Duplicate Font Problem

I made a mistake. I received Photoshop art from one of my artists which required a Helvetica font that wasn't installed. He had included the font set so I opened it and it caused conflicts and my computer crashed.
Using Font Book, I see I have 2 HelveticaNeue listings in my "All" list both located in /Users/me/Fonts. None of the names match but I still have conflict triangles. The first group seems like it would be the one installed by the system software
HelveticaNeue (located in /System/Library/Fonts/HelveticaNeue.dfont)
Light
Medium
Regular
UltaLight
Italic
Light Italic
UltraLight Italic
Bold
Bold Italic
Helvetica 37 Thin Condensed
Helvetica 47 Light Condensed
Helvetica 67 Medium Condensed
Helvetica 37 Thin Condensed Oblique
Helvetica 47 Light Condensed Oblique
Helvetica 67 Medium Condensed Oblique
Condensed Black
Condensed Bold
The next HelveticaNeue "folder" has the following fonts, I experimented turning off different ones of these to make the yellow conflict triangles disappear in the folder above:
HelveticaNeue (located: /Users/Me/Library/Fonts/Helvetica Neue SF)
12 pt. Helvetica* 55 Roman 05472
12 pt. Helvetica* 45 Light 02472 (OFF)
12 pt. Helvetica* 65 Medium 06472 (OFF)
18 pt. Helvetica* 25 Ultra Light 79472 (OFF)
12 pt. Helvetica* 46 Light Italic 11472 (OFF)
12 pt. Helvetica* 56 Italic 13472 (OFF)
12 pt. Helvetica* 66 Medium Italic 33472
18 pt. Helvetica* 26 Ultra Light Italic 99472
12 pt. Helvetica* 75 Bold 07472 (OFF)
12 pt. Helvetica* 85 Heavy 08472
12 pt. Helvetica* 95 Black 09472
12 pt. Helvetica* 76 Bold Italic (OFF)
12 pt. Helvetica* 86 Heavy Italic 15472
12 pt. Helvetica* 96 Black Italic 16472
18 pt. Helvetica* 35 Thin 55472
18 pt. Helvetica* 36 Thin Italic 56472
I assume this last batch are the ones I stupidly turned on which caused the conflicts.
9 are still active. Is this OK?
Of the 7 that cause the conflicts, Can I delete them from the font container they are in, or just leave the "Off" ?

Hi
+"9 are still active. Is this OK?"+
If the conflicts are gone and your system is stable and performing as it was before the introduction of these fonts. Yes.
+"Of the 7 that cause the conflicts can I delete them from the font container they are in, or just leave the Off?"+
It's up to you. If it was me I would delete them as there may be a chance of you inadvertently re-activating them. You don't need them anyway and you already know they cause a problem so there's not much point in having them in your system. Is there?
Hope this helps?

  • Duplicate font in PDF causes prepress RIP failure

I've scanned various forums trying to get a handle on this problem but nothing seems to get at this issue.
A book that we've built with InDesign generates pdfs that show a duplicate MyriadPro-Light font embedded in the document. The second iteration of the font has a different icon and is listed with as Type 1(CID) with Encoding: Identity-H. The Acrobat Pro PDF/X-1a preflight doesn't flag any issues with the file, but when I sent the file to prepress their RIP flagged the MyriadPro-Light font as having inadequate permissions. They were unable to substitute a font or bypass the error. What's more, they were unable to print from the packaged source files I provided - getting the same error. They had to brute-force open individual pdf pages in Illustrator, convert to outlines, generate an eps and place 170 eps pages in Quark to get a file that would RIP.
Here's an image link that shows the two MyriadPro-Light font entries with the balky one highlighted.
    http://home.comcast.net/~bjnicholls/fileaccess/EmbeddedFontsAcrobatPro.jpg
I've looked for duplicate MyriadPro installations in my XP SP2 system fonts folder and in the common files/adobe/fonts folder. There were duplicates for several MyriadPro fonts, but only the Light variant is acting up. From what I've gleaned, the Indentity-H suggests the font is a screen font or something along those lines.
I moved all the OTF fonts from the common files Adobe fonts folder trying to troubleshoot the problem. I bypassed my FontAgent Pro utility and ensured the MyriadPro OTF fonts were installed in the system fonts folder with no fonts with similar names.
I theorized that pdf and eps graphics placed in the book documents may have a font variant embedded in them, so I went through all the placed vector format files and converted type to outlines. A subsequent pdf export shows the same duplicate font problem.
I'd appreciate help with a strategy to track down the offending font. There are 11 documents assembled into one InDesign book, I'm generating a book pdf from the book dialog window. I've opened each document looking for font error messages and found none. In each document, Myriad Pro Light shows normally in the font pulldown lists and behaves normally.
Some of the document files were worked on via a Mac. As far as I know the same Adobe Opentype fonts were used by that designer. The documents started out in InDesign CS2, but as my collaborator acquired CS3 we've moved the document into the new version.
In addition to diagnostic strategy advice, I'd appreciate information or links to explain Adobe's application font strategy (dedicated font folders in both the common program files folder and so-called "private" font folders associated in the application folder tree). I've seen many threads where this fragmentation of installed fonts causes confusion and I'd like to understand what Adobe's intent is with this separate font management system.
I suppose I should ask this in the Acrobat forum, but I don't understand why this font issue isn't flagged in Acrobat preflight checking.
Thanks for any light you can shed on these questions.

Therer is absolutely nothing wrong with the scenario of a PDF file having one font subset as regular Type 1 and another as a double byte CID encoded. That is all perfectly kosher per the PDF specification. As such, no PDF/X preflight or any other rational preflight profile will flag this as an error since it is not an error!
I suspect that the "problem" is not that there are two subsets of a particular font, one as a regular Type 1 font and the other as a CID-encoded font, but rather, that there is a problem with the RIP itself not being able to properly deal with CID-encoded fonts. The fact is that CID-encoding has been part of the PostScript language specification for well over 10 years (standard in PostScript 3 and most PostScript Level 2 printers can handle these fonts - even my 12 year old LaserJet 5M can handle them!) and the general PDF specification since Acrobat 4 / PDF 1.3 in 1999 (although Acrobat 3 did support them for CJK Asian fonts).
Note that the scenario you offer occurs not only with InDesign, but with Illustrator, Photoshop, and Acrobat Distiller. All of them can yield PDF files that would be a problem for your printer's RIP.
Looks like your printer needs to update their software to some reasonable level.

  • Does anybody know how to solve this font problem?

    Hello everyone,
I have had this font problem for weeks now and I can't seem to get it solved. There are a number of fonts that won't load properly in Illustrator, PS, and InDesign. They are loaded in the system, but refuse to show up in the list. I've installed them in the home directory/library/fonts. These are commercial opentype fonts and one homemade opentype font. Sometimes the font that I created will appear, other times it does not, but many other fonts refuse to show up in the font display lists of these 3 software packages.
I've cleared the font caches with FontNuke, everything looks like it should work properly, but it does not. Also, with Font Book, I've resolved any duplicate font problems. Does anybody know how to solve this problem? Is this a known CS4 bug?
Any help would be greatly appreciated. I'm using the latest Mac Mini and CS4 software.
    Thanks in advance.

    Hi,
How do I check if the fonts have the correct creator and so on?
Anyway, I've spent the better part of today validating and removing suspect
fonts. Why does the right click choice for resolve duplicates and the
validate font behave completely differently in Font Book? I discovered that
when this is investigated further with the validate font command, I found I
had a massive amount of duplicates that according to font book cause minor
errors. I thought that would have been sorted out with the resolve duplicate
command, instead I ended up check marking and manually removing the fonts
    that had minor errors.
I still have many commercial fonts plus my own font not showing up in
Illustrator or PhotoShop. If I copy and paste the font directly into
InDesign's font folder, my font shows up. I also tried removing my font to
see if this would fix any of the other problems. It doesn't. I did type in
my font name in the console dialog box and this message is displayed for
this font as well as mine and many others.
10-04-06 5:21:09 PM Font Book[12940] ##### ERROR:  The font system thinks
    the font
    file://localhost/Library/Fonts/Voluta%20Script%20Pro/VolutaScriptPro-Regular.otf
is active, but the file no longer exists!
Then I went back to font book to check to see if it is there and it is
enabled. For my font the caution triangle appears with the multiple copies
of the font is installed. Resolving duplicates doesn't solve this problem.
Any ideas of how to fix this problem?
    Thanks

  • Problems with duplicate fonts

The other day I was looking into "Font Book.app" and notice I had a few duplicates so I removed them. Now I have a few applications that don't work, like Zino (Magazine reader) it unexpectedly quits. So I contact Zino and they ask me to send them the first part of the report that generates an application when it unexpectedly quits. And they notice I had no Arial font activated. The problem is that I do have the Arial font in my "Font Book" application but I guess is the duplicate Arial font that the application is looking for. My question is how can I get this duplicate fonts back?
Blue skies and happy new year!
    Jerry

how did you deactivate those fonts? did you use Font Book or did you manually delete the fonts? if the former, then reboot once in safe mode. reboot and hold shift at the chime. once you boot in safe mode reboot again and log in normally. this will clear your fonts cache and all you inactive fonts will be reactivated.

  • Font problems after 10.6.2 upgrade

    Hello!
Just after upgrading to 10.6.2, al the iwork documents (Pages and Keynote) that use Time New Roman (originally Office documents) are unreadable due to a kerning problem that affects only this font (that I know of).
Did somebody had the same problem and have the fix? I already removed the duplicate fonts. Thanks.
    Message was edited by: ddoneda

I migrated several Word files over to Pages recently. The only warning I got was with Times New Roman in one file which was odd as all the files use the Times New Roman (TrueType font). Once the files were open I changed all the text to Pages Helvetica without any problems (I use Word (Office 2007) under Windows and Word (2004) for Mac OS for documents with bibliographies). My initial problem with Pages was due to Hoefler font which was resolved when I trashed it.

  • Can I change option for Consolidating Duplicate Fonts?

I work for a textbook publisher. Our materials are constantly be proofed, updated, and repurposed. Several of the titles are over 1,000 pages. We are experiencing very significant hangups when it comes to "Consolidating Duplicate Fonts" when we replace the initial page of these documents, and then again when we need to do a "Save As." Sometimes this process can take upwards of 45 minutes. This has created a production nightmare without any resolution I can find to the problem. Is there anything we can do to speed up or bypass this process without bloating the file sizes or degrading press-ready compatibility?

Thank you for your input, Luke. And, yes, I am talking about PDFs.
In normal situations, your suggestion may be a viable option. However, our printer and the vendor we use to generate/post our digital editions require completely embedded font sets (no subsets). But, I will give it a try, just to test the theory.
Our Student Edition textbooks actually run through this process at a resonable time; taking about 2–3 minutes.
Primarily, the issue happens when updating pages within our Teacher's Edition. The teacher's book pages contain an insert of the student's textbook pages. Those imported graphics for the insets are also PDFs, made from a cropped press-optimized version of the student's pages. It's my thought that is what is causing the trouble. Otherwise, this text in the teacher's book is quite simple. I'm fairly sure the app has to basically read/consolidate each of those particular pages twice. But it still shouldn't take as long as it does.
Typically, we use only four font families: Avant Garde, New Century Schoolbook, Lubalin Graph, and Jacoby. We do use a few others randomly for illustrative purposes at times, but all-in-all, we keep fairly simple in regards to font usage. I really don't believe the issue has anything to do with the quantity of fonts being used.

  • FAQ: How do I clear out my font cache to fix font style and duplicate font style issues?

We have a Script availabe for CS6 beta users who are experiencing particular font related issues.
This script will help by clearing the font cache and will test for corrupted fonts.
This will solve some of the type issues with duplicate font names and some of the other font errors.
This script is to help to find corrupted fonts. The script itself doesn’t solve the problem.
This script doesn’t solve duplicate font name, but clears out your font cach .  It it will solve some duplicate font style name issues such as the one  in the link below.
    http://forums.adobe.com/message/4306828#4306828
There is a pdf file explaining how to use the script and what it will do.
    See attached files.

Monica, I know the Normal Character Style in Illustrator must be defined. But my question is about the Normal Paragraph Style, not the Normal Character Style. As Larry just said, in most of my documents, and in my New Document Profiles, these fields in the Normal Paragraph Style are blank (undefined), so I know this is possible. In a few older documents I'm converting, the Normal Paragraph Style has a defunct font, and even though my Normal Character Style is correctly defined with the current font, it's creating some weird behavior.
Larry, it doesn't appear to be the document itself, it just appears to be not knowing what the right keystroke combo is to clear it. Just make a new file from a Document Profile where the Normal Paragraph Style does not define one of those font fields, define a font and/or font size, save, then reopen the paragraph style settings and try to clear any field that has been set. I can't clear it, I can only change the font.

  • Duplicate Fonts

Recently, i validate my fonts using "font book" and there seems to be an error with the font "Helvetica." By validating "font book" i found out that there were 2 files of the font "Helvetica Light" (Yellow Triangle). I tried to select the font "Helvetica Light" and i tried resolving the duplicate, but it doesnt seem to work. I click "resolved duplicate" many times but nothing seems to fix it.

Try here >  Font problems and management in OS X | MacFixIt - CNET Reviews
If that doesn't help, go to ~/Library/Preferences.

  • FCPX crashing when text inspector open, I suspect a font problem. Help!

I have encountered a problem where FCPX will crash whenever text propertys should show in the inspector tab (Text can be edited when the inspector is closed).
After searching google, this appears to be a common problem. Everyone seems to say the symptoms indicate a font problem, which I suspected. However after using font book to verify my fonts, getting rid of 3rd party installed fonts and then messing up my fonts library
terribly (still trying to figure out what exactly I did). I seem to have no luck.
Has a solution be discovered yet? I need to be able to change my font settings not just edit text! Please help!

Isn't that just the way things work. After working on this problem for many hours and several days I post here and within a few more hours it works itself out. <embarrassed>
I used font book to turn off all fonts but the ones the OS needs to run, and it turns out somehow I ended up with duplicates of those ones. After a struggle to get rid of the duplicates I also deleted FXPs preference files. Now I can edit the text in the properties/info pane again!

  • File is getting hung up in Consolidating Duplicate Fonts function

I have a large file that has around 50 files incorporated into it for a total of approximately 9000 pages.  One "section" of the file is where the majority of files were incorporated.  No one in my organization was the author of those files.  The problem I have with the completed file, after a lot of pain, is that any time I go into the file to make modifications (i.e., replace pages or add pages) the action causes the file to do a function called Consolidating Duplicate Fonts which is a normal function.  What is not normal is that this function gets hung up and takes almost an hour to process.  The problem manifests again when I go to save the file (I always use Save As) when saving my files for optimum file size management.
When I work with this document without that section in it the file is fine.
I have tried printing to the problem files to Adobe PDF as another file and while that reduces the file size it doesn't cure the problem.  I have the suspicion that there is something in the embedding of fonts that is going on.  Is there any way to fix the problem of the file taking so long to consolidate the duplicate fonts?

I can only imagine that these files are huge. A portfolio may be more appropriate.

  • Font Problem - Blocky, black outlined type

This just started happening after an archive and reinstall of Leopard on my system. I have tried every tip I could find online, I have removed all duplicate fonts, and my entire Font Book validates with no errors. I am at a loss!
Here's some screen shots showing the problem:
    http://i220.photobucket.com/albums/dd13/AdamGW/Picture1.png
    http://i220.photobucket.com/albums/dd13/AdamGW/Picture2.png
    What causes this?

Then the fonts themselves are likely damaged. Font Book's validating function isn't known to be very accurate. You can replace all of the fonts OS X came with without having to reinstall the entire OS. Follow the instructions near the bottom of my article, Font Management in OS X, to see how to do that. Any other fonts you've added to your system will have to be replaced from their original source.
Once you have replaced your fonts, clear the font cache files again.
The link, or one of the links above directs you to my personal web site. While the information is free, it does ask for a contribution. As such, I am required by Apple's rules for these discussions to include the following disclaimer.

  • Updated to 10.6.4 and now a Photoshop font problem.

I just updated to 10.6.4 and opened a file I was using with Photoshop CS4. Now I get the message "some text layers may need to be updated before they can be used for vector based output" which tells me that a font I was using has problems (turned off? corrupted?).
If I allow it to update, will it change the font?
I cannot click on the text to see what font I was using because it requires that I update it.
    What do I do now?

So I think my problem is sort of a non-problem. Updating to 10.6.4 caused my font setting to change, most likely turning on some that were duplicates. This caused Photoshop to change what font it used for the layout and gave me the 'warning'. Allowing the fonts to update did not change the look of the Photoshop document.
The one part I do not understand is that since MSOffice seems to load fonts in a folder that houses the applications, rather than in the user font folder, is there anyway to rectify this and load the MS fonts in the user font folder? Using the Font Book to resolve duplicates causes problems with the MSOffice programs. If I can move those fonts to the user library font folder, will that resolve the problem?
It is also interesting that even though the MSOffice fonts are loaded in a folder with the MS applications, those fonts are available to other applications such as Photoshop that are not part of the MSOffice group.
Note that I am having this problem only because I have two copies of MSOffice, X and 2004. If I trashed one version of them, my problem would go away. I keep the two different versions because of compatibility issues and because I have problems with Entourage 2004.

  • Lion Safari font problems

After Lion install Safari shows text as AAAAAAA. Have removed all the TrueType fonts doubling with OpenType, but problem still exist. Also removed Safari prefs, to no avail. Is there a solution or is Apple aware of this problem and do we have to wait for an update??

New Web Open Fonts standard has been adopted by Apple for Safari 5.1 running under Lion.
Garbage (Last Resort Font) is displayed in Safari 5.1 in place of improper fonts.
Problem may be caused by Duplicate Fonts or bad kind of Fonts.
Type 1 Postscript Fonts are no longer accepted by Safari.
Use only Open Type or TrueType Fonts.
Duplicate Fonts must be eliminated with FontBook.
    NB:
    Results are not guaranteed!
Restart of the System doesn't solve the problem permanently.
