leopard?

  • IChat does't display buddy list when opened & shuts down when opening prefs

    I just did the software update and like some other people am having some problems. When I open iChat, the buddy list doesn't come up and I didn't see anything in the menu bars to open it. Also, when I open preferences the program just shuts down before prefs opens. Please help me out if you know how to fix it! Thanks

    Go to Users/(your account)/Library/Preferences and delete com.apple.ichat.plist.
    Restart iChat.

  • Buddy disappearing from buddy list

    My brother is in my address book and I try to add him to my AIM buddy list and he just disappears after it seems to blink a few times...

    If a Contact is in the Address Book with or without a Screen Name and you try to add the same Person as a New Buddy with First and Last Name in iChat the Address Book will not allow you to duplicate the entry and iChat does not add the Buddy.
    The actual issue is called Feedbag Error 10 but iChat 4 does not report it as such.
    Add the Screen Name to the Info in the Address Book and then drag the Name in the middle column to iChat (or when Adding a Buddy use the drop down to expand the Address Book bit and choose the Address Book Name that way).

  • Unable to choose a friend's .Mac username to add to buddy list

    I'm having trouble trying to chat with a friend who has a .mac username.
    I have an AIM username (used to have .mac while it was still free), and a neighbor's is [email protected]
    I have her entry in Address Book (although with her username listed as AIM since .Mac isn't a choice), and have exchanged emails with her, but her name is always grayed out in iChat's buddy list, and neither I nor she are able to initiate a chat conversation, even just text chat.
    If I try to start a chat, I can type her username, but I don't have a choice between AIM or .Mac in the popup sheet -- I can only select AIM.
    I've tried quitting iChat, deleting the com.apple.iChat.SubNet.plist file, then starting iChat again. I've also checked that all the relevant ports are open and that we're not in each other's Blocked Users lists.
    What's next?

    You have the option to choose between aim and mac in
    that window if it concerns your own account.
    You only should choose between the aim and .mac
    option when you, and here's the solution, get a free
    .mac account, and invite your girlfriend by clicking
    the + on the buddylist and add her .mac account.
    So...
    With me having an AIM account, and when I select New Chat With Person..., I won't be able to select .Mac as the service when it asks for her username... correct?
    In Address Book, when I try to add her .mac username on her card, I don't have a choice of .mac -- I can choose AIM, Jabber, MSN, ICQ and Yahoo.
    As far as I can tell, my old .mac username is still active, as I can make an account in iChat and log in. But, that didn't help either (already tried it before starting this thread).
    I've got other buddies already who are on .mac accounts themselves, and I haven't had this problem with them.

  • Problems logging in to iChat (AIM)

    About 1 out of 3 times that I log into my AIM buddy list, my status shows as being connected, but none of my contacts appear in my buddy list.
    Even after quitting and restarting iChat, nothing changes. The only solution I have discovered is to got preferences, and delete the AIM account, and then re-add it back into my account list.
    Any ideas?

    Hi
    Try logging on to AIM on port 443 rather than port 5190.
    Go to IChat in the menu bar > Preferences > Accounts.
    Log out of AIM and then use the Server Settings tab
    Set the port to 443.
    Log back in again.

  • Annoying dual buddy lists

    In the new iChat, whenever I click on the icon in the dock, iChat pops open, and displays both "Contact List" and "AIM Buddy List" at the same time. This is not so much a serious problem as an annoyance, as having two nearly identical buddy lists seems redundant. I'm guessing this is due to preferences, but I haven't been able to fix the problem thus far.

    In iChat 4 you can have at least three Buddy lists if you have an @mac/AIM name a Jabber/GoogleTalk one and the Bonjour list for other Macs.
    If you go on to have multiple AIM/@mac names (or Jabber ones) you get the name changed at the top of the List normally based on the Login name.
    I have one Jabber name logged in at present and the List is called Jabber List.
    I have a @mac name and a different AIM name that show the Screen name as the List name.
    I have not heard of one called Contacts.
    Then I played in ichat > Preferences > Accounts and changed the Description of one of the Accounts to Contacts and that named the account as that at the Top.
    It would seem that is most likely what you have done.

  • IChat: AIM accounts

    I have noticed that when you add a user, contrary to what the box says for account type you must select either AIM or .mac......if I choose the .mac account and add the users AIM account they are grayed out in my buddy list....if I go ahead and add them as an AIM account then everything is fine....is there a way to scan a local network for logged in iChat people and then add them to your buddy list without knowing if they are an AIM or .mac account....
    thanks

    Hi Glen,
    A Couple of things.
    You have posted in the iChat 2 forum and our Specs say you are at iChat 3
    Both in this case can not add @me.com names that come form Newer MobileMe Screen names based on the email the person gets/chooses.
    These HAVE to be added as AIM types of Names but type in Full as in [email protected]
    You will notice in this page at the 4th picture that if you chose .mac the Suffix (@mac.com) is added for you.
    This will happen as you point out if you type an AIM name in there
    It is the same for iChat 3
    iChat 4 does make it a little more obvious by adding the suffix as a greyed out item pre-filled in the text field.
    At present if you are using ichat 2 or 3 you can choose between @Mac and AIM names.
    Most people will make it clear that it is one of the three types that are valid with your AIM Buddy list (whether your Screen name is AIM or an Apple one you will log in to the AIM servers and add Buddies of AIM or the two Apple types to it).
    AS to whether that are Lists the answer is there were and are.
    I have some listed here.
    The List itself is somewhat censored based on the type of Lists that are available.
    Both Apple and AIM say that the minimum age is 13 years of age. However a Google Search will produce more of an Adult nature.
    Even some of those I list cost to join and access the info.
    You can Add Buddies already Chatting to you with any type of Chat window open by going to the Buddies Menu and choosing Add <buddyname>
    This menu changes to the Above format when a Text, Audio only or Video chat is going on. It will also add the Buddy as the correct sort - all you have to do is Add any "Real Name" info you want or link it to a Contact already in the Address Book.
    I would say on the whole the type of name the Buddy is using gets easier to spot with time. This may explain the drop in more common social Networking type of Lists + the rise of FaceBook and similar.
    I hope this is of some help.
    I may receive some form of compensation, financial or otherwise, from my recommendation or link.

  • Buddy List

    Ok. This should be the most basic thing of all, and I can't believe I even have to ask this friggin question, but I don't seem to be capable enough to add a buddy to my buddy list. My girlfriend's address ends in @mac.com, as does mine. When I add her info, she appears in my list, her name flashes, then she is deleted from my list automatically. Why the **** is it doing this? When I added her name under @AIM.com, she stayed in the list, but she is offline (even when she's online) and I can't contact her because the AIM account doesn't accept offline messages. It both shows us under AIM buddy lists, if that makes a difference. Any help is appreciated.

    Hi,
    Welcome to the    Discussions
    If you add a Buddy in iChat and Add the First Name, Last Name info in to the Panel AND that person is already in the Address Book then iChat 4 and 5 do not tell you hat the problem is but make the Buddy "disappear", not even putting them in the Off Line Buddies.
    The issues is related to the fact you can not Add the same Contact Info to the Address Book twice.
    You need to use this Arrow to link to the card already in the Address Book
    Longer info here http://www.ralphjohns.co.uk/versions/ichatvers4/ichatvers4pics/AddBuddies/iChat4 Slide.html
    AIM names would not normally end in @AIM.com although it is a possible name format (you can get email Address from them and use them as Screen Names but most people don't).
    I may receive some form of compensation, financial or otherwise, from my recommendation or link.
