Duplicate i tunes libraries

My problem is similar to an earlier poser but seems different enough to re-phrase the question. My itunes library is duplicated in the C & external hard drives. My itunes music folder exists purely in the external hard drive. Each time i add a folder to the itunes library in the exHD it adds it to the library in the c drive. The music folder location in preferences is set to the exHD. Any ideas anyone? The music folder is over 40GB & i don't want to run the risk of losing all my goodies by running 'consolidate library' (i've already lost smaller versions of the library in trying to prevent the duplication)

  • How do I move my i-tunes libraries which are on my "C" drive under "My Music" to i-tunes libraries?

Recently, my hard drive had to be reconfigured. i-tunes libraries under i-tunes show on the screen but are not located.  All of the i-tyunes libraries are located on the "C" drive under "My Music" libraries.  How I transfer/copy the music libraries to i-tunes so that I can download to my i-pod.
    Chris

You should be able to use either "Carbon Copy Cloner" or "SuperDuper" (free for this purpose) to copy your case-sensitive volume to an empty case-insensitive one. Make at least two such copies on different drives. One is not enough to be safe.
If there are any name conflicts—that is, files in the same folder with names that differ only in case, such as "File" and "file"—then you will either get an error or one of the files won't be copied. You must ensure either that no such conflicts exist, or that the consequences are not important. How you do that is up to you. Unless you went out of your way to create conflicts, they probably don't exist.
Then erase the source volume in Disk Utility as case-insensitive. This action will remove all data from the volume.
Restore from one of your backups using the same application you used to create it, or use the "Restore" feature of Disk Utility, which will be faster. Search its built-in help for the term "duplicate" if you need instructions.

  • What is the best app for identifying and removing duplicates from iPhoto Libraries/Pictures?

I have five iPhoto Libraries (original, default merged, etc.)  I've tried using iPhoto Library Manager, but I seem to be digging a deeper hole.  Also, question about the 15,000 faces:  Are these taking up space on my hard drive?  I gather I cannot easily remove them from libraries.  Taking photos at concerts, sporting events, etc. just creates more faces in iPhoto;  frankly, I could do without ANY FACE DETECTION!

These applications will identify and help remove duplicate photos from an iPhoto Library:
    iPhoto Library Manager - $29.95
Duplicate Annihilator - $7.95 - only app able to detect duplicate thumbnail files or faces files when an iPhoto 8 or earlier library has been imported into another.
PhotoSweeper - $9.95 - This app can search by comparing the image's bitmaps or histograms thus finding duplicates with different file names and dates.
DeCloner - $19.95 - can find duplicates in iPhoto Libraries or in folders on the HD.
DupliFinder - $7 - shows which events the photos are in.
iPhoto AppleScript to Remove Duplicates - Free
PhotoDedupo - $4.99 (App Store) -  this app has a "similar" search feature which is like PhotoSweeper's bitmap comparison.  It found all duplicates
Duplicate Cleaner for iPhoto - free - was able to recognize the duplicated HDR and normal files from an iPhone shooting in HDR
Some users have reported that PhotoSweeper did the best in finding all of the dups in their library: iphoto has duplicated many photos, how...: Apple Support Communities.
If you have an iPhone and have it set to keep the normal photo when shooting HDR photos the two image files that are created will be duplicates in a manner of speaking (same image) but there are only twp apps that detected the iPhone HDR and normal photos as being duplicates:  PhotoSweeper and Duplicate Cleaner for iPhoto.  None of the other apps detected those two files as being duplicates as they look for file name as well as other attributes and the two files from the iPhone have different file names.
iPLM, however, is the best all around iPhoto utility as it can do so much more than just find duplicates.  IMO it's a must have tool if using iPhoto.

It has always been very basic to always maintain a backup copy of your computer files/docs/pics/music/etc.
Just use your backup to put everything back.  This is one of the many reason that backup are very basic.

"I used to sync my iPod Touch with two different iTunes libraries....did the change something with the iPhone that won't allow this now?"
The ipod touch and the iphone are not the same device. The iphone does not. nor has it ever, allowed syncing music from two computers.

  • How do I combine two I-tunes libraries into one?

I have an I-tunes library and my daughter has her own.  We would like to combine them into one account.  She has her own account and log in a well as her own appple ID.  I also have my own but seems would make things easier to have one so we can share all of the apps and other things.    Instead of buying the same apps for my phone and then for her ipod touch it would make sense to have it all on one account

    Time flies Goldie.
I'm back with MAC's any luck with merging.  I have a hundred's of CD's waiting to be downloaded to a hard drive but I just don't trust the constant updating with I-tunes.  The cloud is probably the solution and home sharing.

  • Importing tracks from non-I Tune libraries into I Tunes

I am a recent convert to the world of Ipod, having previously used other mp3 players like Zen Creative and an old Panasonic that operated off Real Player & Real Jukebox software. I would now like to import my old music collection into I-Tunes, but am having major difficulties:
Firstly, whereas Creative Media Organiser allowed me to import tracks from my Shared folder (C:\Program Files\My Shared Folder)in Mp3 or AAC or WMA, I-Tunes will not let me do this. When I open up the Shared folder in I-Tunes it doesn't provide any music file formats in the file format tab - only has .txt and xml which don't bring up the music files that are in there.
Secondly, I-Tunes won't let me 'drag & drop' tracks from my Creative Media library directly into I-tunes.
Thirdly, it doesn't interact with the Real Jukebox software, so I can't access the files stored in there either.
    Help! Any Suggestions?

    Hi Tracy,
Some of what you have been told is fine, but there is still some confusion going on.
First, when you try to open a file with iTunes, the reason you only see .txt and xml is because the open command is not the one to import music. It's for opening playlists (.txt and xml). To bring in music you want to use the Add to Library command. An easier way is to find the files on your computer, drag them to the iTunes library window, and drop them there. This will import all formats that iTunes can play.
For those files that are in some strange format that iTunes won't play (such as ATRAC or protected WMA) then the other poster is correct, you'll have to burn and Audio CD and re-rip it, but all the other formats will do the drag and drop thing just fine.

  • Connection with different I-tunes libraries

I have run into an issue when I tried to access another I-tunes library on my second computer and I was asked whether I wanted to take the contents of this second libary and put it into the Ipod thus wiping out all the other material that was already there. How do I go about authorizing the Ipod to extract music, video, etc. from a second computer? Thanks!

  • Two i pods, one computer, how do we get separate i Tunes libraries??

Hubby and I share a computer. The internet account is in husbands name/on his log-in. I have had my own ipod for some time and my iTunes library is all set up and running via internet access on his login. My partner now has an iPod too and we want to have separate iTunes and separate ipods using the same computer. We followed set up for the new ipod and it does not offer a new separate itunes but started loading my stuff. Any ideas or help most welcome. Not very computer literate so simple language wil be helpful. Thanks

  • Can I Sharing Music Between I-tunes Libraries

    Hope someone can help.........
I recently copied our itunes music from our desktop to our laptop. Kids can used the desktop and we will use the laptop. I have "authorized" the new laptop to purchase and play itunes music. If our daughter purchases a song on her account using the desktop, can I then also pull that new song from her library onto our ipod?
In other words, if I merely plug our ipod into her desktop, can I pull that song out for me since I paid for it? Can ipods accept music from more than one computer? Hope this makes sense.
    Thank you.

*if I merely plug our ipod into her desktop, can I pull that song out for me since I paid for it?*
Yes you can. You can also copy purchases from one computer to another (you can authorise up to 5 computers to play your purchases). iTunes for Windows: How to copy purchases between authorized computers
*Can ipods accept music from more than one computer?*
If you want to connect and use an iPod on more than one computer or with more than one library you need to change the update preference in the iPod Summary tab to "Manually manage music and videos" and click Apply. The content of iTunes and the iPod are not syncronised in this mode so the two can be different. You can directly access the content of the iPod and play it through iTunes and you can drag and drop whatever you want to the iPod from either library:
    Using iPod with Multiple computers
Managing content manually on iPod and iPhone
    Syncing Music to iPod
Something else to be aware of when using an iPod in manual mode is that the "Do Not Disconnect" message will remain on the display until you physically eject the device: Safely Disconnect IPod

  • I just upgraded from i-tunes 10 to i-tunes version 11.1.3 in order to sync my i-phone.  All my libraries now come up now as one combined library, which makes it frustrating  and difficult to find my songs.  Can I have both the 10 and the new 11.1.3 on ?

I had to upgrade  to i-tunes 11.1.3  from my old i-tunes 10  so that my i-phone could get synced to i-tunes. I used to have several i-tunes libraries on my computer for various subjects.  Like for movies, bird recordings, and  songs I wrote myself. Now when I open i-tunes all the libraries open up at once in one library, it is completely reorganized,  making it almost impossible to find my old songs, playlists, movies, etc.  I just got done organizing my libraries, and now its all confused and Im terribly frustrated. How can I get my old organization back, and is it possible to have several libraries again, or both the old and new i-tunes on the same hard drive? Anyone have any advice how to organize my new i-tunes ?

What a waste of space to paste the code.
Why not ask in the iLife > iPhoto forum where your question belongs.

  • I keep getting exact duplicate songs in playlists and libraries, how can you filter this out when upgrading these lists, or sync to the same device again? And how to do it without going through each and every P'list or Library ?

I have Windows XP-Pro SP3, the latest upgrades of Three media players, iTunes being the default player. I keep getting duplicates in playlists, libraries etc., of the same version of song. Everytime i make a change or renew my media to device or SYNC it wants to add duplicates to the computer disk, lists etc. Can you filter out same copies without having to edit each and every song, which in my case is quite large. For instance if you want to convert all mpeg, or mp4-a files to AAC you will end up with duplicates of each file type. Or you sync to an ipod, the library adds to itself---- including copies of songs already in it, if in a different file version.

    Your refer to:
" if you want to convert all mpeg, or mp4-a files to AAC "
This will always duplicate files within iTunes.  I need to ask why you're doing this conversion - all formats are compatible with iTunes, and conversion between mp3 and AAC will always involve some loss of quality.
