Duplicate finder including also external hard disks, on mavericks any

Hello,
I´m new here. Anmdmy english is probably sometimes at least a little strange , so my apologies...
Since this year I´ve updated my MacBookPro to Mavericks, and now I´m slowly adapting to all the changes > mainly the new apps/programms but also wondering how I can synchronize mycalendar and contacts etc... without the cloud ( I keep being very suspicious regardless several discussions i already had during some one-to-one sessions in the applestore...)
Can somebody recommend a good Duplicate Finder, which searchs and compares also data from external hard-drives? Is Gemini a good choice?
And I´m also looking for a clever Photo Duplicate Finder , found this one:
DuplicatePhotoCleaner
https://www.duplicatephotocleaner.com
would this be a good choice?
Thanks for Help

DuplicatePhotoCleaner lists thrumbnails and modified photos along with the originals and makes it difficult to see what you got.  I feel it would be better used on folders of photos and not on an  iPhoto Library.
You can use one of these applications to identify and remove duplicate photos from an iPhoto Library:
iPhoto Library Manager - $29.95
Duplicate Cleaner for iPhoto - free
Duplicate Annihilator - $7.95 - only app able to detect duplicate thumbnail files or faces files when an iPhoto 8 or earlier library has been imported into another.
PhotoSweeper - $9.95 - This app can search by comparing the image's bitmaps or histograms thus finding duplicates with different file names and dates.
DeCloner - $19.95 - can find dupicates in iPhoto Libraries or in folders on the HD.
In my testing with a test library with duplicate photos installed PhotoSweeper found more duplicates than any other app when comparing the bitmaps.
My second choice would be iPhoto Library Manager as it's the best all around iPhoto utility available.

  • Cannot access external hard disk

I keep all my data in Segate external hard disk. Today I wanted to set up windows using Boot camp. The window installed but at the end it froze. By mistake I kept the External hard disk connected to my Macbook Pro. When I rebooted I cannot find the my external hard disk. I tried to access through Mac partiton but it displays waring.
Saying I need to Initialize the external hard disk. That mean I will end up with erased hard disk which is not i want. Is there any option. ?
It looks like Mac OS cant recognise the drive at all. When I open the Disk Uitiluty I can see the drive.
    Any ideas guys

Try opening Disk Utility and try repairing the disk. It might hopefully be able to repair it. Otherwise you're probably looking at needing a tool like DiskWarrior 4…

  • Indexing of an external hard disk

I am unable to find any results in spot light search from my external hard disk. is there any way to index the files on my external hard disk?
    Thanks
    Sandy

    Try
    sudo mdutil -i on /path-to-volume
    Is the volume read only?
If mdutil -E or -i doesn't fix it, and it isn't a permission problem (hence my question about volume being read only), and it isn't on a network, then I'm out of ideas.
You could always use a real search program like Find Any File or EasyFind.

  • Finder freeze when opening folders of my Western Digital external hard disks

I'm facing a big issue. I'm runnin' Mac Os Lion, I realized a clean install a few days ago. Everything is going fine, but every time I plug an external hard disk on my MBP, I can see the disk appearing on my desktop or in the finder, and when I open it, the finder freezes, I have to reboot manually, or wait to relaunch the finder. My disks are in HFS format, used to work great on Snow Leopard no longer than a week ago... What is weird is that my time machine (external hard disk usb) works fine... Moreover, I can see the disks in the Disk Utility, I can't click on "verify permissions" but on "verify disk" and it says that the disks are fine... Any idea ?
PS : I could have erase everything on them and reformat, but I need the files inside...
    Thanks

    Hi!
    Here's a suggestion from BDAqua:
In finder, select Go menu>Go to Folder, and go to "/volumes".
Volumes is where an alias to your hard drive ("/" at boot) is placed at startup, and where all the "mount points" for auxiliary drives are created for you to access them. This folder is normally hidden from view.
Drives with an extra number on the end have a side-effect of mounting a drive with the same name as the system already think exists. Try trashing the duplicates with a number, and reboot.

  • Finder doesn't like showing one of my external hard disks

I have seen a few threads about on the internet relating to this but no permanent solution.
I recently bought an iomega 500gb MiniMax drive for use with my MacBook, it was working fine and showing in finder for a day or so and then stopped automatically showing up in finder unless I tweak about with it through the following method (HD is called FatBoy):
    sudo chflags nohidden /Volumes/FatBoy/
then I have to reset finder using an apple script:
    tell application "Finder" to quit
    delay 1
    tell application "Finder" to launch
Even then it won't stay there permanently... I am also wondering if the @ symbol below is important as it doesn't show up for other correctly behaving external hard disks...?
    ls -l /Volumes/
    total 12
    drwxr-xr-x@ 13 ndrew staff 510 3 Jan 15:46 FatBoy
Also if this doesn't work I have to remount the disk inside Disk Utility - but this only works after the above steps.
    Thanks in advance

Apple has had bug reports on the invisiblity plague for at least two years now. However, since it has actually gotten worse in Leopard than it was in Tiger I rather doubt they have a solution. Obviously, given the bug reports, they are working on it.
The "@" just means the item in question has extended attributes. In my case ALL the volumes have an @, perhaps because they all have custom icons.

  • External Hard Disk not showing up on Finder

    Hi
My HP Pocket Media Drive (USB), when plugged into my MacBook, does not show up on the Finder, even though it shows up on System Profiler. It only shows up on Disk Utility in certain occasions (such as after shutting down and starting up again). I have checked my Finder preferences, that external hard drives are shown on desktop.
I have tried resetting my PRAM and SMC too, but I still can't access the hard disk.
    Any help will be appreciated.

On the chance that your Mac has a phantom folder in its Volumes folder, with that external drive not mounted, invoke the Finder menu option Go > Go to Folder. Enter "/Volumes" (without the quotes) in the field and click "Go". In the resulting window if you see anything with a name that resembles your external drive, trash it.
Anyone know how I can have the external hard disk automatically mount onto my desktop (and thereby bypass the need for several click-thru’s via the finder window)?
Once you're able to mount that external drive, open the Accounts panel of System Preferences and click on the lock in the corner to authenticate if needed. Select your account on the left, then the "Login Items" tab. Drag the mounted disk icon into the window then close System Preferences. That disk should now mount when you log in. A Finder window will open, but you can close that manually. If that bothers you sufficiently, if you search these discussion groups you may be able to find threads that discuss how to work around that.

If you want to add a second partition to the internal drive (in Disk Utility, select the drive, then open the partition tab and just click the + button), you should first be sure that you will have enough room to accommodate whatever the second volume will be. I am currently doing this for Snow and Mountain Lion.
To get to whatever volume is not the startup disk, restart and hold down option/alt at the chime, which will bring up a selection of the two volumes. Use the left or right arrow keys to select it and then hit enter/return.

  • External hard disk does not show in finder

WD usb external hard disk does not appear in finder.  Disk utility sees it and will mount/unmount and eject.  I ran repair disk util. and all is well but still does not appear in finder

Hey Hatter,  Thanx for the input.
Among other things I tried was a terminal routine someone suggested with no luck and new drivers/firmware for the drive, again, no luck.
I still don't know for sure what caused my problem, but I re-partitioned the drive and re-formatted it and that seemed to solve the provlem.  Sadly, I lost all my info that was backed up on that particular drive but hopefully it won't come back to bite me later.
    Cheers!!

    Greetings,
I've never seen this issue, and I handle many iPads, of all versions. WiFi issues are generally local to the WiFi router - they are not all of the same quality, range, immunity to interference, etc. You have distance, building construction, and the biggie - interference.
At home, I use Apple routers, and have no issues with any of my WiFi enabled devices, computers, mobile devices, etc - even the lowly PeeCees. I have locations where I have Juniper Networks, as well as Aruba, and a few Netgears - all of them work as they should.
The cheaper routers, Linksys, D-Link, Seimens home units, and many other no name devices have caused issues of various kinds, and even connectivity.
I have no idea what Starbucks uses, but I always have a good connection, and I go there nearly every morning and get some work done, as well as play.
You could try changing channels, 2.4 to 5 Gigs, changing locations of the router. I have had to do all of these at one time or another over the many years that I have been a Network Engineer.
    Good Luck - Cheers,
    M.

  • Help!My Mac doesn't find my external hard disk

Today when I tried to open my mac it "stuck" on the first white screen (by the way my external hard disk was already connected). So, not know what to do, I disconnected the hard disk without ejecting it first, since my computer hadn't opened yet and then I switched it off using the switch off button. However, when I switched on my computer again it couldn't find the biggest part of the disk. I have to say that the external disk is split in 2 parts, Lacie and Exchange, in order to use it in both mac and windows respectively. Is there anything I can do to "make it come back"? Please, tell me that it's not lost...I've restarted it but yet nothing...

If you've followed Randy's suggestions above, and you say nothing shows up on the camera's LCD when you're connected (like DV IN), then I might suspect a bad firewire cable.
Remember, the Easy Setup should be chosen first; then you should be capturing into the project with that Easy Setup. If you've chosen the DV NTSC setup, what happens when you open the log and capture window? Does it say "VTR OK" under the view window, or does it say "NO COMMUNICATION?"
If the latter, again, you may have a bad cable. If you're getting the VTR OK, then try controlling the camera with the transport controls in the log and capture window. It should work.

Since updating my Mac to 10.8.4 any external hard disk doesn't show on Finder sidebar (but shows on desktop). Anyone else have the same problem?
It's annoying because now I can't use Finder sidebar for drag and drop to thumb drive etc.
Thanks for your thoughts and help!

    Hi Barney-15E,
Thanks for your reply and suggestions!
It is set to show on the sidebar in Finder prefs and I tried toggling the setting multiple times but it didn't fix anything.
I went into Preferences (I'm Administrator) but the strange thing is I don't see com.apple.sidebarlists.plist anywhere in the folder. Not sure what that means..

  • Can I move an external hard disk off the finder window, to the Dock or menu bar, for instance?

I use a couple of external hard disks, one with Time Machine for every day back-ups and another for occasional back-ups of large work files and videos I have purchased. It bothers me to see them sitting up there in the top right hand corner of my screen. Can I move them permanently somewhere else, into the Dock or Menu Bar say, and still have them permanently available?

    Yes.
You can drag the drive icon from the desktop into the Dock.
Then you can go to Finder > Preferences > General > Show these items on the desktop > uncheck External disks, and it should stay in the dock but not show on the desktop.
There are third party apps that will give you Finder-like access to things in your Menu Bar, like  Download XMenu for Mac - Menubar item lists/launches apps, and more. MacUpdate.com  , but I would avoid third party GUI-changing apps like this if I were you, as they tend to be problematic, and install background processes which slow down your mac.

A brief experiment suggests that Spotlight does not index an NTFS volume driven by Paragon NTFS. I don't have a copy of Tuxera to test.
Sorry, cchaikittiporn. Paragon does not seem to be a solution for your issue.

Probably because it's not an Apple issue. I have Lacie EHD's connected to my MBAir and iMac, all work perfectly on Mavericks. In addition I don't have any keyboard issues on any of my Apple products. BTW IOS is only for IOS devices such as iPads, iPods and iPhones, Macs use OS X. The two OS's are seperate  products designed to run on seperate products.
