Duplicate file detection and removal across multiple volumes?

hello there
i use decloner, for duplicate file removal.. it works great for removing duplicates on the same volume, unfortunately, i have a mac pro with multiple hdds and want to run a duplicate search which includes every hard drive, which decloner doesn't seem to do. (some of my hard drives have identical folders and files)
can anyone recommend me a piece of software that does duplicate removal across multiple volumes?
many thanks!

My backup email admin sez "Whew"
I sez "Whew and Thank You very much"

How can detect and remove scanned white pages in an OCRd pdf file?

Acrobat does not support an automated way of doing this directly. You can
remove completely blank pages (pages that don't have any "marking
objects"), but a scanned page does contain an image, so Acrobat won't help
you here. There are a number of 3rd party applications and plug-ins
available. Try a Google search for
    remove blank pages from scanned
    pdf<http://www.google.com/search?client=safari&rls=en&q=removeblankpagesfromscanned+pdf&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8>
This will bring up a few different solutions.
Another way is to use JavaScript to find text. You say that these documents
are OCRed, so if you have a blank page, it should not have any text on it.
With some JavaScript, you can identify pages that don't contain text. This
may however fail if you have a page that contains just e.g. a photographic
image. There won't be any text, but the page is certainly not blank.

  • Spreading your Aperture Library across multiple volumes/drives/disks

I recall reading posts elsewhere by others (on an Adobe Lightroom forum) on how one's Aperture Library had to sit on one volume, meaning that it could not span multiple disks. At the time I figured I would be fine for a while since I had about 150 GB of free space on my main disk, yet kept the topic at the back of my mind.
Today, as I do regularly, I was backing up my (Aperture) library to my iPod, (not through the "vault" mechanism but simply using Finder,) when I noticed it was copying (many) individual files, rather than one large file! Being familiar with Unix, including how certain items in Mac OSX are treated, such as "Applications" that appear to be one object in the GUI, yet are merely a folder structure behind the scene, it occurred to me that the Aperture Library, rather than being some sort of single-file database format, just might be a folder instead.
I checked, and it is. Mind you, that doesn't prevent Aperture from keeping proprietary files within those folders, however, it would seem to me that one could easily use symbolic links to throw some of the files, perhaps at the project level, onto other disks, and thus span your library across multiple volumes even if Aperture does not yet offer or manage this ability.

Perhaps this article will help shed light on Aperture's library organization:

  • ITunes creating duplicate files under a hidden folder named "Volumes".

It seems my iTunes program is secretly making a duplicate file in a hidden folder called "Volumes" on my laptop hard drive. It's now maxxed out my drive and I need to both remove the "Volumes" folder and make sure it doesn't get created and happen again.
    Details:
Using a Powerbook G4 with an 80gb drive. Using iTunes 8. The iTunes library program is in the usual place on the lap top hard drive but the music library folder, where all the files get saved to, is on an external drive labeled "Media".
Clicking normally and searching around my laptop hard drive, I do not see or am able to access the folder named "Volumes". But I know it exists as I ran a scan program called jdiscreport and it clearly shows a huge folder, 45gb, named "Volumes". There are also a few old flacs in the "Volume folder also. The iTunes duplicate files are in identically named folders as the external drive: iTunes Music located within Media, located within Volumes.
When I rip a CD in iTunes (or the iTunes-LAME program I sometimes use), the files do go to the proper external folder as expected and as I've set in the iTunes preferences section. So why is iTunes also saving the same thing to this mystery "Volumes" folder on the lap top hard drive? How do I get rid of this folder without wiping my drive? How do I stop it from continuing?
Help, I have 2gb of free space left!
    Thanks, James

Hi I am having a similar issue, It all started when I tried to restore from the Time Machine and it threw a error back stating that there is no disk available. I was wondering how come and went to find out what is happening and was shocked to find out that actually my entire Macintosh HD has a duplicate copy inside the /Volumes folder. I went to the XTERM to investigate and found that the / (root) has a Users folder where all my stuffs like pictures, music, movies, documents reside and the same data or content is duplicated in the /Volumes/Macintosh HD/Users folder
I first thought that it was only a link, but I later found that it is not a link and it is indeed a physical copy of all my User folders inside the /Volumes/Macintosh HD/Users folder and actually occupying my Hard disk space.
I am not sure how this happened or how it is duplicating itself. I am also afraid to delete the stuffs inside the /Volumes folder as it might crash my system (it is already hidden - I assume it is hidden for some purpose). Please suggest any options, how I can get rid of these duplicated data and how to avoid such duplication in the future.
    Thanks

  • Find and Replace across multiple topics

I haven't used RoboHTML in a few years and am getting back to using it again. this is a fairly simple question, but the Help for RoboHelp doesn't seem to provide an answer.
How do you do a simple find and replace across multiple topics?  I want to search for a text string and replace it with another text string.

    Hi,
Have you tried to use the "Multiple File Find and Replace" option present in RoboHelp. You may access this option from Edit->Find and Replace in Files.
Before trying to find the files, please ensure that the where field in the dialog points to the correct location of your project.

I don't think that you're supposed to type in the number "2". What ufsrestore is looking for is the next ufsrestore volume, not the volume number. If it is a tape drive, which this apears to be, you specify the tape drive device: dev/rmt/0cn.

  • Adobe_flashplayer_e2c7b_Setup.dmg Is this malware? If so, how to detect and remove it?

    adobe_flashplayer_e2c7b_Setup.dmg
Is this malware? If so, what is the easiest way to detect and remove it?

There is no need to download anything to solve this problem.
You may have installed one or more of the common types of ad-injection malware. Follow the instructions on this Apple Support page to remove it. It's been reported that some variants of the "VSearch" malware block access to the page. If that happens, start in safe mode by holding down the shift key at the startup chime, then try again.
Back up all data before making any changes.
One of the steps in the article is to remove malicious Safari extensions. Do the equivalent in the Chrome and Firefox browsers, if you use either of those. If Safari crashes on launch, skip that step and come back to it after you've done everything else.
If you don't find any of the files or extensions listed, or if removing them doesn't stop the ad injection, ask for further instructions.
Make sure you don't repeat the mistake that led you to install the malware. It may have come from an Internet cesspit such as "Softonic" or "CNET Download." Never visit either of those sites again. You might also have downloaded it from an ad in a page on some other site. The ad would probably have included a large green button labeled "Download" or "Download Now" in white letters. The button is designed to confuse people who intend to download something else on the same page. If you ever download a file that isn't obviously what you expected, delete it immediately.
Malware is also found on websites that traffic in pirated content such as video. If you, or anyone else who uses the computer, visit such sites and follow prompts to install software, you can expect more of the same, and worse, to follow. Never install any software that you downloaded from a bittorrent, or that was downloaded by someone else from an unknown source.
In the Security & Privacy pane of System Preferences, select the General tab. The radio button marked Anywhere  should not be selected. If it is, click the lock icon to unlock the settings, then select one of the other buttons. After that, don't ignore a warning that you are about to run or install an application from an unknown developer.
Still in System Preferences, open the App Store or Software Update pane and check the box marked
Install system data files and security updates (OS X 10.10 or later)
    or
Download updates automatically (OS X 10.9 or earlier)
    if it's not already checked.

OS X has got its own security systems, so you don't need any antivirus. Furthermore, they will only slow down your computer. If you want more information, read > http://www.thesafemac.com/mmg
If you want an antivirus, install ClamXav, but you don't need an antivirus

  • How can I detect and remove keystroke logger software?

I suspect that my soon to be ex-husband has surreptitiously installed keystroke logger software (or other "spyware") onto my MacMini.  Is there a way to detect it and remove it?   Any recommendations for protection software? Or, is it better to wipe the machine clean and reinstall software and files?  I cannot afford a new computer right now, so buying a new one is not an option.

If you know or suspect that a hostile intruder has either had physical access to it, or has been able to log in remotely, then there are some steps you should take to make sure that the computer is safe to use.
First, depending on the circumstances, computer tampering may be a crime, a civil wrong, or both. If there's any chance that the matter will be the subject of legal action, then you should do nothing at all without consulting a lawyer or the police. The computer would be the principal evidence in such a case, and you don't want to contaminate that evidence.
Running any kind of "anti-virus" software is pointless. If I broke into a system and wanted to leave a back door, I could do it in a way that would be undetectable by those means—and I don't pretend to any special skill as a hacker. You have to assume that any intruder can do the same. Commercial keylogging software—which has legitimate as well as illegitimate uses—won't be recognized as malware, because it's not malware.
The only way you can be sure that the computer is not compromised is to erase at least the startup volume and restore it to something like the status quo ante. The easiest approach is to recover the entire system from a backup that predates the attack. Obviously, that's only practical if you know when the attack took place, and it was recent, and you have such a backup. You will lose all changes to data, such as email, that were made after the time of the snapshot. Some of those changes can be restored from a later backup.
If you don't know when the attack happened, or if it was too long ago for a complete rollback to be feasible, then you should erase and install OS X. If you don't already have at least two complete, independent backups of all data, then you must make them first. One backup is not enough to be safe.
When you restart after the installation, you'll be prompted to go through the initial setup process for a new computer. That’s when you transfer the data from a backup in Setup Assistant.
Select only users in the Setup Assistant dialog—not Applications, Other files and folders, or Computer & Network Settings. Don't transfer the Guest account, if it was enabled.
Reinstall third-party software from original media or fresh downloads—not from a backup, which may be contaminated.
Unless you were the target of an improbably sophisticated attack, this procedure will leave you with a clean system. If you have reason to think that you were the target of a sophisticated attack, then you need expert help.
That being done, change all Internet passwords and check all financial accounts for unauthorized transactions. Do this  after the system has been secured, not before.

  • Duplicate File IDs showing up in multiple post offices

We have come across a strange issue. Several users are missing their file IDs. We looked at the user databases and found duplicate file IDs spread across multiple post offices. Joe Smith might have file ID aba in Post Office One while Bob Jones would have the same file ID in Post Office Two. Is this normal? What would happen if we had to move a user from one post office to the other with a duplicate ID.? How can we fix this?
    Any thoughts would be appreciated.

  • Duplicate file detection

No matter what import settings I select when I import files from the card reader the importer re-names the file to "filename +#" and imports it again.
I eliminated all copies of the "new" pictures from the organizer and hard drive. I then imported the files and it never recognizes that they are duplicates. I leave some photo's on my camera. How can I get the "duplicate detection" to work?

I'd like to recommend using this duplicate file finder to deal with unnecessary files on your hard drive. It has many functions, user-friendly interface, safety options and 100% efficiency.

  • Duplicate files inside and outside of iphoto

    Hi there
When I first set up my new mac I had a folder of about 20Gb of photos organised into different folders, transfered from my old PC. I started to import them into iPhoto one folder at a time. After a couple of folders were imported - each with subfolders mainly organised by year, I realised that iPhoto was duplicating the folders into the iPhoto library. I then changed the import setting to keep the photos in their original location for the import and relocated the remaining photos.
I thought all was well but now I have about 8Gb of duplicated photos; one set inside of iPhoto with metadata, faces, events, locations tagged, rotated and cropped, and the other set out in a central photo storage file just as standard files.
My question is how can I now get rid of the duplicates outside of iphoto so that I only have single versions of the photos, the images inside of iphoto being the master file to keep. Are there any clever programs or is the manual method the only way to go?

You need to decide what app you want to use to manage your photos.
IPhoto and Lightroom (and Apple's Aperture) are all variations on a theme. Though they work in different ways they are all Digital Asset Managers. They all want to import your photos, ”own“ or manage them for you, while also giving you some (in the case of iPhoto) or a whole lot (in the case of Lr or Aperture) processing power as well.
The process you're attempting - where Lightroom and iPhoto share the originals - will not work really.
    Why?
Edits and processing done in Lr will not be available to iPhoto. It simply will not know about changes you make there. So when you go to use these images elsewhere all you will see are the originals or edits you have made via iPhoto.
The reverse is also the case. No edits made in iPhoto will be available in Lr.
This includes metadata like keywords and so on.
For iPhoto to have access to the Lr processed images you will need to export them from Lr and then import them to iPhoto.
My personal suggestion is that you use the more powerful application to manage your pics.
I don't think there's a migration path from iPhoto to Lr. (There is from iPhoto to Aperture). I would suggest that you start over from scratch and export the originals from iPhoto (File -> Export: Kind - Original) and then import to Lr.
There is at least one plug-in that will facilitate moving selected pics from Lr to iPhoto for sharing etc and it can be found here
    http://www.suffix.be/blog/lightroom-iphoto-export
There may be others - Google is your friend
I really dislike the way iPhoto hides all the images making it very difficult to access an image with a different program.
It's not at all difficult. Want to access the images in a Photo Editor?
You can set Photoshop (or any image editor) as an external editor in iPhoto. (Preferences -> General -> Edit Photo: Choose from the Drop Down Menu.) This way, when you double click a pic to edit in iPhoto it will open automatically in Photoshop or your Image Editor, and when you save it it's sent back to iPhoto automatically. This is the only way that edits made in another application will be displayed in iPhoto.
However this will +not work+ for Lightroom as it is not a Photo Editor, as mentioned above.
Other than that, your iPhoto Library is available in every Open... dialogue in the entire OS.
There are many, many ways to access your files in iPhoto:
*For Users of 10.5 and later*
You can use any Open / Attach / Browse dialogue. On the left there's a Media heading, your pics can be accessed there. Command-Click for selecting multiple pics.
    Uploaded with plasq's Skitch!
(Note the above illustration is not a Finder Window. It's the dialogue you get when you go File -> Open)
You can access the Library from the New Message Window in Mail:
    Uploaded with plasq's Skitch!
*For users of 10.4 and later* ...
Many internet sites such as Flickr and SmugMug have plug-ins for accessing the iPhoto Library. If the site you want to use doesn’t then some, one or any of these will also work:
To upload to a site that does not have an iPhoto Export Plug-in the recommended way is to Select the Pic in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export and export the pic to the desktop, then upload from there. After the upload you can trash the pic on the desktop. It's only a copy and your original is safe in iPhoto.
This is also true for emailing with Web-based services. However, if you're using Gmail you can use iPhoto2GMail
If you use Apple's Mail, Entourage, AOL or Eudora you can email from within iPhoto.
If you use a Cocoa-based Browser such as Safari, you can drag the pics from the iPhoto Window to the Attach window in the browser.
*If you want to access the files with iPhoto not running*:
For users of 10.6 and later:
You can download a free Services component from MacOSXAutomation which will give you access to the iPhoto Library from your Services Menu. Using the Services Preference Pane you can even create a keyboard shortcut for it.
For Users of 10.4 and later:
Create a Media Browser using Automator (takes about 10 seconds) or use this free utility Karelia iMedia Browser
    Other options include:
    1. *Drag and Drop*: Drag a photo from the iPhoto Window to the desktop, there iPhoto will make a full-sized copy of the pic.
    2. *File -> Export*: Select the files in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export. The dialogue will give you various options, including altering the format, naming the files and changing the size. Again, producing a copy.
    3. *Show File*: Right- (or Control-) Click on a pic and in the resulting dialogue choose 'Show File'. A Finder window will pop open with the file already selected.
