Duplicate Entries in Library

In the process of trying to move my itunes library to an external drive, I've ended up with duplicate entries for each file. Both entries play the same file, but when one entry is deleted from the library, the file gets deleted, and the remaining entry does not play. How do I remove one of the duplicate entries without deleting the file?

It seems there's only one library - on the external drive. Before I moved my library, I looked in itunes help to figure out how to do it properly, and never really got a clear answer, so I just copied and pasted my files onto the external drive, then deleted the original library off the internal drive, and things went from bad to worse from there. Everytime I consolidate the library, it just seems to duplicate everything, not really solving the problem. It's not a question of duplicate files - it's more a question of duplicate listings/entries for the same single file so that if I delete the wrong entry/listing from the library, the remaining listing can't find the file to play, because I've just unwittingly deleted the music file.

  • Upgrade to iTunes 8.1- duplicate entries in library

Since upgrading to 8.1 (and having just managed to rescue my iPhone from sync disaster caused by 8.1) I notice that I have duplicate entries in my purchased library which were not presnet before.
This seems to be songs which were purchased before iTunes Plus versions were avaiable, but were subseqently upgraded to iTunes Plus versions. In the music folder two files can be seen for each song, one of which is locked. Both get listed in the library as the same song in this 8.1 version, something that has not happened in earlier iTunes releases.
Should I do anything to correct the library from showing duplicate entries? Or shoudl I wait for this bug to be fixed?
    Thanks.

um that's not the case for me... I have used the wire that came with the phone as well as the wire that I purchased to charge the phone and the bluetooth headset and I'm still having problems. When I plugin my ipod classic however, it works fine. now the problem with both items is that when I plug them in, is that they show full battery life right away, and they stop charging. The weird thing is that on iTunes, it shows that it does NOT have a full charge. this happens both with the iPhone as well as the ipod. it's very annoying and I have to plug both of them to an electrical outlet so that the battery can charge. And forget about syncing my music, it says it's not recognized, or that is the memory is not available, so it doesn't sync. I've been so ****** at my iPhone lately, that all I want to do is throw it out the window...
And before you suggest what I think you will suggest, yes, I just did a full restore on the **** thing, and it's STILL showing up as fully charged when it's not....
I can't wait till my two years are up with ATT so that I can get rid of this phone.

  • How to not add songs from Playlists to the library (duplicate entries)

In my iTunes library, I have lots of songs showing up more than once. When I right-click Get Info it seems this is because I have them on playlists that are also in the library. Songs in multiple playlists can even show up more than twice.
I know I can Show Duplicates but it would take me ages. Also I can't tell which songs are direct, and which are from a playlist, unless I right-click and Get Info individually (it probably doesn't matter, but I'd prefer to delete the playlist songs).
How do I edit the preferences so that this doesn't happen, and songs in playlists aren't added again? I looked around preferences and couldn't find anything that seemed to be what I needed.

"Go to Library - Music and click Show duplicates.
Select a duplicate and right click - Show in Windows Explorer.
Everything in the library should be pointing only to an actual file on your HD, not a song in a playlist."
...I'm not sure if you're saying that iTunes shouldn't be behaving like this, but it IS. I followed your instructions, selected Library - Music and clicked Show Duplicates... what I see is 511 entries, most in pairs, some triplets.
    Here's an example:
Two identical entries (bitrate, files size, duration, etc., all the same) for Get Me by Everything But The Girl... clicking Show in Explorer for the first entry opens an Explorer window with the filepath:
    D:\Music\Everything But the Girl\Amplified Heart
...clicking the second entry opens the SAME Explorer window with the same contents but with the filepath:
    D:\Music\My Playlists\..\Everything But the Girl\Amplified Heart
So are you saying that the only way to eliminate these duplicate entries is to individually click each one and check if it's pointing to the original song file or to a playlist that includes that song and then delete it manually? ...for 511 entries? ... and how do I prevent this from happening with any new music I add?

  • Is there a way to delete all duplicates, other than one by one?  some free program or does itunes have one to just identify and delete all duplicates in the library?

How do I delete duplicates in my library as a group, rather than one by one?

Apple's official advice on duplicates is here... HT2905: How to find and remove duplicate items in your iTunes library. It is a manual process and the article fails to explain some of the potential pitfalls such as lost ratings and playlist membership.
Use Shift > View > Show Exact Duplicate Items to display duplicates as this is normally a more useful selection. You need to manually select all but one of each group to remove. Sorting the list by Date Added may make it easier to select the appropriate tracks, however this works best when performed immediately after the dupes have been created.  If you have multiple entries in iTunes connected to the same file on the hard drive then don't send to the recycle bin.
Use my DeDuper script if you're not sure, don't want to do it by hand, or want to preserve ratings, play counts and playlist membership. See this thread for background, this post for detailed instructions, and please take note of the warning to backup your library before deduping.
(If you don't see the menu bar press ALT to show it temporarily or CTRL+B to keep it displayed.)
The most recent version of the script can tidy dead links as long as there is at least one live duplicate to merge stats and playlist membership to and should cope sensibly when the same file has been added via multiple paths.

  • Deleting duplicate entries in iCal?

How do I delete duplicate entries in iCal (identical entries on the same date)?

    Todd,
I suspected a more serious problem because the answer was too easy.
Thousands of duplicate entries...Is this what happened?
According to, Mac OS X 10.4: Stay away from the SyncServices folder: As if it were a swarm of bees, you should stay away from the SyncServices folder in Mac OS X 10.4. Removing or modifying anything in it—or in subfolders within it—may cause unexpected issues. (This folder is located in your Application Support folder, in your Library folder, in your Home folder.)
Deleting or modifying things in the SyncServices folder may cause unexpected results such as:
    • Duplicate contacts in Address Book or appointments in iCal.
    • Data loss in Address Book or iCal.
Important: Any lost or duplicate data could propagate to other devices and computers via iSync and .Mac sync. This means data could be lost on other computers. If that is your problem, I suspect that without a backup, duplicate entry deletion will at best be tedious, and at worst fraught with frustration. You may be better off starting from scratch.

not possible from inside AB AFAIK. but you can do the following. in finder open the folder /users/username/library/application support/address book/metdata. switch to the list mode and sort by date modified. quicklook the vcards at the top to see which ones they are.

    Hi Sudhakar
You can use Customer exit variable if not already using. That way you can remove duplicate entries via little ABAP.
You can go through the following link for the steps involved in creating a Customer Exit variable.

  • Lots of Duplicates in Itunes library

I recently bought a Seagate external drive to back up my music, among other things, to using SyncToy. When finished I went to look at the results and found that SyncToy had not backed up all my music and those backed up had a lot of duplicates. Not so concerned about SyncToy here but if anyone knows why it didn't back up everything I would appreciate the help.
The problem is the duplicates in the library.. Some CDs had none. Some had incomplete song titles with a correct title included. Some had duplicates of every title with a (2) at the end. Some were duplicated with no indication of any differences. I did check the file size often enough (by hovering over the title) to generalize they were the same size. Sometimes there are 3 files, two duplicates and one with a (2) at the end.
My library is "organized" in the Music under Itunes Media, I use Itunes 10.7 and do NOT want to "upgrade" to Itunes 11.
Any ideas where they came from? And if I can somehow get rid of them, will they come back? I recently subscribed to Itunes Match to rid my old purchases of copy protection, it worked but those matched songs have no more or less duplicates than those ripped from CDs. I have been using Itunes since about 2003, so the libraries have gone through many upgrades.
    Thanks for the help!

  • ICloud Address Book and Calendar not syncing. Missing and duplicate entries. Help.

I have duplicate entries in Address Book. I have missing entries on other devices. For calendar it just doesn't sync.
What I've done to try to fix it:
    1) I signed out of all my devices from iCloud and MobileMe.
    2) I then deleted all the the cache files in Library and any iCloud folders I could
    3) I deleted all the address book and calendar entries on each device.
    4) Went back and deleted anything in Library and caches.
    5) I looked at iClould.com and confirmed they had entries in Address Book and Calendar.
    6) Signed back into iCloud on each device.
    7) All the devices then began to populate.
    Trouble began:
    1) Some Address Book entries are missing on devices.
    2) iClould has multiple entries for the very missing contacts! All cutting off the notes field at different places!
    3) It won't sync the missing contacts present on iCloud but not the device.
    Help.

Solved it myself. What I did:
    1) I have four Lion OS and two iOS devices.
    2) I kept one computer with the complete address book I wanted to start with but disconnecting it from iCloud's Contact sync via Apple Menu > System Preferences > iCloud uncheck Contact Sync
    3) Logged into iCloud.com and deleted all the contacts and groups manually ( many keyboard shortcuts worked )
    4) On the main computer, using textedit, I replaced semicolons I was using to delimit items in the notes field with backslashes.
    5) Once I confirmed all the other computers and devices had no entries in Address Book, on the main computer I turned back on iCloud Contact syncing. It worked. Correct count of entries and no more breaking notes at the semicolons!
    6) Immediately all the other iCloud computers and devices updated to the correct notes! Finally.

  • Duplicate Entry in Child Tables in AD Process Form on triggering multipleAP

    hi all,
I have a scenarion in which I have to provision AD Group Membership, for addition of each role to User.
so I have created 5 Access policies, 5 roles and mapped AD Group in each access policy.
The roles are comming from trusted source seperated by a string tokenizer.
I have java code which will trigger and assign the role memberhsip to user, one after the other. iterating with the string tokenizer(;)
The problem I see is, I see multiple entries of AD Groups in the process form for each group.
If I add 3 roles to the user, I am seeing 6 entries in the AD Process form. Duplicate row for each and every row. sometimes i see 3 entries for each row. and 1 entry for each row.
If I add the role memberships manually, by searching, then I dont see any problem with the AD child form.
and also If I add a single group membership I dont see any problem with the AD Child form.
I suspect that the event handler tcEvaluateAccessPolicies which is there in the post update is trying to add the duplicate entries as still the AD Group membership which is triggered for the first time is not yet finished by evaluating the access policies again.
any such experiences? thoughts? work arounds?
my oim environment is OIM11.1.1.3.0 on weblogic server.

I have always coded these checks into my custom code whenever i maninuplate child table data. When adding, i always check the existing and when deleting, i always check if the value exists that i'm removing. I would suggest you write a piece of code that does the same and keep it in your library of re-usable code.
You could try going to the database and making the field for the name a unique field. I don't know what the outcome will be from doing so.

  • HT5373 duplicate entries in iCloud calendar

I see multiple entries of the same event on my iCloud calendar. All my devices ( Macbook and iPhone) shows this. I tried deleting some of the calendars but no use. How do I delete those duplicate entries?
    Thanks

I have had similar duplication problems. All sorted by de-synching. BUT! My wife's birthday now appears on two different dates, following earlier experiments. I delete her card in Address Book, and both related iCal birthday entries disappear. When I add a new Address record for her, whatever I put under Birthday, the old error date shows in iCal.
Running 10.5.2 and iCal 3.0.2, I have to admit I cannot find the Calendars folder in ∼Library/Application Support. Possibly this would cure the problem.

  • Ipad still showing duplicate entries for songs.

my Ipad still showing duplicate entries for songs. I have unchecked Show Itunes in the Cloud purchases, I have tried replacing all items when autofilling (before syncing) I have even logged out then back into itunes, to no avail. Can you please assist? Thank you

hi guys, i was just googling the problem as i too have it, i am currently trying to sort it, i have deleted all my music off my phone using itunes and then put it all back on and also tried deleting it and outting 1 album on at a time, still not got rid of the duplicate tracks, i have now used the show duplicate items view and deleted those off my itunes library. i think i may have come across the problem!! i have just deleted all my music off my iphone using itunes again, and it shows nothing being on my iphone, however, if i go into music on my actual phone it is still showing 126 songs and none of them play. so i have now deleted them manually directly from the phone and am now putting all my music back onto my phone hoping i have cured the issue of ghost tracks.
ill let you know when its done if we are cured!!
BOOOOOMMMM!!!!! it worked!!! been so frustating, now its all good, hope this helps anyone with the same issues

  • "open with" duplicate entries

"at times" using "open with" shows many duplicate entries....reboot fixes it for a while..
I'm still trying to determine what is triggering this.
Any idea? Anyone see this in 10.8? I couldn't find anything searching the forums.

I am not familiar with all the causes of this phenomenon, but it happens to me from time to time, and I know why it is for me. I work with "clone" images all the time with dev work. When a clone is mounted alongside booting into  the main volume, Launch Services, which keeps track of applications used to open certain file types, "sees" the other application files on the mounted clone volume, and adds them to the database, resulting in the apparent duplication of "open with" entries.
Resetting the 'Open With' menu will remove duplicates and ghost applications (ones you have deleted) from the list. You reset the 'Open With' menu by rebuilding the Launch Services database your Mac maintains. There are multiple ways to rebuild the Launch Services database, including third-party system utilities like Cocktail and Onyx.
If you don't own a system utility that can rebuild the Launch Services database, don't worry; you can perform the rebuild yourself using Terminal.
Using Terminal to Rebuild the Launch Services Database:
Launch Terminal, located at /Applications/ Utilities/.
For OS X 10.5.x and later, enter the following at the Terminal prompt:
/System/Library/Frameworks/CoreServices.framework/Frameworks/LaunchServices.fram ework/Support/lsregister -kill -r -domain local -domain system -domain user
I don't know wjhy it is happening for you, but rebuilding the database will at least reset things to normal. The question to ask is whether you have other mounted volumes, say from other systems on your network, that contain Mac Apps.
I have also found a way to keep it from happening (in certain cases, for my dev work). When I create a clone, I also create what is called a "fstab" file entry, in the fstab file. This entry prevents named drives from auto-mounting. So, if I boot to a clone, my main volume on my internal SSD won't mount. Hence, no extraneous Launch Services database entries will created on the clone drive. If however, I boot to my main SSD, and then mount a clone, I don't use any fstab entries on the main SSD. This just means I have to periodically rebuild the Launch Services database. It is way too much trouble keeping fstab entries for all my clone drives on my main SSD. I only use the fstab method on the clones themselves.

  • Error "The propertyArray section contains a duplicate entry.."

    Hello,
I'm trying to load a flat file into EPMA, but the system give me back the error:
"The propertyArray section contains a duplicate entry;..."
I correctly set the property IsPrimary...
The error is only about shared elements.
    Could someone help me?
    Thanks
    Maurizio
PS: I'm working on version 11.1.2 Planning

Hi Jasmine and thank you for your answer...
yes, I set the same alias for the primary member and for the shared member in the hierarchy section. I tried before, in other applications, to load metadata with shared members sharing the same alias with the primary member and it worked. Maybe this time i have made a mistake with the ADS file but i'm not able to find it out.
The application is managed with Shared Library. When i load metadata in Shared Library, EPMA returns warnings, not error.
Am i wrong or it is possibile to load shared member via ADS file with duplicated alias?
I think these warnings don't allow me to deploy the application correctly.
Thank you very much for your help.

  • Local_domains.db duplicate entry

    Hi everyone,
I'm seeing the following error repeated every so often in my SMTP log:
    Dec 28 12:45:14 rocking-mm.com postfix/postmap[19452]: warning: /Library/Server/Mail/Data/scanner/amavis/local_domains.db: duplicate entry: "rocking-mm.com"
I'm not sure what is causing this, as I am running on a brand-new install of OS X Server 10.8 using Server App 2.2.
I have seen some other posts which refer to things like host domain and mydomain being the same, but none of that makes sense to me, as everything was filled in automatically during the setup process. Unless, of course, the setup process is flawed and this is a bug (which wouldn't surprise me, there are plenty of other bugs as well).
    Any help is appreciated!
    ~Mike

Any chance you listed your local domain also under the virtual domains? That would cause it.
What are the contents of /Library/Server/Mail/Data/scanner/amavis/local_domains (without the .db extension)?
