Duplicate filenames (using 2 cameras)

How does iPhoto work with 2 (different) photos that would have the same filename?
(i.e. my wife and I both have olympus cameras; the filenames are 'coded' with the date (and a sequence#) (as part of the filename).)
Would like to store all photos in one user account. The 'duplicate named' photos would also share tags etc...
Thanks

One problem you will run into at a later date is if you try export those photos outside of iPhoto to a folder. If two of those files have the same file name you may get a warning and won't be able to export. There are three workarounds to that:
1 - do a batch, sequential rename of the title for those files and then export using the "Use Title" option.
2 -use the Sequential option which will give you the opportunity to add the file name to use which will give you file names text1.jpg, text2.jpg, etc.
3 - use the "Use Album" option which will give you file names Album name-0.jpg, album name-1.jpg, etc.
A fourth option would be to upload from the camera to a folder on the desktop and then batch sequentially rename them with an application like R-Name. You can give them an appropriate title and indicate which camera they came from.
I use the date and a letter designation depending whose camera it came from: 2006-03-27-d01.jpg.
Do you Twango?
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've written an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 08 libraries. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

    Hi Greg
    Thanks for your fast reply.
What you suggested is exactly what I am doing now, and also I increased the number of rows allowed to map en Xcelsius which are 512 by default.
I would like to know now, how many rows are advisable to increase? Because I am using some components and you must specify for each one a certain number of rows.
I test mapping 3000 and even 6000 rows but the model is too slow and I was not able to export the swf file in any format.
    Thank you again,

  • PSE9: Using File/Move; what happens with duplicate filenames

    I have PSE9 on Win7.
I'd like to use File/Move to move a large number of images from one set of folders to a another location.
The new location would be a single folder.
I'm pretty confident that I have duplicate filenames. So the same filename exists in more than one
    of my 'source' folders.
Using File/Move what is going to happen when I encounter these duplicates?
Thanks for any help or advice.

So I used a belt and supenders method of organization. Tags and folders.
Oh, how I hate that phrase. This has sent many people down the road of organizing two different ways, with a cost. You did twice as much work. And in my opinion, using two different ways to organize was totally unnecessary, and waste of effort.
But in all honesty I don't use a lot of the advanced features of PSE. So from time to time
Neither do I. But that is irrelevant to how your set things up so you can find your photos when you want them.
For my new downloads, I believe I will just put them all into a single 'My Pictures' folder.
Unless your version of PSE has more features than mine does, putting them into a single folder (without subfolders by capture date) is more work than using the default folder naming scheme, which is capture date! And it buys you nothing! There is absolutely no harm in using the default of putting photos in folders by capture date. Don't make extra work for yourself! Now if your version lets you put all your new photos into a single large folder ...
I read some web articles that gave me the impression that there might be another way to migrate rather
    than Backup/Restore.
Not sure what you read. You could manually transfer all your photos AND catalog file from one computer to another, and if you get all the details right, everything still works! But the onus is on you to get all the details right.
It sounded like after writing all the metadata those images could be File/Get Photos... intoPSE. But I also saw there may be a need to use the Keyword Tags/+/Save Keyword Tags to File function as well.
Writing metadata to files does not let you rebuild your catalog completely. There is information in your catalog that will never be written to the files themselves. In fact, writing metadata to the photo files was NEVER intended to be a backup method; it was intended to be a method to allow PSE to communicate SOME information with other applications (like Flickr). So, should you want to make a backup, metadata is not the way to go. If you want multiple backup approaches, use the PSE method, and also make copies of your catalog file and photos using some other automated method.
I used the File/ 'Write Keywords and Properties... ' function to write all the metadata back into all of my files. That seems like a good idea because I use multiple file backup approaches. Is there a way to get
PSE to always write that info into a file anytime it changes? Like when I'm adding a tag?
There is no way to automate this.

  • PSE 5 index / catalog duplicate filenames

How does the Photoshop Elements 5 catalog / indexer handle duplicate filenames? Or not? If you just upload your camera's native filenames, you're going to have a lot of _mg_3444.jpg, _mg_3445.jpg, etcetera, files over time. Is this why when you add photos to the catalog, PSE 5 reports back that new file wasn't added to the catalog because the filename alredy exists?

    >Is this why when you add photos to the catalog, PSE 5 reports back that new file wasn't added to the catalog because the filename already exists?
I do not have that message in front of me but I think it says the File already exists rather than the Filename already exists.
The criteria that the Organizer uses to determine whether a photo file is a duplicate of a photo already in the catalog uses more factors than just file name - factors such as size, date and time.
Yes, I agree that there will be different photos that have the same file names. However, the use of the additional criteria should usually prevent different photos with the same file name from being rejected for import.
Usually when I see that message, it is because I have previously imported that photo. Perhaps I had the same photo in multiple folders on my hard drive or I already had a photo and then received it again from another source. Or I am importing from a camera card that still contains photos that were previously imported.
If I get a rejected as a duplicate photo and I don't immediately know why, then I may use the Organizer Find menu and do a Find by Filename to see all photo files with the name that was just rejected. Then I can look at all the photos with that file name to find which one duplicates my current attempted import.

  • Using the camera adapter?

I want to download time lapse video from my plot watcher camera using the camera adapters from apple. Here is the video file information from the manufacturer.
    Any help would be appreciated!
The files are stored on the memory card, in the “\DCIM\100D6OPR\” folder.
The files are named according to date: YYMMDDAA.TLV, where YY = Year, MM = Month, DD = Date, and AA is a “letter code” that is incremented in a sequence (AA, AB, AC, etc.) when multiple files are created on the same date. An example of an actual file name would be 110408AA.TLV.
TLV files utilize the industry standard AVI format. The TLV files can be played in Windows Media Player , Apple QuickTime player, and most video editors if opened manually. In some cases, it may be necessary to rename the file to end in *.AVI.

    MPEG-4 video up to 2.5 Mbps, 640 by 480 pixels, 30 frames per second, Simple Profile with AAC-LC audio up to 160 Kbps per channel, 48kHz, stereo audio in .m4v, .mp4, and .mov file formats;

Transfer the video to your computer & change the format if necessary. Then you can use a USB flash drive & the camera connection kit.
Plug the USB flash drive into your computer & create a new folder titled DCIM. Then put your movie/photo files into the folder. The files must have a filename with exactly 8 characters long (no spaces) plus the file extension (i.e., my-movie.mov; DSCN0164.jpg).

I can transfer pictures from my SD card when I don't have transferred it to my pc first. But why can't I transfer from pc via SD and then into my iPad2? I'm using Apple camera connection kit.

If you are adding the photos yourself, then you need to create a DCIM directory off the root of the card, with the photos underneath it with filenames exactly 8 characters long (no spaces) plus their file extension i.e. in the same format as if your digital camera had written them.

    Hi Jdentremont,
Lync client gets user photos by first querying the Address Book Web Query (ABWQ) service on the server, which is exposed through the Distribution List Expansion web service. The client receives
the image file and then copies it to the user's cache to avoid downloading the image each time it needs to be displayed. The attribute values returned from the query are also stored in the cached Address Book Service entry for the user. The Address Book Service
deletes all cached images every 24 hours, which means that it can take up to 24 hours for new user images to be updated in the cache on the server.
To troubleshoot your problem, please follow the steps below:
    1.  Navigate to
     “X:\share\1-WebServices-1\ABfiles\000000000\000000000” folder. (ABS file share)
You should see some photo files in this folder as the following screenshot.
    2. Delete all the files in this folder.
    3. On test PC, delete local cache files.
    %userprofile%\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Office\15.0\Lync\[email protected]
    4. Sign-in Lync with the test account.
    5. Go back to the ABS file share, check if there is any Photo file in the folder.
    Best regards,
    Eric

Select all the photos that you need to change, then click the "Photos" menu and choose "Adjust Date and Time".
If you add a year, it will adjust all the photos that you selected by adding a year (so if you accidentally select one of the photos that already has "2012", that will change to "2013").
