Duplicate folders in iTunes after migrating my library

Hello,
I got a new computer, still Windows XP Pro, and install iTunes 9.0.2.25 in it, and import my library, problem is I'm having duplicated folders (Music Videos, My Top Rated, Recently Added, and so on ...)in iTunes. All my music is there and iTunes is working fine, I just want to find a way to delete the duplicated folder entries, any ideas???

I'm having the same issue. You search and search under support and nothing tells you how to delete the duplicate folders. I've got 3 different Itunes library, music, the list goes on and I need to know where these should really reside in my computer, under my programs\Itunes or what because if I delete one from any of the files to test it the song won't play under itunes. Why is this so complicated? Itunes support provides no instruction on where the files should be and how to get rid of the duplicates without killing the song under Itunes. This is making me nuts and it's eating up an extra 8Gb on my computer.

  • Can't open iTunes after migrating new computer

Can't open iTunes after migrating my old powerbook to my new macbook pro. Get the error message: "The file iTunes Library cannot be read because it was created by a newer version of iTunes." Help!

Did you install the latest version of iTunes on the new PC? The usual reason for this is that you had a newer version on the old PC.
If you can't get it to work the simplest thing to do is to drag iTunes Library.itl and iTunes Music Library.xml from the iTunes folder to desktop.
Then start iTunes and use the following link to recreate your library.

Note you already dragged the library files out of the iTunes folder.

  • Duplicate songs in Itunes after Icloud setup.

Once I subscribed to Itunes Match and it did a sync in Icloud, I found many duplicates in Itunes after that. They are identical. It even loaded two song files on the drive. If I try to delete one, it asks if I want to delete the song from Icloud too. If I say no, it just grays out the song but leaves it in Itunes. If I say yes then it will perminatlly delete them from Icloud too. Maybe just another way Apple gets you to keep puchasing the same songs over and over.
Anybody know of a way to get rid of duplicates and retian what I purchased in Icloud?

There is my DeDuper script for automatically removing duplicate copies but keeping one remaining copy of each set. This can preserve ratings, play counts, playlist membership, etc. which are lost in a manual clean up. Please take note of the warning tobackup your library before deduping. See this thread for background on deduping and the script.
Depending on how you created the duplictates it may be possible to sort the exact duplicates display on date added and remove the duplicates added today, but there is a danger that you could have logical duplicates, in which case deleting the files could also remove your originals, or physical duplicates, in which case not deleting the files leaves the hard drive cluttered with copies. Read a bit of the thread before you decide.

  • "There was a problem connecting to the server" in iTunes after migrating to new mac

I have a problem that is driving me crazy with my brand new iMac. I see many other people posting similar issues, but none of the other solutions seem to work for me.
I had a MacPro and bought a new iMac, on which I used Migration Assistant to set up. So the new iMac is virtually the same as my old machine in terms of appearance and installed applications. Both machines have Mountain Lion 10.8.2. All software on both machines has been through Software Update and is fully up to date, as are the connected devices (iPhone and iPad).
The problem is with iTunes. Every time I start iTunes (I think at the moment it checks my two connected devices) I get a pop up dialogue saying:
There was a problem connecting to the server "MacPro".
The server may not exist or it is unavailable at this time. Check the server name or IP address, check your network connection, and then try again.
This dialogue continues to pop up constantly as long as iTunes is open, interrupting my work and frustrating me no end. The old machine is of course turned off and indeed is not available -- but I can't find what on the new iMac is so desperate to connect to it.
So far I have tried completing erasing my iTunes library, deleting all the preferences, reinstalling iTunes from a fresh download of the dmg, safe rebooting several times with no peripherals connected at all, and deleteing other preferences like the Login Items, iPhone config and iPhoto. I have also cleared Recent Items from the apple menu and opened "Connect to Server" in the finder and cleared all servers from the dropdown menu.
Last night I also completely restored my iPhone from scratch to see if that would clear away the issue and I have connected both iPhone and iPad to go through any apps that have permission to write content to my computer and deleted all of them completely from the devices.
Nothing has changed at all after all that, and I have run out of ideas. Clearly there is something somewhere that has my old machine's name hard coded in it but I can't see any way to search for it. I would grep my Library folder but I think a lot of the files are binary so I'm not sure that would unearth anything. I've seen many posts saying that Apple phone support (which I would qualify for) can't help with this issue and so I have put off phoning them to simply run through all the things I've already tried.
Any advice that anyone could offer would be extremely helpful. I can't use iTunes at all like this as it disrupts everything I try to do on the new machine.
    many thanks!!

Nothing at all? Can't anyone help with this issue at all? I would be grateful for any suggstions as it is driving me crazy. It happens every time I open iTunes and also every time I open Mail.

  • I recently removed duplicate songs in iTunes. Now my library has a bunch of songs with exclamation marks by them.  How do I get all my iTunes working again, but remove all the duplicate files?

I had manually deleted a number of duplicate iTunes that I originally have as mp3s.  I want to only have one iTune of each song, but they do need to be working copies.  However now, I have a bunch of iTunes that will not play now and they have an exclamation mark beside them.  How do I get these working again and still only have one copy of them?

I suspect you might have been suffering from logical duplicates. See this  thread for a discussion of the topic. Restore any files that are in your recycle bin, import any disconnected media either by adding the media folder to your library or using a tool such as iTunes Folder Watch. Once the files are back in your libray you can use the methods I outline in that thread or my DeDuper script to tidy up.

  • All songs duplictated in itunes after creating new library

I moved music files from several locations to one location (itunesmedia\music) cleaned out the junk.  Then created a new itunes library.  All songs are duplicated.  What to do to correct?
    Itunes 12.0.1

Thanks for this thread I'm suffering the same exact issues.  Jim are you suggesting that if I resist the "update itunes match" button my deletions of songs in the Cloud will take care of themselves in due time?  And that a rush to "update" too soon after deleting 200+ songs in the cloud is the reason they reappear the next morning?
I'm happy to know this if it is true and adjust my behavior accordingly.
I wish Apple would be more clear about their counter-intuitive functionality - "update" to me doesn't mean "restore" or "revert."

  • Duplicate instances of Itunes after install on my Dell Inspiron N7010

I attempted to download and install the latest ITunes 64 bit on my Dell Inspiron N7010 with Windows 7. The download is fine, but once installed, ITunes appears to write over my existing applications on my desktop, replaces the applications with the ITunes icon and if you click on each my ITunes library will display. Example, I had Adobe Acrobat on my desktop, once Itunes was downloaded and installed, the adobe icon is replaced with the Itunes icon and if you click on it, my Itunes library displays. I have a desktop folder with documents and images that was not written over. I have a shortcut to Roxio that was not written over. Microsoft Office was not written over. I downloaded and installed ITunes (not 64 bit) on another Dell Inspiron 1520 laptop (an older laptop with Windows Vista) with success. I checked settings on both and they appear to be identical. I also have a menu across the top of my desktop that is docked with a explorer icon and other accessories that was not affected by the install. Can someone help me with this? I have installed and uninstalled Itunes about 10 times, checking settings and each time I get the same problem. Thanks.

  • Public Folders credentials prompt after migration to 2013

As part of our migration from 2010 to 2013, we have just moved our public folders across to 2013. In doing this, some, but not all, Outlook Clients are asking for credentials to access the public folders everytime Outlook opens. Looking at the connection
status in outlook while the prompt is open, it is already saying the connection is established. The client still says connected even when cancelling the prompt. This is driving users mad. Our exchange is external to the LAN domain, and have checked the OutlookAnywhere External
Authentication method are set to NTLM. I have created new outlook profiles, cleared windows credential manager on clients, used domain\username as well as UPN, and checked the autodiscover address is correct, all to no avail. The affected clients already
    have http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2817371 applied to them.
I am really not sure where to go next. Any help is much appreciated.

    Hi,
For the credential issue, I recommend the following troubleshooting:
    1. Check if the property Logon network security for the problematic user is set to Anonymous Authentication:
    File>account settings> more settings>security
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2834139/en-us
    2. Confirm if the property LmCompatibilitylevel is set to 2 or 3.
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/820281/en-us
    3. Change another computer to test one problematic user.
If you have any question, please feel free to let me know.

  • Duplicate songs in iTunes after switching to new computer

I recently changed from an old Win XP computer to a new Win 8.1 computer.  While it seems that Microsoft attempted to simplify file management and make a lot of it automatic, I honestly don't understand how it all works.
I'm sure it was probably user error, but somehow now many of my songs - mostly my MP3s - are in iTunes twice.
When I right-click on the duplicate songs, I can see that they're in two locations.  But what I don't know is if they're in two "different" physical locations on the hard drive or if they're in two different "virtual" locations that Win 8.1 sees as two different places, though they may be the same.  I hope that made sense.
To make it more clear (hopefully), these are the 2 locations:
    C:\users\anthony\music\mp3\songname (song name here)
C:\documents and settings\anthony\mydocuments\mymusic\mp3\songname (same song name here)
Are the songs actually on my hard drive twice or does iTunes just see them that way.  And how do I fix it so I have only one instance of each song onmy hard drive and one instance of each song in iTunes?
    Any thoughts are greatly appreciated.

It turns out that the problem was that I had reached my limit of five authorized systems on my iTunes user, and had to de-authorize my old system and authorize the new one. The error message could be a lot more helpful....

  • After adding folders to iTunes library, now have duplicates of each song

I store all my music on a separate drive, M:\
I have a specific file structure setup that has worked for me for years, M:\Artist\Album
I recently received an iPod for my birthday, and started using iTunes. After adding my music drive (M:\) for inclusion into the library (without "keep..." and "copy..." selected, as to keep my current file structure intact), when selecting "File->Display Duplicates" just about every song in the library has a duplicate, one in the original folder "M:\Artist\Album", and another in "M:\Playlists\..\Artist\Album". I understand that basically somehow iTunes glitched and started in the "M:\Playlist" directory when adding to the library at some point, however I am at a loss as to how. In my actual folders I only have 1 copy of each song, so basically iTunes is making a symbolic link to each song and adding it into the library as a separate song.
I have over 9000 (must...resist...meme...) songs in my library, and removing and restoring takes quite a while. I'm pretty sure I'm going to have to do this at least once now, but any ideas as to why or advice on how to avoid this particular problem in the future?
I am pretty set in my ways of my current file structure, since I don't use iTunes as my primary media software, so I would prefer to not have to resort to succumbing to just letting iTunes handle everything the way it wants (I pretty much hate that).
Thank you for any suggestions you may have.
EDIT: Is there a way to have iTunes rename/move files when adding to its library to specific folders via custom rules based on ID3 information (i.e. WMP rip settings)?
    Message was edited by: kaziekama

If you have "Keep..." and "Copy..." unchecked, iTunes will simply reference the existing file, and will not change your file structure, as you correctly note.
I'm fairly sure that some other program is operating on your files. The "Playlists" folder that you mention has nothing to do with iTunes. On my PC, only Windows Media and Roxio use it.
To your question +"Is there a way to have iTunes rename/move files when adding to its library to specific folders via custom rules based on ID3 information (i.e. WMP rip settings)?"+ the answer is no. When iTunes rips a CD, it names the files as track number and title, with no option to do differently. And as far as placing the ripped files, they go in Artist/Album, with no option to do differently. As full-featured ripping programs go, iTunes is not even in the race.

  • Duplicates after migrating to new imac

I recently bought a new imac. Migrating from my old Power PC G5 to new imac went smoothly apart from itunes.
On my old imac i stored all my music on an external hard drive. I thought that after migrating all I would need to do would be to plug this external hard drive into my new imac and all would be fine. Sadly not - every track had the small exclamation mark on it. Believing this was because it could not find any of the music I went File>Open Library and selected everything in my external drives music folder. Now instead of replacing all those files with exclamation marks next to them I have duplicates of everything - and annoyingly the music files I want to keep, the ones with the ratings and play counts, are the ones with the exclamation marks (ie the ones that cannot be found).
Is there a solution to this or do I have to manually go through my entire library deleting the duplicate and then finding each individual track. I have 95GB of music so that may take a while!
    Any help would be wonderful.

  • Deleting hundreds of duplicate files in Itune Library

how do I delete HUNDREDS of duplicate files that show up in my ITunes library? I guess I (or my teenagers) keep importing or adding the same files and folders back in somehow, and now I have 5 or 6 files of each song, hundreds in all. I can't delete these individually..... and the 'consolidate' thing seems to want to erase my mp3 library, I don't want that because I have an old Samsung/Napster that uses those. I just need to delete duplicate files in my Itunes library with one click. Any way to do that?

I had the same problem. I found many duplicates on my pc after moving files to an external hard drive. Some duplicates existed before this move but I did not worry about them. So, after a while my children were running out of space on their ipods so I used the "Show Duplicates" feature and deleted "the .....ing duplicates". Now my children tell me a great deal of their purchased music is missing and they are very annoyed. I told them that I thought Apple/iTunes spoke English and that Duplicate means just that, A Duplicate. This is extremely annoying. It seems like such a common sense fubar thing which is contrary to the awesome quality of the itunes/ipod in general. How do I get the songs we already *payed for* back on our computer? Or, are we screwed and in a spot where we must repurchase this music? Honestly, this is something I expect from microsoft, not Apple.

  • ITunes library gone from iTunes after re-launching Finder

Yesterday while attempting to force quit an application I by mistake re-launched the finder which consequently meant all my settings on the system were lost(I know,I can't believe how dumb I've been as well) and I was in effect starting again from scratch. When launching iTunes it was completely blank,no library, smart playlists or created playlists. The music however was still intact on my hard drive.I have about 16GB of music on my system and about 49GB free.I decided to drag the iTunes music folder to "Library" in the source list and it copied all roughly 4600 tracks. However after doing this there was only 33GB free space so I deleted the library in iTunes leaving it empty again.I haven't synched my iPod since this happened so everything on it is as before my act of stupidity.I read the post earlier where someone's music went from their hard drive and were recommended to download Senuti to transfer it back from their iPod which I have done, although haven't used yet.Sorry for rambling slightly but I've tried to be as concise as possible.I would massively appreciate any help! Thanks

Here's what I'd do. Note that this will delete any playlists you have and may clear track ratings, etc.
    - confirm that at least one of the iTunes folders has all your tracks;
    - drag the other iTunes folder to the Trash (but don't empty the trash yet; if you're worried about accidentally emptying the Trash, drag that iTunes folder to someplace out of the way, but where you won't get confused about which you're working with);
    - in the folder you're keeping, drag the iTunes Library and iTunes.xml files to the Trash (again, don't empty the Trash yet)
    - launch iTunes; it should be blank now.
    - Open the iTunes preferences, go to the Advanced preference and make sure that the iTunes Music Folder location is the iTunes Music folder in the iTunes folder you're keeping
    - uncheck the "copy files to iTunes Music folder when adding to Library" item
    - run the Add To Library command (under the File menu) and select your iTunes Music folder.
That should get all your tracks back into iTunes without duplications (unless duplicates exist in the individual album folders). If it works, then reset the "copy files to iTunes Music folder when adding to Library" item for future imports.
Once you've confirmed that all your tracks are back and play correctly, then you can empty the Trash (or delete the extra iTunes folder).
    Hope this helps.
